Test each script as a separate command before wiring them together. Start by writing an input/output contract, run ShellCheck and shfmt, add repeatable Bats tests for stdout, stderr, exit status, and filesystem effects, then test the combined interface with isolated fixtures. This layered approach catches syntax and portability problems before they become integration failures, while preserving evidence that each script still behaves correctly after a dispatcher, shared configuration, and path handling are introduced.
What to verify before combining scripts
A collection of scripts can appear reliable when each file is run manually, yet fail as soon as one wrapper invokes another. The wrapper may change the working directory, lose an exit code, overwrite an environment variable, mix diagnostic text into standard output, or pass an empty argument differently from an omitted argument. Testing should therefore describe observable behavior, not merely whether Bash accepts the syntax.
For every script, record the following contract before writing tests:
- Inputs: positional arguments, options, standard input, configuration files, and environment variables.
- Successful output: exact or pattern-based stdout and any expected stderr diagnostics.
- Failure output: the message a user should see for malformed, missing, or inaccessible input.
- Exit status: the numeric status for success and each meaningful failure class.
- Side effects: files created, changed, or removed; permissions; and external commands invoked.
- Dependencies: required Bash features, operating-system utilities, locale assumptions, and minimum versions.
Use a small matrix of representative cases rather than one happy-path example. Include a valid input, an empty input, a nonexistent path, a path containing spaces, a malformed option, and a downstream command that fails. That matrix becomes the specification for both the standalone script and the eventual combined tool.

Layer 1: run static analysis with ShellCheck
What ShellCheck can and cannot prove
ShellCheck performs static analysis on Bash and other shell scripts. Its warnings cover beginner syntax mistakes, semantic problems, and subtle shell pitfalls such as unsafe quoting or suspicious conditionals. It can be run locally and included in a build or test suite.
Run it against every shell file, including helper files that are sourced:
shellcheck scripts/*.sh bin/my-tool
For a project with nested directories, let the shell expand a complete file list or invoke ShellCheck from the project’s file-discovery command. Keep the command deterministic so the same set of files is checked on a developer machine and in CI.
A clean ShellCheck report does not establish that a command prints the intended result, returns the intended status, or writes the right files. Treat static analysis as a defect filter that complements runtime tests, not as a replacement for them.
Turn warnings into a deliberate policy
Decide which ShellCheck findings are errors for your project. A warning about an unquoted expansion may become a real path-with-spaces failure; a warning about a Bash-only feature may indicate that the script’s shebang and promised shell version disagree. If a warning is intentionally suppressed, keep the suppression narrow and explain the reason beside it. Broadly disabling checks can hide regressions introduced during the merge.
Layer 2: format and lint test files consistently
Use shfmt for shell source
shfmt formats shell programs. Consistent formatting makes changes easier to review and reduces accidental differences when several scripts are merged. Run it in checking mode in CI and in rewrite mode when you intentionally apply formatting:
# Check formatting without changing files
shfmt -d scripts/*.sh bin/my-tool
# Rewrite files after reviewing the proposed style
shfmt -w scripts/*.sh bin/my-tool
Choose one style for indentation, spacing, and line wrapping, then keep it stable. Formatting is valuable because it exposes structural changes in a diff; it does not validate behavior.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Formatting Bats files
Bats test files can use the alternative Bash-compatible form function_name { # @test. ShellCheck 0.7 or later and shfmt 3.2.0 or later can lint and format that form when invoked with -ln bats:
shellcheck -ln bats test/*.bats
shfmt -ln bats -d test/*.bats
The standard @test syntax is custom to Bats rather than standard Bash syntax. Verify the installed ShellCheck and shfmt versions in the environment that runs your checks before making version-sensitive options part of CI.

Layer 3: test each script through its public interface
Why Bats is useful
Bats (Bash Automated Testing System) is a TAP-compliant testing framework for Bash 3.2 or above. It can also execute other Unix programs. Bats gives tests names, setup and teardown hooks, captured command output, exit-status assertions, and machine-readable TAP or JUnit-compatible reports.
Use Bats when you need a maintainable suite rather than a handful of ad-hoc invocations. A very small script can be tested with direct shell assertions, but those assertions still need to check status, output, and side effects explicitly.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
A minimal behavior test
Suppose bin/normalize-name accepts a name and prints a normalized value. A Bats test can invoke it exactly as a user would:
#!/usr/bin/env bats
@test "normalizes a name" {
run "$BATS_TEST_DIRNAME/../bin/normalize-name" "Ada Lovelace"
[ "$status" -eq 0 ]
[ "$output" = "ada-lovelace" ]
}
@test "rejects a missing argument" {
run "$BATS_TEST_DIRNAME/../bin/normalize-name"
[ "$status" -ne 0 ]
[[ "$output" == *"usage"* ]]
}
The run helper executes the command without immediately aborting the test. It captures the command’s status in $status and combined command output in $output, allowing the test to assert both success and failure. If your interface separates stdout and stderr, use the Bats facilities available in the installed version to assert each stream distinctly, or redirect them deliberately and document that choice.
Test output without making tests brittle
Assert exact output when it is part of the documented interface, such as a machine-readable line or a stable error code. For human-oriented diagnostics that may gain context, assert a stable substring or pattern while still checking the exit status. Do not ignore output entirely: a wrapper that accidentally prints a debug line can break a caller even when its status remains zero.
Isolate files, environment, and working directories
Create fixtures per test
File operations should run in a temporary directory created for the test. Make the fixture explicit so a test explains what it needs and cannot accidentally depend on a developer’s home directory or a previous test’s leftovers.
#!/usr/bin/env bats
setup() {
workdir="$BATS_TEST_TMPDIR/work"
mkdir -p "$workdir/input" "$workdir/output"
printf '%sn' 'alpha' 'beta' > "$workdir/input/items.txt"
}
teardown() {
rm -rf "$workdir"
}
@test "converts the fixture into an output file" {
run "$BATS_TEST_DIRNAME/../bin/convert"
--input "$workdir/input/items.txt"
--output "$workdir/output/result.txt"
[ "$status" -eq 0 ]
[ -f "$workdir/output/result.txt" ]
[ "$(cat "$workdir/output/result.txt")" = $'ALPHAnBETA' ]
}
Use the temporary-directory variable supplied by your Bats version or create a directory with a secure temporary-directory command. The important property is per-test ownership and cleanup, not a particular variable name.
Control the current directory
A script that works from its own directory may fail when called from elsewhere. In a setup hook, change to the fixture directory or invoke the command with an explicit path and working-directory arrangement. Then add a test that runs from a different directory; this catches relative-path assumptions before a combined tool exposes them.
Be cautious when sourcing files
Bats warns that code outside functions in a sourced file can execute before setup and interfere with Bats internals. Keep libraries declarative: define functions and variables, but avoid running commands at source time. Put executable initialization inside an explicit function that the test calls after setup has created its fixture.

Keep environment variables explicit
Set required variables inside the test or setup hook and unset them when they should be absent. Add separate cases for a missing variable, an empty variable, and a valid value when those states have different meanings. Never rely on an interactive shell profile to provide test configuration.

Success cases
At minimum, verify the normal input that represents the script’s primary job. Check the complete output contract, the zero exit status, and every expected side effect. If an output file is created, inspect its contents and, when relevant, its permissions and whether an existing file is replaced or preserved.
Input and option failures
Test missing arguments, unknown options, malformed values, empty files, and paths that do not exist. A useful failure test checks three things:
- the command returns a nonzero status;
- the diagnostic identifies the actionable problem without exposing secrets;
- no partial or misleading output file remains.
External-command failures
When a script calls another program, arrange a fixture in which that program fails or returns unexpected output. Confirm that the script propagates or translates the failure according to its contract. This is especially important before composition: a wrapper that only checks whether the child process launched can report success after the actual operation failed.
Signals, cleanup, and partial work
If a script creates temporary files or traps signals, test the cleanup behavior where practical. Interrupt handling is often platform-sensitive, so state which operating systems and shells the tool supports. At least verify that a normal failure does not leave a file that the next invocation mistakes for completed work.
Recommended Free Tools
Run the standalone suite and make failures actionable
Start serially
Run the complete Bats directory in its default serial mode while developing:
bats test
Bats exits with status 0 when all tests pass and 1 when any test fails. That status makes it suitable as a gate in a shell script or CI job. Keep the command’s output in the CI log and, when your CI system supports it, publish the TAP or JUnit-compatible report so a failed case can be located without rerunning the entire suite locally.
Use focused runs while editing
Run one test file or a filtered subset during development, then run the full suite before merging. A focused run shortens feedback time; it must not replace the complete run because shared assumptions and cleanup defects often appear only after several files execute.
Parallel execution is an optimization, not a default
Bats supports parallel execution with GNU parallel or a compatible replacement. Parallel order is not guaranteed. Shared files, fixed ports, mutable environment state, or dependencies on another test can therefore produce nondeterministic failures. Prove that tests are independent in serial mode first, then enable parallelism only after every test owns its fixtures and external resources.

Design the combined command as a new public interface
After the individual scripts pass, write integration tests for the dispatcher or wrapper. Do not assume that passing unit-like script tests proves the composition works. The combined command is a new interface with its own argument parsing, configuration, path, and error contracts.
Test the normal orchestration path
Invoke the wrapper exactly as a user will, using a temporary project directory and realistic input. Assert the final output, final exit status, and every expected filesystem effect. If the wrapper transforms one script’s output into the next script’s input, verify that boundary explicitly rather than checking only the final file.
Test dispatch and argument forwarding
Exercise each subcommand or mode. Include options placed before and after positional arguments if your parser permits both, paths containing spaces, and an invocation from outside the project directory. A common regression is forwarding an unquoted argument, which passes a path as multiple words only after scripts are combined.
Test shared configuration
Run with a complete configuration, a missing configuration, and an invalid value. Confirm that configuration is loaded once where intended and that a child script cannot silently replace a value needed by a later step. If the combined command allows command-line options to override configuration, test both precedence directions.

Force each child operation to fail and verify the wrapper’s promised behavior: immediate stop, continued processing with a recorded failure, or an aggregate nonzero status. Check that the wrapper does not print a success message or leave a completed marker after a child failure. The exact policy belongs in the contract; the test makes it durable.
Test repeated and partial runs
Run the combined command twice against the same fixture. Decide whether the second run is idempotent, replaces outputs, refuses to overwrite them, or resumes from a checkpoint, and test that decision. Add a case where the first step succeeds and the second fails, then run the command again to verify how partial state is handled.
A practical project layout
A predictable layout keeps source checks, behavior tests, and integration tests discoverable:

Keep immutable sample data under fixtures/ and create mutable copies in a per-test temporary directory. Invoke binaries by a path derived from the test file or project root instead of assuming the caller’s PATH. This makes local runs and CI behave alike.

- Verify the Bash, ShellCheck, shfmt, and Bats versions installed on the runner.
- Run ShellCheck against all shell source and Bats files using the syntax mode your tests require.
- Run shfmt in diff/check mode and reject unformatted changes.
- Run the standalone Bats tests serially.
- Run the combined-command integration tests.
- Publish TAP or JUnit-compatible test output when the CI service supports it.
Test the Bash and operating-system versions that the finished tool actually promises to support. Bats’ documented baseline is Bash 3.2 or newer; that baseline does not automatically cover every utility, filesystem behavior, or shell feature used by your scripts. If your tool requires a newer Bash or a specific Unix utility, state that requirement and test it directly.
Common failures and how to diagnose them
“It passes manually but fails in Bats”
Compare the environments first: current directory, PATH, locale, shell options, and variables. Then inspect quoting and fixture paths. Manual tests often run from a directory that happens to contain an expected file, while Bats starts with a clean environment and a different working directory.
A test passes alone but fails in the full suite
Look for leaked files, exported variables, changed directories, background processes, or assumptions about test order. Move all setup into the test’s setup hook, clean up in teardown, and replace fixed paths with per-test temporary directories. Never make one test depend on another test having run first.
The wrapper reports success after a child failure
Capture and assert the child status at the boundary. In Bash, review pipelines, command substitutions, and conditional lists because they can mask a nonzero status unless the script deliberately enables and handles appropriate error behavior. Add an integration test that forces the child to fail and checks the wrapper’s final status and output.
Parallel tests are flaky
Return to serial execution and identify shared mutable state: a fixed temporary filename, a common output directory, a port, or a global configuration file. Give each test unique resources, or keep the suite serial when the dependency cannot be removed. Unpredictable ordering is a design constraint, not a failure to retry often enough.
Formatting or linting fails only on CI
Print tool versions and invocation options in the job log. Version-sensitive Bats syntax support includes ShellCheck 0.7 or later and shfmt 3.2.0 or later for the alternative Bash-compatible test form with -ln bats. Pin or provision compatible versions rather than allowing developers and CI to use unrelated releases.
A repeatable pre-combination checklist
- Each script has a written contract for inputs, outputs, status codes, side effects, and dependencies.
- ShellCheck runs on every shell source file and test file.
- shfmt reports no unexpected formatting differences.
- Standalone tests cover normal input, invalid input, missing resources, and downstream failures.
- Tests assert exit status and relevant stdout/stderr, not just that a command ran.
- Every filesystem test uses an isolated temporary directory and cleans up.
- Tests do not depend on a caller’s working directory, profile, locale, or test order.
- The combined command is tested through its public invocation, including argument forwarding and shared configuration.
- Integration tests verify failure propagation, partial work, repeated runs, and final side effects.
- CI runs all layers and records machine-readable results.
- Parallel execution is enabled only after serial tests are deterministic and resource-independent.
- The tested Bash and operating-system matrix matches the versions the tool promises to support.
Choosing the right amount of testing
For one short, non-destructive script, direct invocations with explicit shell assertions may be sufficient. As soon as several scripts share configuration, write files, or must report failures consistently, Bats provides a clearer structure: named cases, reusable hooks, captured output, status checks, isolation conventions, and CI-friendly reports. Regardless of framework, preserve the same layers. Static analysis finds classes of defects that execution may miss; formatting keeps changes reviewable; behavior tests prove each command’s contract; integration tests prove the combined interface.
The goal is not to test Bash syntax repeatedly. It is to establish that every script remains predictable alone and that the dispatcher preserves those promises when it supplies real paths, configuration, and failure conditions.
