Test RF performance in a 5G or 4G prototype by first defining the exact device configuration and measurement objective, then choosing a conducted test at an RF port or an over-the-air (OTA) test that includes the antenna and enclosure. Use a controlled LTE or NR signal, calibrated instruments, documented cable or chamber conditions, and a test case from the applicable 3GPP, ETSI or certification procedure. A repeatable engineering measurement can reveal regressions; it is not automatically evidence of standards compliance.

The right method depends on whether your prototype exposes RF test ports, which LTE and NR bands and bandwidths it supports, whether MIMO or carrier aggregation is enabled, and whether you are debugging the radio chain or preparing formal conformance evidence.

Start by defining what “RF performance” means for this prototype

“RF performance” is not one measurement. A transmitter investigation may concern maximum output power, modulation quality or unwanted emissions. A receiver investigation may concern sensitivity, interference rejection or a radiated sensitivity metric. The result is meaningful only when the device under test (DUT), operating state and reference plane are fixed.

Describe the DUT and its operating states

Record the hardware revision, antenna design, enclosure, matching components, firmware and test software. List every supported LTE and NR band, channel bandwidth, duplex mode, power class or output mode, carrier-aggregation combination, MIMO arrangement and antenna path. Note whether the prototype is a bare board, a final enclosure, or a temporary fixture. A bare-board conducted result cannot answer a question about a finished phone’s antenna efficiency or hand effect.

Separate diagnostic goals from compliance goals

Write the objective beside each planned measurement. “Compare matching-network revision A with revision B at the low, middle and high channels” is an engineering objective. “Pass the NR maximum-output-power requirement” is a conformance objective that requires the exact band, power class, release, test point, tolerance and setup specified by the applicable procedure. The two activities can share equipment, but they do not support the same claim.

3GPP TS 38.508-1 defines common UE test environments and equipment arrangements for LTE and NR transmitter, receiver and receiver-performance cases. Use that environment as a map to the required connections and apparatus rather than treating it as a single universal test.

Choose conducted or OTA testing

Use conducted measurements when the prototype provides an accessible RF connector or engineering port and you need to isolate a transceiver or radio-chain path. Use OTA when the antenna, enclosure, orientation, polarization or integrated array is part of the behavior under investigation.

Decision factor Conducted test OTA test
Connection RF connector, probe or engineering access with a defined reference plane Radiated link in a controlled chamber or site with specified DUT positioning
Best question answered How the transmitter or receiver chain performs at the selected port How the complete device and antenna system radiate or receive
Typical quantities Port power and receiver performance under a defined cabled signal path Total radiated power (TRP) and total radiated sensitivity (TRS)
What it can expose Transceiver, power-amplifier, filter, switch, cable and calibration problems Antenna efficiency, enclosure detuning, orientation dependence, spatial coverage and integrated-array behavior
Main limitation It does not include antenna efficiency, user-hand effects or radiated coverage Results depend on chamber or site, mounting, orientation, polarization, sampling method and uncertainty
Repeatability Usually easier to control when cables, adapters and the reference plane are characterized Requires disciplined positioning, site validation and the specified radiated procedure

ETSI and 3GPP maintain LTE/UMTS TRP and TRS methods, NR FR1 TRP and TRS methods, and dedicated NR MIMO OTA conformance material. A nearby receiving antenna or a quick chamber sweep is not interchangeable with a standardized TRP or TRS result. State the method, site, DUT orientation and configuration with every OTA result.

Build a test matrix before connecting instruments

A matrix prevents a prototype team from testing one convenient channel and assuming that every feature behaves the same way. Make one row for each meaningful combination of band, channel position and radio feature.

  • Antenna paths: identify each transmit and receive path, diversity path, MIMO layer and switched antenna state.
  • Features: mark carrier aggregation, beam or spatial modes, and any feature that changes the number of active RF paths.
  • Purpose: label each row as diagnostic characterization, regression monitoring or a named standards test case.

Do not assume that a test case applies to every prototype. The applicable 3GPP or certification document determines the required combinations and test points.

Set up a conducted RF measurement

Define the reference plane

Connect the intended RF path through characterized cables, adapters, switches or fixtures. Decide whether the result is reported at the DUT connector, at the end of a cable, or at an instrument port. Apply the loss or gain between that plane and the instrument. Cable loss changes with frequency, so a single value copied across an entire band can create a misleading trend.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use cellular signaling, not an arbitrary tone

A cellular communication tester or an equivalent signal-generation and signaling arrangement should provide the LTE or NR waveform and protocol state required by the test case. A spectrum analyzer can observe output characteristics, but an unspecified analyzer reading does not recreate a configured UE test. For receiver work, the setup must generate the wanted signal at the defined level and, where required, controlled interference or fading.

Verify the measurement chain

Before collecting DUT data, check connectors, adapters, attenuation, instrument range and analyzer bandwidth settings. Confirm that the signal path is not compressing the instrument or the DUT. CTIA’s NR maximum-output-power procedure, which refers to 3GPP TS 38.521-1 and the common configuration in TS 38.508-1, explicitly calls for a calibrated and accurate RF instrument. Apply the same discipline to engineering measurements even when you are not making a conformance claim.

Measure transmitter performance

Maximum output power

Place the DUT in the operating state specified by the selected LTE or NR procedure, then measure at the defined port or radiated reference. For NR, CTIA’s published plan cross-references the 3GPP UE maximum-output-power procedure and its common test configuration. The correct limit depends on the supported band, power class, release and test case; there is no universal 5G output-power number that can be applied to every prototype.

  1. Choose the exact band, channel, bandwidth, duplex mode and power class from the test matrix.
  2. Configure the cellular tester to establish the required signaling state and request the specified transmit condition.
  3. Apply the characterized cable and fixture correction to the chosen reference plane.
  4. Measure with the calibrated power or measurement instrument over the time and bandwidth required by the procedure.
  5. Save the raw reading, correction, instrument settings and DUT control state with the result.

Modulation and unwanted emissions

Additional transmitter checks can include modulation or transmission quality and unwanted emissions. Select the current requirement for the exact radio, band and test case; the limits and measurement bandwidths are not interchangeable between LTE and NR. Record whether a result is a diagnostic spectrum observation or a standards measurement made with the prescribed detector, bandwidth and averaging.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Interpret power changes carefully

A lower conducted power can indicate a damaged power amplifier, a control-loop problem, excessive cable loss or a protection state. A normal conducted power does not prove good OTA coverage: a detuned antenna or lossy enclosure can still reduce radiated performance. Compare revisions only when the channel, bandwidth, power request, temperature, battery state and reference plane remain controlled.

Measure receiver performance

Use a defined wanted signal

Receiver sensitivity and robustness tests begin with a wanted LTE or NR signal generated at a known level. The signal generator or communication tester must be configured for the selected band, channel, bandwidth, modulation and protocol state. For conducted tests, apply the path correction to the DUT connector or other defined plane.

Add interference or fading when the case requires it

The common test environment can include signal generators, faders and other apparatus for receiver-performance configurations. Use the interference type, level, timing and fading profile specified by the selected procedure. A simple “signal bars” observation, a network-field-strength display or a nearby transmitter does not measure receiver sensitivity or interference rejection.

Test radiated sensitivity when the complete device matters

When the antenna and enclosure are in scope, use a radiated TRS method rather than substituting a cabled sensitivity result. OTA receiver results depend on DUT orientation, polarization, mounting, chamber or site, sampling and uncertainty. For a MIMO device, follow the applicable NR MIMO OTA method instead of reducing the device to one arbitrary antenna direction.

Run an OTA test without losing control of the variables

OTA work evaluates the assembled product, so mechanical details become RF variables. Fix the DUT mount, height, orientation, polarization, cable routing for any auxiliary connection, battery condition and software state. Use the specified signal source, chamber or site validation and sampling procedure. If the product has beam or spatial modes, state which mode was active and how the measurement covered the required directions.

TRP describes total radiated transmit performance, while TRS describes total radiated receive sensitivity for the applicable method. Both are method-dependent quantities. Report the radio generation, frequency range, antenna arrangement, chamber or site, DUT configuration and uncertainty alongside the value. Do not label an informal near-field scan as TRP or TRS unless it follows the relevant standardized procedure.

Record every condition needed to reproduce a result

Use one record per measurement or automated run. At minimum, include:

  • DUT serial number, hardware revision, enclosure and antenna or matching-network revision.
  • Firmware, modem software and test application versions.
  • Band, channel, bandwidth, duplex mode, power state and active radio features.
  • Antenna path, MIMO layer, carrier-aggregation state and beam or spatial configuration.
  • Conducted connector and reference plane, or OTA mount, orientation and polarization.
  • Cable, adapter and fixture identifiers, measured loss or gain, and calibration date or status.
  • Instrument model, measurement bandwidth, detector, averaging, range and software settings.
  • Signal-generator, fader and interference settings for receiver cases.
  • Chamber or site identifier, environmental conditions and setup diagram for OTA work.
  • Raw readings, applied corrections, uncertainty basis and the standard or test-case revision.

Repeat key cases after a hardware revision, antenna retune, enclosure change, matching-network change or modem-firmware update. A trend is useful only when the method and configuration are held constant.

Understand engineering characterization versus conformance

Engineering characterization answers questions such as “Did the new antenna match improve the upper band?” or “Which receiver path regressed after the firmware change?” It can use a reduced matrix if that scope is clearly documented.

Formal conformance follows the applicable current 3GPP, ETSI or certification plan with prescribed configurations, test points, tolerances, uncertainty treatment and calibrated equipment. CTIA’s published plans cross-reference the relevant 3GPP procedures and setup specifications. A prototype reading, even when carefully taken, is not a certificate or a pass unless it was produced under the required program and method.

Standards change. The directly accessed common-environment reference is ETSI TS 138 508-1 V17.7.0, published in February 2023. ETSI listings show TR 37.902 V18.1.0 in January 2025 and Release 17 OTA material in August 2024. The CTIA document filename identifies version 01.50 V6.0.0. Before quoting a numeric limit or declaring compliance, check the latest applicable release, correction set, certification plan, device geography and target program.

Select equipment by capability

A credible conducted laboratory may need a cellular communication tester, signal generator, spectrum analyzer or measurement receiver, power-measurement capability, calibrated RF cables and adapters, and switching or attenuation hardware. Receiver-performance cases can additionally require controlled interference and fading generation. OTA work adds a suitable radiated environment, calibrated positioning and the method-specific antenna or measurement system.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose major instruments by the capabilities your matrix actually uses:

  • Supported LTE and NR bands, channel bandwidths and waveform or modulation requirements.
  • Signaling and protocol support for the operating states your DUT must enter.
  • Number of simultaneous RF paths for diversity, carrier aggregation and MIMO.
  • Transmitter power, modulation-quality and unwanted-emission measurement functions.
  • Receiver sensitivity, interference and fading capabilities.
  • OTA compatibility, automation interfaces, uncertainty information and calibration or service access.

For a simple conducted accessory search, “50-ohm SMA RF test cables and adapters” is a practical query. Confirm connector gender, frequency range, insertion loss, impedance and power handling before purchase. Characterize the cable in your setup and maintain reference-plane discipline. These accessories do not replace a cellular tester, calibrated analyzer, fading system, OTA chamber or conformance laboratory.

Troubleshoot common misleading results

Power is unexpectedly low

  • Recheck cable and adapter loss at the test frequency and verify the correction sign.
  • Inspect connectors, torque, switch paths and temporary fixtures for damage or mismatch.
  • Confirm that the DUT is in the requested power state rather than thermal, battery or protection control.
  • Repeat at another channel to separate a narrowband fixture problem from a band-edge design problem.

Receiver sensitivity changes between runs

  • Verify wanted-signal level at the DUT reference plane, not merely at the generator output.
  • Check generator attenuation, fader state, interference timing and error-counter reset behavior.
  • Keep firmware, protocol state, temperature and battery condition fixed.
  • For OTA, reset mount, orientation, polarization and cable routing before comparing values.

Conducted and OTA results disagree

That disagreement may be the result rather than a mistake: conducted testing isolates the radio path, while OTA includes antenna efficiency, enclosure interaction and spatial response. First verify reference planes and calibration, then treat the difference as information about the integrated device instead of forcing the two numbers to match.

When to use a specialist RF or OTA laboratory

Escalate when the team lacks LTE or NR signaling capability, calibrated power and spectrum instrumentation, a controlled OTA environment, or the expertise to apply the exact test case. Before engaging a laboratory, confirm its supported bands and technologies, conducted and OTA methods, MIMO scope, calibration status, accreditation or scope where relevant, automation support and geographic availability. Ask for the exact standard revision and test configuration that will appear on the report. A generic “RF test” quotation is not enough for a conformance decision.
