A DEWALT FLEXVOLT battery is designed to work with DEWALT 20V MAX and 60V MAX tools, and DEWALT also lists 120V MAX tools for compatible FLEXVOLT packs. To check a particular tool, confirm its voltage platform, then match its model and the battery model against the tool manual or DEWALT compatibility information. The compatibility claim runs from FLEXVOLT battery to those tool platforms; it does not mean an ordinary 20V MAX battery will power a 60V MAX tool.

Start with the tool’s voltage platform

Look for the voltage-platform marking on the tool, its product information, or its manual. DEWALT’s US FLEXVOLT system information says FLEXVOLT batteries work with 20V MAX and 60V MAX tools, switching voltage automatically when used with the appropriate platform. DEWALT also identifies 120V MAX tools as compatible with FLEXVOLT batteries. See DEWALT’s FLEXVOLT Battery System information and the DCB612 product page.

Tool marking What DEWALT’s FLEXVOLT compatibility information establishes What to verify
20V MAX FLEXVOLT batteries are described as compatible with DEWALT 20V MAX tools. Check the exact tool and battery model in their manuals or compatibility information.
60V MAX FLEXVOLT batteries are described as compatible with DEWALT 60V MAX tools. Confirm the specific battery and tool models; do not assume the reverse direction works for a 20V MAX battery.
120V MAX DEWALT lists 120V MAX tools as compatible with FLEXVOLT batteries. DEWALT describes 120V MAX as based on combining two 60V MAX lithium-ion batteries. Follow the particular tool’s manual for the required battery arrangement and model compatibility.
Marking unclear or absent The broad platform description alone does not identify the tool’s compatibility. Find the complete model number and consult its current DEWALT manual or compatibility chart before buying or inserting a pack.

The table summarizes DEWALT’s US product and system information; it is not a complete list of every tool model, revision, or regional product. Platform compatibility is a useful first screen, not a substitute for checking the exact model.

Use the marking to narrow the question, not to skip the model check. If a tool is clearly marked 20V MAX or 60V MAX, it falls within the broad platforms DEWALT names for FLEXVOLT batteries. If it is a 120V MAX tool, remember that DEWALT describes that platform as using two 60V MAX batteries together; do not assume that one pack alone is the specified arrangement. The tool manual is the place to confirm the required number and type of batteries for that particular tool.

When the label is difficult to read, use the complete model number rather than guessing from a product family name, the battery socket, or the tool’s appearance. Product pages and manuals can distinguish versions that look alike or share a family name. The model number also gives you a precise term to use when checking the battery compatibility information.

Verify the exact tool and battery models

  1. Find the tool model number. Use the marking on the tool or the model information in its documentation. A family name or a voltage label may not be enough to resolve a model-specific question.
  2. Identify the battery model. Read the model designation on the pack. FLEXVOLT examples on DEWALT’s US pages include DCB606, DCB609, DCB612, and DCB615; DEWALT’s FLEXVOLT battery product information includes these model examples.
  3. Check the tool manual or compatibility chart. Search the documentation for the exact tool model and battery guidance. DEWALT’s manuals can contain model-specific operating and compatibility instructions; for example, its DCW600B instruction manual describes FLEXVOLT operating mode.
  4. Confirm the direction of compatibility. Make sure the documentation supports the battery you have in the tool you have. A statement that a FLEXVOLT battery works in a 60V MAX tool does not establish that every 20V MAX pack works in that tool.
  5. Check the charger separately if you are also buying or using one. Charger compatibility is a separate question from whether the battery fits the tool. Use the charger’s own manual and compatibility chart.

If the model-specific documentation does not clearly resolve the combination, do not rely on the battery’s Ah rating, appearance, or a general platform description as proof. Confirm the pairing using DEWALT’s current documentation before use.

A useful way to make the check is to write down the two model numbers together before searching: the tool model and the FLEXVOLT battery model. Then check the tool’s documentation first, since that is where the tool-specific battery instructions belong. If the manual refers to a compatibility chart, use that chart rather than assuming that another tool in the same platform or product family has identical instructions. A general FLEXVOLT system description explains the platform rule; the exact manual addresses the particular product.

For example, if a tool is labeled 60V MAX and the pack is marked DCB609, the platform marking tells you that FLEXVOLT-to-60V MAX is within DEWALT’s broad compatibility statement. The model check still matters: look up that tool and pack in the relevant documentation. This is a method example, not a claim that every individual product revision has been separately verified here. The same logic applies to a 20V MAX tool paired with a DCB606, DCB612, or DCB615: use the platform as an initial check, then confirm the exact combination.

Do not treat a physically fitting pack as proof of compatibility. The relevant evidence is the battery and tool model guidance, not just whether the pack can be placed in the tool. Likewise, an Ah capacity is not a compatibility code. A 6Ah, 9Ah, 12Ah, or 15Ah rating helps identify a particular FLEXVOLT product’s capacity, but does not replace the documentation check.

What FLEXVOLT’s automatic voltage change means

DEWALT says FLEXVOLT batteries change voltage automatically when moved between compatible tools. In practical terms, a FLEXVOLT pack is the battery family intended to serve the listed DEWALT voltage platforms; the tool’s platform determines the relevant operating mode. This automatic change does not make the battery universally compatible with every DEWALT cordless tool, nor does it turn a one-way compatibility statement into a promise that batteries from another platform work in FLEXVOLT tools.

Keep the direction straight: the supported claim is that FLEXVOLT batteries work with the named DEWALT tool platforms. If you own a 20V MAX battery and are considering a 60V MAX tool, verify that exact battery and tool combination in the tool documentation rather than inferring compatibility from FLEXVOLT’s ability to work across platforms.

This distinction is easy to miss because the words “20V MAX” appear in descriptions of both some tools and FLEXVOLT batteries. The important question is not whether the numbers appear somewhere on both products; it is whether DEWALT identifies the particular battery as appropriate for the particular tool. DEWALT’s statement about a FLEXVOLT battery working with a 20V MAX tool is not a general two-way rule for all 20V MAX and 60V MAX batteries.

Automatic voltage change is also not a reason to assume that a FLEXVOLT battery will work in every cordless tool DEWALT has made. The stated compatibility covers named platforms, and model-specific documentation remains the final check. If a tool’s platform is not clear, or its manual does not settle the pairing, do not extrapolate from another tool or from the battery’s automatic operation on a different platform.

FLEXVOLT battery model examples and capacities

These DEWALT US product examples illustrate battery models and their stated capacities. Capacity is useful when comparing runtime-oriented product options, but it is not a compatibility test: a higher Ah number does not by itself establish that a pack is supported by a particular tool.

On its DCB612 product page, DEWALT claims up to six times the runtime compared with a DCB201 1.5Ah battery pack when used with DEWALT 20V MAX tools. That is a manufacturer claim tied to that specific comparison, not a general promise for every tool, battery, or working condition. The runtime comparison does not answer whether a particular battery and tool model are compatible.

For a reader choosing among FLEXVOLT models, the model designation and stated capacity answer different questions. The model designation identifies which pack you are checking against the tool manual. The Ah figure is a capacity specification that can help compare products for runtime-oriented selection. Neither the highest Ah value nor the largest-looking pack automatically makes a tool pairing compatible. Check the tool documentation for that pairing before treating capacity as a reason to purchase.

The six-times-runtime statement should also be read narrowly. DEWALT compares the DCB612 with the DCB201 1.5Ah pack in DEWALT 20V MAX tools. It is not a universal estimate for a 60V MAX tool, a 120V MAX tool, every application, or every working condition. It may be useful as a manufacturer’s product comparison, but it is not a substitute for a model match or a promise of a specific number of minutes of work.

The listed DCB606, DCB609, DCB612, and DCB615 models are examples documented on DEWALT’s US pages, not an exhaustive inventory. Product selection, availability, specifications, and regional naming can change. If the pack in hand has a different model designation, use its own DEWALT product page and manual rather than assuming the examples cover it.

Check charger compatibility independently

Tool compatibility and charger compatibility are separate checks. DEWALT states on the DCB612 product page that the battery works with all 20V MAX chargers. The DCB118 charger manual identifies 20V MAX lithium-ion and FLEXVOLT packs as supported, and directs users to its compatibility chart. Consult the instructions for your exact charger rather than assuming the DCB118 information applies to a different charger model. The DCB118 instruction manual is the source for that charger’s guidance.

If you are checking a complete setup, treat it as two separate pairings: battery-to-tool and battery-to-charger. A pack’s compatibility with a tool does not, by itself, identify a compatible charger. Find the charger’s model number and look for the battery types covered in its instructions. For the DCB118 specifically, DEWALT’s manual provides a compatibility chart; follow that chart and the manual’s instructions instead of relying on a general statement about another charger.

DEWALT’s DCB612 product page says that model works with all 20V MAX chargers, which is useful when considering that battery and charger combination. Still, check the charger instructions for the charger you actually own and the pack you intend to charge. This matters especially if you have a different FLEXVOLT model or a charger whose documentation is not the DCB118 manual. Do not infer charger support solely from the tool platform.

Common compatibility mistakes to avoid

  • Reversing the compatibility direction: FLEXVOLT support for a 60V MAX tool does not prove that a standard 20V MAX battery will operate it.
  • Using the voltage label as the only check: The platform narrows the answer, but the model-specific manual or chart is the appropriate check for an individual tool and pack.
  • Treating Ah as a fit indicator: The capacity number describes the battery product; it does not establish platform or model compatibility.
  • Assuming a charger is compatible because the tool is: Check the charger’s own model-specific documentation.
  • Applying US naming or product information everywhere: The referenced DEWALT pages are US pages. Product names and availability may differ by region, so use documentation for the product sold in your market.

Another common mistake is to treat a general platform statement as a complete tool list. DEWALT’s system information gives the broad 20V MAX and 60V MAX rule, while its DCB612 page also names 120V MAX compatibility. Those statements do not enumerate every tool model, revision, or regional version. If your question is about a specific tool, the model number and its current manual are more useful than a search result that merely repeats the platform name.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

It is also easy to conflate charging with operation. A charger compatibility statement tells you about charging a battery; it does not establish that the battery is suitable for a particular tool. Conversely, a tool platform compatibility statement does not tell you which charger to use. Keep the two checks separate and consult the appropriate manual for each device.

If you cannot confirm a combination

Pause before buying or inserting the battery. Note the full tool model and battery model, then consult the current manual or DEWALT compatibility information for that pairing. If the exact match is not stated clearly, seek confirmation from DEWALT or an authorized service channel instead of extrapolating from another tool in the same family. A broad claim about the FLEXVOLT system is not a substitute for model-specific confirmation.

When you contact DEWALT or an authorized service channel, provide both model numbers rather than only saying “a 60V tool” or “a FLEXVOLT battery.” Include the charger model too if your question concerns charging. This makes clear whether you need an answer about tool operation, charging, or both. Keep the product documentation alongside the model numbers so you can compare the answer with the applicable instructions.

Finally, remember that the named product examples and pages are DEWALT US information. A tool or battery sold under a different regional designation may have different documentation or availability. Use the manual and product information for the market where the product is sold, and do not treat a similar-looking product name as confirmation of the same exact model.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which DEWALT tools are compatible with a FLEXVOLT battery?

DEWALT says FLEXVOLT batteries work with DEWALT 20V MAX and 60V MAX tools. DEWALT also lists 120V MAX tools; that platform is based on two 60V MAX batteries combined. Check the exact tool and battery models in their documentation.

Can I use a regular 20V MAX battery in a 60V MAX tool?

Do not assume so. DEWALT’s stated compatibility is that FLEXVOLT batteries work with the named tool platforms; it does not establish the reverse direction for an ordinary 20V MAX battery. Check the exact tool manual and compatibility information.

Does a FLEXVOLT battery change voltage automatically?

DEWALT says FLEXVOLT batteries change voltage automatically when moved between compatible tools. This does not make them universally compatible with every DEWALT cordless tool; verify the tool and battery models.

Will a FLEXVOLT battery charge in a 20V MAX charger?

DEWALT says the DCB612 works with all 20V MAX chargers. The DCB118 manual also identifies 20V MAX lithium-ion and FLEXVOLT packs as supported and points users to its compatibility chart. Check the instructions for your exact battery and charger models.

Do the 6Ah, 9Ah, 12Ah, or 15Ah ratings tell me whether a battery fits?

No. DEWALT lists DCB606 at 6Ah, DCB609 at 9Ah, DCB612 at 12Ah, and DCB615 at 15Ah, but capacity is not a compatibility test. Match the battery and tool models against DEWALT documentation.

Is a 120V MAX DEWALT tool powered by one FLEXVOLT battery?

DEWALT describes 120V MAX as based on combining two 60V MAX lithium-ion batteries. Follow the specific tool manual for its required battery arrangement and compatible models.

The Bottom Line

DEWALT says FLEXVOLT batteries are compatible with its 20V MAX and 60V MAX tools, and it also lists 120V MAX tools. Use the tool’s voltage marking as a first check, then verify the exact tool, battery, and—if needed—charger models in their current manuals or compatibility information. FLEXVOLT-to-tool compatibility is not proof that a standard 20V MAX battery works in a 60V MAX tool.
