Choose the test method that matches the flow type, exercise every meaningful path and error condition, and run early tests in a sandbox with controlled data. Salesforce’s Flow Builder debugger is intended for flow types other than record-triggered and autolaunched flows; those two use Test Mode. Test Mode is currently labeled pilot or beta in Salesforce Help, so confirm it is available in your org before relying on it.
Choose the Salesforce testing tool for your flow type
Start by identifying the flow type and how it will run in production. The tools offer different kinds of feedback: the debugger provides a step-by-step execution trace and resource values, while Test Mode supports saved scenarios for record-triggered and autolaunched flows. Automated assertions require Scenario Testing Automation. Salesforce documents automated testing separately for Data Cloud-triggered flows.

If Test Mode is not enabled or available in the target org, do not assume a debugger run is an equivalent substitute for its saved scenarios or automated assertions. Use the documented debugger where appropriate, and verify the org’s current feature availability before planning a Test Mode workflow.

Prepare a safe test environment and realistic inputs
Begin in a sandbox with sample records that resemble the situations the flow must handle. Avoid starting with live customer records. If a flow sends email, direct test messages to an internal address. Salesforce recommends sandbox and sample-data testing in Testing Your Flow Before Activation.

Before running the debugger, inspect its rollback setting. A normal debugger run can execute DML and Apex actions, and without rollback selected, database changes may be committed. Closing or restarting the running flow does not undo actions that have already been committed. Salesforce explains this behavior in Test or Troubleshoot Flows with the Flow Builder Debugger.
Test Mode has rollback enabled by default. Its isolated test data feature is available only in Test Mode and uses an Apex class annotated with @testSetup; it is not a general-purpose safeguard for ordinary debugger runs. See Automated Flow Testing.

Build cases for every path and failure condition
A flow that succeeds for one familiar record may still fail at a boundary, on a default branch, or under a user who lacks access. Use a scenario matrix before executing tests, and tie each case to an expected outcome.

Salesforce recommends a test scenario for every path the flow can take. For automated scenarios, add assertions for expected resource values so the test evaluates more than whether execution completed. If an assertion fails, compare the configured condition with the runtime value, correct the responsible element or expectation, and rerun the scenario. A scenario passes only when all its assertions pass.

Run the test in the intended user context
Where access affects behavior, test as the user or role that will actually run the flow, not only as an administrator. Salesforce allows an admin to debug or test as another user only after the relevant org setting is enabled in a sandbox. The other user’s profile and permission sets govern object and field access, except for flows that always run in system context. The debugger’s guidance is in Test or Troubleshoot Flows with the Flow Builder Debugger.
A passing run under an administrator’s context does not establish that a flow will work for an intended user with narrower access. Treat the execution trace as evidence about that specific run and context, not proof that every path or permission combination has been tested.

Check versions and deployment behavior separately
For Test Mode scenarios, confirm which flow versions are selected before interpreting the result. Test Mode selects all versions by default. For Data Cloud-triggered flow testing, Salesforce says the active version is selected by default, or the latest version if no version is active. These defaults can affect which logic your scenario actually exercises.

By default, active flows deployed from a sandbox or other non-production org arrive in production inactive. Salesforce has an optional setting to deploy eligible processes and autolaunched flows as active through change sets or the Metadata API; its documented test-coverage requirement applies to those processes and autolaunched flows, not to flows with screens. See Deploy Processes and Flows as Active. Verify the target org’s deployment setting and release procedure rather than assuming a tested flow will activate automatically.

A repeatable pre-deployment checklist
- Identify the flow type, production execution context, and relevant Salesforce test feature; confirm Test Mode availability if the flow is record-triggered or autolaunched.
- Use a sandbox and realistic sample records. Route test emails internally and review actions that could affect external systems or records.
- List each Decision outcome, default branch, boundary, unexpected input, fault path, and relevant user-access case.
- For reusable automated scenarios, record the expected resource values as assertions and create coverage for each path.
- Confirm the version or versions selected for the run and test under the intended user context where permissions matter.
- Check rollback before using the debugger; do not rely on closing or restarting a run to reverse committed actions.
- Review the production deployment setting separately, including whether an eligible flow will deploy active or inactive.
