There is no single sample-rate cutoff that defines high-resolution audio by itself. In common usage, high-resolution audio means digital audio with a sample rate and bit depth above CD’s 44.1 kHz and 16-bit specifications. Sample rate counts how many samples represent the sound each second; bit depth is a separate measure of how each sample is represented.

What does sample rate mean?

A sample rate is the number of audio samples taken per second. For example, 44.1 kHz means 44,100 samples each second. Apple’s QuickTime documentation describes the sample-rate field as the rate at which sound samples were obtained.

Sample rate is not bit depth. The rate relates to the frequency range a digital signal can represent; bit depth relates to the numerical representation of each sample. The commonly used high-resolution definition refers to both measures, but a high rate alone does not make a file high-resolution under that definition.

How the Nyquist rule connects sample rate to frequency

Under the Nyquist sampling theorem, a signal must be sampled at least twice as fast as its highest frequency to represent that frequency accurately. Applying this relationship, 96 kHz corresponds to a theoretical upper represented frequency of 48 kHz. That is a theoretical limit under the theorem’s assumptions, not a guarantee that every practical recording or playback chain represents frequencies perfectly; real systems use filters.

  • Single-side Monitoring: The 90° swiveling ear cups allow for single-ear monitoring, making it ideal for DJing or mixing. The self-adjusting and flexible headband ensures a fatigue-free listening experience, even during extended sessions, making these headphones perfect for mastering and mixing.
  • Compatibility: Pro-10 wired headphones work exclusively in wired mode and are compatible with a wide range of devices, including smartphones, laptops, tablets, desktop computers, audio interfaces, DJ mixers, amplifiers, and any device that features either a 3.5mm or 6.35mm audio jack.
  • Share Audio Port: With a shared audio port, easily connect another pair to share music or videos—no splitters or special cables needed.

For context, the Audio Engineering Society (AES) describes about 20 kHz as the known human auditory limit for airborne sound, while individual thresholds are not universal. A format’s ability to represent frequencies above that context does not, by itself, establish that listeners can hear or benefit from them.

Which sample rates are used, and for what?

Sample-rate choices depend on the job, not a universal sound-quality ranking. AES5-2018 recommends 48 kHz for professional PCM origination, processing, and interchange. It recognizes 44.1 kHz for certain consumer applications, 32 kHz for transmission-related applications, and 96 kHz where higher bandwidth or more relaxed anti-alias filtering is required.

Rate Context supported by the source
32 kHz AES5-2018 recognizes it for transmission-related applications.
44.1 kHz AES5-2018 recognizes it for certain consumer digital applications; it is also the CD sample-rate reference in the common high-resolution definition.
48 kHz AES5-2018 recommends it for professional PCM origination, processing, and interchange.
96 kHz AES5-2018 recognizes it for applications needing higher bandwidth or more relaxed anti-alias filtering.
88.2 kHz and 192 kHz Apple lists these, along with 48 and 96 kHz, among higher rates that have become standard.

The recommendations are application-specific. For example, 96 kHz can offer more bandwidth or filtering flexibility where those are needed; it is not a universal upgrade over 48 kHz. Apple’s Digital Masters technical guide lists 48, 88.2, 96, and 192 kHz as standard higher rates.

Does a higher sample rate sound better?

Not automatically. A higher number describes a format capability, not the quality of the recording, mastering, processing, or playback chain. AES’s overview of high-resolution audio treats resolution as broader than sample rate and bit depth, encompassing factors such as bandwidth, dynamic range, time and spatial representation, signal processing, and perception.

The cited technical sources explain format definitions and use cases, but they do not establish a controlled listening-test result showing that a particular higher rate is audible or preferred over a lower one. Avoid using a 96 kHz or 192 kHz label as proof that a recording sounds better than a 44.1 kHz or 48 kHz version.

How to choose a rate for a project

When an application offers several rates, choose based on the requirements of the entire workflow rather than the highest available number:

Audio-Technica ATH-M20x Professional Studio Monitor Headphones, Black
  • Advanced build quality and engineering; Designed for studio tracking and mixing
  • 40 mm drivers with rare earth magnets and copper clad aluminum wire voice coils
  • Tuned for enhanced low frequency performance
  • Circumaural design contours around the ears for excellent sound isolation in loud environments
  • Convenient single side cable exit
  • Required bandwidth: Determine the frequency range the project needs to represent.
  • Filtering: Consider whether the recording or processing application benefits from more relaxed anti-alias filtering.
  • Production and interchange: Match the rate to the professional or consumer workflow and the formats used by collaborators.
  • Delivery: Check the format intended for distribution so the working rate fits the downstream output.
  • Processing chain: Account for the other processing and playback stages; the file’s rate is only one part of the result.

These factors help determine whether a higher rate serves a technical purpose. They do not establish a universal rate that is best for every recording or listener.
