The key-shaped icon in an Android status bar means a VPN connection is active. It does not identify the app or provider that made the connection. To find that app, open Settings, search for VPN, and inspect the VPN entry marked active. On phones that use the standard menu, the route is Settings > Network & internet > VPN. Open the matching entry; when the connection was configured by an app, Android can open that app’s controls.
The exact labels and available controls vary by phone maker, Android version, and management policy. Google Fi and Pixel phones can also show a separate VPN by Google control, while a work or school administrator may have installed or restricted a VPN that you cannot change yourself.
What the Android key icon tells you
Android uses the key-shaped status-bar icon as an indication that a VPN is connected. The icon is a connection-status signal, not an app label. It cannot, by itself, distinguish a personally installed VPN app from Google Fi’s VPN by Google or a VPN configured for a work profile.

The reliable way to identify the connection is to inspect Android’s VPN settings and then follow the entry to its associated app, if one exists.

Fastest method: search Settings for VPN
- Open the phone’s Settings app.
- Tap the Settings search field or magnifying-glass button.
- Enter VPN.
- Open the result named VPN, Virtual private network, or a similarly worded result supplied by the phone maker.
- Review the VPN list and look for the entry that shows a connected or active state.
- Tap that entry to inspect its details and available controls. If it was configured through an app, Android may open the corresponding installed app.
Searching is the best general route because Android menu names differ between manufacturers and versions. Google’s Android instructions specifically recommend Settings search when the named menu is not visible.
Standard Android menu path
On devices that expose Google’s standard navigation, open Settings > Network & internet > VPN. The VPN screen lists saved configurations and shows the current connection state. Select the relevant entry to see what Android allows for that configuration, such as opening its app, disconnecting, or forgetting a saved VPN.
Do not assume that every phone will use exactly these labels. A manufacturer may place VPN under a different network submenu, rename a heading, or limit controls under a management policy. If the path is absent, return to Settings search rather than guessing through unrelated network menus.

How to match the active entry to an installed app
Read the name and status together
VPN settings can contain more than one saved entry. The name alone is not enough: compare each name with its connection state and open the entry that is active. An inactive saved profile is not the cause of the key icon at that moment.
Follow an app-based entry
When a VPN was configured by an application, selecting its Android VPN entry can open that application. Check the app’s own connection screen after it opens. The app name, account or profile label, and its on/off control should correspond to the active entry you saw in Settings.

Use the installed-app list as a cross-check
If the VPN entry names an application, look for that exact application in the phone’s installed apps and open it directly. Compare its displayed connection state with Android’s VPN screen. This avoids confusing a saved profile with another app that happens to be installed but is not connected.
Do not install a new VPN merely to identify the existing connection. The key icon already indicates an active VPN; the task is to identify the configuration that Android is reporting.

Check Google Fi’s VPN by Google on a Pixel
Google Fi and Pixel devices can expose VPN by Google as a distinct control. If the key icon appeared while you use Fi, open Settings > Network & internet > VPN > VPN by Google, where that path is available. You can also manage the Fi VPN from the Google Fi app.
Google says that turning on another VPN automatically turns off VPN by Google. Therefore, if Android shows a different VPN entry as active, that other connection is the one associated with the key icon at that time. Check the VPN list rather than inferring the answer from the presence of the Fi app alone.
Pixel 7 and later: the duplicate-profile case
Google Fi documents a narrow case for Pixel 7 and later devices running Android 15 QPR 2 or higher: two profiles named VPN by Google may appear. In that situation, Google’s instructions say to forget the duplicate profile shown under Others. The built-in profile cannot be manually removed.

This is a version-specific Fi behavior, not a general explanation for every Android key icon. If your phone, Android release, or Fi setup does not match those conditions, use the ordinary active-entry identification steps instead.

An organization can configure a VPN for a work profile or manage VPN settings through device administration. The entry may be unfamiliar because it was installed by policy rather than by you. Management can also restrict the ability to disconnect, forget, or edit it.
- Search Settings for VPN and note the exact entry name and whether it is active.
- Check whether the phone displays a work profile or a separate work section in Settings.
- Do not remove a work profile or change management settings simply to test the icon.
- Contact the workplace or school administrator if the entry is unfamiliar, locked, or returns after you disconnect it.
The administrator may be the only person authorized to change that configuration. On an organization-owned device, follow the organization’s support process rather than attempting to bypass the policy.
What to do when the VPN option is missing
Use Settings search first
Search for “VPN” from the top-level Settings screen. Android’s consumer guidance recommends this when the standard Network & internet path is not present.
Account for device and Android-version differences
Menu names and controls can vary by manufacturer, Android version, and management policy. A phone may display a differently named network category or hide controls that are restricted by an administrator. Record the Android version and phone model before asking for help; those details let the manufacturer or administrator give the correct path.

Ask the manufacturer when search still fails
If Settings search produces no VPN result, Google advises asking the device manufacturer. The absence of the familiar path does not prove that no VPN is connected, because the exact menu presentation is not universal.
How to interpret the VPN screen
Several entries are normal
A phone can retain saved VPN profiles even when they are not connected. The active state is the deciding clue. Open each plausible entry only as needed and record which one reports the live connection.
“Open app” is a useful relationship, not a second connection
If selecting an entry launches an app, that action identifies the app associated with the profile. It does not mean that every VPN app installed on the phone is connected. Keep the Android state and the app’s own state aligned when deciding which app caused the icon.
Disconnect and forget are different actions
Disconnect, when available, ends the current session but can leave the saved profile in the list. Forget removes a saved profile from Android, subject to device and administrator restrictions. An app may also retain its own account or configuration after the Android profile is forgotten, so check the app before assuming it has been uninstalled.
Troubleshooting branches
The key icon is present, but no app name is obvious
Return to Settings search, open the VPN list, and inspect every entry’s state. Look for a work-profile indicator or a Google Fi VPN by Google entry. If the list still does not reveal the source, the phone maker’s menu or a management policy may be hiding the relationship; ask the manufacturer or administrator.

The entry is unfamiliar
Do not identify it by the icon alone. Note its exact name, open its details, and check whether Android links it to an installed app or a work profile. If it is managed by an employer or school, contact that organization before changing it.
The entry cannot be disconnected or forgotten
Unavailable controls can indicate an administrator restriction or a configuration owned by an app. Check for a work profile and open the associated app if Android provides that option. If the controls remain locked, the administrator or app owner must provide the change.
VPN by Google and another VPN both appear
Use the active state to determine which connection is in use. Google’s Fi guidance says enabling another VPN automatically turns off VPN by Google. Do not treat the mere presence of both profiles as proof that both are connected.
Two VPN by Google profiles appear on a qualifying Pixel
For Pixel 7 and later on Android 15 QPR 2 or higher, check the profile listed under Others. Google Fi’s instructions say to forget that duplicate while leaving the built-in profile in place. If your device does not meet those version and model conditions, do not apply this specialized fix automatically.
The icon disappears after you change a setting
Reopen the VPN screen and verify which entry is active. A changed icon only tells you that the connection state changed; it does not identify the app without checking the VPN list. If the displayed state and icon do not agree, document the phone model, Android version, VPN entry name, and management status for the manufacturer, app provider, or administrator.
Privacy and safety while identifying the connection
- Use the phone’s built-in Settings and an app already installed on the device; identifying the active VPN does not require downloading another utility.
- Do not share VPN account credentials, work-profile enrollment codes, or screenshots that expose sensitive organization information when requesting help.
- On a managed phone, changing or forgetting a profile can affect access to work or school resources. Ask the administrator first.
- Keep the distinction between an active connection and a saved profile clear. A saved profile can remain listed without causing the key icon.
A repeatable checklist
- Confirm that the status-bar symbol is the key-shaped VPN indicator.
- Open Settings and search for VPN.
- If available, open Network & internet > VPN.
- Read the VPN list and identify the entry marked connected or active.
- Open that entry and follow the link to its app, if Android provides one.
- If you use Google Fi on a Pixel, check VPN by Google in Settings or in the Google Fi app.
- If the phone has a work profile or the entry is locked, contact the organization’s administrator.
- If Settings search cannot find VPN, ask the device manufacturer for the model- and version-specific path.
Bottom line
The Android key icon tells you that a VPN is connected, not which app is responsible. Search Settings for VPN, inspect the active entry, and open its linked app when available. Check VPN by Google separately on Google Fi and Pixel devices, and involve a work or school administrator when the device is managed. Because Android’s labels and controls vary, the active VPN entry—not the icon’s shape—is the authoritative place to identify the connection.
