The quickest way to separate a service outage from a connection problem is to test scope: open several unrelated websites. If many fail, investigate your Wi-Fi, Ethernet, router, modem, or internet provider. If only one service fails, check that service’s official status page and test it from another device or network. This is a strong first clue, not proof; a browser, device, DNS, routing problem, or regional incident can make either pattern misleading.
Start with the five-minute triage
Work from the least disruptive checks to the more technical ones. Do not change DNS, reset network settings, or reinstall a browser before you know whether the problem is isolated or widespread; those changes can remove useful evidence.
1. Confirm the address and reload once
Read the address in the browser’s address bar carefully. A mistyped subdomain, an extra character, or an old bookmark can look like an outage. Navigate to the service’s normal home address rather than following a stale link, then reload once.

2. Test unrelated websites
Open several sites that are unrelated to the service in question. The comparison matters more than the number of sites: choose destinations operated by different organizations so that one shared provider problem does not create a false pattern.
| Observation | What it suggests | What it does not prove |
|---|---|---|
| Only one service fails while unrelated sites load | A service-specific incident, a problem on that service’s route, or a browser/device issue | That the service is down for every user |
| Several unrelated sites fail | A local connection, Wi-Fi/Ethernet, router, modem, or ISP problem deserves priority | That the service itself is healthy |
| Some sites load and others time out | A selective routing, DNS, filtering, or regional problem may be involved | That either your ISP or the service is solely responsible |
Google Chrome Help gives the practical rule: “If the issue affects multiple websites, check your internet connection.” Treat it as a triage shortcut, not a universal diagnosis.
3. Check the device’s connection
- For Wi-Fi, confirm that the device is connected to the intended network rather than a weak or unfamiliar one.
- For Ethernet, check that the cable is seated and that the device shows a wired connection.
- Look at the modem and router. Status lights that indicate loss of service, restarting, or a disconnected link are useful clues, although light meanings differ by model.
- On public Wi-Fi, open a new browser tab and look for a sign-in or acceptance page. Until that portal is completed, ordinary websites may appear unreachable.
If the device has lost its network connection, reconnect it before changing browser settings. If another device on the same network has the same problem, the network path becomes more likely than a single browser tab.
4. Check the affected service’s official status page
Use the service’s own incident or status page, if it publishes one. Look for an active incident, maintenance notice, affected component, region, and the time of the latest update. A clear entry is useful corroborating evidence.

Status pages have a defined scope. A provider page reports that provider’s systems and infrastructure; it cannot establish that every unrelated website is reachable. Conversely, a page showing “operational” does not prove that the service is reachable from your location, device, ISP, or browser. Regional failures, account-specific problems, and newly developing incidents can exist before a notice appears.
5. Compare another device or connection
If available, try the same service from a second device on the same network. Then try a different network, such as cellular data or another trusted connection. These comparisons are diagnostic aids, not a universal test protocol.
| Result | Most useful interpretation |
|---|---|
| Fails on every tested device and network | A broad service incident is more plausible, especially if the official status page reports one. |
| Works on another device on the same network | Investigate the original device, browser, account, or local security software. |
| Works on another network but not your usual one | Investigate the usual Wi-Fi, router, ISP route, or network policy. |
| Works on neither device but unrelated sites also fail | Prioritize the local network and ISP checks. |
6. Restart equipment only after recording the pattern
For a persistent multi-site failure, restart the modem and router if that is an ordinary step for your equipment. Record which sites failed and whether other devices were affected first; a restart can temporarily clear evidence. If multiple sites remain unavailable after the device and network checks, contact your existing internet provider.
Use the pattern to choose the next branch
One service fails, everything else works
Check the service’s official status information, then retry from another device or network. If the service works elsewhere, focus on the original browser, device, account, or connection path. If it fails everywhere and the status page reports an incident, waiting for the provider’s recovery may be the appropriate action. If no incident is listed, keep the result qualified: the absence of a notice is not proof of universal availability.

Several unrelated services fail
Start with Wi-Fi or Ethernet status, modem/router indicators, and any public-network login page. Test another device on the same network. If the same broad failure persists, restart network equipment when appropriate and contact the ISP. Give the provider the approximate start time, affected devices, connection type, and examples of unrelated destinations that failed.
Only one device is affected
A second device on the same network that loads the service shifts attention toward the original device. Check that the browser is online, retry in a private window or another installed browser, and review device-level security or filtering only if those are already part of your setup. Do not infer a provider outage from a failure confined to one machine.
Pages partly load or render incorrectly
A page that displays text but lacks styles, scripts, images, or interactive controls is different from a total connection timeout. Record which parts are missing and whether a hard reload changes the result. The service may be reachable while one supporting component, route, cache, or browser request is failing. This symptom is especially useful when reporting a problem because it identifies more than “the site is down.”
HTTP errors, slow responses, and timeouts
An HTTP error means the browser received a response from somewhere in the request path; a timeout means a response was not received within the relevant limit. Slow responses can occur even when a service is technically reachable. Capture the exact status code or browser message, the time, and whether the result changes on another network. Different symptoms call for different support diagnostics, so avoid treating every message as the same outage.

How to read an official status page without overinterpreting it
Prefer the affected service’s own status system over an unverified third-party outage report. Independent reports can be clues, but they do not conclusively establish that a service is unavailable for everyone, and their collection methods may be opaque.
On an official page, distinguish among:
- Incident: an active disruption that the provider is investigating or mitigating.
- Maintenance: planned work with a stated or implied window; some maintenance affects only particular features or regions.
- Component status: a green overall banner can coexist with a failure in one product, endpoint, login system, or geographic area.
- Location information: a provider may identify affected regions or data centers, which helps explain why another network works.
- Status feeds and notifications: useful for updates, but still limited to the provider publishing them.
Cloudflare’s status documentation illustrates this provider-specific model: its page and feeds describe Cloudflare services, not the health of every website that uses the internet. Google’s status-dashboard explanations likewise apply to Google Search systems within their stated scope.
Compare connection paths deliberately
Changing one variable at a time produces a more useful result than trying several fixes simultaneously. Keep the service, device, and time consistent while you switch the connection, or keep the network consistent while you switch the device.

| Comparison | How to perform it | What to record |
|---|---|---|
| Same device, Wi-Fi versus Ethernet | Use an existing compatible wired port and cable if available; Ethernet is optional, not a required purchase. | Whether the service and unrelated sites change from failing to loading. |
| Same device, usual network versus another network | Use another trusted connection or cellular data where permitted. | Whether only the usual network fails. |
| Same network, device A versus device B | Open the same service and unrelated sites on both devices. | Whether the fault follows the device or remains network-wide. |
| Same service, normal browser versus another browser | Use a second installed browser or a private window as a comparison. | Whether the symptom is browser-specific. |
These tests narrow possibilities; they do not identify a single cause in every case. For example, two devices can share a DNS or filtering problem, while a service can fail only for one region even when other networks work.

Advanced diagnostics for support cases
Command-line tools and browser captures are most valuable when a support technician needs evidence beyond a screenshot. Use them after the basic scope and comparison checks, or when support specifically asks for them.
HAR capture
A HAR (HTTP Archive) records browser requests and responses while you reproduce a problem. It can show which request failed, the response status, timing, redirects, and supporting assets. Because a HAR can contain cookies, authorization headers, account identifiers, search terms, and full URLs, inspect and sanitize it before sharing. Never upload an unsanitized capture to a public forum.
curl
curl can inspect an HTTP response and timing without relying on the browser’s rendering layer. A support request may ask you to run a header check such as curl -I https://<service-hostname> or a timing-oriented request. Replace the angle-bracketed value with the actual hostname only in your terminal; do not paste credentials or private tokens. Save the command output with its timestamp and note which network you used.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsTraceroute and MTR
traceroute (called tracert on Windows) and MTR examine the network path toward a destination and can help investigate timeouts or where responses stop. Intermediate hops may not answer diagnostic packets even when the service is reachable, so asterisks alone do not prove an outage. Share the destination, time, connection type, and complete output with support rather than drawing a conclusion from one hop.
Match the tool to the symptom
- Use a HAR when the page opens but a particular request, script, or asset fails.
- Use curl when you need the HTTP response and timing independently of browser rendering.
- Use traceroute or MTR when support is investigating a path, timeout, or location-dependent reachability problem.
Common mistakes that create false outage diagnoses
- Testing only the failing page: without unrelated sites, you cannot establish scope.
- Assuming one failure proves a global outage: browser, device, DNS, route, account, and regional causes can look identical.
- Assuming a green status page proves reachability: provider dashboards have limited scope and may not reflect your route or a newly developing incident.
- Relying on one third-party outage checker: treat its report as a clue, not conclusive evidence for every user.
- Changing several settings at once: simultaneous resets make it difficult to learn which condition changed.
- Sharing raw diagnostic files: HAR captures and command output can expose sensitive information; sanitize before sending.
- Buying hardware too early: an Ethernet comparison can be useful only when your device and router have compatible ports; it is not a universal requirement.
What to tell support when the problem persists
A concise report lets the service provider or ISP reproduce the right condition. Include the exact service address, the first observed time with time zone, the precise browser message or HTTP status, and whether the page was blank, partially rendered, slow, or timed out. State how many unrelated sites you tested, which devices were affected, whether Wi-Fi and Ethernet differed, and whether another network changed the result.
Identify evidence without overstating it: “The official status page lists an incident affecting login in my region” is stronger and more precise than “the internet is down.” If no incident is listed, say so while noting that the page’s scope does not prove universal reachability. Attach sanitized HAR, curl, traceroute, or MTR output only when requested or when the support channel is designed to receive it.
A compact decision rule
Check the address, reload, and test unrelated websites. A multi-site failure sends you toward Wi-Fi or Ethernet, modem/router checks, public-network sign-in, a controlled restart, and then your ISP. A single-service failure sends you toward that service’s official status page and a comparison from another device or network. If the pattern is mixed, preserve the exact symptoms and use the advanced diagnostics that match them. This process cannot guarantee an instant cause, but it prevents the most common mistake: treating a local connection symptom or a provider-specific notice as proof about the entire internet.
