You can test a workflow that waits three days without letting three real days pass: freeze the test clock, keep background queue work under control, and advance the workflow deliberately. The important part is to test what happens around the wait—especially that the workflow stays asleep before its wake time and performs the expected work afterward—not just that a step reports a three-day delay.
What “seven days in ten milliseconds” means
Steve McDougall’s August 2026 article, “Seven Days in Ten Milliseconds”, is a practical guide to testing waits in durable workflows. Its headline describes test-time control of elapsed time, not a production benchmark or a claim that every seven-day workflow runs in ten milliseconds.
The underlying idea is to treat a long wait as persisted workflow state with a future wake time, rather than as a worker that must remain blocked for days. In the article’s model, the workflow is saved as sleeping and a delayed job is expected to move it forward when it is due. A test can own the clock and choose when to attempt that advancement.
What the test needs to prove
Consider an abandoned-cart workflow: send an initial reminder, wait three days, send a final reminder, then stop. The delay is 259,200 seconds, but a test should not sleep in real time for that duration. It should establish the workflow’s behavior at the important boundaries:

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- After the first reminder, the workflow is sleeping and the initial side effect has occurred.
- Before the three-day wake time, an attempted advancement does not run the later step or send the final reminder.
- Once the wake time has passed, advancement runs the final reminder and the workflow reaches completion.
This tests system behavior, not merely a return value. A duration assertion alone could pass even if scheduling is broken, a delayed job is lost, workflow context is missing, or an early advance incorrectly runs the next step.
Drive the workflow across the wait
McDougall’s example uses a frozen clock, a fake queue to keep background processing from advancing the workflow unexpectedly, and deliberate calls to the engine’s advance operation. The article describes that operation as processing one step per call. That is an important detail: the test should advance once for each intended step, including the step that moves the instance beyond its final action and into completion.

- Freeze the clock and control queue processing. Make time deterministic for the test and prevent a background worker from changing workflow state behind the assertions.
- Start the workflow and advance its initial step. Check that the initial reminder was sent and that the instance is parked in a sleeping state with a future wake time.
- Move the test clock forward by two days. Attempt to advance the instance before its three-day wait has expired.
- Assert that the workflow is still asleep. Verify that the final reminder has not been queued or sent.
- Move the clock past the wake time and advance again. Check that the final reminder occurs, then advance the remaining step if needed and assert that the instance completes.
The exact engine API names and setup depend on the workflow implementation. The source article presents this testing pattern, but does not establish independently verified package documentation for those APIs; use the documentation for the engine in your own project when translating the sequence into code.

Why the early-advance assertion matters
A test that jumps directly from the initial reminder to eventual completion covers the happy path but can miss a timing defect. The early attempt checks the boundary condition: while the stored wake time is still in the future, the workflow must not progress. Pair that negative assertion with the later positive assertion that the final reminder does happen after the wait. Together, they test both “not yet” and “now it is due.”

This approach also helps distinguish workflow logic from scheduling infrastructure. Explicit advancement makes the test deterministic; verifying the sleeping state and wake time exercises the persisted wait; checking the delayed side effect and completion exercises what the workflow does after waking. A test should not imply that a fake queue alone validates a real scheduler’s delivery behavior.

Keep the test’s claims precise
- Do not describe a fast test as proof that a production workflow executes in milliseconds. It shows that the test controls modeled time.
- Do not stop at checking the configured delay. Confirm the before-wake behavior and the post-wake side effect.
- Do not assume one advance call drains the workflow. In the article’s example engine, each call handles one step.
- Keep the clock and queue deterministic so the test—not an asynchronous worker—controls when the workflow changes state.
