HTTP 200 only tells you that an HTTP request received a successful status. It does not prove that a remote Model Context Protocol (MCP) server accepted a valid MCP request, returned a valid response for that request, passed authorization, or completed a useful operation. A reliable health check verifies each layer separately: network and TLS, HTTP, MCP and JSON-RPC, then application behavior.

What an HTTP 200 does—and does not—tell you

A successful HTTP status is one signal in a larger check. The endpoint might return an invalid JSON-RPC body, a response with the wrong request ID, or an error inside an otherwise successful HTTP response. A request might also open an SSE stream without ever delivering its final response.

Keep the results distinct rather than turning them into a single green or red status. Useful signals include DNS and TLS reachability, HTTP status, authentication outcome, whether the MCP request was accepted, whether its JSON-RPC response was valid, whether the intended operation succeeded, and how long each stage took.

Choose what your health check needs to prove

Probe depth What it can establish What it cannot establish by itself Typical trade-off
Network and TLS The configured host can be reached and a TLS connection can be established. That the MCP endpoint accepts requests or that an application operation works. Low request cost, but shallow coverage.
Valid MCP request The endpoint accepts an MCP request and returns a valid, correlated JSON-RPC response. That a particular tool or downstream dependency is healthy. More representative than a connection check; response parsing is required.
MCP request plus application check The protocol works and a chosen operation reports its documented health result. Anything outside that operation’s actual scope. Deeper coverage, with possible dependency cost or operational risk.

Also decide whether the probe must handle SSE, which deployed protocol version it targets, and whether it uses production-equivalent authentication and Origin controls. Those choices affect whether a passing result reflects the service your clients actually use.

Run a layered probe

  1. Check network and TLS using the production route

Connect to the configured MCP URL using the production DNS name, TLS settings, and expected network route. Record DNS resolution, connection, TLS, timeout, and HTTP outcomes separately. A generic /health route is not evidence that MCP works unless the service explicitly defines that route as part of its MCP health contract.

  2. Send a valid request with production-equivalent access

For the Streamable HTTP specification dated 2026-07-28, MCP requests are JSON-RPC messages sent by POST to one MCP endpoint. Include Accept: application/json, text/event-stream and the required protocol-version metadata. The MCP-Protocol-Version header is required on each POST and must match the protocol version in the request metadata.

Use the authentication mechanism expected of real clients and an Origin that the deployment accepts. A probe with no credentials can mistake an authorization failure for an outage; a probe that bypasses Origin checks does not verify the intended access path.

  3. Validate the complete response

Accept a response as JSON or as a request-scoped SSE stream. For JSON, parse the response and check that it has the expected JSON-RPC shape, that its ID matches the request, and that it contains the expected result. Do not treat a parseable body or an HTTP 200 alone as success.

For SSE, parse events until the final JSON-RPC response for the request arrives or a defined deadline expires. Intermediate notifications may precede that response. A stream that opens but never supplies the final response, closes prematurely, or exceeds the deadline has not passed the probe.

Classify HTTP errors, JSON-RPC errors, malformed bodies, mismatched IDs, authentication failures, and premature stream closure separately. This makes failures easier to diagnose than one generic “unhealthy” result.

  4. Check application health with a safe operation

A tools/list request can show that the server handles an MCP operation and returns a tools result. It does not establish that every tool or downstream service is healthy. If the server provides a purpose-built health tool, invoke it and validate the status fields its documentation defines. Otherwise choose a low-risk representative operation and state what that operation actually verifies.

Avoid checks that cause destructive side effects or expensive repeated work. Google Cloud’s codelab illustrates a workflow that lists tools and invokes a gcp_resource_health_checker tool whose example result includes status and deployment metadata. That is an implementation example, not a universal MCP tool name or schema.

Match the probe to the server’s protocol version

The dated Streamable HTTP specification for 2026-07-28 removes the initialize/initialized handshake and protocol-level Mcp-Session-Id. Protocol version and client metadata are carried with requests. It also documents Mcp-Method and Mcp-Name routing headers.

Do not apply that flow blindly to an older deployment. The earlier 2025-11-25 transport specification describes a different shape, including sessions and a standalone GET stream. Check the server’s deployed version and its client compatibility target, then use a matching probe profile. If your estate has multiple versions, report which profile passed instead of presenting one result as proof for all of them.

The MCP transport overview describes the shared JSON-RPC model and notes that message-body metadata is authoritative. Where the body and protocol-version header disagree, a reachable endpoint is not a successful version-compatible probe.

Account for authentication, Origin, and SSE infrastructure

The MCP specification requires servers to validate the Origin header on incoming connections to prevent DNS rebinding attacks. It says an invalid supplied Origin must receive HTTP 403, and recommends proper authentication. Use limited probe credentials and the same access path intended for clients; do not disable authentication or Origin validation to make a check pass.

SSE behavior also depends on the path through infrastructure. The specification recommends X-Accel-Buffering: no so reverse proxies do not accumulate events, and encourages comment-line keep-alives for long-lived streams. For a routine health check, use a short, bounded request and verify its final response. A monitor for long-lived subscriptions needs a different timeout and success policy.

Make failures actionable in monitoring

Expose separate outcomes instead of collapsing the probe into “HTTP up” or “HTTP down.” For example, a monitoring record can distinguish endpoint and TLS reachability, HTTP status, authentication, MCP request acceptance, JSON-RPC validity, application result, and latency. Set the success condition to the deepest layer your service contract requires.

  • HTTP succeeds, JSON-RPC fails: investigate request shape, version metadata, response parsing, and server-side protocol errors.
  • Authentication or Origin fails: verify probe credentials and the expected Origin policy before treating it as a service outage.
  • SSE opens but no final response arrives: check the deadline, stream parsing, proxy buffering, and premature closure.
  • Protocol passes but application check fails: investigate the checked tool or dependency; do not infer that all MCP operations are broken.

These are diagnostic categories, not proof of a specific root cause. The exact behavior of an SDK, proxy, health tool, or deployment depends on its configuration and version.
