Evaluate a slide-change detector by comparing its predicted transition times with manually verified reference events. Before scoring, define what counts as a transition, how close a prediction must be to count as correct, and how gradual changes are handled. Then report precision, recall, F1, and timing error on varied real presentation videos, supported by controlled cases with known transition times.

Define what counts as a slide change

Write down the event you want the detector to find before building a test set. For example, decide whether a transition means the first visible change to a new slide, the point when the new slide is fully visible, or an interval covering a fade. Also decide whether an animated build that changes content on the same slide counts as a transition.

These choices affect both the reference annotations and the score. For gradual transitions, preserve an interval or specify which boundary represents the event. For ambiguous cases such as partial changes or overlays, record the annotation rule and apply it consistently. The sources do not establish a universal adjudication rule or reviewer-agreement threshold.

Build a trustworthy reference set

Manually review each video and record its identifier and transition timestamp; for gradual changes, retain the interval annotation you chose. A reference list of checked events makes it possible to score detections rather than judge them by visual impression. An IIT Bombay thesis on lecture-video slide transitions defines precision, recall, and average timing error against actual transition times, while a 2026 slide-annotation study also compares detected boundaries with manually annotated ground truth.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

If more than one person annotates the material, retain disagreements and document how they were resolved. Keep the original annotations where practical so that later reviewers can understand uncertain boundaries.

Set the event-matching rule before scoring

A prediction near a reference boundary may be accepted within a timing window, but a wider window makes it easier for a detector to score a match. State the permitted difference in time and use the same tolerance for every detector in a comparison. The cited slide-transition studies use their own protocols; they do not establish one tolerance as correct for every application.

Use one-to-one matching: one reference transition can match no more than one prediction, and one prediction can match no more than one reference event. Otherwise, several predictions clustered around a single true boundary could all be counted as correct. If the reference is an interval, state whether a prediction is judged by the nearest endpoint or by overlap with that interval.

Report detection and timing quality separately

For event detection, report:

  • Precision: the share of predicted transitions that match reference events. Low precision means many false alarms.
  • Recall: the share of reference transitions that the detector finds. Low recall means many missed transitions.
  • F1: a combined summary of precision and recall. Include the underlying precision and recall as well, because F1 alone can conceal which error is more common.

Also report timing error for matched events. The IIT Bombay thesis defines average timing error as actual transition time minus detected time, so its sign indicates which timestamp came earlier. If you report absolute error instead, say so; absolute values show the size of the offset but not its direction. Explain how unmatched predictions and missed events are treated rather than silently folding them into a timing average.

Test real videos and controlled cases

Use representative held-out recordings

Use videos that resemble the detector’s intended inputs, and keep a held-out set for evaluation rather than tuning against every video you score. Include different capture conditions so the result is not based only on clean demonstrations. A recent study, “A Slide Annotation System with Multimodal Analysis for Video Presentation Review” (2026), reports a comparison using five presentation videos. That is the scope of that study, not a general recommendation for benchmark size.

Add reproducible cases with known transitions

Controlled videos can provide exact transition times and help isolate specific failure modes. They are useful for repeatable checks, but synthetic-only results do not show that a detector generalizes to real recordings. Larry Xue’s individual technical report illustrates synthetic fixtures with clean, noisy, and animated-overlay variants; it is an implementation example, not a peer-reviewed benchmark or field standard.

Break results down by difficult conditions

Show results by video and by condition as well as in an overall aggregate. Useful conditions to examine include:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Compression or image noise, which may make boundaries harder to identify or create spurious changes.
  • Gradual fades or other transitions that do not have a single obvious boundary.
  • Overlays, animations, or moving content that can trigger false detections without a new slide.
  • Frame-sampling intervals, since looking less often can affect both detection and timestamp precision.

The 2026 slide-annotation study reports evaluating different sampling intervals and temporal debouncing. Treat these as factors to disclose and test for your own use case, not proof that one interval or debounce setting is best for every detector.

Compare detectors on equal terms

When comparing systems, use the same videos, reference annotations, matching rule, and timing tolerance. A useful comparison separates these questions:

  • Detection quality: precision, recall, and F1.
  • Timing quality: signed or absolute boundary error for matched events, with the convention stated.
  • Robustness: results across videos and conditions such as noise, overlays, and gradual transitions.
  • Operating cost: sampling rate or processing burden alongside detection quality.
  • Reproducibility: fixed data splits, annotation procedure, detector version, and configuration.

For each run, record the detector version and configuration, video preprocessing, frame-sampling rate, matching tolerance, and ground-truth procedure. These details make it possible to interpret a score and repeat the comparison.

Use general change-detection benchmarks only as context

Changedetection.net provides annotated datasets and evaluation utilities for general video change and motion detection. Goyette and colleagues’ 2014 benchmark paper describes nearly 90,000 annotated frames across 31 video sequences and six categories. Those resources are useful precedents for annotation and evaluation, but their target is broader scene change or motion—not whether a presentation has moved to a new slide. Their scores therefore cannot validate a slide-transition detector directly.
