The reliable way to test visual reasoning on websites is to treat the browser as a versioned experiment: run a pinned, resettable site; show screenshots at fixed checkpoints; constrain the action interface; record every observation and action; and score both what the model saw and whether the task ended in the correct state. A screenshot-only click test measures visual grounding. A multi-step browser task measures grounding, planning, interaction and recovery. Report those outcomes separately.
What a reproducible screenshot test must control
A model can receive the same URL and still see a different experiment. A changed website commit, browser build, font, viewport, cookie, network response or scroll position can alter pixels and therefore the model’s decision. Reproducibility starts by making those variables explicit.
Pin the environment
- Use a self-hosted website snapshot in a container or virtual machine. Record the image digest and website commit.
- Pin the browser version and rendering engine, viewport width and height, device-scale factor, installed fonts, locale and timezone.
- Fix the random seed and seed data. Apply a documented network policy so third-party responses cannot silently change a page.
- Reset to a clean database, cookie jar, local storage and scroll position before every trial. A reset endpoint or disposable VM/container snapshot is preferable to manually undoing actions.

State exactly what the model receives: screenshot only; screenshot plus OCR; or screenshot plus a DOM or accessibility tree. Keep the prompt, action schema, tool latency and maximum step count constant when comparing models. A result from screenshot-only input is not directly comparable with a result produced with DOM text.

Capture deterministic images
Capture the initial page and every post-action observation at a fixed format and resolution. PNG avoids lossy pixel changes; JPEG or WebP can be used when bandwidth matters, but keep the format and quality constant. Store the exact image bytes or a cryptographic content hash in the run record. Include the viewport and device-scale factor in metadata.
Build a versioned task manifest
Do not encode tasks only in a prompt spreadsheet. Give every case a machine-readable manifest entry that an evaluator can replay.

}The goal should describe the user outcome, not the route the model must take. The success predicate must be deterministic whenever possible: a URL route, database value, rendered status marker or API response that the harness can inspect. Keep a held-out task split for the final report; do not tune prompts against it.

Single-step grounding tasks
Ask the model to identify a button, menu item, price, image, field or spatial relationship in one screenshot, then return a coordinate, selector or answer. These tests isolate perception and grounding. Record the target box and the model’s selected point so you can measure distance and not merely mark the click as right or wrong.

Multi-step visual web tasks
Require navigation through a realistic site, such as comparing products, entering information or editing content, and finish at a checked state. VisualWebArena extends the approach to multimodal, visually grounded tasks and publishes scripts and trajectories intended for reproducible execution-based evaluation. Its project describes 910 benchmark tasks (2024). Treat that count as the project’s stated task inventory, not as a universal standard.
Controlled variants
- Screenshot-only versus screenshot plus DOM/accessibility data.
- Clean layout versus the same task with banners, dense content or distractors.
- Familiar site template versus a novel template with equivalent semantics.
- Short horizon versus long horizon, while keeping the user goal and action budget matched.
Run protocol: from reset to scored trace
- Check out the exact environment. Verify the container or VM digest, site commit, browser build, fonts, locale, timezone, viewport and device scale. Fail the run if any value differs from the manifest.
- Reset state. Create a fresh browser profile or restore a disposable snapshot. Clear cookies, local storage, service workers, database state and page scroll. Seed the task’s starting data.
- Load and settle. Navigate to the manifest URL. Wait for the same readiness condition on every trial, such as a selector plus network-idle timeout. Save the initial screenshot and page metadata.
- Send one observation at a time. Provide the screenshot and the fixed prompt. If the condition includes DOM or accessibility data, attach the same representation and ordering on every run.
- Validate each action. Accept only actions in the declared schema. Record coordinates in CSS pixels, selectors exactly as issued, keyboard events, browser result and latency. Reject malformed or out-of-bounds actions as invalid rather than silently repairing them.
- Capture the result. After every accepted or rejected action, save the resulting screenshot (or an explicit error observation), hash, URL, scroll position and state changes.
- Stop deterministically. End on the success predicate, a declared failure, the step limit or timeout. Do not allow an operator to rescue a run.
- Repeat. Run at least three trials per task when practical. Randomize equivalent task instances or seeds, but record the seed. Never carry cookies, database mutations or scroll position into the next trial.

}Also store the full prompt, model settings, tool version, browser console errors and evaluator version. Hashes make it possible to prove that a later analysis used the same pixels without forcing you to publish every image publicly.
Score perception and task completion separately
A model can point to the correct control and still fail because it chooses an invalid selector, loses state or times out. Conversely, a task may succeed after a lucky detour even though the initial grounding was wrong. Publish two layers of results.

For coordinate tasks, define the hit region before testing and report both exact-hit and distance-to-target. For answers, use a normalized rubric that handles formatting without allowing semantic drift. For execution, evaluate the deterministic predicate after the final action, not the model’s self-report.

Failure taxonomy
- Perception: the target, text or relationship was misread.
- Planning: the model selected an unsuitable sequence despite recognizing the page.
- Interaction: the action type, coordinate, selector or keyboard event was invalid.
- Tool/browser: navigation, rendering, network or automation failure.
- Evaluator: the predicate or reset procedure produced an incorrect label.
Report results by task family, site, horizon and input condition, with confidence intervals across tasks. A single aggregate percentage hides whether a model fails on menus, forms, long pages or a particular site template.
Make the benchmark comparable and publishable
Keep comparisons fair
Use identical task manifests, snapshots, prompts, action limits, tool latency and evaluator code for every model. When changing the observation condition, create a separate condition rather than mixing screenshots and DOM data in one score. Cross-paper leaderboard numbers are comparable only when task sets, snapshots, action limits, model settings and evaluators match; WebArena-Pro emphasizes the need for heterogeneous yet reproducible evaluation.
Release replay artifacts
Publish the environment identifier, task manifest, browser settings, scoring code, reset instructions and per-task traces. Include failed traces, not just successful examples. A researcher should be able to replay a failure, inspect the exact screenshot hash, and determine whether the cause was perception, planning or infrastructure.

Scores are harness-dependent. Browser version, rendering engine, viewport, fonts, network responses, reset quality, maximum steps and evaluator implementation can all change the result. Self-hosted sites improve repeatability but can underrepresent production drift. Live websites improve ecological validity while sacrificing determinism because content, experiments, consent dialogs and third-party services change.

Separate infrastructure failures from model failures
Track page-load timeout, blank render, crashed browser, missing asset and evaluator error as infrastructure outcomes. Do not count them as visual mistakes. Retry infrastructure failures only under a documented policy; otherwise retries can hide an unstable environment. Keep the original failed trace and mark the retry separately.
Control latency and rate
Set one timeout and one maximum-step budget per task family. Record model latency and browser/tool latency independently so a slow page is not mistaken for slow reasoning. Parallelize independent trials only when the site state is isolated; shared databases or rate limits can introduce leakage.

Hash every screenshot, retain full images for released or sampled traces, and keep metadata for every step. If storage is limited, use a retention rule defined before scoring rather than discarding inconvenient failures. Cost comparisons are meaningful only when image format, resolution, number of checkpoints and retries are held constant.

Frequently Asked Questions
How many trials should a benchmark run?
Run at least three trials per task when practical, using recorded seeds or randomized equivalent instances. Increase repetitions when tasks are stochastic or confidence intervals remain wide.
Should screenshots include the browser’s address bar?
Usually no. Capture the fixed page viewport and document that choice. Including browser chrome tests a different interface and makes coordinate definitions harder to compare.
Can a model use OCR in a visual benchmark?
Yes, but label it as a separate observation condition. Screenshot-only, screenshot-plus-OCR and screenshot-plus-DOM results should not share one headline score.
