Delivery apps are difficult to test because a single order depends on several apps and services staying in sync while location, connectivity, device state, and timing keep changing. A courier action may need to update a backend, a route or ETA, the customer’s view, and a merchant or support view. The available evidence does not establish a delivery-app-specific dollar cost for QA or failures; general mobile-app survey estimates should not be presented as delivery-industry figures.

What makes a delivery workflow unusually difficult to test?

A basic screen check can show that an app launches and displays an order. It cannot prove that the right people see the right order state after a courier loses connectivity, a location update arrives late, or two events reach the backend in an unexpected order. Delivery testing has to cover connected workflows, not just isolated screens.

One order crosses multiple roles and systems

Depending on the service, a delivery may involve customer, merchant, and courier interfaces, along with backend services for order state, routing, estimated arrival times, payments, and support. A test should follow a meaningful action through the systems that depend on it. For example, verify that a courier’s delivery-status update is accepted, reaches the customer-facing status, and remains consistent in the relevant merchant or support view.

That end-to-end check is practitioner guidance, not a universal industry standard. The precise roles and services vary by app, so teams should map the actual workflow they support rather than assume every delivery product has the same architecture.

Location, connectivity, and app lifecycle change the result

Delivery workflows depend on information that can change while an order is active. Location may drift or update late; a network connection may disappear and return; and a phone may background or suspend an app. A test plan that assumes continuous connectivity, stable GPS, and a foreground app misses conditions that can alter status propagation or recovery.

These conditions should be treated as deliberate test inputs. Interrupt and restore connectivity, change or delay location updates, and background and resume the app while checking whether the workflow recovers without losing or duplicating operational events. These are practical coverage recommendations, not claims that every app will fail in those situations.

Which defect patterns are supported by published data?

Mobot’s 2026 report counted 6,372 unique defects across 83 apps in 11 industries during July 1, 2025–June 30, 2026. The company says those findings came from more than 145,000 automated test executions and 5.8 million QA actions. Five categories—broken navigation, missing or blank content, login or authentication failures, payment issues, and crashes—accounted for 57% of the findings. Mobot also reports that important findings sometimes appeared on only one tested platform.

Those figures describe a vendor-produced, multi-industry app sample; they do not isolate delivery apps or establish a representative defect rate for all mobile products. They do, however, illustrate why delivery teams should include platform-specific checks and exercise authentication, payment, navigation, content, and crash-recovery paths alongside delivery-state scenarios.

What does testing cost delivery-app teams?

No delivery-specific QA budget, failed-order cost, or savings attributable to a particular testing method is established by the available sources. It would be misleading to turn broad mobile-app survey estimates into a dollar figure for delivery companies. QA teams should distinguish the effort of building and maintaining coverage from business-impact estimates about poor quality or slow releases.

Published figure What it measures What it does not establish
90% of surveyed respondents estimated that poor mobile-app quality could cost their businesses up to $2.49 million in lost revenue per year, according to Tricentis’s 2024 survey release. Respondents’ estimates of possible annual business impact from poor mobile-app quality. Measured delivery-app losses, a delivery QA budget, or actual spending by QA teams.
75% of respondents said slow mobile-app release cycles cost their companies at least $100,000 per year; 13% placed the annual cost between $1 million and $10 million, according to Kobiton’s 2024 survey materials. Survey respondents’ estimates about the cost of slow mobile releases. Delivery-app-specific cost, independently measured losses, or the cost of any particular testing approach.

The figures are useful as general mobile-app context only. They concern respondents’ estimates, not measured delivery-sector expenditure. They cannot answer how much a delivery company should spend on QA or how much one missed status update costs.

How should a delivery-app test plan be built?

Start with the supported order lifecycle and the people or systems that depend on each state change. Then select scenarios that expose the ways those transitions can be interrupted. The aim is not to test every possible handset and condition on every change; it is to choose a representative, risk-informed set and verify the important state transitions and recovery paths.

Cover roles and state propagation

  • Exercise the customer, merchant, and courier roles that apply to the product.
  • For a meaningful action by one role, verify that the expected state reaches the other relevant views and backend services.
  • Check delayed, missing, or reordered events and confirm that the workflow does not silently settle into conflicting states.

Vary location, connectivity, and lifecycle

  • Test location changes, drift, and delayed updates, then check whether status and ETA information propagate as expected.
  • Interrupt and restore the network during an active workflow; verify recovery and check that retries do not duplicate or lose operational events.
  • Background and resume the app during a delivery step and confirm the user can recover the current state.

Include transactions and failure recovery

  • Exercise authentication and payment paths relevant to the order lifecycle.
  • Test navigation and content states, and check what users see after a crash or forced restart.
  • Use the common defect categories in Mobot’s multi-industry sample as prompts for coverage, not as proof that a specific delivery app has those defects.

How should teams choose devices and automation?

Decision area What to evaluate
Platform and hardware Whether the chosen coverage represents the target audience and supported iOS and Android versions; whether physical-device evidence complements simulator or emulator runs.
Field conditions Whether the setup can reproduce location changes, network interruptions, and app backgrounding relevant to the workflow.
End-to-end visibility Whether a test can verify state across the app and the backend services or other role-specific views that depend on it.
Automation operations How reproducible scenarios are, how quickly results arrive, how much real-device access is available, and how much maintenance the automation requires.

A representative physical-device matrix can reveal platform-specific issues that a simulator-only check may not surface; it does not mean every device must be tested on every code change. Choose devices and OS versions around the product’s supported audience and risk. Likewise, automation should be judged by the reliability and maintenance of the actual scenarios it supports, not by a general promise that a particular technique will work everywhere.

What the survey numbers can—and cannot—say about automation

In a March 2024 release, Tricentis’s Chief Product and Strategy Officer Mav Turner said: “To keep up, mobile development teams need to test apps and features quickly. Automation, powered by AI and low-code/no-code solutions meets this challenge, so teams can create and execute tests faster and ultimately deliver better value for the companies they work for and the end-users that they serve.” This is a vendor executive’s view. It is not independent evidence that automation produces those outcomes for every team, or that a particular approach reduces delivery-app costs.

For a delivery product, the practical test is whether the chosen approach reliably reproduces the workflows and interruptions the team needs to cover, makes failures visible across relevant systems, and can be maintained as the product changes. The cited material offers comparison dimensions, not a universal stack recommendation or a vendor ranking.
