You can test a website on a new server before changing public DNS by adding a temporary entry to your computer’s hosts file. Map the production hostname to the proposed server IP, clear local DNS and browser caches if necessary, then open the site using its normal hostname. Only that computer follows the override; visitors and public DNS resolvers continue using the existing record.
This method is useful for checking the complete application—HTTPS, redirects, cookies, APIs, assets and virtual-host routing—without exposing an unfinished migration to everyone. Remove the entry and flush caches when validation is complete.

What a hosts-file DNS test actually changes
A hosts file is a local text file that maps an IP address to one or more hostnames. A typical line is:
203.0.113.10 example.com www.example.comThe first value is the address to connect to. The remaining values are names that should resolve to it on the edited machine. The mapping is read before (or instead of) a normal DNS query, depending on the operating system’s resolver configuration.

It does not create or edit an authoritative DNS record, alter your registrar, or change what recursive resolvers on the public Internet return. It affects only the machine where the line exists. A phone, colleague’s laptop, monitoring service and ordinary visitors will continue to use the current DNS answers.
Why the override is normally immediate
The Linux hosts(5) documentation describes the format as IP_address canonical_hostname [aliases...] and says modifications normally take effect immediately, except when applications cache the file. Windows DNS Client similarly checks local cached data, including hosts-file mappings, before it asks a DNS server. On Linux, the hosts line in /etc/nsswitch.conf controls lookup order; when files appears before dns, a matching hosts entry ends the lookup without a DNS query.
“Immediate” therefore means that the resolver path and application must read the file again. A browser, VPN client, proxy or encrypted-DNS implementation can retain an older answer and make a correct edit appear ineffective.
Before you edit: collect the exact names and address
Use the address assigned to the new origin and every production hostname that must be tested. For many sites that means the apex name and its www name; an API, admin panel, image host or other subdomain may also need a separate entry.

- Record the proposed IPv4 address and, if the service supports IPv6, its proposed IPv6 address.
- List the exact hostnames used in browser links, redirects, API requests, cookies and asset URLs.
- Confirm that the new server is configured to answer those names as virtual hosts.
- Check that its TLS certificate covers each HTTPS name you will open.
- Keep a copy of the original file or note the temporary line so it can be removed safely.
Do not replace an existing localhost or system entry. Add a separate line for the test, or append additional names to one line only when they truly share the same target address.
Windows: edit the hosts file and flush DNS
- Open Notepad or another text editor with administrator rights. In the Start menu, right-click the editor and choose Run as administrator.
- In the editor, choose File and Open, then browse to
C:WindowsSystem32driversetchosts. Change the file filter to All files; otherwise the hosts file may be hidden because it has no extension. - Add the target IP followed by every hostname to test. For example:
203.0.113.10 example.com www.example.comFor IPv6, add a separate line with the IPv6 address and names that should use it.
- Save the file exactly as
hosts. Ensure the editor does not append.txt. If necessary, save to the desktop first and copy the file into theetcdirectory with administrator approval. - Open an elevated Command Prompt and run
ipconfig /flushdns. A successful operation reports: “Windows IP configuration successfully flushed the DNS Resolver Cache.” - Close and reopen the browser if it still displays the old site. Some browsers maintain a host or connection cache independently of the operating-system cache.
Windows checks when the change is ignored
- Run
ipconfig /displaydnsand look for the hostname. An old cached answer can explain why the browser has not switched. - Confirm the file name and location. A file saved as
hosts.txtin another folder has no effect. - Check for a second line mapping the same hostname to another address. Remove or comment out conflicting temporary entries.
- Temporarily test without a VPN or proxy. Enterprise security software can provide its own DNS path.
macOS: edit /etc/hosts and restart the resolver state
- Open Terminal.
- Edit the file with administrator privileges, for example by running
sudo nano /etc/hosts. Enter your account password when prompted. - Add the target address and exact hostnames on one line, such as:
203.0.113.10 example.com www.example.comUse a second line for an IPv6 mapping when required.
- Save the file and exit the editor. In Nano, use
Control-O, pressReturnto confirm the path, then useControl-X. - Run
sudo killall -HUP mDNSResponderto clear the documented macOS resolver state. - Restart the browser if it continues to use the former address.
Preserve the existing localhost, broadcast and other system mappings. If you are unsure whether a line is system-provided, leave it untouched and add only your temporary entry.
Linux: check lookup order, edit safely and clear the right cache
- Inspect the resolver order with:
grep ^hosts /etc/nsswitch.confLook for
filesbeforedns. A different order or a custom resolver module may change how the hosts file is used. - Edit
/etc/hostsas root, for example withsudo nano /etc/hosts. - Add the target IPv4 and required hostnames. Add a separate IPv6 line when the site is intended to serve IPv6.
- Save without deleting the existing localhost and machine-name entries.
- If the computer uses systemd-resolved and an old answer persists, run
sudo resolvectl flush-caches. - If it uses nscd, restart that service or invalidate its hosts cache with
sudo nscd -i hosts. - Restart the browser or application that will perform the test.
Linux-specific failure points
A hosts entry can be correct while a program still resolves elsewhere. Containers, language runtimes, service meshes, VPN clients and applications with their own DNS libraries may not follow the host operating system’s normal nsswitch.conf path. Test from the same environment that will run the application, and inspect that environment’s resolver configuration if command-line and browser results disagree.
Verify the new origin with the real hostname
Always browse to the production hostname, not merely the numeric address. The hostname is what exercises TLS certificate selection, HTTP virtual-host routing, redirects, cookies and origin-specific application logic.

1. Test every relevant hostname
Open the apex and www names when both are live, then test API, administrative and media subdomains used by the application. A hosts-file line for example.com does not automatically affect www.example.com.
2. Check the returned content and redirects
- Verify that the page contains the new deployment’s expected code, content, build identifier or maintenance changes.
- Follow redirects and confirm they remain on the intended hostname and scheme.
- Submit representative forms and sign-in flows in a safe test account.
- Inspect browser developer tools for failed API calls, scripts, stylesheets, images and fonts.
- Check cookies for the correct domain, Secure flag and SameSite behavior.
3. Validate HTTPS, certificate and SNI
Open the site with https:// and inspect the certificate. The certificate must match the hostname even though the connection is being sent to a temporary address. TLS Server Name Indication (SNI) and the HTTP Host header are based on the hostname you enter; using only the IP address can select a default site and produce a misleading result.

4. Compare with a direct-IP request when appropriate
For command-line diagnostics, use a tool that can connect to the proposed address while preserving the intended hostname for both HTTP routing and TLS SNI. This lets you distinguish an address-level problem from a browser-cache problem. A plain request to https://203.0.113.10 does not provide the same evidence because certificate and virtual-host selection may differ.
5. Confirm virtual-host routing
A hosts override changes address selection only. It does not rewrite the hostname in links, alter the HTTP Host header, or force TLS SNI when a tool is configured to use a numeric URL. Ensure the server has a site definition for each hostname and that the request lands in that site rather than a default virtual host.

Diagnose a hosts-file change that is not taking effect
The old site appears in every browser
Check the file for spelling, whitespace and an accidental extension, then flush the operating-system resolver cache. Close all browser windows and reopen the browser. If the old address remains, inspect VPN, proxy, enterprise split-DNS and encrypted-DNS settings; any of them can bypass or supersede the normal local lookup path.
One browser changes but another does not
The operating system may already be resolving correctly while one browser retains a host cache or an open connection pool. Clear that browser’s DNS or host cache using its current diagnostic controls, or fully restart it. Compare with a command-line lookup from the same computer.

Those resources may use different hostnames that were not added to the file. Inspect the network panel, list every distinct domain requested, and add only the required names. Also check redirects and application configuration for hard-coded absolute URLs pointing to the old origin.
HTTPS shows a certificate warning
The server may be presenting a default certificate because SNI or virtual-host configuration is wrong, or the certificate may not include the exact hostname. Keep testing with the hostname, configure the new server’s certificate and site binding, and do not treat a certificate warning as a successful migration test.

Command-line and browser results disagree
They may use different resolver stacks, proxies or network namespaces. Record the address each tool receives, then test from the browser’s actual network path. On Linux, review /etc/nsswitch.conf and any local caching daemon; in managed environments, check split-DNS policies.
Hosts file versus public DNS propagation checks

Recursive DNS servers may continue serving a cached record until its TTL expires. cPanel documentation warns that DNS changes may require 48 hours or more to reach all nameservers on the Internet. That is a statement of possible convergence time, not a guarantee that every change always takes exactly two days. Test public resolvers from more than one network after the authoritative change; the local hosts test cannot substitute for that check.
IPv4 and IPv6 considerations
If production publishes both address families, test both. A browser may prefer IPv6, so an IPv4-only hosts line can leave part of the test on the old server or cause a misleading failure. Add the proposed IPv6 address with the same hostnames on a separate line, then verify connectivity over each family where your diagnostic tools allow it.
Do not add an IPv6 mapping merely because the new machine has an address. Use it only when the service, firewall, TLS configuration and application are ready to serve the hostname over IPv6.
Clean up immediately after validation
- Delete the temporary line or prefix it with
#to comment it out. - Save the file while preserving all pre-existing system entries.
- Flush or restart the applicable local resolver cache:
ipconfig /flushdnson Windows,sudo killall -HUP mDNSResponderon macOS, or the appropriateresolvectl/nscdaction on Linux. - Restart browsers and any long-running applications that cache DNS results.
- Perform one final lookup to confirm that the machine now follows normal DNS.
Leaving the line in place can make this computer continue using the test server after production DNS is changed, hiding the real state of the migration and sending you to an obsolete origin.
A practical pre-cutover checklist
- New server responds for every production hostname required by the application.
- HTTPS certificates match each hostname and the correct virtual host is selected.
- Redirects, cookies, authentication, APIs and static assets work on the new origin.
- Both IPv4 and IPv6 paths have been tested when both are intended for production.
- Browser, operating-system and application caches have been considered when results differ.
- The temporary hosts entries are documented and scheduled for removal.
- After the real DNS change, public resolvers from multiple networks are checked until cached answers converge.
The hosts file is the fastest low-risk way to exercise a migration on one machine. Its strength is fidelity: the browser uses the real production hostname while traffic goes to the proposed server. Its boundary is equally important: it says nothing about public DNS propagation, recursive-cache expiry or what another user’s network will resolve.
