A genuine bargain survives three checks: the product’s actual price history, the final payable price at reputable sellers, and the offer’s conditions. A crossed-out price, a large percentage, a countdown clock, or a low-stock message is only a claim until you verify what the item cost before, what comparable sellers charge now, and what you must pay or agree to at checkout.
What makes an online discount genuine?
A discount is meaningful when the same item is offered for less than a credible comparison price and the saving remains after delivery, taxes, mandatory fees and conditions are included. The comparison must be like-for-like: identical model or product code, size, colour, condition, accessories, warranty and seller obligations.
Retailers may compare a sale price with a previous selling price, a manufacturer’s recommended retail price or another seller’s price. Those are different benchmarks. A recommended price is not proof that the shop ever charged it; a competitor comparison is useful only when the competitor, date and product variant are identified and accurate. European consumer guidance says these reference prices should be presented clearly so shoppers can understand the comparison.

Think of the advertised percentage as a question, not an answer. A product marked “50% off” can be a poor deal if the reference price was inflated, the item is a cheaper variant, delivery adds a large charge, or a membership is required. Conversely, a modest reduction can be excellent if the product’s verified history and total cost show an unusually low price.

The evidence to collect before you buy

How to check a claimed discount step by step
1. Identify the exact product and condition
Copy the model number, product code or ISBN, not just the marketing name. Record the storage capacity, dimensions, colour and package contents where relevant. A phone with less storage, a different regional model or a bundle without the advertised accessory is not the same comparison.
Read the condition wording carefully. Terms such as “refurbished,” “renewed,” “vintage,” “used,” “open box,” “close-out” or “display model” change the value and the applicable warranty. The US Federal Trade Commission (FTC) advises shoppers to note model and item details and to read these descriptions when comparison shopping.
2. Find out what the reference price means
Open the price details, terms or information icon beside the crossed-out figure. Determine whether it is the retailer’s own earlier price, a manufacturer’s recommended price or a comparison with a named competitor. If the page does not explain the figure, treat the percentage as unverified.
For a competitor comparison, check that the competitor is named, the price is current, and the competitor sells the same variant with equivalent delivery, warranty and availability. A retailer cannot make a meaningful comparison by using a higher price for a different size or an item that is no longer available.
3. Apply the EU 30-day benchmark where it applies
In the European Union, a trader announcing a reduction on goods generally must show, as the reference, the lowest price it applied during the 30 days before announcing the reduction. This is an EU consumer-law benchmark, not a universal rule for every country, product category or type of promotion.
European guidance describes an exception for successive reductions: in some circumstances, the reference can be the price charged before the first reduction. The exact treatment depends on the country and the structure of the promotion, so check national rules when the offer involves several staged discounts, loyalty pricing or special categories.
The EU rule answers what reference price a trader should display; it does not tell you whether the current price is competitive. You still need to compare the final cost and the product’s broader history.

4. Check a sufficiently long price history
Use a reputable price-history or comparison service, or save dated screenshots and receipts yourself. Look for enough history to distinguish a one-day low from a price that appears every weekend. A single earlier price cannot show whether the current offer is exceptional.
Price trackers have limits. Coverage may exclude a retailer, country, marketplace seller, variant or shipping charge. Some comparison services rank sellers that pay for placement, so the first result is not automatically the cheapest or most suitable. Treat the chart as evidence to inspect, not as a legal ruling or a guarantee that every listing has been captured.
Check the retailer’s own page as well as an independent history. A product can fall in price across the entire market because a new model has launched; in that case, a “sale” may simply reflect normal market adjustment.
5. Compare the final price with other sellers
Search the exact model or product code at several established retailers and at the manufacturer’s official site. Match condition, included items, delivery speed, warranty, return period and region. Note whether a marketplace listing is sold by the platform itself or by an independent seller.

6. Read every condition before adding the item to your basket
Look for requirements to buy another product, reach a minimum spend, enter a paid membership, use a particular payment method or accept a recurring subscription. Cashback may require a claim, a new account or a subscription that renews after an introductory period. A coupon can be limited to new customers, a specific colour or a short time window.
Read delivery, handling, installation, recycling and other unavoidable charges. Some sites reveal mandatory costs only after you enter an address. Also check return postage, restocking fees and whether the discounted item is final sale. A price is not genuinely lower for you if the conditions impose a cost or risk you would not otherwise accept.

7. Verify the seller and protect the payment
For an unfamiliar seller, search its name with terms such as “complaint” or “scam,” and check a physical address, customer-service route and return policy. Be cautious when a brand-name product is offered at an implausibly low price, particularly if the seller’s identity or warranty information is vague.
The FTC recommends paying by credit card where possible because it may provide dispute rights. Avoid sellers that insist on gift cards, wire transfers, cryptocurrency or payment applications when those methods are difficult to reverse. Keep the order confirmation, screenshots of the offer and correspondence in case the listing changes.
8. Test urgency claims instead of reacting to them
“Only two left,” “sale ends in 12 minutes” and “act now” messages are pressure techniques, not evidence of a saving. Note the stated end time or stock condition, then refresh the page or return later. A countdown that restarts after a refresh is a warning sign that the timer may not represent a real deadline. It is not, by itself, proof that the price is unlawful; verify the price, seller and terms independently.
Urgency can be legitimate when a retailer documents a fixed event or genuinely limited stock, but the claim should be consistent with the inventory and the written terms. Do not let a timer stop you from checking the total or reading the subscription conditions.
How to calculate the real saving
Use the same formula for every seller:
Payable total = item price + delivery + handling + taxes + mandatory fees + required recurring charges.
Then compare that total with the equivalent product’s total at other sellers and with a verified historical price. Keep optional extras separate; an extended warranty you choose is not part of the mandatory deal cost, while a required membership fee is.
If you want the percentage saving against a verified baseline, calculate (baseline total − offer total) ÷ baseline total × 100. Label the baseline precisely—for example, “lowest total price at this retailer in the preceding 30 days” or “current total at retailer X”—rather than calling it a general market saving.

What regulators found in recent sale-price checks
The European Commission and authorities from 25 countries screened 314 traders during a sweep conducted in November and December 2025, focusing on Black Friday and Cyber Monday price-marketing practices. The figures below describe that screened sample only; they are not estimates for every retailer, country or shopping event.

These results explain why checking the reference and the checkout total matters even when a sale page looks professional. They do not establish that a particular retailer acted unlawfully; enforcement and remedies depend on the individual case and national authority.

Common discount traps and the test for each one
An inflated “was” price
Compare the crossed-out figure with the retailer’s recorded prices and, where relevant, the EU 30-day lowest-price benchmark. If the page uses “RRP,” find out whether that is a recommendation rather than a price the retailer charged.
A cheaper or incomplete variant
Match model code, capacity, size, colour, condition and accessories. A listing that omits a charger, has less storage or is refurbished cannot validate the discount on a new, fully equipped version.
A subscription disguised as a deal
Read the renewal price, billing frequency and cancellation route before accepting a membership. Recalculate the first-year cost if the discount requires recurring payments.
Drip pricing at checkout
Proceed far enough to reveal delivery, taxes and mandatory fees without submitting payment. Compare that complete total, not the product-page number.

Cashback that is not an instant saving
Check whether cashback requires a separate claim, delayed payment, a new account or a subscription. Treat it as a conditional future benefit rather than subtracting it from today’s payable total.

Scarcity or a timer that never ends
Record the displayed deadline, refresh the page and check the written terms. A changing timer weakens the urgency claim, but the final decision should still rest on verified price and seller evidence.
A practical decision rule
Buy only when all of these statements are true:
- You have confirmed the exact product, condition and included items.
- You understand what the reference price represents.
- The price history shows the offer is meaningfully low for that retailer or market.
- The complete payable total beats equivalent alternatives or provides a clear non-price benefit.
- No subscription, bundle, coupon or cashback condition creates an unwanted obligation.
- The seller has a verifiable identity, workable returns and a payment method with reasonable dispute protection.
- Any deadline or scarcity claim is supported by written terms or observable stock, rather than only a timer.
If one item is unresolved, pause instead of allowing the countdown to make the decision for you. Most online prices change again, and a supposed one-time offer is not evidence that you must accept unknown conditions.
What to do when a discount appears misleading
Save evidence first
Keep screenshots showing the product identity, reference price, timer, terms and checkout total, along with the date and time. Save order confirmations and payment records. This establishes what was displayed if the page changes.

Ask for a clear explanation of the reference price, missing fees or subscription terms. Use the seller’s written complaint route and retain the response. If you paid by card and the seller does not resolve a non-delivery or misrepresentation problem, ask your card issuer about its dispute process.
Report through the appropriate channel
EU shoppers can seek help from a national consumer association or the European Consumer Centres Network, as directed by European consumer guidance. US shoppers can report online-shopping problems to the FTC after trying to resolve the issue with the seller or website. Other countries have their own consumer-protection authorities; use the agency for the country where you live or where the transaction occurred.
Which legal rule applies to you?
The 30-day lowest-price requirement described above is an EU benchmark for announcements of reductions on goods. Do not apply it automatically to the United States, the United Kingdom or every service, personalised price, loyalty offer or clearance arrangement. Rules can differ by jurisdiction and by the way the promotion is structured.
Where no specific rule is established for your location, the practical checks remain valid: identify the item, test the reference, compare history and current alternatives, calculate the total and verify the seller. A retailer’s compliance with a local disclosure rule still does not guarantee that its price is the best available.
