A 5xx error does not prove your hosting provider is responsible. To narrow down where a website failure occurs, record the error and time, compare the normal public route with a direct-to-origin request when possible, and check logs along the request path. The results can support a clear, reproducible support request without confusing an observed failure with proof of who caused it.
Record the failure before changing anything
Capture enough detail for someone else to reproduce the problem. A screenshot can help, but preserve the response itself: command output, status code, response headers and error text. Cloudflare recommends including the exact 5xx code or message, URL, time and timezone when contacting a hosting provider (Cloudflare 5xx errors).
- URL: Record the full URL, including the path, and note whether the issue affects one page or several.
- Time: Include the date, time and timezone for each attempt.
- Response: Save the HTTP status, message and headers. Note whether the page came from your origin or an intermediary if that is identifiable.
- Reproducibility: Record whether repeated requests fail consistently or intermittently.
A 5xx status describes a server-side failure observed during a request; it does not, by itself, identify which component caused it. The origin application, web server, hosting infrastructure, or an intermediary may be involved.

Compare the public route with the origin
Make one request through the site’s usual public URL, then—if your deployment allows it—make a comparable request directly to the origin, bypassing the CDN or proxy. Cloudflare documents using curl for this comparison and recommends contacting the hosting provider if the problem also occurs on a direct-origin connection (Gathering information for troubleshooting sites).

For example, a basic public-route request is:
curl -sS -D - -o /dev/null -w 'nHTTP %{http_code}n' https://example.com/pathFor a direct-origin comparison, Cloudflare’s documented method uses curl --resolve so the request connects to a specified origin IP while retaining the hostname in the URL. Replace the example hostname, IP address and path with values for your setup:
curl -sS -D - -o /dev/null -w 'nHTTP %{http_code}n'
--resolve example.com:443:203.0.113.10
https://example.com/pathUse the actual origin address and the correct hostname and TLS behavior for your deployment. Some sites deliberately do not expose an origin for direct access; do not treat an unavailable direct test as evidence that the host is down. curl shows the HTTP response and headers without browser rendering, but it does not execute JavaScript or reproduce all browser behavior.

Read the two results as a comparison

Compare the status, message and headers as well as whether each request succeeds. Cloudflare’s troubleshooting guidance also covers inspecting request timing. A browser-versus-curl difference can point toward rendering or client-side behavior, but it does not by itself identify the underlying cause.

Trace errors through the request path
Check logs for the components that actually handle traffic in your setup. The origin server’s error log may not contain the explanation: Cloudflare’s support documentation notes, “The cause of the error is not always found in the origin server’s error logs.” Where present, inspect load balancer, cache, proxy and firewall logs as well as origin and application logs (Cloudflare 5xx errors).

If your site uses Cloudflare, inspect cf-error-type and cf-error-origin when they are present. Cloudflare says these diagnostic headers appear on error pages it generates, rather than errors it forwards from the origin. Its documented categories include DNS or routing problems, Workers exceptions or resource limits, and origin connectivity issues (Cloudflare error diagnostic headers). Treat these headers as clues about the reported error path, not as a universal diagnosis for sites that do not use Cloudflare.
Cloudflare Error Analytics can group errors by code and show related URLs, source IPs and Cloudflare data centers. Its analytics use a 1% traffic sample, according to Cloudflare’s 2026 documentation, so the view is useful for spotting patterns but is not a complete ledger of every request (Cloudflare 5xx errors).

Use external checks as another viewpoint
An external uptime check can show whether a basic request succeeds from outside your own network. Google Cloud documents public uptime checks that periodically send HTTP, HTTPS or TCP requests from multiple locations (Create public uptime checks). A passing check has limits: these checks do not load page assets or execute JavaScript, and default checks do not authenticate. A green result therefore does not establish that the full site works for every visitor or for logged-in users.

Send your hosting provider a concise, reproducible report. Include the affected URLs, exact responses, timestamps with timezone, and results from both the normal public route and the direct-origin route if available. Attach relevant response headers and log excerpts, and ask the provider to check origin reachability and the infrastructure logs for the reported times. If the failure appears only on the public route, include the evidence and investigate the proxy, CDN, DNS, routing, TLS, cache or firewall path with the relevant service operator.

The strongest useful conclusion is specific: what you requested, when and from where, what each route returned, and which logs or diagnostic signals support the likely fault domain. That gives support teams something actionable to investigate without claiming more than the tests establish.
