A sale price is a good deal only when the exact appliance fits your space and needs, costs less after delivery and installation, qualifies for any advertised incentives, and remains economical to operate and maintain. Compare identical model numbers, calculate the complete delivered price, then check EnergyGuide information and local rebates before treating a markdown as a bargain.
Start with the right definition of a “good deal”
A large percentage discount is not proof of value. A discounted appliance can cost more after delivery, installation, required parts, haul-away, taxes, or a warranty difference. It can also consume more energy, require expensive maintenance, or fail to fit the opening in your home. Conversely, a model with a smaller markdown may have a lower total cost over the years you expect to own it.
The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) describes ownership cost this way: “The cost of owning a home appliance has three components: the initial purchase price, the cost of repairs and maintenance, and the cost to operate it.” Use that three-part framework, while also checking the practical terms of the transaction.
- Identity: Is it the same model and configuration as the comparison offer?
- Transaction: What will you actually pay for the appliance, delivery, installation, required parts, haul-away, and taxes, less only discounts and incentives you can verify?
- Ownership: What are the expected energy, water, repair, and maintenance costs during your planned ownership period?
- Suitability: Does it fit the opening, provide the needed capacity, and include the features and service terms your household requires?
If any of these answers is unknown, the advertised price is not yet a confirmed deal; it is only a lead for further checking.

1. Compare identical products, not similar-looking listings
Before comparing prices, write down the complete identity of each appliance. The model number is the most reliable anchor. Retail listings can use similar photos or family names for products that differ in capacity, finish, controls, included accessories, or internal components.
Record the configuration
- Exact model number, including suffixes that identify finish, voltage, or regional configuration.
- Capacity and physical dimensions.
- Finish and color.
- New, open-box, refurbished, or used condition.
- Included components, such as racks, hoses, trim kits, filters, or ice-maker parts.
- Warranty length, coverage, and who performs service.
- Return, exchange, and damage-reporting terms.
A lower price is meaningful only when these characteristics match. A different finish may be cosmetic, but a different capacity or configuration can change both purchase value and energy use. Treat a listing as a separate offer whenever the model number changes, even if the product name appears identical.
Verify the listing before using its price
Ask the seller to confirm the model number, condition, what is included, and every delivery or installation charge in writing. Save the quote or checkout summary. Prices and stock can change, and an advertised “from” price may exclude the configuration shown in the photograph.

2. Calculate the complete transaction price
Use a net-price calculation rather than the large number printed on a sale banner:
Net transaction price = item price + delivery + installation + haul-away + required parts or accessories + taxes and other mandatory charges − discounts − confirmed eligible rebates.
Consumer Reports’ appliance-store buying guidance, updated January 19, 2023, identifies price, service, delivery, installation, and other fees as factors to compare. Those charges can differ by seller even when the model and advertised item price are identical.
Charges to ask about
- Delivery: Standard delivery may not include stairs, long carries, room-of-choice placement, or a narrow-access appointment.
- Installation: Confirm whether connection, leveling, testing, and removal of shipping materials are included.
- Required parts: A new appliance may need a hose, cord, valve, vent, trim kit, drain kit, or other component not included in the base price.
- Haul-away: Old-unit removal can be a separate charge or unavailable for certain products.
- Taxes and mandatory fees: Include the amount shown for your location rather than comparing pre-tax prices from different regions.
- Service differences: A lower quote may provide a shorter warranty, fewer service options, or a different return window.
Do not subtract a rebate merely because it appears in a promotional headline. Subtract it only after confirming that your location, household, purchase date, model, and installation conditions satisfy the program.

If a seller will not disclose a fee until delivery, record it as unknown rather than assuming it is zero. An offer with a slightly higher item price can be cheaper once its service package is included.
3. Verify rebates and incentives locally
Energy-efficiency incentives are location- and product-specific. The EPA’s ENERGY STAR rebate finder lists offers from participating partners, but a listing is not an automatic entitlement. Programs can have income limits, utility-service boundaries, purchase-date rules, model lists, documentation requirements, or limited funding.
Check eligibility in this order
- Identify the exact model number and whether the incentive names that model or an eligible product class.
- Check the utility or government program serving the installation address.
- Confirm whether the purchase must be from a participating seller or whether installation by a qualified contractor is required.
- Ask how and when the money is paid: instant discount, mail-in claim, bill credit, or tax-related benefit.
- Save the receipt, model documentation, proof of installation, and any required forms until the claim is complete.
Ask both the seller and the utility to confirm the conditions in writing. If an incentive is uncertain, calculate the deal without it and show the incentive as a separate possible upside. That prevents an unavailable rebate from making a poor offer appear cheaper.
4. Use the EnergyGuide label to estimate running cost
For covered products, the FTC EnergyGuide label is designed to help shoppers compare energy use and estimated annual operating cost among similar models. The label’s estimate represents typical use and a national-average energy price. Your bill can be higher or lower because local utility rates, usage patterns, climate, settings, and household size differ.

Read the label correctly
- Compare the estimated annual energy use with a similar capacity and configuration.
- Use the estimated annual operating cost as a common reference, not a promise of your bill.
- Check the assumptions and comparison range printed on the label.
- Keep the label’s measurement period and product category in mind when comparing offers.
To adapt the estimate to your situation, obtain your utility’s current price per kilowatt-hour (or other applicable energy unit) and your expected usage. A simple adjustment is:
Estimated annual cost at your rate = labeled annual energy use × your utility rate.
This is still an estimate. Seasonal operation, temperature settings, door openings, wash cycles, water temperature, and other behavior can change actual consumption. Do not compare a high-capacity appliance with a smaller one solely because the high-capacity model has a lower labeled cost; first decide whether the capacities serve the same need.
Which products carry labels?
The FTC says EnergyGuide labels apply to covered categories including refrigerators, freezers, clothes washers, dishwashers, water heaters, air conditioners, furnaces, boilers, heat pumps, pool heaters, and televisions. Confirm label availability for the exact category and model. Not every appliance has an EnergyGuide label, and a label’s absence is not by itself evidence that a model is inefficient.
5. Convert energy differences into an ownership comparison
Once you have net transaction prices and comparable annual energy estimates, estimate the period you expect to keep the appliance. The more efficient model is not automatically the better financial choice if its purchase premium is greater than the likely operating-cost difference during that period.
Use a transparent payback calculation
Annual operating-cost difference = less-efficient model’s estimated annual cost − more-efficient model’s estimated annual cost.
Simple payback period = efficient model’s net-price premium ÷ annual operating-cost difference.
For example, suppose two otherwise equivalent models have net transaction prices of $900 and $1,080, a $180 premium for the second model. If your rate-adjusted estimates differ by $30 per year, the simple payback is six years. If you expect to own the appliance for four years, the premium would not be recovered through that modeled energy difference. If you expect to own it for eight years, the energy difference could matter more. This is an illustrative calculation, not a prediction of any particular model’s performance.

Include water use where it is a meaningful cost, especially for clothes washers and dishwashers, and include expected maintenance or repair differences only when you have a reasonable basis. Do not present a payback result as guaranteed savings: utility rates, usage, repairs, and ownership length can all change.
6. Make sure the discounted appliance fits your home and routine
Fit is part of price. An appliance that cannot be moved through the entryway, opened beside a wall, connected to the available utilities, or used at the required capacity is not a bargain regardless of its markdown.

- Large Capacity, 21 Cu. Ft.
- Factory Installed Automatic Ice Maker
- ENERGY STAR Qualified
Measure the complete installation
- Width, height, and depth of the opening.
- Door, drawer, and lid clearance, including swing direction.
- Rear and side clearances specified by the manufacturer.
- Path from the delivery vehicle to the installation location, including doors, turns, stairs, and elevators.
- Electrical outlet, gas line, water supply, drain, vent, and other connection locations.
Measure the opening, not just the old appliance. A replacement may need different clearances or a different connection kit. Ask the seller or installer to confirm the measurements before you commit.
Match capacity and configuration to actual use
For refrigerators, ENERGY STAR consumer guidance notes that larger refrigerators generally use more energy and that size and freezer configuration affect the buying decision. Choose enough capacity for your household without paying to cool space you will not use. Similar logic applies to washers, dryers, dishwashers, and water heaters: compare models serving the same workload rather than choosing a smaller unit solely to obtain a lower label estimate.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →List the features that are genuinely required—such as a particular cycle, layout, accessibility feature, or control scheme—before comparing prices. A sale model that lacks a necessary feature can force a second purchase or create ongoing inconvenience.
7. Price the warranty, service, delivery timing, and returns
Two identical model numbers can still represent different purchase experiences. Record the warranty and service terms alongside the price.
- Warranty: Note duration, covered parts and labor, exclusions, and whether service is provided in your area.
- Return policy: Check the time limit, restocking charge, return shipping, and rules for installed or used appliances.
- Damage reporting: Confirm how quickly you must report dents, missing parts, or shipping damage and what proof is required.
- Delivery timing: A lower price may not help if the appliance arrives after a renovation deadline or leaves you without a working unit.
- Installation responsibility: Establish who performs the work and what happens if the existing connection does not meet requirements.
Do not assign a made-up dollar value to a warranty or service difference. Instead, describe the difference clearly and decide how much risk and delay your household can accept.
Build one worksheet for every offer
Use the same rows for each seller and model so that omissions are visible. The following worksheet is a practical comparison device; it is not a single calculation mandated by the FTC or any retailer.
| Comparison area | What to record |
|---|---|
| Identity | Exact model number, size or capacity, finish, condition, included components |
| Checkout | Sale price, delivery, installation, haul-away, required parts, taxes, mandatory fees |
| Adjustments | Discounts actually applied and rebates for which eligibility is confirmed |
| Energy and water | EnergyGuide annual use and cost, your local rate, expected use, and water information where relevant |
| Ownership | Expected years of use, plausible repairs and maintenance, and calculated payback where useful |
| Terms | Warranty, service provider, return window, damage rules, delivery date, old-unit removal |
| Fit | Opening dimensions, clearances, delivery path, utilities, capacity, required features |
Ask the seller to confirm fees and terms in writing before purchase. Keep the worksheet with your receipt and rebate documents so you can verify what was promised if delivery or installation changes.

The percentage discount is large, but the reference price is irrelevant
A markdown percentage says nothing about whether the remaining price is competitive. Compare the exact model’s net transaction price at multiple sellers instead of judging the discount against an unverified former price.
The cheapest listing is a different configuration
Check the model suffix, capacity, finish, condition, and included parts. If any differs, place the listing in a separate comparison group.
Installation turns the deal into the expensive option
Request an itemized installation quote, including required conversion or connection parts. Recalculate the net transaction price with those charges included.

The EnergyGuide number is treated as a guaranteed bill
Use the label for standardized comparison. Adjust it with your local rate and expected use, and retain the FTC qualification that the estimate reflects typical use and a national-average energy price.
The appliance does not fit after delivery
Measure the opening, clearances, utilities, and delivery path before buying. Ask who pays for a failed delivery or return when the site was not prepared.
A cheap model has terms that do not meet your needs
Compare warranty, service, return, damage-reporting, and delivery timing. A lower price with unacceptable terms is not equivalent to a fully supported offer.

Refrigerators and freezers
Compare capacity, freezer configuration, dimensions, door swing, and EnergyGuide use. Larger refrigerators generally consume more energy, so select capacity based on household needs and available space. Verify that the model can pass through the delivery route and that water or ice connections, if required, are included in the installation plan.
Clothes washers and dishwashers
Compare energy and water information for equivalent capacity and cycle assumptions. Include hoses, connectors, installation, and haul-away. A machine with a lower purchase price may cost more if it uses more water or requires parts that the competing quote includes.
Water heaters, heating and cooling equipment
Confirm that the label category, fuel type, capacity, venting, electrical service, and installation requirements match your home. Installation and required modifications can dominate the price difference, so an item-only comparison is especially unreliable.
Products without an EnergyGuide label
Do not invent an annual operating-cost comparison. Use the manufacturer’s documented specifications when available, compare equivalent configurations, and focus on net price, fit, warranty, service, and expected maintenance. The FTC label rules cover specified categories, not every household appliance.
What the available evidence does—and does not—tell you
The FTC consumer guide includes a historical illustrative refrigerator example of roughly 600 to more than 800 kilowatt-hours per year and about $50 to $70 in annual operating cost under its national-average assumptions. These figures are examples from that guide, not current utility estimates or a market-wide benchmark. Use the current EnergyGuide label and your local rate for a purchase decision.
No universal discount percentage proves that an appliance sale is genuine, and there is no source-backed seasonal calendar here that identifies one universally cheapest time to buy. No live model, seller quote, stock status, warranty, delivery charge, or rebate eligibility is established until you verify it for your location and exact model.
A final decision rule
- Reject any offer whose model identity, condition, or configuration you cannot verify.
- Reject any offer that does not fit the measured opening, clearances, delivery path, utilities, or required capacity.
- Calculate the net delivered and installed price using written charges and only confirmed discounts or rebates.
- Compare EnergyGuide use and estimated cost for equivalent models, adjusted for your local energy price and expected usage.
- Consider expected repairs, maintenance, warranty, service, return terms, and delivery timing over the years you expect to own the appliance.
- Choose the offer with the lowest credible total cost that meets your household’s requirements—not the offer with the biggest advertised markdown.
When two offers remain close, prefer the one with clearer written fees, dependable service and return terms, a confirmed fit, and an incentive you can document. That approach turns a sale label into a verifiable buying decision.
