Don’t try to identify a security alert by whether it sounds or looks AI-generated. A convincing voice, polished wording, familiar logo or realistic-looking pop-up cannot prove that a message is genuine—and there is no reliable consumer test established here for detecting AI authorship from the message alone. Instead, stop interacting with the alert and verify its claim through the company’s official app or website, reached independently, or through contact details you already know are genuine. Never use a number or link supplied by a suspicious alert to verify that same alert.

What matters more than whether AI made the alert

An alert can be fraudulent whether it was written by a person, generated with AI, or copied from a legitimate message. The practical question is not “Does this sound like AI?” but “Can I confirm this problem through a channel I reached independently—and is the requested action safe?”

AI can help scammers impersonate organizations or people. Microsoft’s Digital Defense Report 2025 describes threat actors using AI-modified voices while impersonating support agents by phone or video. That is a reason to verify surprising requests through a separate trusted channel, not evidence that every synthetic-sounding voice or well-written message is a scam. Nor does the report establish an AI detector that consumers can use to authenticate alerts.

Microsoft also reported that it thwarted USD 4 billion in fraudulent transactions and scams during April 2024–April 2025, many of which it said were likely aided by AI content. That is a Microsoft-reported figure for that stated period—not an estimate of all AI scams, a government total or a measure of how likely any particular alert is fraudulent.

Red flags that mean you should pause

These signs do not identify who—or what—created a message. They do indicate that you should not comply without independent verification.

  • Pressure to act immediately: The message threatens severe consequences, demands an instant payment or says your account or device will be lost unless you act now. Urgency and threats are recurring tech-support scam tactics; they are reasons to pause, not proof of AI authorship.
  • A phone number inside a security warning: A browser pop-up, error screen or alarming recording that tells you to call for help should be treated as suspicious. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) says, “Real security pop-up warnings and messages will never ask you to call a phone number.” Microsoft Support likewise says, “Genuine Microsoft error messages never include a phone number to call.”
  • An unsolicited offer to fix your device: Be wary if an unexpected caller says they detected a problem and asks you to install software, grant remote access, reveal a password, disclose personal information or pay for support. A scammer with access may steal information, install malware or charge for fake assistance.
  • A link or number that controls the whole interaction: An alert may tell you to log in through its link, call its number or use its contact details to dispute a supposed charge. Don’t let the message choose the route you use to verify it.
  • A request for secrets, money or control: Passwords, financial details, payment and remote access are sensitive. Do not share them with an unexpected caller or enter them on a page reached through an unsolicited alert.

Surface details can be misleading in either direction. Spelling mistakes or an unusual sender address may be clues, but correct spelling and familiar branding do not authenticate a sender. The FTC warns that scammers can spoof logos and make up fake addresses; Microsoft notes that scammers can sound convincing. A local-looking caller ID, natural-sounding voice, company logo or polished message is not proof that the contact is genuine. Likewise, an awkward sentence or odd-looking message alone does not prove it is a scam.

Why a polished alert can still be dangerous

Modern scam messages can copy a company’s colors, terminology and support style. A fake page may even contain accurate information copied from the real provider. Those details establish only that the sender knows what the provider looks like; they do not establish who controls the link, phone number or account behind the message.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Caller ID, sender names and displayed email addresses are also presentation layers that can be manipulated. A message that appears to come from your bank, a software company or a colleague should be treated as an unverified claim until the underlying account or request is confirmed through a route you selected yourself. Do not “test” the sender by asking it to repeat information or by continuing a conversation; an impersonator may already know enough to answer convincingly.

There is no need to settle the authorship question before taking a safe action. If the contact is genuine, an independently reached support channel can confirm the issue. If it is fraudulent, refusing the supplied route prevents the scammer from controlling the next step.

Assess the request without scoring the message

Use three practical questions to decide whether to stop and verify. They are risk-assessment prompts, not a diagnostic score: no combination can establish whether AI generated a message or conclusively authenticate its sender.

What to check Higher-risk pattern Safer way to proceed
Verification channel The alert insists you use its own link, phone number or contact details. Open the provider’s official app or type its known web address yourself. If you need to call, use a number you already trust or one published through an independently reached official source.
Requested action The contact asks for money, credentials, unrelated personal information, software installation or remote access. Do not comply with an unsolicited request. Check the account or device through an independent official channel instead.
Urgency The message threatens consequences or demands action before you can verify. Take time to check. Pressure is a reason to pause, not a reason to skip verification.

A legitimate service can have real security notices, account problems or support needs. The point is not to dismiss every alert: it is to separate the claim from the contact route and verify the claim on your own terms. A message that says a charge needs review, for example, does not make the link in that message the safe place to review it.

Verify a suspicious alert safely

  1. Stop interacting with the alert. Do not call its number, click its link, open an attachment, pay, enter a password or grant remote access. If a browser pop-up is difficult to dismiss, avoid calling any number it displays; close the browser window or tab if you can do so safely.
  2. Reach the named provider independently. Open the company’s official app, or type a web address you already know is correct. If you need phone support, use a number from an independently reached official website, a receipt or product packaging—or another contact detail you already know is genuine. Do not rely on details supplied by the suspicious message.
  3. Check the specific claim through that route. Review the relevant account, transaction or device status. If a caller claims to represent a business, contact the colleague or vendor through a known number and follow your organization’s procedures. For a supposed request from someone you know, reach them using a separate contact route you have previously trusted.
  4. Check the device if there is a real reason for concern. Update your existing security software and run a scan. A scan can help check a suspected device problem, but it does not prove that the alert was genuine and is not a reason to buy a product promoted by the alert.
  5. Get a second opinion if you feel pressured. Ask a trusted person to review the message before you act. If the issue still looks like a genuine technical problem, consult a trusted technician rather than the unsolicited contact.

Independent navigation matters even when the message uses a familiar service. Type the address yourself or use a bookmark you created previously; do not search for a phone number while remaining on the suspicious page, because advertisements and copied support listings can lead back to the same scam. If you use a search engine, check that you are on the provider’s genuine domain before signing in, and never disclose a one-time code to someone who contacted you unexpectedly.

For a business, verification should include the normal approval path. A payment request that appears to come from a supplier still requires confirmation with the supplier’s known contact and whatever internal authorization your company normally requires. A request to install remote-management software should be handled by the organization’s designated IT process, not by a caller’s instructions.

What to do after clicking, sharing information or paying

Respond to what you actually exposed. Do not continue the conversation with the person who contacted you to ask for help recovering an account or payment.

If you shared a password

Change it immediately using the service’s official app or website, reached independently. Change it anywhere else you reused it, and use unique passwords for accounts. If you can no longer access the account, use the service’s independently reached account-recovery process.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you granted remote access or suspect malware

Disconnect the affected device from the network and contact a trusted security professional. If it is a work device, follow your organization’s incident-response instructions; those procedures may call for keeping a device powered on while isolating it. Don’t assume that simply closing the support session removes software or access the caller may have installed.

If you disclosed payment details or sent money

Contact your bank or card issuer promptly using a number you know is genuine. Explain what was shared or paid, ask whether the payment can be reversed or the card replaced, and monitor account statements for unfamiliar activity. The available remedy depends on the payment and circumstances, so act quickly rather than relying on a promise from the person who contacted you.

If you received a phishing email or other scam message

Report it to the appropriate authority in your country and consider informing the organization being impersonated through its official channel. In the United States, consumers can report tech-support scams at ReportFraud.ftc.gov. The FTC’s small-business guidance also lists reportphishing@apwg.org for phishing emails. Reporting routes differ by country; do not assume a U.S. contact is the right route elsewhere.

What AI changes—and what it does not

AI can make impersonation more convincing, including by helping create or modify a voice. Microsoft’s 2025 report documents AI-modified voices used in phone or video impersonations of support agents. A familiar voice or polished presentation should therefore not replace independent verification when a request is unexpected or asks for money, credentials or access.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That evidence does not mean every fluent message, unusual voice or realistic logo is AI-generated, or that every message involving AI is fraudulent. It also does not establish a reliable consumer method for identifying AI authorship from grammar, voice artifacts, visual glitches or other content clues. Trying to decide whether a clip or message “looks like AI” can distract from the decision that protects you: whether the claim checks out through a trusted, separately reached channel.

For a business, the same principle applies to urgent requests that appear to come from a colleague or vendor. A familiar voice or convincing video is not a substitute for following internal approval steps and confirming the request through a known-correct contact route.

Common situations and the safe response

A pop-up says your computer is infected and shows a number

Do not call the displayed number or provide access to the device. A phone number in a supposed security pop-up is a strong warning sign. Close the alert without using its contact details, then check the device with existing security software or ask a trusted technician if you remain concerned. If a browser page is frozen or keeps reappearing, close the browser rather than following its instructions.

An unexpected support caller says they found a problem

Do not give the caller remote access, passwords, payment details or personal information. End the call and contact the purported company using an independently verified route. If the caller claims to be from a service you use, check your account through that service’s official app or website rather than asking the caller to prove their identity.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A message says you must dispute a charge through its link

Do not sign in through the message. Open the financial provider’s official app or type its known web address, then inspect the account or contact the provider using trusted details. If you did enter payment information on the linked page, contact the bank or card issuer promptly.

A voice or video message appears to come from someone you know

Pause if it makes an unexpected urgent request, especially for money, credentials or access. Confirm with that person through a separate contact route you already trust. Do not use a phone number or link included in the suspicious message as the only way to verify it.

A real device problem remains after you ignore the alert

Verify the device issue separately. Update your existing security software and run a scan, or consult a trusted technician. The device may need attention even if the alert that first raised concern was fraudulent; those are separate questions.

For small businesses: make independent verification routine

Staff should not have to make high-stakes decisions while a caller or message is pressuring them. Set a clear procedure for verifying unexpected requests, particularly requests for payments, account changes, credentials, software installation or remote access. Require staff to use known contact details and internal approval procedures rather than contact information in the request. If an employee has already granted access or disclosed information, follow the organization’s incident-response guidance promptly; isolate a potentially affected device as directed, since business procedures may specify whether it should remain powered on.

When a suspicious message impersonates a supplier, colleague or service provider, notify the organization being impersonated through an independently reached channel if appropriate. Preserve or report the message according to your organization’s process. A convincing voice, correct company details or polished language should not bypass a verification step.

What not to buy or install because of an alert

A pop-up that claims your computer is infected may try to sell antivirus software, a cleanup service or a subscription. Do not purchase or install a product simply because the warning recommends it. First verify the device through security software you already have or through a technician you choose independently. The same caution applies to remote-support tools: install them only as part of a support process you initiated through a trusted provider.

No single commercial “AI detector” or visual authenticity check is established here as a way to approve a security warning. Spending money on a detector does not replace checking the account, device or transaction through an official channel.

Bottom line

You do not need to determine whether AI created a threat or security alert to stay safer. Treat pressure, unsolicited requests for access or secrets, and pop-ups that tell you to call as reasons to stop. Verify the underlying claim using an official channel you reach yourself, and respond to any information or access you already disclosed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a security pop-up that tells me to call a number real?

Treat it as suspicious. The FTC says real security pop-up warnings will never ask you to call a phone number, and Microsoft says genuine Microsoft error messages never include one. Do not call; close the page safely and check the device through existing security software or a trusted technician.

Can I tell from grammar, a voice or a logo that an alert was made by AI?

No reliable consumer test is established for identifying AI authorship from those clues. Spelling errors can be a warning sign, but polished language, a familiar logo or a natural-sounding voice cannot authenticate the sender. Verify the claim through an independently reached official channel.

What if the caller says they are from my bank or software company?

End the unsolicited interaction without sharing passwords, codes, payment details or remote access. Open the company’s official app or type its known web address yourself, or call a number you already know is genuine. Check the account or device there.

I clicked the link but did not enter anything. What should I do?

Close the page, avoid downloading anything, and reach the named provider independently rather than through the link. If you downloaded software, granted access or entered credentials, follow the corresponding password, device-isolation or bank-contact steps immediately.

Should I run an antivirus scan after seeing a fake warning?

If you have a genuine reason to suspect a device problem, update your existing security software and run a scan. A scan is a device check, not proof that the warning was genuine, and it is not a reason to buy software promoted by the alert.

Where should I report a tech-support scam?

Reporting options depend on your country. In the United States, consumers can use ReportFraud.ftc.gov; FTC small-business guidance also lists reportphishing@apwg.org for phishing emails. Inform the impersonated organization through an official channel when appropriate.

The Bottom Line

Ignore the supplied contact route, not your concern. Pause, verify through an official channel you reach independently, and act quickly to secure passwords, devices or payments if you already shared them.
