A large “% off” badge does not prove that an Amazon offer is cheap. The reliable test is to identify the exact item and offer, compare its delivered price with that listing’s own price history, understand whether the comparison is a List Price or a Typical/“Was” Price, and then decide whether the savings justify buying now. If no trustworthy history exists, treat the displayed percentage as unproven rather than as evidence of a bargain.
What makes an Amazon discount a good deal?
A good deal is a price that is unusually low for the exact product configuration you would receive, after accounting for shipping, coupons, membership conditions, seller, condition and taxes where applicable. “Unusually low” is product-specific. A 10% reduction may be excellent for an item whose price rarely moves; a 40% badge may be ordinary if the product repeatedly returns to that level.
The crossed-out figure is only a comparison point. Amazon may show a validated List Price (a manufacturer-suggested retail price checked against prices on Amazon and other retailers) or a Typical/“Was” Price. Neither figure, by itself, tells you how often this exact offer has appeared or whether another retailer has the same item for less. Price history supplies that missing context.

1. Confirm the exact listing and offer
Stay on the product detail page and verify every attribute that can change the price or the item you receive:

- Size, capacity, storage, quantity or bundle contents.
- Color, finish and other selectable variants.
- New, used, renewed or refurbished condition.
- The seller and fulfillment method shown for the offer you will add to your cart.
- Any coupon checkbox, subscription, membership, regional restriction or minimum quantity.
- Whether the displayed price applies only to a limited-time promotion.
Switching from a 128 GB device to a 256 GB version, or from a single item to a multipack, can change both the current price and the historical pattern. A discount on one variant does not establish that another variant is discounted to the same degree.
2. Open Amazon’s price-history view
Amazon says shoppers can open the price-history link on a product detail page. You can also ask its shopping assistant a question such as “What’s the price history?” Amazon renamed Rufus to Alexa for Shopping on May 13, 2026, although labels and availability can change as the interface is updated.
The current guidance describes 30-day, 90-day and 365-day views, along with low-price indicators for those periods. Look for the following pattern:

- Near a recurring low: the item often reaches this level, so the deal may be normal rather than exceptional.
- At a recent high: the badge may be comparing today with a higher reference price even though the product was cheaper recently.
Amazon says the feature is available to customers in the United States, United Kingdom, Canada and India. It also says 365-day insights were rolling out in the United States, United Kingdom and India, with broader availability expected. Your country, account and listing may therefore show different windows or no history at all.
3. Read the comparison label, not just the percentage

A List Price is an external suggested-retail reference; a Typical/“Was” Price is an Amazon transaction statistic with a stated 90-day window. They are not interchangeable. The history chart is the better way to see how the actual listing behaved over time.

4. Compare the delivered cost
Use the amount you will really pay, not the headline item price. Include shipping, a coupon that must be selected, membership requirements, quantity limits and any unavoidable fees. If taxes vary by destination, compare the same destination and note that the final total may change at checkout.
For a simple comparison, calculate:
effective price = item price + required shipping and fees − coupon or credit that you can actually use
Then compare that effective price with the historical prices for the same offer type. A lower sticker price with paid shipping may cost more than a slightly higher listing with free delivery.
5. Check the seller, condition and return terms
Price history can be misleading when the offer has changed from a new item sold by one merchant to a used item sold by another. Confirm the condition and seller shown beside the “Buy Now” or cart controls. Review the stated return window and restocking terms before treating a lower price as equivalent value.
6. Check a longer or independent chart when useful
If Amazon supplies only a short view, or you want a second visualization, Keepa describes charts of Amazon prices and price-drop alerts. Keepa says it tracks more than 7 billion Amazon products; that is the service’s own coverage claim, not an independently audited measurement. Verify that its chart covers the exact listing, marketplace, variant and price type you are considering. A chart for a parent product, another country or a different condition can produce the wrong conclusion.

7. Compare the same product elsewhere
Search for the identical model and configuration at competing retailers and compare delivered prices. Match the model number, included accessories, warranty, condition and quantity. Do not compare a retailer’s base configuration with Amazon’s bundle or a different generation. A smaller Amazon percentage can still be the better purchase if the total cost and terms are lower.

8. Decide whether waiting has value
If the item is needed immediately and the current effective price fits your budget, a merely good price may be sufficient. If the purchase is flexible, a target-price alert can reduce pressure from countdown timers and “limited-time” badges. Amazon describes target-price alerts and price-history access through its shopping features. An alert is a convenience, not a forecast: it cannot guarantee that the item will reach your target or remain in stock.
How to interpret a price-history chart
Choose a window that matches your decision
- 30 days: useful for detecting whether a current event price is genuinely below recent everyday pricing.
- 90 days: useful for comparing with Amazon’s stated Typical/“Was” Price period and spotting recurring promotions.
- 365 days: useful for seasonal products and annual events, but availability may depend on country and rollout status.
A short history can make a price look unusually low simply because an earlier seasonal low is outside the chart. Conversely, a one-year chart may include an abnormal clearance price that is not realistic for a normal purchase.
Look for the shape, not one isolated point
Repeated drops to the same level indicate a routine sale price. A single sharp dip may have been a coupon, a stock-clearance event or a different offer condition. Check the dates and duration of low points where the chart provides them. If the current price is only a few cents above a frequent low, waiting may offer little benefit; if it is far above a recent low and you do not need the item, waiting is more defensible.
Confirm which price the chart records
Some tools distinguish the product price, shipping, marketplace offers, coupons and warehouse or used inventory. Make sure the line you are reading corresponds to the offer in your cart. A chart that excludes coupons cannot tell you whether today’s coupon-adjusted total is a record low.

Why the percentage-off badge can mislead
The percentage is calculated from the displayed reference price. If that reference is a List Price that shoppers rarely pay, “40% off” may describe a large mathematical reduction without describing an unusually low transaction price. If the reference is a 90-day median, the percentage is more closely tied to recent Amazon payments, but it still does not show the product’s lowest price or another retailer’s price.
Amazon reported in a 2026 article that more than 80% of deals in its most recent Prime Day were at Amazon’s lowest price of the year so far, that hundreds of thousands of items were discounted by 40% or more, and that more than 50 million customers had used its price-history tool. These are Amazon’s company-reported figures, tied to the “most recent Prime Day” relative to that article’s publication date. They describe Amazon’s event and tool usage; they do not establish that any particular listing is a good deal.
A practical decision framework

This framework avoids a universal threshold. There is no percentage that makes every Amazon deal good because products have different price volatility, replacement cycles and seasonal demand.

The chart does not appear
Confirm that you are signed in, that the item is sold in a supported marketplace and that the feature is available for the listing. Amazon’s stated availability covers the United States, United Kingdom, Canada and India, with some 365-day views still rolling out. A missing chart is an evidence limitation, not proof that the offer is bad or good.

The chart shows a different price than checkout
Recheck variant, condition, seller, coupon and shipping. Parent pages can switch the selected option when you change color or capacity. Open the exact offer and compare the final cart total again.

An independent tracker disagrees with Amazon
Compare timestamps, marketplace, currency, seller type and whether coupons or shipping are included. Different services may record different offer classes or update at different times. Prefer the source that matches the offer you can actually purchase, and label the result as uncertain if neither chart clearly matches.
The item is new or frequently redesigned
There may be too little history to establish a normal price. Compare the model number and release generation with other sellers, then use the current delivered price and your urgency rather than relying on a percentage badge.
Consumer-protection context in the United States
The U.S. Federal Trade Commission’s Guides Against Deceptive Pricing distinguish a genuine former price from a fictitious comparison price. The guide says a former price should be a bona fide price at which the item was offered regularly for a reasonably substantial period. It gives the example of briefly setting an artificial inflated price so a later reduction appears large.

This is U.S. guidance, not a determination that a particular Amazon listing violates the law, and other countries apply different rules. For shoppers, the practical lesson is to ask whether the comparison price reflects a real, regular offering rather than assuming that a crossed-out number is the item’s normal market price.
A printable pre-purchase checklist
- Exact model, generation, size, capacity, color and bundle confirmed.
- New, used, renewed or refurbished condition confirmed.
- Seller, fulfillment and return terms checked.
- Coupon, membership, subscription and quantity requirements understood.
- Delivered cost calculated, including required shipping and fees.
- List Price versus Typical/“Was” Price identified.
- 30-, 90- and, when available, 365-day history reviewed.
- Current price compared with recurring lows, not only the displayed percentage.
- Identical configuration checked at other retailers.
- Decision based on budget and urgency; alert set if waiting is practical.
The bottom line
Judge an Amazon sale by the exact item’s history and the total amount you will pay. A big discount badge is a starting clue, not a verdict. Verify the reference-price type, match the variant and offer, inspect an appropriate history window, and buy only when the price is good enough for your needs and timing.
