You usually cannot tell whether a political call is genuine or a scam by listening to the voice. AI-generated speech can sound convincing, and caller ID can be faked. If a call gives voting instructions, demands money or asks for personal information, hang up and verify the claim through an official or independently located contact—not a number or link supplied by the caller.
Use this quick check when a political call seems suspicious
- Pause. A familiar voice, official-sounding caller ID or urgent message does not prove who is calling.
- Do not act on the call alone. Do not provide personal or financial information, send money, or follow voting instructions before checking them independently.
- Hang up and verify. Find the person or organization’s contact information separately and call a known number. For polling places, voting procedures and deadlines, check the official election authority for your location.
- Do not press keys in a suspicious robocall. The FTC advises hanging up rather than responding to robocall prompts.
- Keep useful details and report suspected fraud. Save a voicemail or note the time, displayed number and message, then report suspected fraud to the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.
Why a voice or caller ID cannot authenticate the call
A convincing voice is not proof of identity
AI-generated audio can imitate a person’s voice, and even human listeners may find synthetic content difficult to identify. The FBI recommends independently verifying a caller’s identity rather than relying on the sound of the voice. An unusual cadence, tone or word choice may prompt caution, but a natural-sounding voice does not establish that the caller is real.
Caller ID can be spoofed
The number and name shown on your phone can be manipulated to look familiar or official. The FTC warns that scammers can spoof government caller ID, so a displayed agency number is not proof that the agency called. Do not call back using the number shown in a suspicious call; locate the organization’s contact details independently.

A caller might claim that a polling place changed, a deadline is imminent, or you must act immediately. Treat such claims as unverified until you check with the relevant election office. The same independent-check rule applies to requests for money or sensitive information.

What to do with voting instructions or a request for money
For voting information
End the call and consult the official election authority responsible for your location. Verify the polling place, voting method, eligibility details and deadlines there rather than relying on a caller’s instructions. Election rules and procedures vary by location, so a claim that sounds plausible—or comes from a familiar voice—still needs an authoritative check.
For money or personal information
Do not pay, share account details, or disclose sensitive information during an unexpected call. Contact the purported person or organization using a number you already know or find independently. The FTC’s guidance on voice-cloning scams likewise recommends calling the person said to be involved at a known number and checking the story: Fighting back against harmful voice cloning.

Can a detector app or call-screening feature tell you?
No single listening test, detector or watermark can conclusively prove that a political call is genuine or fraudulent. The FTC describes several distinct approaches to voice-cloning risks: preventing or authenticating content before it reaches a listener, detecting synthetic signals during use, and analyzing recordings afterward. Each approach has limits; methods evolve, and detection can produce false positives or miss synthetic audio. A warning sign may help you decide to verify, but it should not replace verification.
Call screening can help reduce unwanted calls, but it does not establish who is speaking or whether a voting claim is true. Caller-ID labels and filters are not identity authentication. For the specific claim in a call, an independent callback or an official election-information check is more actionable than trying to judge the audio.

What U.S. rules say about AI voices in robocalls
On February 8, 2024, the Federal Communications Commission announced that AI-generated voices count as “artificial” voices under the Telephone Consumer Protection Act’s restrictions on artificial or prerecorded voice calls. The FCC said the ruling took effect immediately. It addresses how AI-generated voices are classified under those restrictions; it does not mean every political call is unlawful or a scam. Whether a particular call violates applicable rules can depend on details this article does not assess, including consent, exceptions and state law. See the FCC announcement.
FCC Chairwoman Jessica Rosenworcel said in that announcement: “Bad actors are using AI-generated voices in unsolicited robocalls to extort vulnerable family members, imitate celebrities, and misinform voters. We’re putting the fraudsters behind these robocalls on notice.”

A documented example: the New Hampshire primary call
Before the 2024 New Hampshire primary, an AI-generated call imitated President Joe Biden and falsely suggested that voting in the primary would prevent a person from voting in November. The incident shows why voting claims should be checked with an official election authority rather than accepted because a voice sounds recognizable. It is an example, not evidence of how common AI-generated political scam calls are. The Associated Press report covered the call.

This guidance draws on U.S. federal sources and a U.S. election example; it is not a state-by-state or international legal guide. A suspicious call may be a scam or an attempt to spread misinformation, but the use of an AI-generated voice alone does not prove the caller’s motive.
