Test typography by resizing the page through narrow, intermediate, and wide browser viewports, then separately enlarge text or zoom to 200%. At each setting, check whether text remains readable, content reflows, and controls stay visible and usable. Use an actual device for an additional check when practical; automated accessibility scans can help, but they do not replace visual review.

What to inspect when text and screen size change

Test more than paragraphs. Review a representative page title, headings, body copy, navigation labels, buttons, form labels, and text inside narrow cards or sidebars. Follow the text through its surrounding layout: a font can remain legible while its container clips it or pushes a control off-screen.

  • Wrapping: Do words and lines wrap naturally, or do headings break into awkward fragments?
  • Clipping and overlap: Is any text cut off, covered by another element, or overlapping an icon, image, or control?
  • Truncation: Are labels or paragraphs shortened in a way that hides information or makes an action unclear?
  • Constrained text: Do narrow cards, sidebars, or fixed-width elements leave text cramped or difficult to read?
  • Scrolling and access: Does the page introduce unnecessary horizontal scrolling, or does any content or functionality become unavailable?

These are practical visual checks, not a claim that any particular defect is common. Record the viewport or text-size setting and the affected element when you find an issue so it can be reproduced.

Test responsive widths in browser developer tools

  1. Open the page in Chrome and open DevTools. Turn on the Device Toolbar, then resize the viewport dynamically. Chrome documents this workflow for checking reflow in its DevTools accessibility features reference.
  2. Check narrow, intermediate, and wide widths. Include widths between the design’s breakpoints; a layout can look fine at its named breakpoints but fail in between. Also try portrait and landscape orientations where relevant.
  3. Read the representative content. Inspect the title, headings, paragraphs, navigation, buttons, form labels, and text in narrow components for wrapping, clipping, overlap, truncation, and loss of access.
  4. Check a narrow effective width against reflow expectations. WCAG Success Criterion 1.4.10 uses a width equivalent to 320 CSS pixels for vertically scrolling content and a height equivalent to 256 CSS pixels for horizontally scrolling content, subject to exceptions for content that requires two-dimensional layout. These are criterion dimensions, not empirical performance statistics. See W3C’s explanation of Reflow.

Viewport emulation is useful for fast, repeatable inspection, but it does not represent every real browser and device. Treat it as one part of testing, not proof of universal device behavior.

Test text enlargement separately from viewport resizing

A responsive viewport check alone does not establish that readers can enlarge text. WCAG Success Criterion 1.4.4 requires text—except captions and images of text—to be resizable without assistive technology up to 200% without loss of content or functionality. W3C’s Resize Text guidance explains the criterion, and Technique G179 describes increasing text size to 200% and checking that all content and functionality remain available.

  1. Use the browser’s text-size controls where available, and test browser zoom as a separate check.
  2. Increase text to 200%, then inspect the same content and controls you checked at ordinary size.
  3. Confirm that text can be read and that no content or functionality is lost, hidden, clipped, or made unusable.
  4. When possible, check browser font-size settings as well. The UK Department for Work and Pensions’ responsive-design testing guidance recommends text scaling to at least 200%, browser font-size checks, DevTools resizing, and viewing the site on a different device. Its instructions describe Chrome; other browsers may differ.

Do not assume fluid-looking text automatically passes. W3C’s Failure Technique F94 explains that using viewport units as the primary font-size method can prevent common browser text-resizing methods from changing text size. The outcome matters: verify that users can actually resize the text. W3C techniques are examples, not mandatory implementation recipes. Its Technique G146 describes liquid layouts that adapt and reflow, but a particular CSS approach is not a substitute for checking the result.

Choose the right combination of checks

Approach Useful for Limitation
Responsive viewport emulation in DevTools Inspecting behavior across widths and orientations; quick iterative checks Does not substitute for testing every real device and browser combination
Browser text resizing or zoom Checking whether text can enlarge while content and controls remain available Must be tested separately from ordinary viewport resizing
Automated accessibility scan Some detectable accessibility issues and repeatable regression checks Does not assess every visual typography defect or replace manual review
Real-device inspection Seeing behavior on an actual device and browser One device cannot represent all device and browser combinations

Playwright documents browser accessibility checks using axe-core and recommends manual assessment as well. See Playwright’s accessibility testing guide. A passing automated scan does not show that typography looks good at every width; keep the manual checks in the workflow.

You can capture a page at a chosen URL and inspect screenshots at different viewport settings with ScreenshotNeo, a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. Its options include 12 device presets and custom viewports. A screenshot helps review layout and wrapping visually, but it does not replace the browser text-resizing test or a real-device check.
