The dependable way to test a migration is to pair every old URL with its intended new route, capture a known-good baseline, run the same journeys against the candidate site, and compare screenshots in a reproducible Playwright project. Treat the image diff as one signal: also assert redirects, canonical destinations, HTTP responses, console errors, and important assets. This catches visual regressions without accepting a new baseline merely because a deployment changed.

What an automated migration screenshot test can (and cannot) prove

A screenshot comparison answers: “Does this route render the same approved experience in the same browser project?” It can expose changed spacing, missing images, broken fonts, collapsed sections, wrong responsive behavior, and unexpected page composition. It cannot find a route that was omitted from the test inventory, prove that search engines can crawl every page, or explain a failure by itself.

  • Page-level screenshots catch composition, spacing, navigation, and long-page changes.
  • Component screenshots narrow diagnosis for headers, cards, forms, and other reusable pieces.
  • Viewport screenshots represent the first-screen experience and are usually less affected by lazy-loading differences.
  • Full-page screenshots cover the complete document, including content below the fold.

Use both page and component coverage where a migration changes shared templates. Keep visual assertions beside functional assertions so a page that looks similar but redirects incorrectly still fails.

1. Build a migration URL inventory before writing tests

Export URLs from the old site and the candidate site, then create an explicit pair for each route. A screenshot test only covers what you include.

  1. Pair equivalent old and new routes, including trailing-slash and case rules.
  2. Record the expected redirect chain and final canonical URL for every changed route.
  3. Mark pages that are intentionally removed or redesigned; do not let an intentional change look like an unexplained regression.
  4. Include representative templates: landing pages, product or article pages, listing pages, forms, search, authenticated journeys, and error pages.
  5. Add high-value pages first, then expand to the long tail once the harness is stable.

A useful inventory record contains the old URL, candidate URL, expected final URL, page type, authentication requirement, viewport projects, and whether the screenshot is full-page or component-level. Keep it in version control so route coverage changes are reviewable.

2. Freeze a known-good baseline

Run the approved pre-migration site in a controlled browser project and save its screenshots. Playwright generates reference screenshots on the first run; later runs compare against those references. The baseline is meaningful only when it is tied to a known commit, browser project, viewport, locale, and data fixture.

  • Use stable test data instead of records that change during the run.
  • Pin the browser version and run baseline and candidate captures in the same operating-system and CI image.
  • Store snapshots with the test name, route, browser project, and viewport in the path.
  • Record which visual changes are intentional before the migration begins.

Playwright documents that rendering can vary with the host operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode. Keep those conditions consistent between baseline creation and comparison. See Playwright’s visual comparisons documentation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Set up Playwright for the migration

In a new Node.js project, install Playwright Test and a browser, then keep the test and snapshot files in version control.

npm init -y
npm install -D @playwright/test
npx playwright install chromium

Use separate projects for the browser engines and viewport widths that matter to your audience. A single project is faster; a browser matrix reveals engine-specific defects.

// playwright.config.ts
import { defineConfig, devices } from '@playwright/test';

export default defineConfig({
  testDir: './tests',
  snapshotPathTemplate: '{testDir}/__screenshots__/{testFilePath}/{arg}-{projectName}{ext}',
  use: {
    baseURL: process.env.CANDIDATE_URL,
    trace: 'retain-on-failure',
    video: 'retain-on-failure',
  },
  projects: [
    { name: 'chromium-desktop', use: { ...devices['Desktop Chrome'], viewport: { width: 1440, height: 900 } } },
    { name: 'chromium-mobile', use: { ...devices['iPhone 13'] } },
  ],
});

Set CANDIDATE_URL to the migration environment when running candidate tests. Create a separate baseline project or environment variable for the approved old site; never overwrite the references accidentally by pointing both runs at an unreviewed deployment.

4. Write a test that checks the route and the pixels

The following pattern asserts the final URL, waits for the page to settle, and compares a full-page screenshot. The options are documented in the PageAssertions API reference.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
import { test, expect } from '@playwright/test';

test('migrated page matches its approved baseline', async ({ page }) => {
  await page.goto('https://candidate.example.com/products/widget', { waitUntil: 'networkidle' });
  await expect(page).toHaveURL(//products/widget/);
  await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot('products-widget.png', {
    animations: 'disabled',
    fullPage: true,
    stylePath: './screenshot-stabilizers.css',
    threshold: 0.2,
  });
});

For a real inventory, generate one test per route or data-drive the route list. Keep a separate screenshot name for each meaningful component so a failing page image can be diagnosed quickly.

const routes = [
  { name: 'home', path: '/' },
  { name: 'widget', path: '/products/widget' },
  { name: 'search', path: '/search?q=widget' },
];

for (const route of routes) {
  test(`${route.name} migration`, async ({ page }) => {
    const response = await page.goto(route.path, { waitUntil: 'networkidle' });
    expect(response?.ok()).toBeTruthy();
    await expect(page).toHaveURL(new RegExp(route.path.replace(/[.*+?^${}()|[]\]/g, '\$&')));
    await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot(`${route.name}.png`, {
      animations: 'disabled',
      fullPage: true,
      stylePath: './screenshot-stabilizers.css',
      threshold: 0.2,
    });
  });
}

For redirects, assert the final destination rather than the initial request URL:

test('legacy route redirects to its canonical destination', async ({ page }) => {
  const response = await page.goto('/old-widget');
  expect(response?.status()).toBeGreaterThanOrEqual(200);
  await expect(page).toHaveURL('https://candidate.example.com/products/widget');
  await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot('widget-canonical.png', { fullPage: true, animations: 'disabled' });
});

5. Stabilize screenshots without hiding real defects

Flaky visual tests usually capture transient state rather than a migration bug. Stabilize only the sources of noise you can explain.

Wait for meaningful content and fonts

networkidle is useful, but it does not guarantee that a client-rendered component or web font is ready. Wait for a selector that proves the page is usable, and wait for fonts when typography is part of the comparison.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
await page.goto('/products/widget', { waitUntil: 'networkidle' });
await page.locator('[data-testid="product-content"]').waitFor({ state: 'visible' });
await page.evaluate(() => document.fonts.ready);

Disable animation and transitions

Pass animations: 'disabled' to the assertion and add a narrowly scoped stylesheet for transitions, blinking cursors, and carousels.

/* screenshot-stabilizers.css */
*, *::before, *::after {
  animation-delay: 0s !important;
  animation-duration: 0s !important;
  animation-iteration-count: 1 !important;
  transition: none !important;
  caret-color: transparent !important;
}

Do not disable behavior that is itself being tested. A migration that removes a loading state or freezes a carousel unexpectedly should be visible in a dedicated functional test.

Control hover, focus, and pointer state

Move the pointer away from interactive targets before capture, and set focus deliberately. Otherwise a navigation flyout or tooltip can appear in one run only.

await page.mouse.move(2, 2);
await page.locator('body').press('Escape');

Mask volatile regions

Mask rotating advertisements, timestamps, personalized names, random IDs, and live counters. A mask should cover the smallest selector possible; a page-wide mask can hide a genuine layout shift.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot('dashboard.png', {
  fullPage: true,
  animations: 'disabled',
  mask: [
    page.locator('[data-testid="current-time"]'),
    page.locator('[data-testid="personalized-name"]'),
  ],
});

Playwright’s screenshot assertion takes screenshots until two consecutive images match before comparison. That reduces transient capture noise, but it does not make an unstable application correct.

6. Choose tolerances deliberately

Start strict, then document every exception. A threshold should permit known antialiasing or rendering noise, never conceal a broad layout shift.

Setting Use Risk
Strict pixel comparison Best for controlled CI images and critical layouts Can flag harmless antialiasing differences
threshold Allows a documented per-pixel color difference Too much tolerance can hide real visual defects
Maximum differing pixels Limits the total changed area A small threshold can still permit a meaningful localized defect if the limit is too high
Masked regions Excludes known dynamic content Overly broad masks remove evidence of regressions

Keep tolerance changes in code review with a reason such as a specific browser-rendering difference. Never use a blanket increase to make a failing migration green.

7. Test the environments your users actually receive

Use Playwright projects for relevant browsers, viewport widths, locales, and authenticated states. Generate references in the same environment used for comparison. If the old baseline was created on one operating system and the candidate runs on another, font metrics and antialiasing can create misleading diffs.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

  • Desktop and mobile viewport widths expose different responsive breakpoints.
  • Multiple browser engines reveal CSS and form-control differences.
  • Locale projects catch date, number, and text-expansion changes.
  • Authenticated projects cover account-only routes with a controlled storage state.

Do not multiply projects without a reason. Start with the environments that represent your traffic and add a project when a real defect or support requirement justifies it.

8. Assert more than the screenshot

Pair visual assertions with checks that image comparison cannot provide:

  • Redirects: assert the final URL for every legacy route.
  • Canonical URLs: read the canonical link and compare it with the inventory.
  • HTTP responses: fail on missing documents, failed navigation, or unexpected status codes.
  • Console errors: collect browser errors and failed requests during the journey.
  • Assets: verify that important images, stylesheets, fonts, and scripts load.
  • Journeys: submit forms, run searches, and exercise authenticated flows before capturing the resulting state.
const consoleErrors: string[] = [];
page.on('console', message => {
  if (message.type() === 'error') consoleErrors.push(message.text());
});
page.on('pageerror', error => consoleErrors.push(error.message));

const response = await page.goto('/products/widget', { waitUntil: 'networkidle' });
expect(response?.ok()).toBeTruthy();
await expect(page.locator('link[rel="canonical"]')).toHaveAttribute('href', /products/widget/);
expect(consoleErrors).toEqual([]);

Keep these assertions separate from the screenshot expectation when possible. A test report should tell a reviewer whether the failure is visual, navigational, network-related, or JavaScript-related.

9. Run the suite in CI and publish evidence

Run the same command on every migration candidate and retain the baseline, actual image, diff image, trace, and video for failures.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
npx playwright test --project=chromium-desktop
npx playwright show-report

Publish the HTML report and diff artifacts as CI outputs. A pull request reviewer should be able to see the route, browser project, viewport, expected image, actual image, and diff without rerunning the test locally. Parallelize independent routes only after confirming that shared test data and rate limits do not make captures nondeterministic.

10. Triage every diff before changing a baseline

Classify the failure first, then fix the migration or the test.

Symptom Likely class First action
Final URL is wrong Redirect or canonical problem Inspect redirect rules and canonical markup; do not update the image
Large blank area or missing image Missing asset or failed request Check network responses, asset URLs, and console errors
Only text or timestamps differ Volatile content Freeze fixture data or mask the smallest dynamic selector
Diff moves between runs Capture noise Wait for the meaningful selector, fonts, and stable state; align environments
Consistent spacing or typography shift Real layout defect Inspect CSS, font loading, viewport, and migrated markup
Intentional redesign Expected change Obtain human approval, update the route’s reference, and record why

Require human review before using --update-snapshots or any equivalent baseline-update command. Updating first can erase the evidence of a broken migration.

11. Keep snapshots maintainable after launch

Use snapshotPathTemplate, or an equivalent project convention, so snapshots are separated by test, route, browser project, and viewport. Review snapshot changes in version control. Delete obsolete route snapshots after the migration is complete; stale references create false confidence and storage noise.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When a shared header changes intentionally, update the affected page and component references together. When only one route changes, avoid regenerating the entire suite. Keep the inventory and snapshot names aligned so a reviewer can trace an image back to its migration requirement.

Page-level versus component-level coverage

Choice Best for Trade-off
Page-level Composition, spacing, navigation, and route-specific content Failures can contain many unrelated changes
Component-level Shared headers, cards, forms, and isolated diagnosis Can miss interactions between components
Full-page Long-form content and below-the-fold regressions More sensitive to lazy-loading and dynamic sections
Viewport First-screen experience and responsive breakpoints Does not cover content below the fold

Performance, reliability, and cost considerations

  • Run a small smoke set on every commit and the complete inventory on migration candidates or scheduled builds.
  • Reuse authenticated storage state instead of logging in repeatedly, while ensuring the fixture is deterministic.
  • Keep full-page captures for pages where below-the-fold coverage matters; use viewport or component captures for faster feedback elsewhere.
  • Do not parallelize beyond what the environment and test data can handle; throttling and race conditions create false diffs.
  • Cache-free, consistent data is preferable to a faster but changing source. A fast unstable test still costs debugging time.

ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API and MCP server when you need captures without maintaining a browser project. It accepts consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and each response reports its result in X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. An MCP server exposes take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf to Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.

For a one-off candidate capture, use the API documented at ScreenshotNeo’s documentation:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);

The API supports full-page capture with lazy images loaded, CSS-selector element capture, dark mode, 12 device presets or any viewport, retina scale, PDF output with paper size, margins, landscape, and page ranges, HTML/CSS-to-image, custom CSS and JavaScript, pre-capture clicks, hidden selectors, waits for a selector, delay, or network idle, blocking ads, trackers, requests, or resource types, custom headers, cookies, user agents, and Authorization, timezone and geolocation, transparent backgrounds, image resizing, chosen cache TTLs, signed links for public <img> tags, asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, bulk capture of 100 URLs per call, a usage API, an OpenAPI specification, and compatible parameter names used by other screenshot APIs.

FAQ

Should a migration test compare HTML as well as screenshots?

Yes. HTML, URL, status, canonical, console, and asset checks explain failures that a pixel diff cannot. Use screenshots for rendered appearance, not as a replacement for semantic and network assertions.

How do I handle a page that is intentionally redesigned?

Mark it as an intentional change in the inventory, obtain human approval for the new appearance, and replace only that route’s reference. Keep the old image in the review history so the decision remains auditable.

What should happen when a route is intentionally removed?

Remove its screenshot expectation only after verifying the planned response and redirect behavior. Leaving an obsolete snapshot in the suite can make coverage appear higher than it is.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I use one baseline for every browser?

Use a baseline per browser project and viewport. Rendering differences between engines and host environments can otherwise produce noise that masks migration defects.
