You cannot tell whether an old painting is valuable from its age or signature alone. Its likely market value depends on who made it, how securely the work is attributed, its condition and quality, provenance, subject, and what comparable paintings have recently sold for. Start by documenting the painting without altering it, then research its history and sales; if the answer matters financially, ask a relevant specialist or appraiser.
What makes an old painting valuable?
Age is only one detail, not a shortcut to value. A painting may be old but have little market demand, while a well-documented work by a sought-after artist may attract strong interest. Value is contextual: it depends on the work, the market, the date of the estimate, and what the valuation is for. The Smithsonian American Art Museum notes that fixed values are difficult to establish because condition, buyer and seller interests, and market trends all matter (Smithsonian American Art Museum guidance).
- Artist and attribution: Whether a work is accepted as made by an artist, associated with the artist’s workshop, or merely attributed to the artist can change how buyers assess it.
- Condition and quality: Tears, flaking, fading, water damage, overpainting, relining, or restoration can affect desirability. Artistic quality also matters.
- Rarity, subject, and medium: Buyers may respond differently to particular subjects, periods, or materials, depending on current interest.
- Provenance: A documented ownership history can support confidence in a work’s history and attribution.
- Comparable sales and demand: Recent prices for genuinely similar works provide useful context, but no sale is an exact substitute for assessing the painting itself.
How to document the painting safely
Make a record before researching or asking for an opinion. Photograph the work in even light, including the front and back, and take close-ups of the signature, frame, corners, labels, inscriptions, and any visible damage. Record the height and width, noting whether you measured the image or the framed object.

Do not clean the painting, remove labels, open the frame, or attempt a repair to expose a signature; these actions can damage the work or remove useful evidence.

How to assess a signature and attribution
A signature is a clue, not proof. It could be copied, added later, or misread. Compare it with documented examples, but assess it alongside the painting’s style, materials, subject, placement of the signature, and plausible date. Christie’s describes specialists considering signatures, brushwork, and other evidence in context, and notes that catalogues raisonnés can help with research (Christie’s appraisal overview).
Look for credible artist records, museum catalogues, archived sale records, and specialist scholarship. If a catalogue or specialist uses wording such as “after,” “attributed to,” “workshop of,” or “circle of,” preserve that exact wording. These phrases describe different levels of attribution; do not upgrade one to a confirmed autograph work yourself.
What the back of a painting can reveal
Photograph the reverse without removing anything. Labels, stamps, stencils, handwritten notes, inventory numbers, and old repairs may connect a painting to an owner, collection, auction, or record. Christie’s Old Masters specialist Olivia Ghosh put it this way: “Even the smallest markings can tell us something about its history” (Christie’s guide to the back of a painting).

A mark does not establish authorship or value by itself. Its usefulness depends on whether it is genuine and can be connected to this specific painting. Christie’s explains that some historical inventory marks can be matched to records that identify a sale’s date and place, seller, or price (Christie’s guide to the back of a painting).
How to research provenance
Provenance is the documented history of a work’s ownership. Make a timeline of known owners, approximate dates, and locations, and note where each detail comes from. Distinguish documentary evidence from family recollection. Useful records may include invoices, auction or exhibition catalogues, museum inventory records, archives, correspondence, and relevant certificates. Christie’s explains the role provenance can play in understanding an artwork’s history (Christie’s explanation of provenance).
A gap in the record does not prove a problem, but it may need further investigation. Ownership records can also raise questions that require specialist attention, including possible restitution concerns. Keep copies of documents and let an expert assess their relevance and authenticity; a paper or label matters only if it is genuine and belongs to the painting.

How to evaluate condition and compare sale prices
Record visible condition issues
Note visible tears, flaking, cracking, fading, water damage, patches, overpainting, relining, and other apparent restoration. These observations can help a specialist, but photographs alone are not a reliable way to diagnose the painting or decide what treatment it needs. Conservation and attribution questions may require different specialists. Christie’s identifies condition as an appraisal factor, while Sotheby’s includes it among the considerations behind estimates (Christie’s appraisal overview; Sotheby’s explanation of estimates).
Use completed sales, not asking prices
Look for completed auction or other sale records rather than relying on prices that sellers are asking. The most useful comparisons are recent works by the same artist with similar attribution, medium, size, subject, condition, provenance, and sale venue. When close matches are unavailable, a specialist may use less exact comparisons and explain the adjustments. The Smithsonian American Art Museum recommends using price guides for current sale and auction prices; Sotheby’s says specialists consider comparable sales and past performance for works by the same or similar artists (Smithsonian American Art Museum guidance; Sotheby’s explanation of estimates).
Christie’s reported that hammer prices across all its sales in the first half of 2026 averaged 24% above low estimates. That is a house-wide statistic for that period—not a forecast for an individual painting, or evidence that every lot exceeded its estimate (Christie’s explanation of auction estimates).

Which professional opinion do you need?
A preliminary auction estimate
An auction estimate is a guide to a possible sale price, not a guarantee. It can help you find out whether an auction house may be interested in selling the painting and what it might achieve at auction. Sotheby’s says its online estimate process is complimentary and non-binding, and that you do not need a formal written appraisal just to request a presale estimate (Sotheby’s guidance on requesting an estimate). Sotheby’s accepts photographs and information for specialist review of paintings and their sale potential (Sotheby’s painting sale information).
When comparing auction-house proposals, consider the sale channel, proposed attribution wording, estimate range, reserve terms, fees, timing, and whether the house explains its comparable evidence. Sotheby’s says a reserve in its process is set at or below the low estimate; specific terms vary by house and sale (Sotheby’s explanation of estimates).

A formal written appraisal
A formal appraisal is a separate service. Before commissioning one, tell the appraiser what the report is for—such as insurance, estate planning, a donation, divorce, or litigation. Ask whether the appraiser has relevant fine-art experience and whether the report meets the requirements for that purpose and jurisdiction. Confirm the effective valuation date, definition of value, scope, fee, and any conflicts of interest.

When comparing appraisers, look at their specialty and relevant experience, intended use and type of value, report scope and effective date, independence, explanation of comparable sales, fees, and the geographic applicability of their credentials or standards. The American Society of Appraisers publishes discipline-specific information about USPAP education and update requirements for its members; requirements vary across disciplines and jurisdictions (American Society of Appraisers course information; American Society of Appraisers USPAP FAQs).
Why different valuations can produce different figures
An auction estimate, an insurance appraisal, an estate valuation, and a value prepared for a legal matter may serve different purposes. They can use different definitions of value, assumptions, dates, and markets. A sale estimate is not automatically the right figure for insurance, estate, donation, or legal use. Tell the professional what decision the valuation must support, and check that the report is designed for that use.
No universal age threshold, signature test, or single database result can determine the value of an unidentified painting. Without images, dimensions, attribution evidence, condition information, provenance, and a defined market and purpose, a specific figure would be guesswork.
