Check Settings > Connections > More connection settings > Network unlock > Network lock status if that option is available on your Samsung Galaxy. Then, if possible, test with an active SIM from another carrier. A request for a network unlock code is a strong sign the phone is locked; a failed call by itself is not proof. For a definitive status and eligibility requirements, contact the carrier or retailer that supplied the phone.
Check the network-lock status in Settings
- Open Settings.
- Tap Connections, then More connection settings.
- Tap Network unlock, then Network lock status, if those options appear.
On supported configurations, this menu shows network-lock status and may also offer Permanent unlock or Temporary unlock. Samsung notes that the available options depend on the carrier; the menu or its path may differ by device and software version. If you cannot find it, that alone does not establish whether the phone is locked. See Samsung’s guide to Galaxy connection options.
Test with another carrier’s SIM
If you can use an active SIM from a different carrier, insert it and see whether the phone recognizes the line and connects. A prompt asking for a network unlock code is evidence that the handset is restricted to a network. If the phone connects and can place a call, that is a practical indication it can use that line, though it does not settle every question about compatibility with other services or networks.

A failed call or a no-service message is inconclusive: the SIM might not be active or recognized, coverage may be unavailable, or carrier settings and device compatibility may be involved. Samsung’s guidance on SIM PIN and network-unlock prompts distinguishes the two kinds of code.

How the two checks differ

Rule out SIM and connection problems
If the alternate SIM does not work, first check whether it is active and whether the phone recognizes it. Samsung lists missing or inactive SIM/eSIM service, SIM damage, and carrier-related settings among possible causes of connection problems. On supported devices, check Settings > About phone > Status information > SIM card status and see whether a carrier name appears. Network lock and SIM PIN are different
A SIM PIN protects the SIM card itself. A network lock restricts which provider’s network the handset can use. A SIM asking for its PIN does not by itself mean the phone is network-locked. Samsung UK explains that it does not lock its devices to a particular network, while noting that carrier policies and unlocking requirements are handled by the provider. Confirm unlock eligibility before switching
Contact the carrier or retailer that supplied the Galaxy to confirm its lock status and the provider’s current eligibility rules. Samsung says requirements vary by carrier and are not set by Samsung; its guide to moving a Galaxy phone to another service carrier directs customers to the carrier for those requirements. If you are planning to switch, confirm before deactivating your existing service.
