Test a browser-using AI agent with screenshots as visual evidence, not as the only pass/fail signal. Run a repeatable task from a known starting state, capture the page after meaningful transitions, assert the resulting URL, text, accessibility structure, and application state, then compare screenshots in a pinned browser environment. Preserve the screenshots, actions, logs, and final judgment so a failure can be reproduced.

What automated screenshots can—and cannot—prove

A screenshot answers “What did the browser render at this moment?” It can show that a menu opened, a chart appeared, a confirmation screen was visible, or a layout regressed. It also gives a human reviewer or an independent judge concrete evidence of what the agent saw.

It does not reliably answer “Did the agent complete the user’s task?” A page can look plausible while the record was never saved, the wrong account was edited, or a hidden validation error prevented submission. Treat the screenshot as one observation in a test oracle that also checks functional state.

  • Visual evidence: capture the rendered page, a selected element, a canvas or chart, or the full document.
  • Functional evidence: assert expected text, URL, accessible roles and names, network/API state, or a database-visible result.
  • Diagnostic evidence: retain the agent’s commands, tool responses, console errors, and a trace showing the sequence of events.

Playwright’s screenshot documentation makes the same distinction: “Screenshots are for looking at, not for acting on — use browser_snapshot to get refs to interact with.” Use an accessibility or DOM snapshot to obtain interaction references and screenshots to inspect visual layout, canvas content, and bugs.

Define a task with an observable oracle

Start from a known state

Give every run the same initial URL, account or fixture data, feature flags, and authentication state. Reset the data between runs or create a unique test record that can be deleted afterward. Record the application commit or release, because a changed UI can otherwise be mistaken for an agent improvement or regression.

Write the journey and the result separately

A useful task specification has four parts:

  1. Start instructions: how to launch the application, the URL, credentials or seeded state, and any permissions the agent needs.
  2. User journey: the goal in ordinary language, including the pages, controls, and decisions the agent must discover.
  3. Expected result: the exact saved values, confirmation text, URL, notification, or backend state that must exist at the end.
  4. Edge cases and viewports: invalid input, an empty list, a slow response, a narrow mobile viewport, or any other condition that matters to the product.

Microsoft’s browser-tool guidance recommends supplying the start instructions and URL, journey, expected result, edge cases or viewport sizes, and the checks to repeat after a fix. This turns an open-ended demonstration into a reproducible test.

Choose assertions before capturing pixels

For each task, write at least one deterministic assertion that would fail if the agent did not complete the job. Examples include:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • The URL matches the expected route after submission.
  • A success message contains the exact order or record identifier.
  • A form’s accessible values contain the values the user requested.
  • A list reloads and contains the newly saved record.
  • An API response or test database contains the expected state.

Add a screenshot at the same checkpoint to show how that state looked. If the functional assertion passes but the screenshot changes, investigate a visual regression. If the screenshot looks correct but the state assertion fails, the agent probably reached a convincing intermediate screen without completing the operation.

Capture screenshots at meaningful checkpoints

Use a checkpoint plan, not one final image

Capture after transitions that answer a diagnostic question:

  • After navigation: did the agent reach the intended page?
  • After opening a menu or dialog: did the control expose the expected options?
  • After filling a form: are values, validation messages, and focus states correct?
  • After submission: did the visible confirmation appear?
  • At the final state: does the saved result and surrounding layout match the baseline?

Step-level captures make it possible to locate the first divergence. Capturing every animation frame, however, creates noise and unnecessary storage. Wait for a stable condition such as a selector becoming visible, a known response completing, or the interface reaching network idle before taking the checkpoint.

Capture the right scope

  • Viewport screenshot: best for what a user currently sees and for responsive layouts.
  • Full-page screenshot: useful for long documents, but sensitive to lazy loading and page height changes.
  • Element screenshot: isolates a component such as a confirmation card or chart and reduces unrelated diff noise.
  • Transparent or masked capture: useful when a background or a changing value should not determine the visual result.

Make sure lazy images have loaded before a full-page capture. If the agent must interpret a canvas or chart, retain the screenshot even when a DOM assertion cannot describe the pixels.

Build a repeatable Playwright harness

Install and pin the runner

npm install --save-dev @playwright/test
npx playwright install chromium

Pin the Playwright package and browser binaries in your lockfile and continuous-integration image. Run the baseline and comparison on the same operating-system image, browser channel, viewport, device scale factor, color scheme, and headless setting. A different font, GPU path, power setting, or browser version can change pixels even when the application is correct.

A runnable test with an agent-shaped action block

The following test is executable as written against a local demo application. The action function stands in for your agent runner; in an agent evaluation, replace its deterministic clicks with the agent’s browser-tool calls while leaving the checkpoint captures and assertions in place.

import { test, expect, Page } from '@playwright/test';

async function runTask(page: Page) {
  await page.getByRole('link', { name: 'New record' }).click();
  await page.getByLabel('Name').fill('Ada Lovelace');
  await page.getByLabel('Email').fill('ada@example.test');
  await page.getByRole('button', { name: 'Save' }).click();
}

test('agent creates a record', async ({ page }) => {
  await page.goto(process.env.APP_URL ?? 'http://localhost:3000');

  await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot('01-start.png', {
    animations: 'disabled'
  });

  await runTask(page);

  await expect(page.getByRole('status')).toContainText('Record saved');
  await expect(page).toHaveURL(//records/d+$/);
  await expect(page.getByRole('heading', { name: 'Ada Lovelace' })).toBeVisible();

  await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot('02-final.png', {
    animations: 'disabled',
    maxDiffPixels: 100,
    threshold: 0.2
  });
});

Run it with npx playwright test. On the first run, Playwright Test creates reference images. Later runs compare the current rendering with those checked-in baselines. The visual-comparison documentation notes that the runner takes screenshots until two consecutive screenshots match before saving the baseline, which helps avoid capturing an animation in motion.

Capture a selected element and a full page

await page.locator('[data-testid="receipt"]').screenshot({
  path: 'artifacts/receipt.png',
  animations: 'disabled'
});

await page.screenshot({
  path: 'artifacts/full-page.png',
  fullPage: true,
  animations: 'disabled'
});

Use a stable test identifier or an accessible locator for the element. Avoid brittle selectors based on generated class names. Keep the page screenshot and the element screenshot when each answers a different debugging question.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Record a trace for failed runs

import { test } from '@playwright/test';

test.beforeEach(async ({ context }) => {
  await context.tracing.start({ screenshots: true, snapshots: true });
});

test.afterEach(async ({ context }, testInfo) => {
  if (testInfo.status !== testInfo.expectedStatus) {
    await context.tracing.stop({
      path: testInfo.outputPath('trace.zip')
    });
  } else {
    await context.tracing.stop();
  }
});

Open a retained trace with npx playwright show-trace path/to/trace.zip. Keep the trace, screenshots, action sequence, console output, and judgment together under the run identifier.

Make visual comparisons meaningful

Keep the rendering environment stable

Playwright warns that rendering varies with host operating system, browser version, browser settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode. Generate and consume baselines in the same environment. If you support several platforms, maintain a baseline set per browser and platform rather than mixing them.

Set the viewport and device scale factor explicitly. Fix the timezone, locale, color scheme, reduced-motion preference, and geolocation when they affect the page. Freeze or mask clocks, random identifiers, rotating banners, ads, avatars, and live data. Disable animations where possible and wait for the application’s own “ready” condition instead of relying on an arbitrary sleep.

Use tolerances deliberately

maxDiffPixels allows a fixed number of differing pixels; threshold controls the per-pixel color distance. Start with narrow values and increase them only for a documented rendering variation. A generous tolerance can hide a broken button or shifted form. A zero-difference policy can produce false failures from font antialiasing or a harmless timestamp.

Approve a baseline change as a code review

When a diff appears, inspect the expected image, actual image, and diff image. Decide whether the application change was intentional. Update the baseline only after the functional assertions pass and a reviewer understands the visual change. Never regenerate all baselines automatically after a browser upgrade without reviewing the resulting diffs.

Compare agents fairly

Hold the task set, model, system prompt, harness, browser tool, environment, viewport, and stopping rules constant whenever you compare agent configurations. Change one factor at a time. Give every agent the same initial data and the same allowed tools. Pin versions and record the run date.

The WebdriverIO Browser Agent Benchmark follows this principle by changing only the browser tool while holding the model, harness, and prompt constant. Its independent judge receives the task, agent commands, and screenshots taken after every step, but not a tool’s own output. It uses a fixed random sample of 100 Online-Mind2Web tasks drawn from a 300-task set covering 136 live websites.

Report quality and efficiency together

For each run, report:

Measure What to record
Task success Pass/fail from a deterministic oracle or an independently specified judge, with the task version.
Visual result Baseline pass, reviewed diff, or a classified visual failure at each checkpoint.
Efficiency Median cost, tokens, wall-clock time, and browser-tool calls per task.
Reproducibility Model, prompt, harness, browser and OS versions, viewport, task seed, and run date.
Diagnosis Step screenshots, commands, tool responses, console errors, trace, and final judgment.

Use medians as well as distributions. A single unusually long task can dominate an average, while a high success rate with very high tool-call counts may not be practical.

Do not merge scores from unlike benchmarks

A benchmark score belongs to its exact tasks, agent, browser tool, judge, and date. OpenAI’s 2025 Computer-Using Agent page reports 38.1% on OSWorld, 58.1% on WebArena, and 87.0% on WebVoyager. The page also explains that the benchmarks differ and that WebVoyager’s tasks are mostly simpler than WebArena’s. These are vendor-published results, not universal performance estimates for a new harness.

Other published sets have different selection rules: Browser Use’s BU Bench V1 contains 100 hand-selected tasks, while the WebdriverIO sample contains 100 tasks drawn from its larger Online-Mind2Web collection. Publish the task definitions and scoring procedure with your own result instead of presenting any of these percentages as directly comparable.

Protect evidence and test data

Screenshots and traces can contain personal information, credentials displayed in a page, private task text, ground truth, model output, and sensitive records. The Browser Use repository warns that local traces can include decrypted task text, ground truth, model outputs, and screenshots. Store artifacts in access-controlled CI storage, redact or mask secrets before sharing, set retention limits, and do not commit raw traces to a public repository.

Performance, reliability, and cost considerations

Control capture overhead

Full-page images and traces consume more time and storage than a small element capture. Capture the checkpoints needed to locate a failure, then retain a full trace only for failed or sampled runs. Keep image dimensions and formats consistent so storage and diff behavior are predictable.

Separate product failures from environment failures

Classify a failed run before counting it against the agent. A bot check, unavailable test dependency, timeout, crashed browser, or blank page is different from an incorrect click. Record the page verdict, console errors, network failures, and the last successful checkpoint. Retry infrastructure failures under a bounded policy; never retry an agent mistake until it passes and then report only the successful attempt.

Use deterministic waits

Prefer a selector, response, URL, or application state as the wait condition. A fixed delay can be too short on a slow runner and wasteful on a fast one. For network-idle waits, ensure the application does not maintain a permanent connection that prevents the condition from completing.

Troubleshoot common failures

Symptom Likely cause Fix
Every pixel differs after a runner change Different OS, browser build, fonts, scale factor, or headless mode. Run baseline and comparison in the same pinned image; create separate platform baselines when required.
Flakes show a spinner, cursor, or half-loaded image Capture occurred during animation or before the ready state. Disable animations, wait for a stable selector or response, and ensure lazy images are loaded.
Visual test passes but the task is wrong The page looked plausible while state or data was not saved. Add URL, accessible-value, confirmation, API, or database assertions.
Full-page diffs move after content is added Dynamic data or changed document height. Seed fixed data, mask volatile regions, and capture a stable element when full-page layout is not the subject.
Agent cannot find a control It relied on a screenshot instead of an interaction reference, or the control is outside the viewport. Provide an accessibility/DOM snapshot for interaction, scroll deliberately, and use screenshots for visual inspection.
Timeout or blank capture Dependency outage, navigation failure, bot check, or an application error. Save console and network diagnostics, classify the infrastructure failure, and retry only under a documented bounded policy.
Baseline update hides a regression All reference images were regenerated without review. Require functional assertions and human review of expected, actual, and diff images before approving each change.
Artifacts expose secrets Trace or screenshot contains credentials, task text, or production data. Use synthetic data, mask sensitive regions, restrict artifact access, and apply retention and deletion rules.

A publication-ready evaluation checklist

  • The task starts from a reset, documented state and has an exact expected result.
  • The agent, model, prompt, browser tool, harness, browser, OS, viewport, and versions are recorded.
  • Captures occur after meaningful transitions and include the final state.
  • Functional assertions cover URL, visible or accessible content, and saved application state.
  • Baselines were generated and compared in the same rendering environment.
  • Dynamic content, animation, fonts, locale, timezone, and responsive dimensions are controlled or intentionally tested.
  • Visual tolerances are narrow, documented, and reviewed with every baseline change.
  • Success, visual result, cost, tokens, time, tool calls, and failure categories are reported.
  • Screenshots, commands, logs, traces, and judgments are retained securely and redacted before sharing.

FAQ

Should a screenshot be the final pass/fail oracle?

No. Use it as visual evidence alongside deterministic assertions or an independently defined judge. A screenshot cannot confirm hidden application state on its own.

How many checkpoints should one task have?

Enough to identify the first meaningful divergence—usually navigation, a key interaction, submission, and the final state. Add checkpoints for risky branches and remove captures that do not help diagnose a failure.

Can I compare results from two public agent benchmarks?

Only after examining their task selection, agent and tool setup, judge, environment, and date. Headline percentages from different benchmark designs are not interchangeable.

What should be versioned with a baseline image?

Version the image with the test, application revision, browser and operating-system specification, viewport settings, and the decision that approved the visual result. Without that context, a future diff is difficult to interpret.
