Test the component’s user-visible contract in React Testing Library (RTL) with a DOM environment such as jsdom, and replace only the browser API that the environment lacks with a controllable test double. Render the component, interact through accessible controls, and assert on the resulting DOM. Move the test to a real browser when the behavior depends on layout, navigation, scrolling geometry, native input, permissions, or browser scheduling.

What this testing approach can—and cannot—prove

A component test should answer a concrete question such as: “When this browser signal changes, does the user see the correct status?” The test supplies a controlled signal, exercises the component as a user would, and checks an observable result. It does not need to reproduce an entire browser to establish that contract.

React Testing Library is a component-testing utility, not a test runner. Its guiding principle is: “The more your tests resemble the way your software is used, the more confidence they can give you.” That means querying the DOM by role, label, text, or another user-facing affordance instead of reaching into component instances or private state.

jsdom supplies a Node-based DOM that is useful for ordinary rendering and interaction. It is still a simulation: React’s testing guidance specifically calls out missing layout and navigation behavior. A passing jsdom test therefore proves how your component responds to the values and callbacks you modeled, not that a browser calculates geometry, performs navigation, grants a permission, or schedules callbacks exactly as a particular browser does.

Choose the smallest environment that can establish the behavior

A button click changes visible UI after a controlled API callback RTL in jsdom The component responds to the controlled input and produces the expected DOM output.
The component reads an API absent from the test environment jsdom plus a scoped test double or polyfill The component handles the modeled values, callbacks, and cleanup path; it does not establish native browser correctness.
Layout measurements, scrolling geometry, navigation, or native input behavior A real-browser test The behavior runs against an actual browser implementation.
A workflow spanning routes, sessions, services, or persisted state Browser automation, possibly with backend assertions The larger workflow and its side effects can be observed together.

React’s testing guidance names Cypress, Playwright, and Puppeteer as end-to-end options. The choice is about the claim you need to make, not about using a more powerful tool by default.

Start by writing the component’s browser contract

Before configuring a mock, record exactly what crosses the environment boundary. This prevents a stub that merely stops a crash from being mistaken for a meaningful test.

  • Input: What does the component read or subscribe to? Examples include a returned value, a constructor option, a listener, or a callback payload.
  • Trigger: What event causes the component to evaluate that input—initial render, a user action, a timer, or a callback fired by the API?
  • Visible outcome: Which role, label, text, status message, or other DOM change should result?
  • Side effect: Does the component add or remove a listener, start a request, update storage, or change navigation?
  • Cleanup: What must stop happening after unmount, a dependency change, or a second subscription?

For an API such as an observer, the useful contract is not “the constructor exists.” It is “when the observer reports the modeled condition, the component reveals the control; when it reports the opposite condition, the control is hidden; unmounting disconnects the observer.” Your test double must expose enough control to drive those cases.

Configure a DOM test environment without assuming runner defaults

RTL’s setup documentation describes Jest with jest-environment-jsdom and also explains how to supply jsdom when using other Node-based setups. Do not infer the configuration from a different project: Jest defaults vary by version, and the setup notes specifically call out that Jest 27 no longer defaults to jsdom. Confirm the runner, installed RTL version, and environment package in the project before copying configuration.

Your environment checklist should include:

  • A Node-based test runner configured to execute React tests.
  • A DOM environment such as jsdom for tests that render elements.
  • React Testing Library and its DOM assertions, installed in versions compatible with the project’s React and runner versions.
  • A user-interaction helper appropriate to the project, rather than direct calls to component internals.
  • A reset strategy for every global API replacement or listener registry created by a test.

RTL’s render function creates a container appended to document.body. Queries use a base element that defaults to the body, which is useful when the component renders a portal outside its local container. The API also exports an act wrapper, but normal asynchronous interaction and query patterns should be your first choice; add explicit coordination only when the test genuinely requires it.

Build a narrow, controllable test double

Mock the environment boundary, not the component. A good double has four properties:

  1. It matches the surface the component consumes. Provide only the constructor, method, property, or listener behavior the component actually uses.
  2. The test can drive it. Keep a reference to registered callbacks or expose a test-only trigger so the test can model success, failure, and changes over time.
  3. It records cleanup. Track whether listeners are removed, observers disconnected, or handles released during unmount and replacement.
  4. It is isolated. Install it at the narrowest useful scope, then restore the original global and clear recorded callbacks so test order cannot affect results.

A generic shape looks like this inside a test module (the names are illustrative, not a drop-in implementation for a particular browser API):

const originalApi = globalThis.SomeBrowserApi;
let trigger;
let cleanupCalled;

beforeEach(() => {
  globalThis.SomeBrowserApi = function (callback) {
    trigger = callback;
    return {
      stop() {
        cleanupCalled = true;
      }
    };
  };
});

afterEach(() => {
  globalThis.SomeBrowserApi = originalApi;
  trigger = undefined;
  cleanupCalled = false;
});

Adapt the shape to the real API’s constructor arguments, return values, callback payload, and cleanup method. A stub that returns a constant but cannot fire the callback cannot test the component’s response to change. A mock that remains installed after the test can make unrelated tests pass or fail depending on execution order.

Use user-facing queries and interactions

Render the component with the same meaningful props and context that a user-facing scenario needs. Then locate controls by accessible role and name, form labels, visible text, or another practical semantic query. Test IDs are an escape hatch when no useful label or text exists, not the default selector for every element.

Prefer an interaction sequence over a direct state manipulation:

  1. Render the component in the configured DOM environment.
  2. Find the control a user would operate, such as a button, textbox, checkbox, or link.
  3. Perform the interaction with the project’s user-event helper.
  4. Trigger the controlled browser callback or return value.
  5. Wait using the library’s asynchronous queries when the UI update is asynchronous.
  6. Assert on the role, accessible name, text, or status the user can observe.

For example, a test for a visibility signal should assert that the relevant button becomes available after the test double reports the condition. It should not assert that a particular state hook contains true or that a specific internal div exists unless that structure is itself a documented public contract.

  • Initial state: The UI shown before the API has supplied a result.
  • Positive result: The callback or return value that enables the feature.
  • Negative result: The opposite value, including a transition back from the positive state.
  • Failure or unavailable API: The fallback UI or error handling when the environment cannot provide the feature.
  • Cleanup: Unmounting or changing dependencies removes the old subscription and prevents stale callbacks from updating the UI.

When a component subscribes during an effect, test a dependency change if the effect is expected to resubscribe. Keep references to old callbacks in the double and verify that invoking an obsolete callback no longer changes the current UI. This catches leaks that a one-time render test misses.

Handle asynchronous updates deliberately

Browser callbacks, promises, and request handlers often update React state after the initial render. Use RTL’s asynchronous query patterns to wait for a user-visible result rather than inserting arbitrary delays. If a callback is fired synchronously by your double, the update may still be scheduled by React; let the library’s normal interaction and assertion flow coordinate it.

Use an explicit act wrapper only when you are driving a state-changing operation outside the normal interaction helpers and the test runner requires that coordination. An act call is not evidence that a browser API was implemented; it only ensures React processes the update before the assertion.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Mock network requests at the request boundary

For components that combine a browser API with data fetching, the official RTL example recommends Mock Service Worker (MSW) for declarative request mocking. This keeps the component’s request code intact while the test controls the server response. Define handlers for the success and failure responses your UI must render, then assert on the resulting DOM rather than mocking the component’s fetch wrapper.

Check the installed runner and environment before copying an example. The RTL example warns that jsdom does not include fetch by default and that fetch availability and setup differ by runner. If the environment lacks fetch, provide the project’s supported fetch implementation or configure the test runner as documented for its version; do not assume that a test passing on one machine has the same globals elsewhere.

Keep network handlers and browser-API doubles independent. One test should be able to establish whether a failure came from the API signal or from the response returned by the mocked service. Reset handlers and restore globals after each test.

API-specific guidance for common browser features

The general technique applies to IntersectionObserver, ResizeObserver, matchMedia, geolocation, storage, and online-status checks, but the exact mock shape is API-specific. Establish the component’s contract before selecting a polyfill or writing a double.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Intersection and resize observers

Identify the options passed to the constructor, the callback entries the component reads, and the method used for cleanup. Drive a sequence of entries that represents the states the component cares about. A callback-only stub does not verify scrolling, layout, threshold calculation, or browser scheduling; those claims require a real browser test.

Media queries

Record whether the component reads an initial match value, registers a modern change listener, supports a legacy listener shape, or performs all three. Test the initial branch and a change event if the UI is meant to react while mounted. The double should expose the same event payload shape the component consumes.

Geolocation and permissions

Model success, denial, and error callbacks at the boundary. This verifies rendering and fallback decisions, not permission prompts, user consent, sensor accuracy, or browser-specific permission policy. Those behaviors belong in a browser-level test where they can be configured and observed.

Storage and online status

Provide controlled reads and writes for the storage keys or status properties the component uses. Test missing, malformed, and updated values when those cases affect the UI. Restore the original storage object or methods after each test so data cannot leak between cases.

  • Following a workflow across authentication, routes, backend services, and persisted state.

A productive test suite can contain both levels: fast jsdom tests for deterministic component contracts and a smaller set of real-browser tests for native behavior. State clearly which level supports each assertion so a green unit test is not misread as cross-browser evidence.

Troubleshoot the failures that matter

“The API is not defined”

The selected DOM environment does not implement that browser feature. Add a scoped test double or a compatible polyfill for the contract under test, and verify that the test file is actually running in the intended environment. Do not silently add a broad global mock if only one component needs the feature.

“The test passes, but the browser feature is broken”

The test probably proved only the modeled callback and DOM response. Add a browser test for the native behavior—especially geometry, navigation, permissions, or scheduling—and keep the jsdom test focused on the component’s response.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“Tests fail only in a certain order”

A global replacement, event listener, mock handler, or storage value was not restored. Capture the original value, reset recorded callbacks and handlers, and restore it in teardown for every test.

“The assertion runs before the UI updates”

The update is asynchronous. Use RTL’s asynchronous queries and wait for the observable result. If you manually invoke a callback outside a user interaction, coordinate that state change with the library’s supported act mechanism rather than adding a fixed timeout.

“The test is brittle after a markup refactor”

The selector is coupled to incidental structure. Replace class-name or deep-node assertions with a role, accessible name, label, status, or visible text that describes what the user relies on. Use a test ID only when no practical semantic query exists.

“A request test behaves differently across runners”

Check fetch availability, the configured DOM environment, MSW setup, and package versions for that runner. The fact that one setup supplies fetch does not mean every jsdom configuration does.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A repeatable review checklist

  • Can you state the browser-dependent contract in one sentence?
  • Does the test render and interact through the public UI rather than private state?
  • Is the mock limited to the API surface the component consumes?
  • Can the test drive every meaningful callback, return value, and error branch?
  • Does it assert on accessible, user-visible output?
  • Does it verify cleanup when the component unmounts or dependencies change?
  • Are globals, handlers, listeners, and storage restored after each test?
  • Does the test avoid claiming native layout, navigation, permission, or scheduling correctness?
  • Are network requests mocked at the request boundary, with fetch availability confirmed for the runner?
  • Would a real-browser test be needed for any part of the requirement?

How to describe the evidence in code review

Be precise about the boundary. A statement such as “the component displays the sticky action after the modeled observer callback reports visibility” is supported by a controlled jsdom test. “The action appears at the correct scroll position in Chrome and Safari” is not; it requires browser automation and geometry assertions in those implementations.

This distinction makes failures easier to diagnose. When the component contract changes, update the focused RTL test. When browser behavior, layout, or a multi-page workflow changes, update the real-browser coverage that owns that claim.

Key source guidance and version context

The React Testing Library introduction was last updated June 3, 2024 and documents the user-oriented, framework-independent approach. Its setup guidance covers jsdom with Jest and use with other Node-based runners, including version-specific notes about Jest defaults. React’s testing guidance explains jsdom’s missing layout and navigation behavior, selective mocking of environment features without Node equivalents, and browser/end-to-end testing with tools such as Cypress, Playwright, and Puppeteer. The RTL example documents user interaction, MSW for request mocking, and the runner-dependent fetch caveat. The RTL API documentation describes the default render container, the body-based query root useful for portals, and the exported act wrapper.
