To test a LAN cable, use an Ethernet cable tester to check its wiremap for opens, shorts, crossed pairs, and split pairs. That verifies basic wiring only: it does not prove the cable meets Cat 5e, Cat 6, or other performance limits, or that it can support a particular network speed. For those questions, use qualification or certification equipment designed for the job.
Choose the test that answers your question
A loose patch cable, an installed cable run, a planned speed upgrade, and a standards-compliance handoff call for different levels of evidence. Start by deciding what you need to establish.
| Need | Appropriate test | What it can establish |
|---|---|---|
| Check a patch cable for common wiring faults | Basic wiremap or verification test | Whether conductors map as expected and, depending on the tester, whether there are opens, shorts, crossed or reversed pairs, or split pairs. NetAlly’s cable-testing overview describes these troubleshooting functions. |
| Troubleshoot an installed run | Verifier with length, fault-location, remote-ID, or tracing functions as needed | May help identify the run or estimate the length and distance to a fault. Capabilities and accuracy vary by model. Fluke Networks’ MicroScanner documentation describes specifications for that product family. |
| Check whether cabling supports a target application or speed | Qualification or performance test | Whether the link supports specified applications or performance targets. The functions are product-specific; for example, Fluke Networks documents LinkIQ performance testing up to 10GBASE-T. |
| Document compliance with cabling standards | Standards-compliant certification test | Whether the link meets the applicable performance limits when tested with the correct equipment and configuration. See Fluke Networks’ explanation of verification, qualification, and certification. |
These are distinct test categories, not interchangeable names for the same check. A tool’s results support conclusions only within its stated functions and limits.
How to check a cable’s wiremap
- Choose a tester compatible with the cable and connectors. Check the tool’s documentation for supported cable types, terminations, and any required accessories; product families differ.
- Connect the cable as the tester specifies. For a point-to-point wiremap, this commonly means connecting the tester at one end and its remote unit at the far end. Follow the specific manufacturer’s instructions and account for the cable configuration.
- Run the wiremap test. Compare the displayed conductor map with the expected wiring configuration. A fault indication such as open, short, crossed or reversed pair, or split pair means the wiring or cable needs further investigation.
- Use the result only for what was tested. A good wiremap means the tested conductors are mapped as expected. It does not demonstrate attenuation, crosstalk, return loss, or every other performance property required for a standards-based test. Common datacom measurements include length, wiremap, attenuation, NEXT, DC loop resistance, and return loss, as Fluke Networks explains.
The faults detected and the way they appear on screen depend on the tester. A wiremap pass is useful evidence about wiring, not a universal verdict that a cable is good for every network use.

What length and fault-location readings can tell you
Some testers estimate cable length or the distance to an open or short. On an installed run, those readings can help narrow down where to inspect. They are estimates whose range and accuracy depend on the particular tool and its assumptions, including the cable’s nominal velocity of propagation (NVP). Do not apply one model’s specifications to other testers: MicroScanner’s published figures apply to that product family.
If a reading seems inconsistent with the installation, consult the tester instructions and verify its configuration and assumptions before treating the displayed distance as an exact physical measurement.

When a wiremap pass is not enough
The network is still unreliable
A correct wiremap does not rule out performance problems in the cable, nor does it isolate every possible cause of network trouble. If the wiring checks out but the connection remains unreliable, use a performance or qualification test suited to the service you expect the link to carry. A tester’s supported applications and limits are model-specific; LinkIQ documentation, for example, describes that product’s frequency-based performance testing up to 10GBASE-T, not a capability of basic wiremap testers generally.
You need a speed or application qualification
Use qualification equipment when the question is whether a link supports a specified application or speed. A simple continuity check or wiremap cannot establish that on its own. Check the chosen tool’s documentation for the exact applications and cable types it supports.
Rank #3

You need a standards-compliance result
Use a suitable certification tester, the correct test configuration, and the applicable TIA or ISO limits when you need a compliance result or installation handoff record. A basic tester should not be described as certifying Cat 5e, Cat 6, or another category. Fluke Networks distinguishes certification from qualification and verification and identifies certification as the way to establish whether a link meets performance requirements.

Match the tester to the cable and job
- For a basic wiring fault check: Look for wiremap and detection of the faults you need to identify, such as opens, shorts, crossed or reversed pairs, or split pairs.
- For installed-run troubleshooting: Consider length, distance-to-fault estimates, remote identifiers, or tone and tracing functions if you need to find a particular cable.
- For a planned network upgrade: Choose a qualification or performance tool that explicitly supports the application or speed you intend to use.
- For standards-based documentation: Confirm the tool performs certification against the applicable limits and supports the required test configuration.
- For any test: Verify support for the cable type, termination, and connectors in the installation, and read the model-specific limits before relying on a result.
