Test responsive images by checking both the image URL the browser requests and how that image looks in the page. For each meaningful viewport and device-pixel ratio (DPR), record the image’s rendered CSS size, inspect the network request, then check sharpness, crop, and layout stability. A device emulator preview alone does not confirm which srcset candidate loaded.
1. Make sure the browser is using the intended layout viewport
Start by checking that the document has a viewport meta tag such as <meta name="viewport" content="width=device-width, initial-scale=1">. Without an appropriate viewport declaration, some mobile browsers may lay out a page against a wider virtual viewport and scale it down, making responsive-image behavior misleading. Use the site’s real responsive breakpoints rather than assuming universal “mobile,” “tablet,” or “desktop” widths. The right test widths are the ones at which your layout changes or the image slot changes.

2. Check the image markup and expected slot
For width-based srcset
With candidates such as 480w and 800w, each descriptor should match the referenced file’s intrinsic pixel width. The sizes attribute tells the browser how wide the image is expected to appear in the layout; the browser considers that slot and the device’s pixel density when choosing a candidate. A wrong sizes value can lead to a selection that is too small or unnecessarily large. See MDN’s responsive images guide and the img reference.

For art direction with <picture>
A <picture> element can select a different composition under a media condition. Test just below and above each relevant condition, and verify the requested URL in the network panel; seeing a plausible crop does not prove that the intended source was selected.
Reserve the image’s layout space
Check that the image has appropriate width and height attributes reflecting its intrinsic dimensions. These let the browser reserve space before the file finishes loading, helping prevent unexpected layout shifts. Confirm the rendered aspect ratio is the one the design expects. 3. Build a viewport and density test matrix
Keep the page and image constant, then vary one condition at a time. Include the viewport widths where the layout or image slot changes and test at DPR 1 and a higher density such as DPR 2. Add other densities if they matter to the devices your audience uses.

Responsive selection can be affected by viewport size, DPR, zoom, orientation, and network conditions, among other browser factors. The W3C’s responsive-images use cases describe support for viewport dimensions, screen resolution, and DPR; they do not prescribe universal breakpoint values. Use your own layout conditions. 4. Verify the requested image in developer tools
- Open the page in a browser’s responsive or device-emulation mode and set the target viewport width and density.
- Open the browser’s Network panel, reload the page, and filter for image requests if needed. Chrome DevTools and Firefox DevTools Network Monitor both let you inspect requested resources; see Chrome DevTools Network and Firefox Network Monitor.
- Identify the request for the responsive image and record its URL. If cache may obscure the selection, disable the cache in the panel or start with a fresh page load.
- Record the image’s rendered CSS width and the matching
sizescondition alongside the request. A URL by itself is not enough to diagnose a mismatch. - Repeat after changing one test axis, such as DPR or viewport width, so you can tell which condition changed the selection.
Browser emulation is useful for repeatable checks. If the requirement is to confirm behavior on a particular physical device, test on that hardware as well; emulation is not a substitute for every real-device check.
5. Inspect the rendered result, not only the request
- Sharpness: At the actual display size, look for softness or visible pixelation, particularly on high-density screens.
- Crop and composition: Confirm the intended subject remains visible at each tested width and that any art-directed source is appropriate.
- Aspect ratio and layout: Check that reserved space matches the displayed image and that loading it does not cause an unexpected shift.
- Selection at boundaries: For
sizesor<picture>media conditions, compare the request on both sides of the condition boundary.
6. Common problems and how to troubleshoot them
The browser keeps requesting an unexpected candidate
First verify the image’s rendered CSS slot and the applicable sizes condition. Then check that each w descriptor matches that file’s intrinsic width. Change viewport or DPR independently and inspect the request after a fresh load; cache can make a previous response misleading.

The page looks like desktop content scaled down on mobile
Check for a viewport meta tag that sets the layout width to the device width. A wider virtual layout viewport can affect both page layout and your interpretation of image selection.
The image is blurry despite a high-DPR test
Compare the selected candidate with the rendered CSS width and device density, and confirm that the candidate file actually has the intrinsic dimensions described by its w descriptor. Also check whether zoom or orientation changed the conditions you expected.
The right subject or crop does not appear
Inspect the requested URL and the <picture> media condition, especially near its boundary. If the request is the intended source, review the source composition and the CSS crop separately.

The page jumps when the image loads
Check that intrinsic width and height are present and correspond to the image dimensions, then confirm the reserved aspect ratio matches the displayed result.
Emulation and a device appear different
Repeat the same viewport, orientation, and density checks in the browser tools, then verify on the physical device if actual-device behavior is part of the requirement. The checks here do not establish a universal difference between emulation and hardware.
