Antihost offers Linux VPS plans with full root access, unlimited traffic on a 1 Gbps port and a 14-day free trial.
There is no universal visitor number for a VPS. Its practical capacity is the highest representative workload it can sustain while meeting your latency, error-rate, availability and resource-use objectives. A small site can overload a large VPS with an inefficient query or an uncached endpoint, while a well-cached site can serve many more visits than its raw CPU specification suggests.
The reliable way to find the limit is to load-test the complete application path—web server, application code, database, cache, TLS, queues, storage, external calls and network—then report the last passing workload with enough headroom for normal bursts.
Define what “how much traffic” means
“Visitors per month” is not a useful capacity metric by itself. One page view may create a single cached document request; another may trigger dozens of API, image, authentication and database requests. A useful test describes traffic as requests per second, concurrent user journeys or completed iterations, together with the exact request mix.
For a page with many backend calls, define one iteration clearly and report both iterations and total HTTP requests. Otherwise, two tests can claim the same number of “users” while generating very different work on the VPS.

Capacity is also a service-level decision. The limit is reached when any required objective fails: latency becomes unacceptable, errors exceed the allowed rate, availability drops, a queue grows without recovering, or a resource remains saturated. CPU reaching an arbitrary percentage is not, by itself, a valid verdict.
Set acceptance criteria before generating load
Write the pass/fail rules before the test so that you do not move the goalposts after seeing a graph. Use the application’s real SLOs where they exist. If they do not, choose conservative provisional values and label them as test assumptions.
| Criterion | What to define | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Throughput | Requests per second, completed iterations per second, or concurrent journeys | States exactly how much work the VPS must sustain |
| Latency | Maximum acceptable p95 and p99 response time; include a timeout limit | Percentiles expose slow users hidden by an average |
| Errors | Maximum failed-request percentage and which HTTP statuses count as failures | Prevents a high rate of 5xx, timeouts or rejected connections being treated as success |
| Availability | Whether every critical flow must remain usable throughout the run | A fast health endpoint cannot compensate for a broken login or checkout path |
| Resources | Operational ceilings for CPU, memory, swap, disk I/O, database connections, queue depth and network | Shows when there is too little safety margin even before user-facing SLOs fail |
| Abort condition | The exact threshold that stops the ramp automatically | Limits damage to a live environment and makes runs repeatable |
Resource ceilings are guardrails, not substitutes for user-facing objectives. A workload that holds CPU at 70 percent but causes p99 latency to exceed your SLO is a failure. Conversely, a brief CPU spike may be acceptable if latency, errors and recovery remain within policy.
Build a representative workload
Include the flows that actually consume capacity
List the important unauthenticated and authenticated URLs or API journeys. Include reads and writes, search, uploads, background-job submission, session refresh and any expensive reports that real users invoke. Weight each flow to match observed production proportions when you have analytics; otherwise document the assumed mix.
Model state, data and caching
Use realistic payload sizes, varied records and valid authentication. Reusing one account or one database row can create an unrealistically hot cache and hide lock contention. Test the cache state you care about: a warm-cache run answers a different question from a cold-cache run. Record whether cookies, connection reuse and compression are enabled.
Add pacing and think time
Real users do not submit requests continuously with zero delay. Add pauses between steps or use a request-rate model that reflects the expected arrival pattern. A sudden, unpaced flood is useful for a separate stress experiment, but it should not be presented as normal visitor capacity.

Control third-party dependencies
Grafana advises excluding third-party requests unless you own them or have explicit authorization to include them. Stub or isolate payment, email, analytics and other external services where possible. If an external call remains in the path, record its latency and failure behavior separately so that an outage outside the VPS is not misreported as VPS capacity.
Establish a baseline
Start with a small load that should be comfortably below capacity. Confirm that the script, authentication, data setup and monitoring are working before increasing traffic. Record:
- Request count and achieved request or iteration rate
- Average, p50, p95 and p99 response time
- Failed requests, timeouts and HTTP status distribution
- Active virtual users, open connections and completed iterations
- CPU utilization, load average, memory, swap and process counts
- Disk throughput, latency and available space
- Database connection use, query latency, locks and slow queries
- Queue depth and worker utilization
- Network throughput, retransmits and connection errors
Compare the rate requested by the generator with the rate the VPS actually received. A gap can indicate generator saturation, network limits, connection errors or application back-pressure rather than spare VPS capacity.
Ramp up gradually and find the breakpoint
- Prepare isolation and rollback. Prefer staging with production-like data and configuration. If production is unavoidable, schedule a controlled window, notify stakeholders, cap the test and prepare a way to disable the script.
- Start below expected demand. Run the baseline long enough to observe stable percentiles and resource trends.
- Increase in steps. Add virtual users or request rate in small increments. Hold each step long enough to reach steady behavior; a short spike can hide connection pools filling or queues growing.
- Watch both sides. Observe target-side telemetry and generator-side CPU, memory, network, file descriptors and ephemeral-port use. Mark the start and end of every step.
- Stop on the first failed objective. Trigger the predefined abort condition if latency, errors, availability or a safety ceiling crosses its threshold. Do not continue merely to obtain a larger number.
- Record the boundary. The last passing step and the first failing step form an evidence-based interval. The practical operating limit is below the failure point, with headroom for bursts and measurement uncertainty.
DigitalOcean describes a related staged approach: monitor resources, find the maximum response rate, then identify the maximum throughput at which latency becomes unacceptable. The exact boundary depends on your application and stated criteria.

Breakpoint test
A breakpoint test deliberately continues the ramp until an acceptance criterion fails. It tells you where the system stops meeting its contract, not where the operating point should be. Keep the final passing rate, failing rate, duration at each step and the first metric that crossed its limit.
Soak test
After choosing a sustainable rate, hold it for an extended period. A 30-minute run is useful for a documented example, but the duration should reflect the risk of your service; longer runs reveal memory leaks, unbounded queues, connection leaks, log growth, storage exhaustion and gradual degradation. Compare the beginning and end of the run rather than looking only at a single peak.

If latency rises while request rate stays constant, inspect queue depth, garbage collection, database locks, disk space and worker counts. A stable CPU graph does not rule out a leak or an exhausted connection pool.
Choose a load-generation model and tool
Two common choices are Grafana k6 and Apache JMeter. Select the model that matches the question you are asking, then verify that the generator itself has spare capacity.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
| Comparison point | Grafana k6 | Apache JMeter |
|---|---|---|
| Workload model | Virtual-user scenarios and request-rate models; useful for concurrent journeys or a controlled requests-per-second target | Scripted test plans built from samplers, controllers, timers and assertions |
| Protocol and browser coverage | HTTP and other supported protocols, with browser testing available for selected workflows | Broad protocol components and scripted plans; browser automation requires additional setup and is heavier |
| Automation | Script-driven execution suited to command-line and continuous testing | CLI execution is recommended for real load tests rather than the GUI |
| Distributed execution | Local, Kubernetes and hosted execution options | Controller/worker distributed testing and self-managed execution |
| Result metrics | Requests, failed requests, duration percentiles, iterations and VU activity | Sample results, response times, throughput, errors and assertion outcomes |
| Data parameterization | Scripted data and scenario logic | CSV and other test-plan data sources with controllers and variables |
| Operations | Lightweight local runs or hosted execution, depending on the setup | Self-managed Java-based runners and distributed workers |
Run k6 from the command line
A basic local run uses k6 run script.js. Use a request-rate scenario when you need to answer “Can the service sustain 120 requests per second?” Use a virtual-user scenario when you need to represent concurrent user journeys with pacing and varied steps. For a multi-request page, report both iterations and the total HTTP requests generated.
k6 documentation describes breakpoint tests for finding a breaking point and soak tests for exposing degradation over time. Its guidance also emphasizes starting simply, testing frequently and expanding the suite iteratively.
Run JMeter without the GUI
A non-GUI run can be started with jmeter -n -t test.jmx -l results.jtl, provided JMeter is installed and the test plan path is correct. The Apache guide recommends matching JMeter and Java versions and using CLI mode for real tests. Use the GUI to build or inspect a plan, not as the high-load generator.
Verify that the generator is not the bottleneck
A load generator can run out of CPU, memory, network bandwidth, file descriptors or ephemeral ports before the VPS reaches its limit. DigitalOcean warns that generator resources and the network between generator and target can skew results.

Grafana reports that a single k6 instance can run roughly 30,000–40,000 virtual users depending on hardware and, in some cases, up to 300,000 requests per second. Those are observations about generator capacity, not guarantees for any VPS. At high rates, use non-GUI execution, multiple generators or hosted execution, and compare generator-side telemetry with target-side telemetry. Increase load only when every generator remains comfortably below its own limits.
When geography matters, repeat the test from a location representative of your users. Round-trip latency, routing and provider peering can change connection behavior and percentile results. For a distributed test, keep the script revision, data mix, pacing and thresholds identical across generators.
Monitor the complete system
| Layer | Metrics to collect | Typical warning pattern |
|---|---|---|
| Load tool | Requested and achieved rate, active VUs or connections, iterations, failed requests, status codes and duration percentiles | Achieved rate falls below the target or generator errors rise |
| Operating system | CPU by process, load average, memory, swap, file descriptors, context switches and process counts | Swap, run-queue growth or descriptor exhaustion appears before CPU is fully used |
| Web and application tier | Worker/thread utilization, queue time, connection pools, garbage collection and application exceptions | Requests wait in an internal queue or workers remain busy while upstream traffic is steady |
| Database | Connections, query latency, locks, slow queries, cache hit rate and transaction errors | Connection exhaustion, lock waits or rising query time drives p99 latency |
| Storage | Read/write IOPS, latency, throughput, free space and filesystem errors | Persistent I/O wait or a filling volume causes gradual degradation |
| Queues and workers | Queue depth, oldest item age, worker utilization and retry count | Backlog grows faster than workers can drain it |
| Network | Ingress/egress throughput, packet loss, retransmits, connection failures and TLS handshake time | Bandwidth or connection limits are reached before application CPU |
Provider monitoring APIs can supply host-level CPU, memory, load, bandwidth and HTTP measurements; DigitalOcean documents these measurements for its Droplets. Combine provider data with application and database instrumentation because host metrics alone cannot explain a slow query or a blocked queue.

Interpret common failure patterns
CPU reaches a ceiling first
Check which process consumes CPU and whether the workload is compute-heavy, compression-heavy or spending time in garbage collection. Reduce expensive work, cache safely, optimize code or add CPU capacity. Do not report the CPU ceiling as the visitor limit unless the latency and error objectives still pass at the chosen operating point.
Memory falls and swap rises
Look for oversized workers, cache growth, leaks and per-connection buffers. Swap activity usually increases latency. Capture a heap or process profile, reduce concurrency per worker and retest after correcting the cause.
Database latency rises while application CPU is moderate
Inspect query plans, indexes, locks, connection-pool limits and cache misses. A database bottleneck means adding application workers may make the result worse by creating more contention.

Queue depth grows continuously
The system is accepting work faster than it completes it. Measure service time and worker utilization, then lower the sustainable rate or increase worker capacity. A queue that never returns to baseline fails a soak test even if front-end requests remain successful.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteGenerator metrics fail first
Reduce per-generator load, run in CLI mode, add generators or move generation to a suitable hosted environment. Repeat the test only after confirming that the target received the intended rate.
Errors appear only with cold cache or authenticated data
Separate warm-cache, cold-cache, anonymous and authenticated results. The most demanding realistic case—not the most favorable case—should determine the published operating envelope for that traffic class.
Run safely
- Test only infrastructure you own or have explicit permission to test.
- Prefer staging or a controlled production window. DigitalOcean warns that aggressive testing can harm production performance.
- Ramp in small increments and configure an automatic stop condition.
- Exclude external services unless you control or are authorized to load them.
- Protect real users and data with test accounts, isolated records and a rollback plan.
- Watch alerts, logs and support channels during the run, and stop immediately if customer impact appears.
A 2014 DigitalOcean tutorial used a 1 CPU / 512 MB VPS as an example environment. That is a historical test setup, not a benchmark or capacity promise for current VPS plans.

A useful statement looks like this: At 120 requests per second with the production mix, p95 latency stayed below 400 ms, errors stayed below 1 percent, CPU remained below 75 percent, and a 30-minute soak showed no degradation. This is an example of a reproducible envelope, not a universal target or a claim about every VPS.
Turn the result into an operating limit
Use the last passing step—not the first failing step—as the starting point for a production limit. Reserve headroom for traffic bursts, deployments, backups, cron jobs, cache misses and failures of redundant components. Re-run after changing the VPS size, region, application version, database schema, cache policy, TLS configuration or major traffic mix.
Maintain separate envelopes when the workload changes materially: anonymous versus authenticated traffic, warm versus cold cache, read-heavy versus write-heavy requests, and normal versus geographic test locations. A single “maximum visitors” number conceals these differences and invites unsafe planning.
