Test an AI-generated app as two systems at once: ordinary software that must meet its requirements, and an AI-assisted development or runtime system that can introduce distinctive privacy, authorization, and prompt-manipulation risks. Start with a written threat model, then independently test behavior, inspect the complete generated diff and dependencies, verify privacy boundaries and agent permissions, and run adversarial tests against any LLM or tool-using feature. A green test suite is evidence only for the cases it covers—not proof that the application is secure.
What are you actually testing?
“AI-generated app” can describe two different risk surfaces. An AI coding assistant may have produced the source, tests, configuration, and infrastructure files. Separately, the finished product may contain an LLM, retrieval system, autonomous agent, or model-powered API. Test both surfaces instead of assuming that a conventional application review covers AI behavior.
Ordinary application defects
Verify that the software does what its requirements say under normal and abnormal conditions. That includes business rules, authentication, authorization, data validation, persistence, error handling, concurrency, performance limits, and recovery. A defect in a generated function is still a normal software defect, regardless of who or what wrote it.
Application security
Check whether an attacker can cross a trust boundary, access another user’s data, execute unintended code, bypass authorization, exploit a dependency, or recover secrets from logs and storage. These checks apply whether the code was typed by a person or synthesized by a model.

LLM and agent-specific behavior
When the product uses an AI model, the integrated system includes the system prompt, user prompt, retrieved documents, tool descriptions, APIs, authorization checks, output handlers, and the model itself. A safe base model does not make an unsafe tool permission or retrieval query safe. Test the assembled system and its failure modes.
Are passing AI-generated tests enough?
No. Tests generated by the same agent that produced the implementation can share its blind spots. OWASP’s Secure Coding with AI guidance states: “A passing test suite generated by the same agent that produced the code provides no independent assurance.” A suite can pass while omitting authorization cases, deleting difficult tests, asserting the wrong requirement, or locking in a bug as the expected result.
NIST’s IR 8397 verification recommendations are a useful baseline, not a complete security program. NIST describes them as techniques that “are broadly applicable and form the minimum standards,” and explicitly says the document does not address the totality of software verification. Treat a pass percentage as evidence about exercised cases, then perform independent security and privacy review.
Stage 1: Define what the app is allowed to do
Write a compact threat model before running tools. It becomes the reference for test cases and for deciding whether a finding is a release blocker.
Inventory trust boundaries
- List user roles, service accounts, administrators, and unauthenticated entry points.
- Identify sensitive data such as credentials, personal information, financial records, health information, proprietary code, and tenant-specific content.
- Record external services, webhooks, model providers, retrieval stores, browsers, shells, databases, file systems, and deployment environments.
- Describe actions that would cause harm if performed without authorization, including deleting data, changing permissions, sending messages, making purchases, deploying code, or exporting records.
Turn the model into acceptance criteria
For each important action, state who may perform it, which data they may see, what validation is required, what audit event is produced, and how failure is handled. Include abuse cases such as an expired session, a user changing an object identifier, a document containing hostile instructions, or a tool call made with a lower-privilege account. These statements give reviewers something more precise than “the AI should be safe.”
Use AI-specific requirements without dropping general controls
OWASP AI Security Verification Standard (AISVS) 1.0, released in June 2026, contains 191 requirements across 12 chapters and three appendices. Each requirement has verification level 1, 2, or 3. Translate relevant requirements into acceptance criteria, code-review checks, and repeatable CI tests. AISVS intentionally covers AI/ML-specific requirements; pair it with ordinary application, infrastructure, identity, and software-supply-chain verification.

Stage 2: Check generated code, configuration, and dependencies
Run automation, but make the review broader than the application source directory. AI assistants commonly modify files that determine what gets tested and what reaches production.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Review the complete change set
- Inspect application code and all test files.
- Review dependency manifests and lockfiles for new or changed packages.
- Check build scripts, CI workflows, container definitions, infrastructure-as-code, deployment manifests, and environment configuration.
- Compare generated changes with the written requirements and threat model, not only with the previous commit.
Automate baseline checks
Use static code analysis, secret scanning, dependency analysis, and configuration checks. Search for hardcoded credentials, private keys, tokens, unsafe deserialization, shell or SQL construction from untrusted input, permissive cross-origin settings, debug endpoints, and logging of sensitive values. Review authentication and authorization middleware at every route, not just at the UI.
Monitor included components against known vulnerability databases. NIST notes that vulnerabilities may be reported after a release, so dependency verification is an ongoing activity rather than a one-time approval.
Examine data handling paths
Trace collection, storage, transmission, retention, deletion, backups, and logs for personal and proprietary data. Confirm that a user can neither read another tenant’s records nor infer them through error messages, search results, embeddings, or model responses. Verify that encryption, key handling, and access controls match the sensitivity of each store.
Stage 3: Test behavior outside the happy path
Build black-box tests from the requirements and threat model. Do not rely on examples supplied by the coding assistant; independently choose cases that could expose a broken assumption.

- Submit invalid, malformed, empty, null, and unexpectedly typed values.
- Try minimum, maximum, negative, zero, and just-over-the-limit values.
- Use very long strings, deeply nested structures, duplicate fields, unusual encodings, and mixed character sets.
- Combine individually valid inputs to test conflicting states and race conditions.
Exercise identity and state
- Use expired, revoked, malformed, and replayed tokens.
- Change object identifiers, tenant identifiers, role claims, and pagination cursors.
- Run concurrent requests against the same resource and repeat operations that should be idempotent.
- Interrupt requests during writes and verify that partial updates cannot create an unauthorized state.
Exercise capacity and recovery
Test overload behavior, rate limits, queue backlogs, timeouts, retries, and dependency failures where they are relevant to the product. Verify that errors fail closed, do not disclose secrets, and leave data consistent. Fuzzing can automate exploration of unusual or malformed inputs. For a network-facing application, add an appropriate web application scanner and investigate every finding rather than treating its report as a verdict.

Keep regression cases
Every confirmed defect should become a durable regression test that fails on the vulnerable behavior and passes only after the fix. Include authorization and privacy regressions, not just functional bugs. Preserve the original exploit shape so a future model change, refactor, or dependency update cannot silently reintroduce it.
Stage 4: Inspect AI-generated changes and tests together
Read the implementation and its tests as one artifact. The most dangerous review mistake is approving a test that merely confirms what the generated code currently does.
Look for weakened evidence
- A failing test was deleted, renamed, skipped, or excluded from CI.
- A strict assertion was replaced with a broad truthy check or a snapshot that accepts unintended output.
- The test now mocks the component, authorization layer, database, or cryptographic operation that needed verification.
- Expected behavior was changed to match a bug instead of changing the implementation.
- Fixtures no longer represent multiple roles, tenants, or failure states.
- Coverage increased numerically while security-critical branches remain unexecuted.
Add independent security tests
Have a human reviewer write or commission tests for authentication, authorization, input validation, secret handling, and cryptographic operations. Keep these tests separate from the agent’s suggested cases when practical, so they provide an independent challenge. Examine the test runner and CI configuration to ensure the tests really execute in the same build that will be released.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Stage 5: Review privacy and permissions in the development workflow
Privacy risk can occur before the app ships. Depending on its configuration, a coding assistant may receive open files, project structure, terminal output, prompts, logs, and diagnostic data. Those materials can contain credentials, personal information, proprietary algorithms, or detailed architecture.
Control assistant context
- Determine exactly which files, directories, symbols, prompts, and command output the assistant can send to its provider.
- Exclude environment files, private keys, credential stores, production dumps, customer exports, and other sensitive paths where the tool supports exclusions.
- Use sanitized fixtures and redacted logs when asking for help.
- Review retention, training, access, and regional processing terms in the provider’s current documentation; different tools do not necessarily handle data the same way.
Audit agent capabilities
Record whether an agent can execute commands, install packages, access the network, read files outside the project, alter CI settings, create cloud resources, or push changes. Grant the least privilege needed for the task, isolate credentials, require approval for high-impact commands, and log actions. A review that covers only the generated source misses a compromise enabled by an overpowered development agent.
Stage 6: Run adversarial tests on LLM and agent features
Use the integrated application, not an isolated model prompt. Record the model, system prompt, retrieval configuration, tool definitions, authorization context, and test data for each run.

Probe prompt injection
Test direct attacks in user input and indirect attacks embedded in retrieved documents, web pages, uploaded files, and tool output. Ask whether an injected instruction can override system rules, alter the task, reveal hidden instructions, or cause an unauthorized tool call. Treat retrieved content and tool output as untrusted data, even when it appears authoritative.
Check disclosure and tenant isolation
- Request system-prompt content, secrets, credentials, hidden tool instructions, and internal error details.
- Attempt to retrieve another tenant’s records by changing names, IDs, filters, language, or conversation history.
- Ask the model to reveal personal data that was present in context but is outside the user’s authorization.
- Verify that refusal and redaction behavior does not leak the sensitive value through summaries, citations, autocomplete, or logs.
Test output handling
Follow model output to every sink. Untrusted text must not reach a browser, shell, SQL engine, template renderer, file path, or API request without context-appropriate validation and encoding. Try markup, shell metacharacters, SQL fragments, path traversal, oversized output, and structured data that violates the expected schema.
Test tools, permissions, and destructive actions
Attempt to invoke tools outside the user’s role, change resources belonging to another account, chain low-risk tools into a harmful action, and repeat calls until a rate or budget limit is exhausted. Restrict tool scopes, validate arguments server-side, and require explicit human approval for destructive or irreversible operations. The model should never be the final authority for authorization.
Test resource exhaustion
Use token floods, recursive prompts, long retrieval results, tool-call loops, and expensive external requests to find denial-of-service and runaway-cost paths. Verify timeouts, concurrency limits, token budgets, circuit breakers, and cancellation. Repeat the tests after material changes to prompts, models, tools, retrieval data, or authorization logic.
Use evaluation and red-team tooling appropriately
The OWASP DevSecOps guidance discusses open-source options such as garak, promptfoo, PyRIT, DeepTeam, and Giskard, as well as commercial service categories. These references are examples of test approaches, not a ranking or proof of comparative effectiveness. Choose tools that can exercise your actual prompts, retrieval path, tools, and permissions, then validate important findings manually.

Stage 7: Record results and make a release decision
For every test run, record the application version, commit, environment, test conditions, and observed result. For AI features, also record the model and version, system-prompt version, tool and retrieval configuration, relevant data snapshot, temperature or other sampling settings, and authorization context.

Handle nondeterminism
Run repeated trials for behaviors that can vary between responses. Preserve a regression corpus containing confirmed prompt-injection attempts, disclosure probes, authorization bypasses, unsafe outputs, and resource-exhaustion cases. A single successful refusal is not evidence that a bypass cannot occur.
Classify and fix findings
Describe the affected asset, preconditions, reproducible steps, impact, evidence, owner, and remediation. Retest the fix and add a regression case. Escalate unresolved authorization, secret-exposure, cross-tenant, remote-code-execution, destructive-tool, or serious privacy findings before release.
State limits honestly
Do not claim that an app is secure because unit tests pass, static analysis is clean, or one red-team exercise found no issue. The cited standards provide practical verification methods; they do not certify a particular application or replace a qualified review for high-risk systems.
Which testing methods belong in the pipeline?
| Method | Primary layer examined | How it helps | Important limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Static analysis and secret scanning | Source, configuration, and history | Finds suspicious patterns and exposed credentials without running the app | Cannot demonstrate runtime authorization or model behavior |
| Functional, negative, structural, and regression tests | Application behavior | Checks requirements, invalid cases, internal paths, and previously fixed defects | Only covers the cases and assertions that were actually written |
| Fuzzing | Input and parser boundaries | Explores large populations of unusual or malformed values | Needs useful oracles and does not replace authorization review |
| Web application scanning | Network-facing behavior | Detects classes of externally observable vulnerabilities | May miss business-logic flaws, authorization context, and AI-specific attacks |
| Dependency and supply-chain checks | Packages, libraries, services, and build inputs | Identifies known vulnerable or risky components and unexpected changes | New vulnerabilities can be disclosed after a release |
| AI red-team and evaluation tools | Prompts, retrieval, model output, tools, and permissions | Automates adversarial probes and repeated model evaluations | Results depend on coverage, configuration, and human validation |
| Human review | Requirements, trust boundaries, and attack paths | Checks intent and combinations automated tools often miss | Requires an accountable reviewer with appropriate expertise |
How NIST and OWASP guidance fit together
NIST IR 8397 was published on October 6, 2021; NIST’s summary page records an update on October 6, 2026. Use its broadly applicable verification techniques as a minimum baseline for vendor or developer verification, not as a complete assurance framework.
The OWASP AI Testing Guide, version 1, was published November 26, 2025. It extends testing dimensions for AI systems beyond traditional application checks. AISVS 1.0, released in June 2026, provides 191 AI/ML-focused requirements with three verification levels. A practical program uses all three ideas together: ordinary software and supply-chain controls, AI-specific requirements, and independent human accountability.
Pre-deployment checklist
- Requirements identify roles, sensitive data, external services, and harmful unauthorized actions.
- Expected, invalid, boundary, overload, concurrency, and regression cases have evidence.
- Authentication, authorization, validation, storage, deletion, logging, and API calls received independent review.
- The full diff includes tests, lockfiles, CI, build, and deployment files.
- No tests were removed, weakened, or mocked around the unit under test without a documented reason.
- Dependencies and included services are monitored for newly disclosed vulnerabilities.
- Assistant context excludes secrets and unnecessary personal or proprietary data.
- Agent command, network, package, cloud, and repository permissions are least-privilege and logged.
- LLM features were tested for prompt injection, disclosure, retrieval authorization, unsafe output handling, tool abuse, and resource exhaustion.
- Destructive or irreversible actions require human approval and server-side authorization.
- Model, prompt, tool, data, and environment versions are recorded; nondeterministic tests were repeated.
- Confirmed findings have fixes, regression cases, owners, and a documented residual-risk decision.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need AI-specific testing if the app only uses an AI coding assistant during development?
You still need ordinary application security, privacy, dependency, and code-review controls. Add runtime AI adversarial testing when the shipped product itself includes an LLM, retrieval feature, or agent.
How often should AI security tests be rerun?
Repeat them after material changes to the model, system prompt, tools, retrieval data, authorization logic, dependencies, or deployment environment, and retain confirmed bypasses as regression cases.
Who is responsible for approving AI-generated changes?
A human reviewer remains accountable for requirements, authorization boundaries, privacy decisions, and the release risk. Automation supplies evidence but does not transfer that responsibility to the model.
