To test Shopify checkout extensions for visual and functional regressions, use a layered loop: verify the extension’s target, API version, and store eligibility; run the Shopify CLI preview; place the extension in the checkout editor; exercise every relevant checkout, buyer, cart, device, and fulfillment scenario; then add unit, browser, and screenshot checks. A screenshot diff can reveal a layout change, but it cannot prove that the extension is active in every merchant placement or checkout context.

Shopify describes scenario testing as a way to recreate merchant and customer experiences and ensure that an extension behaves as intended. Treat the editor and real checkout contexts as the source of truth, with automation supplying repeatable checks around them.

Start with the surface you are actually allowed to test

Checkout UI extensions do not all have the same eligibility rules. Extensions that render on the information, shipping, or payment steps require a Shopify Plus store. Shopify’s getting-started guidance recommends a development store with Shopify Plus enabled for building and testing these surfaces. The March 13, 2026 developer changelog says new Plus development shops receive checkout UI extension access after the developer preview ended.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That requirement applies to the checkout surface under test, not automatically to every extension target. Record the target and store type before interpreting a missing extension as a code defect. A test performed on a store that cannot render the target is an environment failure, not a functional result.

Capture target and version details

For each extension, note the module and target in shopify.extension.toml, the development store, and the configured Shopify API version. Shopify’s current API reference lists unit-test support through @shopify/ui-extensions-tester beginning with API version 2026-04. Confirm that your extension is configured for that version before adding those tests; the capability is version-specific.

Shopify’s versioning policy gives stable API versions a minimum of 12 months of support, and the CLI prevents deployment to versions older than 12 months. During maintenance, check the current version and plan a supported-version upgrade rather than assuming a test that works today will remain available indefinitely.

Record before testing Why it matters
Extension module and target Determines which checkout surface and placement rules apply.
API version Controls available APIs and whether @shopify/ui-extensions-tester is supported.
Development-store plan Plus is required for information, shipping, and payment checkout-step surfaces.
Checkout configuration One-page, three-page, and Shop Pay can expose different rendering and placement behavior.

Use Shopify’s local preview as the first feedback loop

From the app project, run:

shopify app dev

The Shopify CLI creates a preview for the selected development store and reloads the extension as you change code. If the app has a backend, the development command can also expose that backend locally through a Cloudflare tunnel. Keep this loop running while making small changes: it is the fastest way to catch a broken render, an exception, a missing capability, or a styling change before moving to broader scenario checks.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Start shopify app dev and select the intended development store when prompted.
  2. Open the generated preview URL in the supported checkout or editor flow.
  3. Change one relevant component, style, or data path.
  4. Reload the preview and verify that the intended target updates without console errors.
  5. Record the exact store, checkout mode, browser, and extension version when a failure occurs.

A local preview validates that the current code can render in the development environment. It does not replace merchant configuration. Continue to the checkout editor and customer scenarios before treating the change as safe.

Test static and block targets where merchants can place them

Static targets

A static target renders automatically at its configured location. Verify that the extension appears there in each checkout context that supports the target. If it is absent, first check eligibility, the target declaration, and whether the current checkout flow includes that location.

Block targets

A block target can be previewed at different supported positions by adding the placement reference to the checkout URL produced by Shopify CLI:

?placement-reference={name}

Replace {name} with the documented reference for the position you want to inspect. Shopify lists placement references for wallet, information, delivery, and payment areas, as well as separate placements for Thank you and Order Status surfaces. Test every placement your extension supports and any position a merchant is likely to choose, not only the default position used during development.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Placement checks should cover more than visibility. At each position, verify spacing, heading hierarchy, focus order, error placement, loading behavior, and what happens when the surrounding section is absent. A block that looks correct in one location can collide with neighboring content or receive a different available width in another.

Verify merchant configuration in the checkout editor

Shopify’s testing instructions state that an extension does not display in checkout until a merchant adds the app block and places it through the checkout editor. Treat this as a required functional step:

  1. Open the development store’s checkout editor.
  2. Add the app block to the relevant template or section.
  3. Move it among the supported targets and save the configuration.
  4. Open the resulting checkout preview and confirm that the saved placement is reflected.
  5. Repeat for the checkout contexts your app supports.

Inspect one-page checkout, three-page checkout, and Shop Pay separately. Components can receive different space, buyer data, or lifecycle events in each flow. For Shop Pay testing, Shopify requires Shopify Payments to be configured in test mode on the development store. Shop Pay Installments requires completed Shopify Payments setup as well.

Do not infer that a successful editor preview covers every merchant configuration. A merchant may move a block, use a different checkout layout, or run a flow in which the target is not available. Keep the saved editor configuration as one test dimension and the customer journey as another.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Build a scenario matrix before writing automation

Shopify’s checkout UX guidance names the following dimensions. Select the rows that can affect your extension, and keep the rest as smoke coverage so a platform change does not silently break an untested path.

Axis Scenarios What to observe
Device Mobile and desktop Responsive layout, touch targets, wrapping, keyboard focus, and viewport-specific clipping.
Buyer flow Guest checkout and Shop Pay Identity availability, accelerated-checkout behavior, target location, and consent or validation states.
Cart Physical, digital, and discounted products Conditional rendering, price calculations, eligibility messages, and empty or missing delivery data.
Fulfillment Shipping and pickup Delivery choices, address dependencies, pickup-specific content, and state transitions.
Layout One-page and three-page checkout Step transitions, persistence, loading states, and whether the extension appears on the intended step.
Location Every supported block placement plus each configured static target Available width, neighboring content, focus order, and merchant-controlled positioning.

Choose scenarios according to behavior. A delivery customization needs applicable shipping and pickup choices. A block that depends on buyer identity needs both guest and accelerated checkout. An extension that changes when a discount is present needs a discounted cart, not just a regular product. Shopify notes that target locations can change between guest checkout and Shop Pay, so compare the actual rendered location rather than assuming it is identical.

Run a repeatable functional workflow

1. Establish a known cart and payment setup

Create deterministic products for physical and digital goods, a test discount, and the delivery methods needed by the extension. Keep product names, prices, inventory, and discount codes stable so failures are attributable to code changes rather than changing fixtures. Use Shopify Payments test mode for payment and Shop Pay scenarios.

2. Exercise the happy path

Open the relevant checkout, add the extension through the editor if required, and complete the normal interaction. Confirm that controls accept valid input, state changes are reflected in the UI, and the checkout can proceed. Capture browser console errors and network failures alongside the visible result.

3. Exercise invalid and boundary states

Submit empty, malformed, or out-of-range values where the extension accepts input. Remove a product that previously enabled the extension, switch fulfillment method, change a discount, and navigate backward and forward between steps. Verify that errors are understandable, focus moves to the problem, loading indicators stop, and stale values are not retained after the underlying cart or buyer state changes.

4. Repeat through each supported context

Run the same functional assertions on mobile and desktop, guest checkout and Shop Pay, one-page and three-page checkout, and the applicable product and fulfillment combinations. Record a skipped scenario with a reason when the extension does not support it; do not silently omit it.

5. Check merchant edits

Move the block, save, reopen the editor, and confirm that the placement persists. Disable or remove the block, then verify that checkout no longer renders it and that no orphaned spacing or errors remain. Re-enable it to ensure the extension can recover from a merchant configuration change.

Add unit tests at the extension layer

For checkout UI extensions using API version 2026-04, Shopify points to @shopify/ui-extensions-tester for unit testing. Use this layer for deterministic logic that should not require a browser: conditional rendering, input validation, event handling, formatting, and responses to mocked extension data.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep unit tests focused on observable behavior. Assert that the correct component or message is produced for a given state, that an action calls the expected handler, and that invalid input does not advance the flow. Do not treat a passing unit test as evidence that a merchant can place the block, that a target exists in a particular checkout, or that CSS remains visually compatible with surrounding content. Those questions belong to editor, browser, and screenshot checks.

If the extension uses an API version older than 2026-04, verify current support before adopting this package. The CLI’s minimum-version deployment rule means version maintenance is part of the test plan, not a separate administrative task.

Use browser checks for real checkout behavior

Browser-level tests connect the extension to the checkout runtime, editor configuration, and user actions. They are the right layer for checking that the block appears after a merchant adds it, that a user can interact with it, and that navigation or fulfillment changes do not break the flow.

  • Assert that the extension is visible at the intended target after configuration.
  • Interact with controls using user-level actions rather than directly changing application state.
  • Verify loading, success, and error states after the relevant checkout event.
  • Check that the extension remains usable after changing delivery method, discount, or checkout step.
  • Capture console and network failures as test artifacts.

Keep browser tests small and independent. A long end-to-end purchase journey is useful as a smoke test, but a failure in a single assertion should identify the broken target, scenario, and state without requiring a complete suite rerun.

Add screenshot assertions without overclaiming what they prove

Playwright Test supports visual assertions with await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot(). On the first run, Playwright creates reference images; later runs compare the current capture with those references. Use screenshot assertions for stable checkpoints such as the extension’s initial render, validation error, loading state, and a representative mobile and desktop placement.

await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot('checkout-extension-desktop.png');

A screenshot comparison detects pixel or rendering differences. It does not prove that the extension is enabled in every merchant placement, that an inaccessible state is reachable, or that a backend response is correct. Keep functional assertions beside the screenshot so a visually unchanged screen cannot hide a broken interaction.

Make baselines reproducible

Playwright warns that rendering can vary with the host operating system, browser version, browser settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode. Generate and compare baselines in the same controlled environment. Pin the browser version, use a fixed viewport, keep device scale and color settings consistent, and avoid capturing while fonts, images, or checkout data are still loading.

When materially different browser or operating-system combinations are required, use separate Playwright projects or separate baseline sets. Do not overwrite one platform’s references with another platform’s output. Review every diff: a green test means the captured image matched its baseline under that environment, not that the extension is visually correct everywhere.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Review intentional changes explicitly

When a UI change is deliberate, inspect the diff against the editor and checkout behavior, then update the baseline in the same reviewed change. Keep the old image available through version control so an accidental baseline update can be reverted. Treat unexplained changes as failures until the cause is identified; do not approve them merely because the new screenshot looks plausible in isolation.

Consider hosted visual comparison when the team needs it

Percy can route existing Playwright toHaveScreenshot() calls through a hosted comparison workflow. Its documented integration compares captures in the cloud against a baseline and presents visual changes for review. This is optional; Shopify does not require it.

Understand the pipeline behavior before adopting it. Percy may report a difference for review while the Playwright test run still passes. If unapproved changes must block deployment, configure the pipeline to wait for the Percy result or enforce an equivalent approval gate. Hosted snapshots are useful for teams that need centralized review or multiple browser environments, but they still supplement functional tests and Shopify’s editor-based placement checks.

Diagnose failures by layer

Symptom Likely layer First checks
Nothing renders in checkout Eligibility or configuration Store plan, target declaration, API version, app installation, and editor placement.
Static target appears but block does not Merchant placement Add the app block in the editor and test the supported placement-reference.
Works in guest checkout but not Shop Pay Context or setup Shopify Payments test mode, Shop Pay configuration, buyer data assumptions, and target location.
Works on desktop but clips on mobile Responsive rendering Viewport, text wrapping, touch target size, and screenshot baseline environment.
Screenshot fails with widespread pixel noise Environment drift Browser and OS version, viewport, fonts, device scale, headless mode, and loading synchronization.
Screenshot passes but behavior is broken Missing functional assertion Add interaction, state-transition, and backend-response checks beside the visual assertion.

Classifying the failure first prevents a code change from being used to “fix” a store-plan, editor, or environment problem. Keep the failing URL, placement reference, scenario row, browser details, screenshot, console output, and network log together in the defect.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use this release checklist

  • Confirm the extension target, API version, and applicable Plus or development-store requirement.
  • Run shopify app dev and verify that a controlled code change reloads in the preview.
  • Check every configured static target and every supported block placement with the documented placement reference.
  • Add and move the app block in the checkout editor, then test one-page, three-page, and Shop Pay contexts that apply.
  • Cover mobile and desktop, guest and Shop Pay, physical and digital products, discounts, and shipping and pickup as relevant to the extension.
  • Run supported unit tests and browser-level functional checks.
  • Capture stable visual checkpoints with Playwright screenshot assertions.
  • Keep browser, operating-system, viewport, and rendering settings consistent when creating and comparing baselines.
  • Review every visual diff, including hosted comparison results if Percy is used, and require explicit approval for intentional changes.
  • Record skipped scenarios and environment limitations instead of presenting partial coverage as proof of universal compatibility.

What a trustworthy regression signal looks like

A trustworthy result combines three kinds of evidence: the extension renders in an eligible development store and merchant-selected placement; user actions and state transitions work in the checkout contexts that matter; and controlled visual comparisons show no unexplained change. None of these layers substitutes for the others. Shopify’s preview and editor reveal platform behavior, functional automation checks logic and interaction, and screenshots reveal rendering drift. Together they give a defensible indication of regression risk without claiming that any test suite covers every merchant configuration.
