The safest workflow is layered: build against an isolated Google Ads test-account hierarchy with credentials that cannot reach production, exercise read-only requests first, use validate_only for mutate methods that support it, investigate individual calls with the REST tools, and review any deliberately executed write in Change History. Keep API correctness separate from campaign-performance testing; only Google Ads experiments can measure how a campaign change affects live delivery.
What pre-deployment testing can and cannot prove
Google Ads API testing answers several different questions. A read-only request can show that authentication, customer IDs, queries, pagination and response parsing work. A supported validate_only request can check whether a mutate request is structurally and semantically acceptable without applying it. An executed request in a test account can expose behavior that validation alone cannot. None of those checks proves that a production campaign will serve impressions, spend budget or improve conversions.
Google recommends test accounts for development and testing. Test accounts are isolated from production, do not serve ads and have no active billing. They are therefore suitable for many API and configuration checks, but they do not provide serving metrics and cannot reproduce every production-only feature.

Build a separate test manager and client account
- Follow Google’s test-account procedure to create a test manager account.
- Create one or more test client accounts beneath that test manager. Do not place them under your existing production manager account; Google treats the test hierarchy separately.
- Record each test customer ID, including the manager ID used as the login customer when your client library requires one.
- Use these IDs in local configuration and automated tests, and label them clearly so a test job cannot silently receive a production ID.
A test hierarchy is the first safety boundary: even a bug that sends an unintended mutation should not be able to alter a paying account when the request is authenticated only against test customers.

Know the test-account limits
- Test accounts never serve ads, so there are no impressions, clicks, spend or other serving metrics to inspect.
- They have no active billing and cannot interact with production accounts.
- Google identifies bid simulations, conversion uploads and billing-related behavior among the features that cannot be tested fully in test accounts.
- The documented hierarchy has an operational limit of 50 test accounts. Plan the structure before creating many short-lived clients.
- Google documents deletion of inactive test accounts after one year. Retain only accounts you still need and keep a record of the IDs used by automated tests.
These restrictions mean a green test-account run is evidence of API behavior, not evidence of delivery behavior. If your change depends on a serving metric or a production-only integration, mark that part as requiring a separately controlled production check.
2. Use credentials that cannot reach production
Create a test-only identity
Google’s testing guidance recommends maintaining credentials separate from those used by the production application. Create a dedicated test user or service account and grant it access only to the test manager and test clients. For OAuth user authentication, generate a refresh token while signed in as that test user.
The OAuth client ID and client secret can generally be reused: they identify the developer application, not the Ads accounts it can access. Account permissions attached to the authenticated user or service account determine which customers are reachable. Reusing the application credentials does not make a production account safe; the account authorization does.

Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Protect secrets and customer IDs
- Store client secrets, refresh tokens and service-account keys in your secret manager or protected environment variables.
- Never commit tokens or keys to source control, test fixtures or a public issue.
- Keep production and test configuration in separate deployment environments, with different customer-ID allowlists.
- Make a failing test job stop when its customer ID is not in the test allowlist rather than attempting the request anyway.
This separation limits the blast radius of a wrong endpoint, malformed mutation or accidentally run integration test. It also makes code review easier: reviewers can see that the test process is incapable of addressing a production customer.
3. Exercise read-only requests first
Start with retrieval and reporting
Read-only calls are the lowest-risk way to test authentication and request handling. Use them to verify that your client library can obtain an access token, address the intended customer, send a GAQL query, paginate or stream results, and deserialize the response your application expects. Report queries and campaign-setting retrieval are typical starting points.

- Authenticate with the test-only user or service account.
- Run a small query against a known test customer, selecting only the fields your code needs.
- Confirm the response shape, null handling, enum handling and error mapping.
- Exercise pagination or streaming with a result set large enough to cover your code path, while keeping the test account isolated.
- Record request IDs and normalized errors in test logs, but redact tokens and other secrets.
Read-only testing catches incorrect customer IDs, missing permissions, invalid GAQL, incompatible field names and parsing regressions before a mutation is introduced. It does not test mutation construction, policy checks that apply only to writes or rollback behavior.
4. Validate supported mutations without executing them
What validate_only does
For methods that expose the optional validate_only field, set it to true while developing the request:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →{
"validate_only": true,
"operations": [
{ "...": "your mutate operation" }
]
}
Google describes the behavior this way: “When this field is set to true, the request is validated, but not executed, allowing you to check for errors without changing any data.” A validation response can reveal malformed resource names, missing required fields, invalid combinations and some policy violations. It does not create the object, consume budget or prove that a later live request will serve.
Check method support before relying on it
Validation is method-specific, not a universal switch. Consult the reference page for the exact method and API version before adding it to a test. In particular:
GoogleAdsService.SearchStreamdoes not supportvalidate_only; it is a read operation and should be tested as such.- Starting in API version v25, Performance Max campaign generation for Smart campaigns rejects
validate_only. A request that worked against another mutate flow must not be assumed to work for this one.
A successful validation does not create the resource, return serving data or guarantee that a subsequent execution will have the same result. Between validation and execution, permissions, policy state, resource availability or API behavior can change. Treat validation as a preflight check, not as a transaction reservation.

Test both valid and intentionally invalid requests
- Keep a minimal valid fixture that exercises the fields your application actually sets.
- Add negative cases for missing required values, incompatible field combinations and invalid resource names.
- Assert the error category and the operation or field associated with it, not just that an exception occurred.
- Verify that a
validate_onlyrun leaves the test account unchanged by retrieving the relevant resource afterward.
That last check protects against a client wrapper that silently drops the flag or calls a different method than the one you intended to validate.
5. Use the REST interface for one-off investigation
When you need to inspect one request rather than build an application integration, Google’s REST interface and reference “Try it!” tools are useful for endpoint checks and debugging. They require a developer token, a customer ID and OAuth access to the account.
Good REST use cases
- Confirming the exact JSON representation of a resource or field.
- Reproducing a single failing request while comparing headers, URL and body.
- Checking whether an endpoint accepts a field before changing application code.
- Inspecting an error response independently of your client-library abstraction.
REST is a diagnostic path, not a reason to replace the application’s normal integration. Google recommends official client libraries for application development because they handle generated types, authentication patterns and API-specific conventions for you. Keep the same test customer and test credentials when using REST, and avoid pasting production tokens into an interactive tool.
6. If you execute a write, review exactly what changed
Some behavior cannot be demonstrated by validation. If you must execute a mutation, run it against a test customer first and capture the request, response and resulting resource. Then review the account’s Change History in the Google Ads UI, as described in Google’s next-steps guidance.
Change History is an audit check after execution; it is not part of validate_only. A validation request skips execution and therefore should not produce a change-history entry. Keeping those two paths separate prevents a team from mistaking a successful preflight for an applied change.

Production-sensitive execution rules
- Require an explicit approval to use any non-test customer ID.
- Use a production identity with only the permissions needed for the approved operation.
- Prefer the smallest possible change and verify the target resource immediately afterward.
- Inspect Change History and application logs before considering the deployment check complete.
Google recommends separate test credentials specifically “to minimize the risk of accidentally modifying production accounts when trying to modify development accounts.”
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.7. Check API-version compatibility before rollout
Understand major and minor versions
Google’s versioning documentation distinguishes major and minor releases. Major versions can contain backward-incompatible changes and use separate endpoint paths. Minor versions are backward-compatible and update the major endpoint in place. A client that compiles against one major version should not be assumed to work unchanged against the next.
Before deploying a version change, run your read-only, validation and (where necessary) test-account execution suites against the target version. Include generated client-library updates, renamed or removed fields, changed enum values and error handling in the review.
Track releases and sunsets
Google’s update guidance says the API typically has three major releases and three major release sunsets per year, and that only the three latest major releases are actively maintained. This is a published typical cadence, not a guarantee; verify the current schedule before planning work.
Read the release notes, upgrade guides and deprecation notices as part of every dependency upgrade. For example, release material surfaced API v25.2 on 2026-09-23; the date identifies that release note, not a promise that v25.2 is current when you deploy. Pin the version you tested, record the release date in your change ticket and set a reminder to recheck sunset dates.

8. Separate API correctness from campaign performance
If the hypothesis concerns campaign structure, keywords, bidding or another marketing outcome, API tests are the wrong measurement. Google Ads experiments can split traffic between a control group and a treatment group and compare performance; see the Experiments overview.
An experiment answers, “Did this campaign change improve the selected outcome under a controlled traffic split?” API validation answers, “Is this request acceptable, and does the code handle the response?” Run the software checks before creating the experiment, then analyze the experiment separately. A test account cannot substitute for an experiment because it does not serve ads or produce serving metrics.
Choose the right test for the question
| Method | Best for | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Test-account hierarchy | Safe development and many configuration/API tests | No serving metrics; billing, conversion uploads, bid simulations and other features are unavailable or incomplete |
| Read-only request | Authentication, query behavior, response handling and reporting | Does not exercise mutation logic |
validate_only |
Checking supported mutate-request structure and validation without applying it | Does not execute the change and is not supported by every method or flow |
| REST reference tools | One-off endpoint checks and debugging | Needs a developer token, customer access and OAuth authentication; client libraries remain the recommended application path |
| Controlled production-account test | Features unavailable in test accounts | Touches production and therefore requires explicit access control, minimal scope and post-change review |
| Google Ads experiment | Comparing campaign performance between control and treatment | Measures campaign outcomes, not request correctness |
A practical pre-deployment sequence
- Lock the target. Put test customer IDs in an allowlist and fail closed for any unknown ID.
- Authenticate safely. Use the test user or service account and a securely stored refresh token or key.
- Run retrieval tests. Verify token exchange, customer access, GAQL, pagination or streaming and response parsing.
- Run negative retrieval tests. Confirm that invalid queries and permission errors are classified correctly.
- Preflight mutations. Set
validate_only=trueonly on methods whose current reference documents that field. - Verify no side effects. Retrieve the relevant test resources and confirm that validation did not create or alter them.
- Execute only the approved test writes. Use the isolated hierarchy for behavior that validation cannot prove.
- Review Change History. Confirm that the executed test produced exactly the intended change.
- Check version status. Compare the target version with current release notes, upgrade guidance and sunset dates.
- Measure performance separately. If the change is a marketing hypothesis, design a Google Ads experiment rather than treating API test results as performance evidence.
Troubleshooting common failures
The request succeeds, but no campaign metrics appear
This is expected in a test account: it does not serve ads and has no serving metrics. Use the test account to verify resource and request behavior; use an approved experiment or other controlled production measurement for delivery outcomes.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
validate_only is rejected
Check the method reference and API version. GoogleAdsService.SearchStream does not support the field, and v25 Performance Max campaign generation for Smart campaigns rejects it. Remove the flag for read-only methods, or use the documented test-account execution path when a real mutation is required.
A validation passes, but execution later fails
Validation is not a reservation and does not execute the request. Recheck permissions, resource state, policy status and the exact version and payload used at execution time. Compare the executed response with the earlier validation log.
A test appears to be changing production
Stop the job, revoke or disable the test identity if necessary, and inspect customer IDs and login-customer configuration. Separate test credentials, environment-specific allowlists and Change History review are designed to catch this class of mistake before it becomes a deployment incident.
A version upgrade breaks previously working code
Determine whether the change crossed a major-version boundary, read the corresponding release notes and upgrade guide, and rerun the complete read-only and mutation-validation suite against the target version. Check the sunset schedule so the fix is not deployed onto a version nearing retirement.
