The reliable way to decide whether Pottery Barn Outlet furniture will fit is to pass two separate tests: it must fit the room once positioned, and it must physically travel from the delivery access point to that room. Use the exact outlet listing for the piece’s width, depth and height; tape its footprint on the floor; measure every doorway, hall, stair, elevator and turn on the route; then check the furniture in the orientation it will use while moving. Finally, confirm the item’s delivery and return terms before paying.
Outlet inventory includes sofas, loveseats, chairs, ottomans, benches, tables and cabinets, so there is no dependable “standard outlet size.” Dimensions, protrusions and removable components vary by listing. The following method adapts Pottery Barn’s measuring and delivery guidance to the specific piece and layout in your home.
What “fit” means for an outlet purchase
Fit has three parts, and passing one does not prove the others:
- Placement fit: the assembled furniture occupies an appropriate area in the room and leaves usable circulation.
- Access fit: the piece can pass every opening, corridor, stair, elevator and turn between the delivery point and its destination.
- Functional fit: the furniture does not make outlets, vents, switches, doors or normal movement unusable.
Check all three with measurements rather than relying on a product photo or on the furniture category. A cabinet that fits a wall may fail at a stair landing; a sofa that clears the front door may block an outlet or leave too little room to walk around it.

Start with the exact outlet listing
Open the current listing for the exact item and configuration you intend to buy. Record the dimensions shown there, not dimensions from a similar model, a different fabric configuration or a generic category page.
| Record | Why it matters | What to note |
|---|---|---|
| Width | Usually the limiting dimension when a sofa or case piece approaches a doorway or wall. | Overall outside-to-outside measurement, including arms or side panels. |
| Depth | Determines floor area and affects how the piece can be angled through an opening. | Deepest point, including backs, cushions or hardware that stays attached. |
| Height | Controls vertical clearance and whether the item can be tilted or stood on end. | Overall height and any taller back, finial or crown detail. |
| Configuration | Sections, legs, doors and removable parts can change both footprint and moving geometry. | Left/right orientation, modular sections, removable legs or cushions, and any shape notes on the listing. |
Save or photograph the listing details on the day you order. Outlet inventory is variable, and a replacement listing may have different dimensions even when the product name looks familiar.
Test the furniture footprint in the room
Mark the full outline
Measure the intended location and use painter’s tape to mark the item’s complete width and depth on the floor, following Pottery Barn’s room-planning advice. Include end tables, chaise sections, door swings or other parts that are part of the configuration. Stand back from several viewpoints and check whether the taped outline feels proportionate to the room before arranging delivery.

Plan circulation around it
Leave a practical walking path between the new piece and existing furniture. Pottery Barn’s furniture delivery guide suggests about 18–24 inches between pieces and recommends adding 1–2 inches when measuring for wiggle room. Those figures are brand recommendations, not universal building or accessibility standards; increase them when the route is busy, a door opens into the space or someone in the household needs more maneuvering room.
Check fixed features before you commit
Look inside the taped footprint and along its edges for anything the furniture could cover or make difficult to use:
Rank #2
- 20% more compact grip**: For improved ergonomics and control
- Integrated finger brake: For improved blade control
- Fractional blade graphics for quick and easy measuring
- Durable blade coating for longer blade life
- Electrical outlets and data or cable jacks that must remain reachable.
- Heating or cooling vents whose airflow would be blocked.
- Light switches, thermostats and control panels.
- Windows, radiators, baseboards and doors that need to open fully.
- Existing furniture that would become trapped or impossible to clean around.
A footprint can fit mathematically yet fail in daily use if a vent is sealed behind a cabinet or a switch is hidden behind a sofa arm.
Measure the entire delivery route
Trace the route, not just the front door
Begin at the point where the delivery team will leave the item and trace the actual path to the final room. Pottery Barn’s measuring guidance calls for the interior height and width of every doorway, staircase, elevator and hallway the item will pass through. Include a garage or exterior gate, the building entrance, lobby doors and any shared corridor in a multi-unit property.

Make a route measurement log
| Route point | Measure | Hidden constraints to inspect |
|---|---|---|
| Exterior or building entrance | Clear opening width and height | Thresholds, security doors, awnings and steps. |
| Interior doorways | Usable opening with the door opened as far as it will go | Door thickness, hinges, trim, handles and a door that cannot be removed. |
| Hallways and passages | Narrowest width and available ceiling height | Radiators, pictures, railings, sprinkler pipes and low fixtures. |
| Turns and landings | Space across the corner and diagonal clearance | Opposing walls, banisters, columns and furniture already stored there. |
| Stairs | Stair width, tread depth, headroom and landing dimensions | Handrails, newel posts, ceiling slopes and turns at the top or bottom. |
| Elevator | Door opening, interior width, depth and height | Door-closing time, handrails and the diagonal space available when turning. |
Measure the narrowest usable point, not the widest part of a room. Account for architectural details and low-hanging fixtures that reduce clearance. Photographing each tight spot and writing the measurement directly on the photo can prevent a later “it looked wider” mistake.
Include temporary obstacles
Decide how doors will be held open and whether a removable door, railing or light fixture is realistically allowed. Do not assume a delivery crew can dismantle property or remove a building door. In a shared building, confirm elevator reservations and hallway rules with management before ordering.
Compare the furniture with each opening in the right orientation
When a piece can move straight through
If the item remains upright and faces forward, compare its relevant width and height with the opening’s usable width and height. Leave the extra measuring margin recommended by the delivery guide instead of treating an exact numerical match as safe.

When a sofa must be angled
Pottery Barn’s furniture-measuring guidance uses sofa width and diagonal depth to evaluate entry. Sofa width must be less than the relevant entryway dimension in the orientation being tested. Diagonal depth helps determine whether the sofa can be tipped and passed through on end when a straight approach is impossible. Use the dimensions on the exact sofa listing and the actual doorway, hall and turn measurements; a diagonal that clears one door may still fail at the next corner.
When the piece is armless or wedge-shaped
For an armless piece such as a wedge, the same guide calls for checking back height against door width rather than substituting diagonal depth. This is a different geometric test from the sofa check. Identify the dimension that becomes the effective “height” while the item is tilted, then compare it with the door’s usable width and the space beyond the jamb.
Escalate uncertain geometry
If a stair landing, tight turn or unusual ceiling makes the orientation unclear, ask Pottery Barn for delivery assistance before placing the order. Do not infer success from a single doorway measurement or from the fact that a smaller piece previously made the trip.
Account for outlet furniture’s varied shapes
The outlet assortment changes and can include sofas, loveseats, chairs, ottomans, benches, tables and cabinets. Each type creates a different risk profile:
| Furniture type | Measurements that deserve extra attention | Room-use check |
|---|---|---|
| Sofa or loveseat | Overall width, depth, back height and diagonal depth; arm shape can increase the effective width. | Walking space in front, door swings and access to outlets behind it. |
| Chair | Arm-to-arm width, deepest point and height when tilted. | Whether it can be pulled out without colliding with a table or wall. |
| Ottoman or bench | Length, depth and any fixed legs or storage lid. | Clearance needed to use it without blocking the main path. |
| Table | Top dimensions, leg spacing and height; consider whether the top can be detached. | Chair pull-out space and door or drawer clearance. |
| Cabinet | Case width, depth, height and protruding hardware. | Door and drawer openings, wall anchors and vent or outlet access. |
For modular or multi-piece listings, measure each section and the assembled arrangement. A configuration may pass when separated but still fail if the final room cannot accommodate the combined footprint.

Use one worksheet when comparing two candidate pieces
If you are choosing between outlet listings, evaluate both with the same fields. The physically smaller piece is not automatically the better choice if its shape creates a difficult turn or leaves an unusable room layout.
| Comparison axis | Candidate A | Candidate B |
|---|---|---|
| Listed width × depth × height | Enter the exact listing values. | Enter the exact listing values. |
| Taped room footprint | Record walls, circulation and blocked features. | Record walls, circulation and blocked features. |
| Narrowest route opening | Record the opening and the furniture orientation used there. | Record the opening and the furniture orientation used there. |
| Tightest turn or landing | Describe the limiting corner, stair or elevator. | Describe the limiting corner, stair or elevator. |
| Configuration issues | Note removable parts, modules or unusual geometry. | Note removable parts, modules or unusual geometry. |
| Terms for this listing | Record delivery method and return eligibility. | Record delivery method and return eligibility. |
Keep the worksheet with your order confirmation. It gives you a factual basis for asking delivery questions instead of relying on a category label or a stock photograph.
Verify delivery and return terms before ordering
Read the delivery method shown for the exact outlet listing and confirm who is responsible for bringing the item to the room. Recheck measurements if the order changes configuration, fabric, quantity or delivery address.
Pottery Barn’s current US returns information generally allows eligible items to be returned within 30 days of receipt. Quick Ship upholstery has a 7-day period, and exclusions include final-sale items ending in .97. These are not blanket guarantees for every outlet purchase: eligibility, timing and fees can depend on the exact item and order. Check the listing and order terms before assuming a return is available, and treat a final-sale designation as a reason to resolve fit questions before purchase.

The room footprint fits, but a doorway is narrow
Re-measure the doorway with the door fully open and compare the opening with the piece in its intended tilted orientation. Check the next hallway and turn immediately afterward; clearing the jamb is not enough if the item cannot rotate.

The front door clears, but the stair route does not
Measure stair width, headroom, landings and banister projections. A sofa’s diagonal-depth strategy may work at a doorway yet fail where the stair ceiling slopes or a landing is short. Ask Pottery Barn for assistance rather than making an irreversible delivery assumption.
The piece fits the room but blocks a control
Move the taped outline until switches, thermostats, outlets and vents remain usable, or choose a different configuration. Do not count a blocked feature as acceptable merely because the furniture can be installed.
The listing does not explain removable parts
Contact Pottery Barn before ordering and ask which components can be removed by the delivery team and what dimensions remain during transport. Do not calculate clearance using a part that the listing never says is removable.

Stop before accepting a final placement that damages walls or traps the item. Photograph the route and the item, retain the listing and order details, and contact Pottery Barn promptly about delivery options and the item-specific return terms. The general US windows and exclusions may not apply to an outlet item marked final sale.
A final fit check you can print
- Copy the exact listing’s width, depth, height and configuration details.
- Tape the complete footprint in the destination room.
- Walk the room and confirm circulation, door swings and access to outlets, vents and switches.
- Trace the delivery route from the actual access point to the room.
- Measure every doorway, hallway, stair, landing and elevator at its narrowest usable point.
- Identify each turn and decide whether the item stays upright, angles or moves on end.
- Apply the appropriate geometry check: sofa width and diagonal depth, or back height for an armless wedge.
- Resolve uncertain clearances with Pottery Barn before ordering.
- Read the delivery method and item-specific return or final-sale terms.
- Keep the measurements, photos and listing details with the order confirmation.
When the room footprint, functional clearances and complete route all pass for the exact configuration, you have a defensible fit decision. If any one of those checks fails or remains unknown, pause the purchase until the dimension or policy question is answered.
