Test the memory before buying replacement RAM. If Windows still runs, start with Windows Memory Diagnostic. If the result is inconclusive, crashes continue, or you need a test outside the operating system, boot PassMark MemTest86 from a USB drive and let its configured sequence finish. A reported error identifies a problem somewhere in the memory system; it does not, by itself, prove that one particular DIMM is defective.
The safest replacement decision comes after you restore conservative settings, repeat the test, and isolate removable modules by stick and slot. Replace or submit a module for warranty service only when repeatable evidence points to that module and the replacement is confirmed compatible with the exact computer or motherboard.
Why test RAM before replacing it?
Unstable memory can produce blue-screen errors, application crashes, corrupted files, failed installations and random restarts. Those symptoms overlap with CPU, motherboard, firmware, storage and driver problems, so purchasing a new kit based on symptoms alone can waste money or leave the real fault untouched.
A diagnostic gives you evidence, but the evidence has limits. MemTest86 exercises the processor, caches and motherboard as well as memory. PassMark therefore warns that a reported error can result from incompatible components or marginal operating conditions, not only a failed RAM module. Read the result as “this configuration produced an error” and then investigate which part of the configuration is responsible.

Choose the right first test
- Windows still starts and you want a quick check: run Windows Memory Diagnostic, which is built into Windows.
- Windows is unreliable, or the first check is clean but symptoms remain: use a standalone MemTest86 boot test so the installed operating system is not involved.
- An error appears: do not order RAM immediately. Return memory settings to conservative defaults, retest, and isolate modules and slots.
- No error appears: treat that as a clean result for the completed configured run, not proof that every intermittent memory or system fault has been eliminated.
Run Windows Memory Diagnostic
Microsoft lists Windows Memory Diagnostic as a check when investigating memory-related stop-code problems. It is convenient because no external media is required.
Start the diagnostic
- Save your work and close open applications. The check requires a restart.
- Open the Start menu and search for Windows Memory Diagnostic. You can also launch the Windows diagnostic command by opening the Run dialog and entering
mdsched.exe. - Choose the option to restart immediately and check for problems, or schedule the check for the next restart if you need to finish working first.
- Allow the computer to restart and complete the memory check. Do not power it off while the test is running.
Find the result in Event Viewer
Windows may not display a prominent summary after the desktop returns. Microsoft documents the result location as Event Viewer > Applications and Services Logs > Microsoft > Windows > MemoryDiagnostics-Results > Debug. Open the event recorded for the latest run and read whether Windows reported detected problems. The Microsoft troubleshooting guidance is available at Microsoft Support.
A clean Windows result is useful as an initial screen. If the machine continues to crash, move to an independent boot test rather than assuming the issue is solved.

Run MemTest86 from a bootable USB drive
MemTest86 runs before Windows loads, giving you a separate check of the memory subsystem. The official download page lists MemTest86 11.7 Build 1000. The V11.7 image requires UEFI firmware; PassMark directs computers that can boot only in legacy BIOS mode to its older V4 release. Verify the firmware mode before choosing an image.
What you need
| Requirement | What the official instructions specify | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| MemTest86 image | V11.7 Build 1000 for UEFI systems; V4 for older BIOS-only systems | The image must match the firmware’s boot capability. |
| USB flash drive | More than 1 GB | The drive holds the boot image and will be reformatted during creation. |
| Backup of USB contents | Required before writing | Writing the image erases data on the selected drive. |
| Access to firmware or a boot menu | Required to start from USB | The computer must boot the test instead of the installed operating system. |
Download the appropriate release from PassMark’s MemTest86 download page. Use a spare USB drive whenever possible. Do not assume a drive is empty because it appears unused; check its contents and capacity first.

Create the USB test disk in Windows
- Download the MemTest86 package and extract its files to a folder.
- Insert the USB drive you have chosen for the test.
- Run the included imageUSB utility.
- Select the correct USB drive in the utility, then choose the option to write the MemTest86 image.
- Confirm the erase warning only after checking the drive selection and backing up anything you need. The imaging operation destroys the existing contents of that drive.
- Wait for imageUSB to finish, then safely eject the drive if you are moving it to another computer.
PassMark’s Windows media instructions, including the imageUSB workflow and the data-loss warning, are at Creating a MemTest86 boot disk in Windows.
Boot the computer from the USB drive
- Leave the USB drive inserted and restart the computer.
- Open the one-time boot menu during startup, or enter the firmware setup and put the USB device first in the boot order. The key varies by computer and motherboard, so use the documentation for that system.
- Select the USB device and start MemTest86.
- Allow the configured test sequence to run to completion. Record the result and, if an error occurs, note the test number, address information and the module/slot arrangement shown on screen.
PassMark’s boot instructions explain the boot-menu process and firmware considerations at Booting MemTest86. If the computer skips the USB, revisit the boot-menu selection, confirm that the drive was created successfully, and check whether the firmware is UEFI or legacy BIOS.

MemTest86 distinguishes a completed sequence from one that was stopped early. PassMark defines the labels as follows:
| Result | Meaning | What to do next |
|---|---|---|
| PASS | All configured tests completed and no errors were detected. | Use it as evidence that this run was clean. If symptoms continue, keep troubleshooting. |
| FAIL | All configured tests completed and at least one error was detected. | Investigate settings, modules, slots and compatibility before replacing parts. |
| INCOMPLETE PASS | The configured sequence did not finish and no error was recorded before it stopped. | Run the test again to obtain a completed result. |
| INCOMPLETE FAIL | The sequence did not finish and an error was recorded. | Repeat under controlled settings; the unfinished run is not equivalent to a completed FAIL. |
The definitions above come from PassMark’s MemTest86 test-results documentation. A PASS means only that the configured tests completed without detecting an error in that run. It cannot guarantee that an intermittent fault will never occur, especially if the machine behaves differently when warm, under a different workload or after a configuration change.
What to do when a test reports an error
Treat the first error as a prompt for controlled diagnosis, not an automatic order to replace a DIMM. PassMark notes that errors can involve the CPU, caches or motherboard, and that incompatibility or marginal operating conditions can make results vary between runs.

1. Return memory settings to conservative defaults
If the firmware uses an overclocked memory profile or manually increased speed, voltage or tightened timings, restore the standard or automatic memory settings. The purpose is to test whether the system is stable at its normal specification. Save the change, boot the test again and record whether the error remains.
2. Repeat the test under the same conditions
Use the same firmware settings, test image and hardware arrangement for the repeat run. A result that appears only once is weaker evidence than an error that recurs under controlled conditions. Conversely, a clean rerun does not erase the original symptom; note both outcomes and continue if crashes persist.
3. Test removable modules one at a time
Power the computer down completely, disconnect it from power and follow the system or motherboard service instructions before opening the case. If you are not comfortable working inside the computer, have a qualified technician perform this step.
- Record the original module arrangement and identify each stick and slot.
- Leave one module installed and run the same diagnostic.
- Repeat with the other module or modules, keeping the slot and settings consistent.
- If practical, repeat a suspect module in another recommended slot.
This is an isolation method, not a guaranteed component-level diagnosis. If an error follows one stick across slots while another stick passes, the evidence against the moving stick is stronger. If the error stays with one slot, appears only when two modules are installed, or occurs only with a particular combination, investigate the motherboard, firmware settings and compatibility instead of blaming a single DIMM.
4. Check compatibility before selecting a replacement
Use the exact computer or motherboard documentation to confirm the required memory type, capacity limits, module arrangement and supported speeds. Capacity alone is not a compatibility specification. A kit that fits physically can still be unsupported or unstable in a particular system.

PassMark describes module testing and selective replacement as troubleshooting approaches in its MemTest86 troubleshooting guide. Follow that guidance while keeping a written record of which stick, slot and settings produced each result.
When replacement or warranty service is justified
Consider a module replacement or warranty claim when all of the following are true:
- Errors are repeatable with conservative, appropriate settings.
- The error follows one module when modules are tested individually and in more than one suitable slot, rather than remaining tied to a slot or combination.
- The system’s firmware is current enough for the hardware and the memory configuration matches the computer or motherboard documentation.
- Other likely causes, such as an incompatible combination or a problematic slot, have been considered.
If those conditions are not met, replacing RAM may mask the symptom without fixing the cause. Keep testing the board, firmware and configuration, or obtain professional diagnosis. When replacement is justified, match the exact specification documented for the system; there is no universal RAM model that is correct for every computer.

The test says PASS, but crashes continue
Confirm that the run actually completed and was not an incomplete pass. Then repeat with the standalone test if you used only Windows Memory Diagnostic. A clean run narrows the possibilities but does not rule out an intermittent memory-system issue, a slot problem, incompatibility or another hardware fault.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe test reports an error only with a performance profile enabled
Disable the overclocked profile and retest at conservative defaults. If errors disappear, the profile or its operating conditions are implicated; do not describe the DIMM as conclusively defective solely because the profile failed.

Every module passes alone, but the pair fails together
Check the motherboard’s supported combinations, slot population order and firmware settings. The interaction can indicate compatibility or board-level issues rather than two independently bad modules.
The error follows a slot instead of a stick
Reseat the module, inspect the slot for obvious physical contamination or damage without forcing anything, and check the motherboard documentation. If the same slot continues to fail with a known-good module, the board or its connection deserves attention.
The USB drive no longer shows its old files
This is expected after imageUSB writes the MemTest86 image: the operation erases the selected drive. Restore the drive only after the test is finished, and never use a drive containing files you have not backed up.
The computer will not boot MemTest86
Verify that the USB image was created successfully, select the drive from the one-time boot menu, and confirm the firmware requirement. V11.7 requires UEFI; a legacy BIOS-only computer needs the older V4 release. Consult the computer or motherboard manual for the correct boot-menu key and firmware settings.
Windows Memory Diagnostic versus MemTest86
| Comparison point | Windows Memory Diagnostic | MemTest86 |
|---|---|---|
| Where it runs | Starts through Windows and restarts the computer to perform the check. | Boots independently from USB before the installed operating system. |
| Setup effort | Built in; no external media is needed. | Requires downloading an image, preparing a USB drive and selecting it at boot. |
| Result location | Event Viewer: Applications and Services Logs > Microsoft > Windows > MemoryDiagnostics-Results > Debug. | Displayed in the MemTest86 interface and documented in its result terminology. |
| Firmware requirement | Uses the installed Windows environment. | V11.7 requires UEFI; legacy BIOS-only systems need V4. |
| Best use | A convenient first check when Windows remains usable. | An independent follow-up when you need to remove Windows from the test path or investigate a persistent problem. |
| What a clean result proves | That this diagnostic did not report an error in its run. | That the configured MemTest86 sequence completed without a detected error in that run. |
Neither tool should be treated as universally conclusive. Use the result to decide the next diagnostic step, then correlate it with module isolation, firmware settings and the computer’s documented compatibility requirements.
Quick Recap
A practical replacement decision
- Run Windows Memory Diagnostic if Windows is usable, and read the recorded event.
- If symptoms remain or you need an independent check, prepare the correct MemTest86 image on a spare USB drive larger than 1 GB.
- Complete the configured boot test and classify the outcome as PASS, FAIL, INCOMPLETE PASS or INCOMPLETE FAIL.
- For an error, restore conservative settings and repeat under controlled conditions.
- Isolate removable modules by stick and slot, recording every result.
- Only pursue replacement or warranty service when repeatable evidence follows a module and the replacement specification is confirmed for the exact system.
