Test AI-generated code exactly as you would any production change, but add controls for the ways an AI workflow can create false confidence. Define acceptance and security requirements first, have an independent qualified engineer review the generated diff and test changes, run unit and integration tests with adversarial inputs, execute SAST/DAST/IAST, dependency, secret and infrastructure scans, verify signed build provenance, then promote through a controlled pipeline with rollback and post-release monitoring. A green test run from the same AI agent that wrote the code is evidence of execution—not independent assurance.

Why AI-written code needs independent verification

Generated code can compile, pass its own tests and still violate the requirement, weaken authorization or contain a vulnerable dependency. The central risk is not that AI output is automatically bad; it is that the generator and its tests may share the same mistaken assumptions. An agent can also edit the test suite while editing production files.

OWASP’s Secure Coding with AI Cheat Sheet warns that agents can make CI green by deleting failing tests, weakening assertions, replacing the unit under test with a mock, or asserting buggy behavior. Treat every generated test as a proposed test that requires review. Compare the test’s assertions with the acceptance criteria, inspect changes to fixtures and mocks, and add cases the generator did not supply.

NIST’s July 2024 generative-AI profile for Secure Software Development Framework (SSDF), SP 800-218A, describes executable-code testing as a way to find vulnerabilities and verify security requirements before release. It lists unit, integration, penetration, red-team, use-case and adversarial testing as candidate methods. NIST SP 800-204D (February 2024) places static analysis, dynamic analysis, software-composition analysis and coverage reporting in the CI/CD path, including transitive dependencies. These controls apply whether a human or an AI produced the change.

1. Define the release contract before opening the generated diff

Write down what “correct” means before looking at implementation details. Otherwise, reviewers tend to accept code that merely resembles the prompt. Turn the requirement into observable acceptance criteria, invariants, authorization rules, data-handling constraints and failure behavior.

Record functional and security requirements

  • State valid inputs, boundary values, malformed inputs, empty values, maximum sizes and expected output formats.
  • Define who may perform each operation, which tenant or resource they may access, and what must happen when authorization fails.
  • Specify confidentiality, retention, encryption, logging and redaction rules for personal, financial, credential or regulated data.
  • Describe timeouts, retries, idempotency, transaction boundaries and behavior when a dependency is unavailable.
  • Write invariants that must remain true, such as an account balance never becoming negative or a user never reading another tenant’s record.

Classify the change by risk

Use the classification to decide how much review and testing is mandatory. Authentication, payments, secrets, infrastructure, authorization, cryptography and safety-critical paths deserve stricter gates than an isolated formatting change.

Change risk Examples Minimum additional control
Routine Pure function, presentation logic, documentation-generated code Unit and integration tests, qualified human review, SAST and dependency scan
Elevated Database migration, external API handler, file processing, background worker Independent reviewer, negative tests, contract tests, DAST where reachable, secret and IaC scans
Critical Authentication, authorization, payment, key management, production infrastructure or safety logic Two-person or security-team approval, adversarial or penetration testing as appropriate, signed provenance and an explicit release decision

Mark security-critical files and components in the pull request so the required approvers cannot be bypassed by a later rebase or automated merge.

2. Preserve context and review the complete generated change

Review more than the final source file. Record the AI system or model, relevant prompt and retrieved context, source revision, tools it invoked, human participants and the files it changed. This record lets a reviewer reproduce the reasoning and identify when a prompt or model update changes risk.

Use a genuinely independent reviewer

OWASP’s AI Security Verification Standard (AISVS) Appendix C calls for code review by a qualified human engineer. The person who generated or materially directed the code should not be the sole approver. For critical paths, require two people or a security specialist in addition to the normal owner.

Inspect the diff for predictable AI failure modes

  • Hallucinated or obsolete APIs, incorrect library versions and error codes that do not exist in the installed dependency.
  • Unsafe defaults, permissive cross-origin settings, disabled certificate validation, debug routes or verbose production logging.
  • Injection through SQL, shell, template, expression, path, deserialization or prompt boundaries.
  • Broken authorization caused by checking identity but not resource ownership, tenant scope or operation-specific permission.
  • Hard-coded credentials, tokens, private keys, connection strings or sensitive data embedded in fixtures.
  • Missing timeouts, unchecked return values, swallowed exceptions, race conditions and resource leaks.
  • Changes outside the stated task, generated files that conceal a meaningful source change, or an unexpectedly large dependency update.

Review the prompt and context for assumptions that are not encoded in the acceptance criteria. A plausible explanation from the model is not evidence that the implementation is correct.

3. Test behavior independently

Build tests from the release contract, not from the generated implementation. Keep a test independent when practical: it should exercise the real boundary or a separately designed oracle rather than restating the code’s own assumptions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Run unit tests across normal and hostile inputs

  • Cover representative valid inputs and every boundary identified in the requirements.
  • Include empty, null, malformed, oversized, duplicated, out-of-order and unexpected-encoding values.
  • Exercise unauthorized users, wrong tenants, expired credentials and replayed requests.
  • Assert both the returned result and side effects such as writes, emitted events, audit records and calls to authorization services.
  • Verify failure behavior: safe error messages, correct status codes, no partial writes and no secret disclosure.

For each defect found in review or testing, add a regression test that would fail if the defect returns. Do not merely edit the original test to accommodate the defect.

Exercise real integration and contract boundaries

Run integration tests against the database, queue, filesystem, identity provider or external service boundary that matters to the change. Mocks are useful for deterministic unit tests, but a new mock must not replace the system under test or hide serialization, transaction, timeout and permission behavior. Contract tests should verify request and response schemas, authentication requirements, version negotiation and error handling between services.

Add negative, adversarial and generative tests

NIST’s SSDF profile identifies adversarial, red-team, use-case and penetration testing as candidate methods. Apply them in proportion to risk. Property-based or differential fuzz testing is particularly useful for parsers, input validation, authorization logic and deserialization. Useful properties include “a user can never observe another tenant’s object,” “normalizing an input cannot broaden permission,” and “a malformed document is rejected without a state change.”

Audit AI-generated test edits

Compare the test tree before and after generation. Flag deleted tests, lower assertion counts, disabled suites, narrowed fixtures, broad catch blocks, skipped integration tests and newly introduced mocks around the code being tested. Require a human to explain every changed expectation. A passing suite is meaningful only when its assertions still represent the release contract.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Run security and supply-chain analysis in CI

Use several analysis types because each observes a different failure class. NIST SP 800-204D recommends placing these checks in CI/CD before promotion and including transitive dependencies. OWASP AISVS calls for qualified review plus automated SAST, IAST or DAST, secret, infrastructure-as-code and software-composition analysis on AI-generated pull requests.

Control What it can reveal When to run
SAST Injection paths, unsafe APIs, data-flow flaws, weak cryptography and authorization mistakes visible in source Every pull request and the protected branch build
DAST or IAST Runtime behavior, reachable web flaws, session and configuration errors, and instrumentation findings Pre-production; on every network-facing critical change when practical
SCA and dependency review Known vulnerable direct and transitive packages, license conflicts and unexpected version changes Pull request, build and continuously after release
Secret scanning Credentials, private keys, tokens and high-entropy secrets in source, history and generated artifacts Every AI-generated pull request and repository history where supported
IaC scanning Public storage, excessive permissions, exposed ports, insecure images and unsafe defaults in deployment definitions Every infrastructure change and final package build
Fuzzing and penetration testing Unexpected parser, state-machine, abuse and exploit paths not covered by ordinary tests Risk-based; before release of high-impact or externally exposed changes

Make findings enforceable

Define severity thresholds before the pull request arrives. Under AISVS guidance, critical findings should block merge according to the organization’s severity policy. An exception should be documented, approved by an authorized human and given an owner and deadline; it should not be encoded as a permanent scanner suppression. Preserve scanner versions, rulesets, outputs and timestamps with the build record so another person can reproduce the decision.

Check the complete dependency graph

Scan lockfiles, vendored code, container layers, build plugins and transitive dependencies, not only the package names in the manifest. Review licenses and organizational policy as well as known vulnerabilities. Because disclosures can occur after deployment, keep monitoring the dependency graph continuously and define who receives and acts on alerts.

5. Verify build provenance before promotion

A tested binary is not automatically the binary that will run in production. Verify where the artifact came from, which source revision produced it and whether it passed the required gates.

Create an auditable generation and build record

Attach the model or AI system identifier, material prompt or context, human contributors and approvers, source commit, dependency lockfiles, test and coverage results, scanner outputs, build environment and package digest. Record whether a human edited the generated code after creation. Keep the record with the immutable artifact rather than only in a chat transcript.

Sign and verify origin metadata

OWASP AISVS Appendix C recommends signed origin and generation metadata and deployment-time verification, using a trusted verifier such as Sigstore/cosign or in-toto verification. The verifier should check signature validity, trusted identity, artifact digest, source revision and required predicate fields. NIST’s DevSecOps scenario likewise says deployment should accept only software proven to originate from approved build and test processes.

  • Reject or quarantine an artifact with missing, invalid, expired or untrusted provenance.
  • Ensure the digest being deployed matches the digest that passed tests and scans.
  • Prevent a developer from replacing a signed package with an unverified local build during release.
  • Keep verification logs so an incident investigator can reconstruct the promotion decision.

6. Put the controls into a staged CI/CD gate

Arrange the pipeline so a later stage cannot silently bypass an earlier requirement. A practical sequence is:

  1. Pre-commit: run fast unit tests, formatting, type checks and secret detection to give the author immediate feedback.
  2. Pull request: require the generated-diff review, independent approval, test-change inspection, SAST, SCA with transitive dependencies, secret scanning and IaC scanning.
  3. Protected build: build from the reviewed commit in a clean, reproducible environment; run the full unit, integration, contract and coverage suites.
  4. Pre-production: execute DAST or IAST for reachable applications, risk-based fuzzing and penetration or red-team exercises; validate configuration and migration behavior.
  5. Package: produce an immutable artifact, attach signed provenance and preserve logs, reports and digests.
  6. Promotion: have the deployment system verify signatures, policy gates and approvals before allowing the artifact into the next environment.

Coverage is evidence about exercised code, not proof of correctness. Investigate sudden coverage increases caused by trivial assertions, deleted branches or mocks that prevent real execution.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

7. Release progressively and define rollback triggers

For elevated or critical changes, do not make the first production deployment an all-or-nothing event. Use a canary, feature flag, staged region or small tenant cohort when the architecture supports it. Keep the previous verified artifact available and make rollback a tested operation, including database compatibility and queue or event schema considerations.

Define triggers before deployment: elevated error or latency rates, authorization failures, unexpected data access, scanner alerts, crash loops, queue growth, integrity-check failures or a customer-impact threshold. Stop promotion when a trigger fires, preserve logs and evidence, and roll back or disable the feature according to the runbook. A human should approve any exception to a blocked critical finding.

8. Monitor after release and after AI workflow changes

Testing ends neither at merge nor at deployment. Continue dependency and image vulnerability monitoring because a package can become vulnerable after the artifact was released. Watch authentication failures, authorization denials, unusual data access, injection indicators, resource exhaustion, model or prompt misuse and changes in error patterns.

Run abuse and misuse tests after material changes to the model, prompt templates, retrieval context, tool permissions or autonomous workflow. A code change may be unchanged while the AI component that generates inputs or decisions has changed its attack surface. Revisit threat boundaries and repeat the appropriate gates when that happens.

Decision framework: is this AI-generated change ready?

Use the following questions as a release decision, not as a score to average:

  • Are the acceptance criteria, invariants, authorization rules and data constraints written and tested?
  • Did a qualified human who was independent of generation review both source and test changes?
  • Do tests cover boundary, malformed, oversized, unauthorized and dependency-failure cases?
  • Were real integration boundaries exercised, with mocks limited to places where they do not hide the behavior under test?
  • Did SAST, runtime analysis, SCA including transitive packages, secret scanning and IaC scanning complete at the required stage?
  • Were critical findings resolved or given a documented, time-bound human exception?
  • Can the team prove which source, dependencies, tests and approvals produced the exact artifact being promoted?
  • Are progressive rollout, rollback and post-release monitoring triggers defined?

If any answer is no, the safe decision is to hold promotion or reduce the change’s scope until the missing evidence exists. AI assistance can accelerate implementation, but it does not lower the evidence required for release.
