The reliable way to identify a PlayStation is to read the model number on the console or its box—not to trust a seller’s “Slim,” “Pro,” or “Digital” wording. PS5 numbers start with CFI; PS4 numbers start with CUH. Match the complete number and letter, then confirm the disc drive, storage, region, included accessories, and condition before paying.
Start with the model number, not the product name
Marketplace listings often use “PS5,” “PS5 Slim,” “PS4 Slim,” or “PS4 Pro” loosely. Case shape and promotional photographs can also be misleading because different revisions may share a similar appearance. The model label is the dependable first check.
- PS5: the model number begins with
CFI, followed by numbers and a final letter. - PS4: the model number begins with
CUH, followed by four numbers and a final letter.
Sony’s support pages describe the PS5 format as “The model number consists of the letters CFI, followed by a series of numbers and a letter” and the PS4 format as “The model number consists of the letters CUH, followed by four numbers and a letter.” Read the complete label because the trailing letter and regional suffix can distinguish revisions or market versions.

How to identify a PS5
Find the physical label
- Place the PS5 vertically as Sony shows it in its support instructions.
- Look at the underside of the console for the label beginning with
CFI. - Remove the vertical base if it blocks the label. Do not confuse the base, packaging barcode, or a regulatory label with the model number.
- Record every character, including the final letter and any hyphenated group, and compare it with the seller’s description.
Sony’s illustrated procedure is available in its PS5 serial and model-number guide. The physical model number is the useful purchasing identifier. The serial number identifies the individual machine and should not be posted publicly.
Use the console menu when it powers on
If you can operate the console, open Settings > System > System Software > Console Information. This screen shows the serial number and other system information. Use it as supporting evidence, but still inspect the physical model label: a menu screen does not replace a photograph of the unit being sold, and a seller can show a different console.
What the main PS5 groups indicate
Sony’s setup guidance identifies CFI-2000 as the slim PS5 model group and CFI-7000 as the PS5 Pro model group. Sony’s US Direct catalog currently identifies a standard PS5 listing as CFI-2100 and separately lists Digital Edition and Pro products. Those pages are market- and bundle-specific, so use them to check a particular listing rather than treating a short prefix as a universal SKU decoder.
| Model group | What Sony’s material identifies | What you still need to verify |
|---|---|---|
CFI-1000 |
Earlier PS5 group; the cited drive page does not list it as compatible with the add-on drive. | Whether it is disc or Digital Edition, exact suffix, region, storage, accessories, condition and warranty. |
CFI-2000 |
PS5 slim model group in Sony setup guidance. | Complete suffix, built-in drive or Digital Edition, storage and bundle. |
CFI-2100 |
PS5 slim group shown in Sony’s current US Direct standard-console listing. | Market-specific suffix, drive configuration, included hardware and stock condition. |
CFI-7000 |
PS5 Pro model group in Sony setup guidance. | Complete regional model number, drive status, storage and bundle contents. |
Do not infer every specification from the first four digits. Sony’s manuals and product pages list multiple revisions and regions, and an identical family prefix can appear with different suffixes or packages.
How to tell whether a PS5 has a disc drive
Inspect the actual configuration
A disc-capable PS5 has an optical-drive section in the console’s side profile. A Digital Edition does not have a built-in drive. Ask the seller to photograph both side panels and the label, not just the front of the box. The listing should state whether the drive is built in, absent, or supplied separately.
Storage capacity, color and a bundle name do not by themselves establish disc support. Compare the exact model number and the physical drive opening with the region-specific product page.
When the separate CFI-ZDD1 drive fits
Sony specifies the CFI-ZDD1 Disc Drive for the PS5 Pro and PS5 Digital Edition slim groups identified as CFI-2000 and CFI-2100. Sony also states that an internet connection is required for initial pairing.

| Console identified by the seller | CFI-ZDD1 compatibility established by Sony’s cited page | Buyer action |

Original PS5 Digital Edition, often described as CFI-1000 |
Not listed as compatible on the cited page. | Do not assume the add-on drive will fit; obtain confirmation for the exact model before buying. |
“Digital Edition” alone is therefore insufficient. A seller who cannot provide the complete model group should not be treated as having proved accessory compatibility.
How to identify a PS4
Read the CUH label
PS4 model numbers begin with CUH, then four numbers and a letter. Sony’s PS4 serial and model-number guide identifies three practical family ranges:
| PS4 family range | Sony’s label location | Common identification use |
|---|---|---|
CUH-10xx, CUH-11xx, CUH-12xx |
Lower rear of the chassis. | Earlier/original PS4 families. |
CUH-20xx |
Spine to the right of the power port. | Family commonly sold as PS4 Slim. |
CUH-70xx |
Spine above the system ports. | PS4 Pro family in Sony’s guide. |
These ranges are useful for a first classification, but they are not a complete regional SKU decoder. The final letter, region, storage capacity, included controller, cables and condition still need separate verification.
Check the label on the box and console
For a sealed product, photograph the model label on the original packaging and compare it with the model printed in the listing. For an open or used product, prioritize the console label. Packaging can be swapped, and a box marked “Pro” does not prove that the console inside is the same family.
PS4 Slim versus PS4 Pro: the safe shortcut
When a listing uses only “Slim” or “Pro,” use the CUH family as a cross-check. A CUH-20xx label is the practical clue for the PS4 Slim family, while CUH-70xx is the family Sony identifies as PS4 Pro. The earlier CUH-10xx, CUH-11xx and CUH-12xx ranges are earlier/original PS4 families.
| If the label begins | Reasonable first classification | Do not conclude without checking |
|---|---|---|
CUH-10xx/11xx/12xx |
Earlier/original PS4 family. | Exact revision, storage, region, drive operation and accessories. |
CUH-20xx |
PS4 Slim family. | Whether the seller’s storage, controller and condition claims are accurate. |
CUH-70xx |
PS4 Pro family. | Complete suffix, region, bundle and working ports or disc drive. |
This method identifies the family; it is not a performance or condition test. If the case, box and label disagree, trust neither the shape nor the marketing name until the seller explains the mismatch and provides a photograph of the actual console.
What the model number can—and cannot—tell you
- It can identify: whether the console is in the PS5 CFI or PS4 CUH family and provide a starting point for matching a slim, Pro or earlier group.
- It can help check: whether a proposed accessory, such as the CFI-ZDD1 drive, is listed for that model group.
- It cannot prove: storage capacity, included controller count, cable or stand, game bundle, warranty, repair history, operating condition, seller ownership or that the pictured unit will be shipped.
Keep those categories separate when comparing prices. A lower price may reflect a missing controller or drive rather than a different family, while two consoles with the same family prefix may have different regional suffixes and bundles.

Sony’s official pages establish label formats, family groupings and the cited accessory compatibility. They cannot authenticate a marketplace seller’s item, condition, warranty, storage claim or bundle. Those claims require direct seller evidence.
A reliable buying workflow
For an online listing
- Ask for the complete model number photographed on the actual console or its original box.
- Check that the number starts with
CFIfor PS5 orCUHfor PS4 and that every character is legible. - Match the family to Sony’s support or setup documentation. Use the product page for the same region where possible, such as Sony’s US PS5 catalog.
- Confirm the disc configuration from the console’s side panel and the written description.
- Request a list of storage capacity, controller count, cables, stand, detachable drive and any game bundle.
- Ask whether the photographs show the exact unit, not a manufacturer stock image.
- Confirm seller return terms, warranty coverage, repair history and the market in which the console was purchased.
- Do not request or repost the complete serial number. The model number is enough to identify the family for a purchase decision.
For an in-person purchase
- Read the model label yourself in the locations Sony specifies.
- Compare the label with the box and the seller’s written description. Any mismatch needs an explanation before payment.
- Inspect the drive bay or side panel, ports, seals, controller and cables.
- If possible, power on the console and open Settings > System > System Software > Console Information on PS5 to check system information.
- For a used PS4, test disc insertion and ejection if the unit is advertised as disc-capable, then test video output, USB ports and controller pairing.
- Record the model number and photograph the condition on the receipt or transaction record.
A message you can send to a seller
“Please send a clear photograph of the model label on the actual console, showing the complete CFI or CUH number and final letter. Is the disc drive built in, absent or supplied separately? Please also list the storage capacity, controllers, cables, stand, region, warranty or return terms, and confirm that the photographs show the exact unit.”
This request separates facts that can be checked from labels that are merely promotional. It also gives the seller a chance to disclose a missing drive, swapped packaging or regional warranty limitation before you arrange payment.
Common identification mistakes and how to resolve them
“The case looks like a Slim, so it must be Slim”
Do not classify from shape alone. Ask for the label and use CFI-2000 or CFI-2100 evidence for a slim PS5, or the CUH-20xx family range for a PS4 commonly sold as Slim.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors“Digital Edition means any add-on drive will work”
The CFI-ZDD1 compatibility statement is limited to PS5 Pro and slim Digital Edition groups specified by Sony. Verify the complete model group and remember that initial pairing needs internet access.
“The first four digits are the whole model”
They are a useful family clue, not a universal regional SKU. Record the trailing letter and all suffix characters, then check the applicable country page or manual.

“The serial number proves the listing”
A serial number identifies one machine but does not prove its condition, ownership, warranty status or that the photographed console will be shipped. Keep it private and focus on the model label plus seller evidence.
“A Pro or Slim box guarantees the contents”
Boxes can be reused or bundles can change by market. Verify storage, controller count, cables, stand, drive and promotional items independently.

“Sony’s product page proves this seller is legitimate”
Official specifications describe the product family. They do not authenticate a marketplace listing or establish current inventory, price, warranty or refurbishment quality. Use the seller’s photographs, transaction protections and return terms for those decisions.
The listing shows a model number that the console label does not
Treat this as an unresolved discrepancy, not a harmless typo. Ask for a new photograph of the console label and the box together. If the seller will not explain the difference, do not rely on the listing’s family name or accessory promises.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Regional suffixes and current product pages
PlayStation model suffixes and bundles vary by market. Sony’s support material reviewed here includes regional pages from India, Canada, Singapore and the United States, so a number shown on one country’s page may not map directly to every other country’s retail SKU. Compare the complete number with the official page for the console’s stated market.
Sony’s PS5 setup guidance is the source for the CFI-2000 slim and CFI-7000 Pro group descriptions. The current US Direct pages for the 1 TB PS5 console and the wider catalog show particular US products and bundles, not a promise that every country uses the same suffix, storage or included accessories. Sony’s accessories page is useful for checking the current accessory family, but compatibility still depends on the exact console model.
Final verification checklist
- Model label photographed:
CFIfor PS5 orCUHfor PS4. - Complete number and final letter recorded.
- Family matched to the correct Sony regional documentation.
- Built-in, absent or detachable disc drive confirmed.
- Any CFI-ZDD1 purchase checked against the allowed PS5 Pro or slim Digital Edition groups.
- Storage, controllers, cables, stand and bundle items listed explicitly.
- Region, warranty, repair history, condition and return policy confirmed.
- Photographs show the exact console being sold.
- Serial number kept private.
Once those checks agree, the model number—not the seller’s shorthand—is the strongest evidence of which PlayStation you are buying.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I know which PlayStation model I’m buying?
Read the physical model label. PS5 labels begin with CFI and PS4 labels begin with CUH. Record the complete number and final letter, then compare it with Sony’s documentation for the console’s market. Confirm the drive, storage, bundle and condition separately.
How can I tell if a PS5 is Slim or the original model?
Use the CFI family rather than the case shape. Sony identifies CFI-2000 as the slim group, and current US Direct material also shows CFI-2100 products. Earlier CFI-1000 units are a separate group. Always check the full suffix and configuration.
How do I tell a PS4 Slim from a PS4 Pro?
A CUH-20xx number is the practical clue for the PS4 Slim family, while CUH-70xx is Sony’s PS4 Pro family. CUH-10xx, CUH-11xx and CUH-12xx are earlier families. The label identifies the family; it does not verify storage or condition.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Can I add a disc drive to a PS5 Digital Edition?
Only if the exact group is supported. Sony lists the CFI-ZDD1 drive for PS5 Pro and slim Digital Edition groups CFI-2000 and CFI-2100. Initial pairing requires an internet connection. Do not assume the original CFI-1000 Digital Edition is compatible.
Where is the PS5 model number located?
With the console positioned vertically as Sony illustrates it, look on the underside. Remove the base if it blocks the label. The model begins with CFI. The serial number shown in Settings is a different identifier and should not be posted publicly.
Where is the PS4 model number located?
For CUH-10xx, CUH-11xx and CUH-12xx families, Sony places it at the lower rear. CUH-20xx appears on the spine to the right of the power port, while CUH-70xx appears on the spine above the system ports.
Does the model number tell me the storage or what is in the box?
No. It helps identify the family and revision, but storage, controller count, cables, stand, games, region, warranty and condition must be confirmed from the exact listing, photographs, receipt or system information.
Should I share a console serial number with a seller or online audience?
No. The serial number identifies the individual machine and is unnecessary for the basic buying check. Request the model number and label photograph instead, and keep the full serial number private.
What should I do if the box says Pro but the console label does not match?
Pause the purchase. Boxes can be reused or swapped. Ask for photographs of the console label and box together, compare the complete number with Sony’s regional page, and proceed only when the seller explains the discrepancy.
The Bottom Line
Check the complete CFI or CUH label on the actual console, match it to Sony’s regional documentation, and verify the drive, storage, bundle, region and condition independently. Product names and case shape are clues; the model label is the evidence.
