Do not assume that a VPN protects against malware simply because it encrypts your connection. Open your VPN account or app, identify the exact plan and security feature, then verify what it actually does: block dangerous domains, inspect URLs, scan downloaded files, quarantine threats, or monitor applications. Also check whether it works only while the VPN tunnel is active, which operating systems and app versions support it, and whether browser or custom DNS settings can bypass it.
A VPN add-on can reduce exposure to malicious websites, but it is not automatically a replacement for endpoint antivirus. The distinction between network filtering and local file scanning is the key to evaluating your subscription.
What “malware protection” can mean in a VPN
VPN encryption and malware protection address different problems. A VPN normally encrypts traffic between your device and a VPN server and replaces your visible IP address. Those functions do not, by themselves, inspect downloaded files or determine whether a program is malicious.

- DNS or domain filtering: the provider’s resolver refuses requests for domains on an unsafe-site list. This can stop a browser from reaching a known malicious or phishing domain.
- URL or browser protection: an app or extension evaluates a web address or browsing event and blocks a suspicious page.
- Download scanning: the VPN application examines a downloaded file and reports or blocks a detected threat.
- Quarantine or deletion: a detected file is isolated or removed rather than left in the downloads folder.
- Application or vulnerability checks: the software looks for risky installed applications or outdated components.
These layers are not interchangeable. DNS filtering can prevent a connection to a listed domain, but it does not inspect every file already stored on your device. A provider’s statement that it blocks “malware sites” therefore does not establish that it scans downloads.
Read the provider’s technical description for explicit terms such as “scans downloaded files,” “quarantines,” “deletes infected files,” or “checks installed apps.” Treat those as documented capabilities, not a guarantee that every malicious object will be detected.
Seven checks that reveal what your subscription includes

Identify the exact plan
Open the provider’s account dashboard, billing page, or the subscription screen in the app. Record the plan name exactly as shown. Security features are often limited to higher tiers. For example, Norton lists its Malware Protection feature for VPN Plus and VPN Ultimate users. Do not infer eligibility from the provider’s general VPN landing page.

Use the feature name shown in your app
Search the provider’s current support documentation for the exact label. Names can change during a rollout. NordVPN’s support documentation says its former “Threat Protection Pro” is now called “Scam, phishing, and malware protection,” while “Threat Protection” is now “Scam and phishing protection.” An older app may still display the previous wording, so search both names if necessary.

Look for concrete actions, not broad marketing terms
“Blocks malicious domains” or “DNS filtering” describes domain-level protection. “Real-time malicious URL blocking” describes URL inspection. “Scans downloads,” “quarantines files,” or “deletes infected files” indicates a file-level claim. If the page only says that the VPN is secure or private, it has not established malware scanning.

Check the connection requirement
Find out whether the feature works only when the VPN tunnel is connected. DNS filtering normally depends on DNS requests being sent to the provider’s filtering resolver. NordVPN distinguishes its DNS-based Scam and phishing protection, which generally requires traffic to pass through a NordVPN server, from its application-layer Scam, phishing, and malware protection, which the provider says can work while the VPN is disconnected. Similar names can describe different behavior, so verify the exact feature.

Confirm operating system and app coverage
Read the compatibility section for your operating system, minimum version, app source, and device type. A feature may exist on Windows but not on mobile, or in a downloaded desktop app but not in a Mac App Store version. Browser extensions can have a separate support list.

Review DNS and browser settings
Custom DNS settings and browser-level encrypted DNS can change which resolver handles a request. Mozilla says Firefox DNS-over-HTTPS takes priority over the resolver configured in the Mozilla VPN application for Firefox. If filtering appears inactive, check the browser’s secure-DNS setting, the operating system’s DNS configuration, and any network-wide DNS service.

Keep endpoint protection enabled
Unless you have a documented, tested reason to change your security setup, leave your operating system’s endpoint protection or a separate antivirus product active. AV-TEST’s November 2024 report states: “While these features are not a substitute for traditional antivirus solutions, they can provide additional protection when accessing the Internet.”
How to distinguish filtering from real file scanning

Proton describes NetShield as DNS filtering that protects from malware and blocks ads and trackers. That description supports domain filtering; it does not say that NetShield scans local downloads. NordVPN’s narrower Scam and phishing protection is likewise described as DNS-based. By contrast, NordVPN documents download scanning and quarantine for its more extensive application-layer feature on supported platforms.

Provider examples and the caveats attached to them

These are provider descriptions, not a universal definition of VPN malware protection. A feature name can cover different technical layers across products, and a single provider can offer multiple layers under similar names.
Connection state: what works when the VPN is off?
Test the connection requirement explicitly. Disconnect the VPN and observe whether the provider’s security component remains enabled, then reconnect and compare. Do not treat a desktop notification or an always-visible menu item as proof that filtering is active.
DNS-based protection usually depends on the provider’s resolver receiving your DNS requests. If the VPN tunnel is off, those requests may go to your router, internet provider, or custom DNS service instead. NordVPN says its DNS-based Scam and phishing protection generally needs traffic routed through a NordVPN server, while its application-layer Scam, phishing, and malware protection can operate without the tunnel. The distinction is feature-specific, not a general rule for all VPNs.
On mobile devices, behavior can differ because an app may use a local filtering component or a system VPN profile even when the full tunnel is not connected. NordVPN’s support page notes a mobile exception for its narrower protection feature. Verify the exact operating system and app version rather than extending desktop behavior to a phone.
Device, app-version, and app-store checks
Feature availability can change with the operating system and distribution channel. Use this checklist before concluding that your VPN lacks malware protection:

- Confirm the operating system name and version, such as Windows 10, Windows 11, or macOS 12 or newer.
- Record the VPN application version and update it from the provider’s official source.
- Check whether you installed a direct-download desktop app, an app-store build, a browser extension, or a mobile app.
- Read the provider’s minimum-version and supported-device notes for the exact feature.
- Check whether the feature is enabled separately in settings after installation.
- Look for regional or staged-rollout notes in the provider’s support article.
NordVPN’s documentation illustrates why the app source matters: its more extensive protection feature is listed for the sideloaded Mac app, while the Mac App Store variant is excluded. A missing toggle in one app variant does not prove that the provider never offers the capability.
DNS-over-HTTPS and custom DNS can change the result
Filtering only applies if the relevant DNS requests pass through the filtering resolver. A custom DNS address configured in the operating system or router can bypass a VPN’s DNS service. A browser can also select its own encrypted resolver.
Mozilla’s support documentation, updated July 15, 2025, says Firefox DNS-over-HTTPS takes priority over the resolver configured in the Mozilla VPN application for Firefox. If you expect VPN-provided domain blocking in Firefox, inspect Settings → Privacy & Security → DNS over HTTPS and note whether a custom provider is selected. Other browsers have comparable secure-DNS controls with different labels.
When troubleshooting, temporarily return DNS to the provider’s automatic setting, reconnect the VPN, and test again. If protection returns, the earlier resolver choice—not the VPN subscription—was determining which filtering service handled the request.
A practical verification procedure
- Write down the plan and account owner. Use the billing or subscription page, not a remembered plan name.
- Open the feature settings. Look for a security, threat, web protection, or malware section and record the exact label and enabled state.
- Read the provider’s support article. Match the label, platform, app version, and connection requirement.
- Classify the protection layer. Mark it as DNS/domain filtering, URL protection, download scanning, quarantine, application checks, or a combination.
- Check the tunnel state. Determine whether the documented layer remains active while disconnected.
- Check resolver ownership. Review operating-system DNS, router DNS, browser DNS-over-HTTPS, and any security software that may intercept requests.
- Confirm a safe test result. Use the provider’s own diagnostic or test page if one exists. Do not download live malware to test a security product.
- Keep endpoint protection running. Continue using traditional antivirus or built-in endpoint security unless independent documentation supports a different arrangement.
Troubleshooting when protection appears inactive

How much confidence should you place in VPN malware claims?
Give the greatest weight to current technical support documentation that identifies the inspection layer, supported platforms, and connection state. A broad marketing sentence is weaker evidence than a page explaining exactly where files are scanned and how quarantine works.

Independent testing can provide context, but it must match the feature being evaluated. AV-TEST’s November 2024 report on additional VPN security features says its evaluation did not focus on core VPN functionality. AV-TEST sourced the sample URLs and metadata itself and pre-verified them as known malicious or phishing sites. The report describes a database containing “more than 1.35 billion malware objects”; that is the database description at publication, not a current real-time malware count.
The report does not establish that every VPN feature catches every sample or that one provider’s DNS filter is equivalent to another provider’s download scanner. Avoid turning provider-reported percentages into a cross-provider benchmark unless an independent test used the same samples, versions, settings, and dates.
VPN protection versus traditional antivirus
A VPN security add-on is most useful as an additional barrier against known malicious websites, phishing links, and—in some products—dangerous downloads. Traditional endpoint antivirus operates locally and can monitor files, processes, scripts, removable media, and system behavior beyond the network request that delivered them.

If the provider documents download scanning or quarantine, you have an additional local inspection layer, but it still does not establish complete antivirus coverage. AV-TEST explicitly describes VPN security features as supplementary rather than replacement protection.
A comparison framework for two VPN subscriptions
If you are deciding whether an existing VPN includes the protection you need, compare the products on the same six axes:
- Protection type: list DNS/domain filtering, malicious-URL blocking, download scanning, quarantine, and application-vulnerability checks separately.
- Connection requirement: record whether each layer needs an active VPN tunnel.
- Coverage: note operating systems, minimum versions, browser extensions, mobile limitations, and app-store exclusions.
- Subscription tier: identify the exact named plan and any separate activation step.
- DNS interaction: determine whether custom DNS or browser DNS-over-HTTPS can supersede the provider’s resolver.
- Evidence quality: distinguish current support documentation from general marketing language and from independent testing that actually covers the feature.
This prevents a common mistake: selecting a VPN because it advertises “malware protection” when the included tool only blocks a list of unsafe domains, while overlooking a separate plan or app requirement for file scanning.
Bottom line: how to answer the question for your own VPN
Your VPN includes meaningful malware protection only to the extent that its current plan and app explicitly document the relevant layer. Confirm the plan, feature name, platform, app version, connection state, and DNS path. “DNS filtering” or “blocks malicious sites” means domain-level protection; “scans downloads” and “quarantines files” are the stronger, file-level claims you must look for. Keep traditional endpoint antivirus in place because VPN security features add protection but do not automatically replace it.
