Check the asteroid’s exact designation in NASA/JPL’s CNEOS Sentry system if it is a confirmed near-Earth object, or in Scout if it is still an unconfirmed candidate. A listing means that at least one orbit still compatible with the observations could intersect Earth; it does not mean an impact is predicted. Newly listed objects are commonly removed from the risk list after additional observations tighten the orbit.
Start with the asteroid’s exact designation
A headline such as “asteroid may hit Earth” is not enough to identify an object. Asteroids can have provisional designations, numbered designations, survey names and similar-looking labels. Copy the designation exactly as it appears in the report, including letters, numbers and spaces, then search that designation in the official NASA/JPL Center for Near Earth Object Studies (CNEOS) monitoring pages.
Do not rely on a screenshot, a social-media post or an old article. Impact probabilities and risk ratings can change whenever new observations are added. The page you need is the live record for the specific object, checked as close as possible to the time you are making the decision or publishing an update.

CNEOS uses two different systems because the quality and duration of observations vary.

A Scout result is especially provisional because a candidate may have only a short observation arc. A Sentry entry has passed into the confirmed-object workflow, but its impact probability is still a calculation based on uncertain measurements—not a prediction that a collision will occur.
A practical lookup procedure
- Copy the complete designation from the original report.
- Search the CNEOS Sentry risk table for a confirmed object. Open the object’s detail page rather than relying only on a headline number.
- If the object is described as unconfirmed or newly detected, check Scout instead. Scout’s result covers only the short period for which a preliminary orbit can be evaluated.
- Record the page’s update time, observation span, probability, possible event date, rating and estimated size.
- Recheck the live record before drawing a conclusion. A value from an earlier day may no longer describe the object’s current orbit.
What a risk-list entry actually means
NASA/JPL describes an asteroid’s orbit as “the elliptical path about the sun that best fits the available observations of the object.” The important phrase is best fits. The observations do not identify one perfectly known path; they define a range of paths that remain compatible with measurement errors and the limited time over which the object has been observed.
With a short observation arc, many different orbits can fit the same sky positions. Most of those possible paths will miss Earth. A smaller subset may pass through Earth’s location at a future date. Sentry searches that allowed range of orbits. If any still-allowed path intersects Earth, the object can appear on the risk table even when its nominal, or best-fit, orbit misses Earth.
That is why a nonzero probability is not equivalent to “the asteroid will hit.” It means the observations have not yet excluded every impact-compatible trajectory. As astronomers collect more positions, the uncertainty region usually contracts. An apparent impact path can then be ruled out, causing the probability and rating to fall to zero or causing the object to disappear from the list.
CNEOS states that, whenever a newly discovered near-Earth object is posted on the Sentry Impact Risk Page, “by far the most likely outcome is that the object will eventually be removed as new observations become available, the object’s orbit is improved, and its future motion is more tightly constrained.” That statement describes the normal evolution of an early assessment; it does not guarantee the outcome for every individual object.
How CNEOS calculates the risk
1. Fit an orbit to observed positions
Telescopic observations provide positions of the object against the background sky at particular times. CNEOS fits an elliptical solar orbit to those positions. The quality of the fit depends on the number of observations, how widely separated they are in time and how precisely the positions were measured.

2. Represent the remaining uncertainty
Instead of treating the fitted orbit as exact, the calculation includes nearby orbits that are also consistent with the observations. Early in an object’s discovery, that cloud of possibilities can be broad. A potential Earth intersection anywhere within it contributes to the calculated impact probability.
3. Search forward in time
Sentry evaluates confirmed objects for possible impacts during a stated 100-year horizon. Scout performs a preliminary search for an unconfirmed candidate over the next few days and weeks. These are different jobs: Scout is a rapid triage system, while Sentry is the long-term risk-monitoring system.
4. Update as observations arrive
Every useful observation can shift the fitted orbit and narrow or reshape the uncertainty region. The resulting probability, possible dates and scale ratings may therefore rise, fall or vanish without any physical change to the asteroid itself. A changing number usually reflects improved knowledge, not an asteroid suddenly changing course.
Read all the fields together
No single field tells you whether an object is dangerous. Use the observation information, probability, date, scales and size estimate as one picture.

Keep the probability’s date and the page’s update time with any number you quote. “A 1-in-X chance” without a timestamp can become misleading after the orbit is recalculated.

Understanding the Torino Scale
The Torino Scale is the public communication scale. It runs from 0 to 10 and uses color coding. It combines the chance of impact with the potential consequences, but it does not account for how much time remains before the possible event.

- Level 0: The chance of impact is zero or effectively zero. An object may receive this level after observations show that all relevant trajectories miss Earth.
- Level 1: The object represents a routine close approach with an extremely unlikely collision and no cause for public concern. New observations often reduce a level-1 entry to level 0.
- Levels above 1: A higher integer signals a more exceptional combination of possible impact likelihood and consequences. The number must still be read alongside the current probability, event date and observation history.
A nonzero Torino value is not a forecast of a collision. Conversely, Torino 0 does not mean astronomers have stopped studying the object; it means the public risk category is effectively negligible under the current solution.
What the Palermo Scale adds
The Palermo Scale is designed for technical comparison rather than headline communication. It combines the event probability and estimated energy relative to the background hazard from impacts that occur naturally over time. Specialists can use it to distinguish between two cases that both receive Torino 0, because the technical relative risk may differ even when neither warrants public concern.
For a general reader, treat Palermo as context after checking the current probability and observation arc. Do not substitute a Palermo value for a plain-language conclusion about whether an impact is expected.

Why an asteroid’s risk can increase or disappear
Early data can create a misleadingly narrow story
A short arc may allow several very different future paths. One of them can pass through Earth while the best-fit path does not. The system therefore reports a small but nonzero probability rather than pretending that the best-fit orbit is certain.
New measurements can move the solution either way
Additional observations may eliminate the impact-compatible paths, reducing the probability to zero. In other cases, a new measurement can shift the calculated range so that a possible encounter remains or temporarily receives more weight. Neither movement means the asteroid physically accelerated toward Earth; it means the estimated orbit changed.
Do not compare numbers from different update times
Comparing yesterday’s screenshot with today’s live page can make an ordinary recalculation look like a dramatic event. Use the current record and note the observation span that produced it.

Case study: the 2024 YR4 assessment
CNEOS’s account of 2024 YR4 illustrates the process without serving as a current warning about that object. After discovery, Sentry identified a possible impact in 2032. As more observations accumulated, the orbit became more accurately constrained and the predicted uncertainty region narrowed. The example shows why an early risk entry should be followed over time rather than treated as a final forecast.

Mixing those stages can turn a historical possibility into a false present-tense claim.

If two objects are being discussed at once, compare equivalent fields at the same update time. The following order prevents a dramatic headline number from dominating the analysis.
- Cumulative impact probability: Note whether it is rising, falling or stable across updates.
- Maximum Torino rating: Record the highest current public-facing level and the potential consequences associated with it.
- Palermo value: Use the technical score to compare relative hazard against the background impact rate.
- Observation count and arc: A longer, better-populated arc generally gives the orbit solution more constraint, although these fields are not safety guarantees.
- Estimated size: Compare the approximate diameters only after noting the albedo uncertainty. If reflectivity is unknown, the estimate may be within a factor of two.
- Event date and update time: A probability attached to a different date or older solution is not an apples-to-apples comparison.
A useful comparison sentence names all of those qualifications: “Object A has the higher current probability on the latest update, while Object B has a longer observation arc and a lower technical score.” Avoid declaring one object “more dangerous” from diameter alone.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Calling a possibility a prediction
Replace “the asteroid will hit” with “a small set of currently allowed trajectories still intersects Earth.” This wording preserves what the calculation actually establishes.

The nominal orbit is the best-fitting path, not the only path considered. Check the uncertainty and probability fields on the detail page.

Treating a low score as a guarantee
Torino 0 or 1 describes the current public risk category. It is not a promise that no future update can change the assessment.
Ignoring the difference between Scout and Sentry
Scout’s short-term candidate assessment should not be presented as a century-scale prediction. Once the object is confirmed, use its Sentry record for the long-term view.
Quoting an unqualified diameter
Size estimates depend on brightness and reflectivity assumptions. State that the diameter is approximate and include the factor-of-two uncertainty when albedo is unknown.
Reporting an old probability as current
Always include the update date or time and revisit the live page before publication or sharing. A past score may describe an orbit that has since been ruled out.
A concise checklist for a live story
- Have you copied the exact asteroid designation?
- Is the object confirmed in Sentry or still a candidate in Scout?
- What are the latest observation count and observation span?
- What probability and possible event date are listed now?
- What Torino and Palermo values accompany that solution?
- Is the size estimate labelled approximate, with albedo uncertainty explained?
- Have you stated that the probability is a model result based on an uncertainty region?
- Did you check the live record rather than an old screenshot?
If those questions are answered, a reader can distinguish a monitored possibility from a predicted impact. The official systems are designed to update as the evidence improves, so the responsible conclusion is always tied to the latest designation, observations and timestamp.
