Yes—but only in tightly controlled experiments. Models have used functional MRI (fMRI) signals to identify a viewed picture from candidates, classify object categories, reconstruct an approximate scene, track which of two images a person is attending to, and retrieve a likely caption. These systems require specialized scans, study-specific training and a defined task. They do not read arbitrary thoughts or produce a pixel-perfect record of anyone’s private experience.

What “infer what you’re looking at” actually means

There is no single brain-scanning task called “seeing what someone sees.” Scientists define a measurable prediction problem, collect brain responses while a participant views known material, train a decoder, and test it on new measurements. The output can be a choice among candidates, a category label, a set of visual features, a generated image or a text description.

Those outputs answer different questions. Selecting the correct picture from a list is easier to interpret than generating an unrestricted picture. A category such as “dog” or “car” is less specific than the exact shape, color and layout of a scene. A caption that captures the meaning of an image is not evidence that the system recovered every visual detail or the person’s conscious experience.

Task What the model produces What success means What it does not establish
Candidate identification One image selected from a known set The measured brain pattern is more compatible with the seen image than with alternatives Unconstrained recovery of any image or thought
Feature or category decoding Visual attributes or an object class Predicted representations agree with the class or feature measured in the study Exact appearance, memories or subjective feelings
Image reconstruction A newly generated picture The output resembles the target under the study’s visual or semantic metric A pixel-perfect copy of perception
Attention decoding A reconstruction influenced by the attended item The pipeline changes in the direction of the image the participant was instructed to attend to General attention reading in uncontrolled situations
Caption retrieval A likely sentence from a large caption collection The retrieved text describes the viewed image’s content or meaning Verbatim access to a person’s thoughts or speech

What a brain scan contributes

The key demonstrations use fMRI, not an ordinary photograph of the brain. fMRI estimates changes in blood oxygenation associated with neural activity. It is an indirect signal: the scanner does not record a person’s visual experience, words or individual neurons directly. The visual reconstruction work includes a pipeline built with 7-tesla fMRI, a high-field laboratory setup rather than a consumer device.

Because the signal is indirect and measured over regions of tissue, a decoder works with patterns distributed across visual areas. The model learns regularities between those patterns and stimuli shown during the experiment. Scanner strength, acquisition protocol, preprocessing, the selected brain regions and the participant’s cooperation all affect the result. Replacing fMRI with an unspecified “brain scan” overstates what has been demonstrated; the evidence summarized here does not show equivalent performance from a routine clinical MRI, an EEG headset or a phone sensor.

How a visual brain decoder is built

  1. Show known stimuli. A participant views natural images, objects or other visual material while the scanner records fMRI responses. For training, the experimenters know exactly which item was on screen and when.
  2. Prepare the measurements. Researchers align scans, reduce noise and represent responses from selected visual regions. The representation may be paired with a computational model of receptive fields, visual features or a language-model embedding.
  3. Fit a participant-specific mapping. The system learns how that person’s responses relate to image features or semantic descriptions. Some pipelines also learn a conversion between participants, but that alignment is an additional model, not an automatic property of the brain.
  4. Run a held-out test. New fMRI responses are presented to the decoder. The test might ask it to choose one picture from many, predict a category, rank captions or supply features to a generative model.
  5. Score the defined output. Identification studies can report whether the selected image is correct. Reconstruction studies may compare visual features or semantic similarity. Caption studies can evaluate whether retrieved text describes the same scene. A score from one task cannot be compared directly with a score from another.
  6. Interpret the result conservatively. If a generated image looks convincing, some details may come from the generative model’s learned prior rather than uniquely encoded information in the scan. The reliable conclusion is limited to the tested task and conditions.

What major experiments have demonstrated

Identifying a natural image from many candidates

Nishimoto and colleagues used receptive-field models of visual cortex to identify which image a participant had seen from a large set of novel natural images. Their paper states: “We show that these receptive-field models make it possible to identify, from a large set of completely novel natural images, which specific image was seen by an observer.”

This is an important result because the test images were novel and the model had to select the viewed one rather than simply memorize a small display. It is still a constrained selection problem: the decoder evaluates candidates supplied by the experiment or generated under a known protocol. The result does not mean the model can recover an arbitrary image when no candidate set or participant-specific calibration exists.

Generating an approximate scene with Brain-Diffuser

Brain-Diffuser, described by Furkan Ozcelik and Rufin VanRullen in a 2023 Scientific Reports paper, combines decoded visual information with a latent diffusion generator. The abstract calls it “a visual reconstruction framework called ‘Brain-Diffuser,’ relying on the powerful generation capabilities of Versatile Diffusion.”

The two-stage design matters. First, the fMRI pattern is decoded into representations associated with image content. Then a generative model turns those representations into a complete natural-looking image. Diffusion supplies texture, edges and other plausible details that may not be individually recoverable from the measured signal. A reconstruction can therefore be semantically faithful while differing in exact object boundaries, colors or layout. Calling it an inferred or generated approximation is accurate; calling it a photograph of someone’s perception is not.

Decoding object categories from seen or imagined items

Other investigators have decoded seen and imagined object categories with hierarchical visual features. The model predicts a category from computed representations associated with different feature levels and brain areas. Such a result can show that a response contains information useful for distinguishing, for example, one object class from another.

Category decoding is deliberately less ambitious than recovering an entire scene. A correct class label does not reveal the exact exemplar, its position, the participant’s personal associations or whether the item was vividly imagined. Performance also depends on which categories were included and how the representations were defined.

Showing the effect of visual attention

In an experiment with two superimposed images, reconstructions changed according to the image the participant was instructed to attend to. Training data came from fMRI responses to single natural images, and the reconstruction pipeline was then applied to the combined display.

This provides evidence that attention changes the information available to that particular decoder. It does not establish a general-purpose attention meter. The participant followed a task, the stimuli were controlled and the model had been trained on related single-image responses. Real-world scenes with many objects, shifting attention and no calibration would be a different problem.

Retrieving a caption from visual brain activity

A 2025 study in Nature Machine Intelligence mapped visual fMRI activity to language-model embeddings and used nearest-neighbor lookup in a corpus of 3.1 million captions. The corpus is described as Google Conceptual Captions. The system therefore produced a textual description by finding language whose learned representation was close to the decoded visual activity.

The figure of 3.1 million is the size of the caption collection, not a decoding-accuracy percentage. Caption retrieval demonstrates that visual brain activity can support a semantic description in a laboratory setup. It does not show that a model can transcribe every detail, recover an unseen person’s inner monologue or work from any scan without task-specific training.

Comparing the experiments without mixing their claims

Study or approach Recording and setup Output type Candidate choice or generation Training and evaluation implication
Nishimoto and colleagues (2008) fMRI responses from visual cortex while viewing natural movies or images Identity of a viewed natural image Selection from a large set of novel candidates Tests whether the correct item can be identified; it is not unrestricted image synthesis
Brain-Diffuser (Ozcelik and VanRullen, 2023) High-field visual fMRI, including a 7T-based pipeline Generated natural-scene reconstruction Generation guided by decoded features and a diffusion prior Similarity must be judged with visual or semantic measures; generated detail is not proof of unique recovery
Hierarchical object-category decoders fMRI responses to seen or imagined objects Category or feature representation Classification or feature prediction Results depend on categories, brain areas and feature level used in the experiment
Attention experiment fMRI responses to displays containing two superimposed images Reconstruction that tracks the attended image Generation influenced by an instructed focus of attention Evidence applies to the trained pipeline and controlled attention task
Visual-language caption study (2025) Visual fMRI mapped to language-model embeddings Nearest caption from 3.1 million entries Retrieval from a fixed corpus Measures semantic description, not exact wording or pixel-level image recovery

Why a convincing reconstruction is not an exact memory

Generative models are designed to complete incomplete information. If decoded features indicate a landscape with a person near a structure, the generator can add plausible sky texture, perspective and object details. Those additions make the output readable, but they also create opportunities for error. Two different images can share the same broad semantic representation, and a single fMRI pattern can be compatible with multiple detailed pictures.

Evaluation must therefore match the claim. Candidate identification asks whether the correct item beats alternatives. Category decoding asks whether the predicted label is right. Reconstruction can be assessed by comparing visual features or semantic content. Caption retrieval asks whether the sentence describes the scene. A high score on one axis does not prove accuracy on the others.

Meaning-level decoding has a similar limitation in adjacent language work. An NIH summary of a 2023 fMRI language-decoder study reported that the system more often produced text that did not exactly match the original but captured its gist. That finding concerns language decoding, not visual reconstruction, but it illustrates why semantic agreement should not be described as verbatim recovery.

Participant-specific training is a central constraint

A decoder learns the relationship between a person’s brain responses and the study’s stimuli. It normally needs substantial calibration data from that participant. A model trained on one person cannot be assumed to work unchanged on another person because anatomy, functional organization, scanner alignment and response patterns differ.

Cross-individual visual reconstruction is possible only with an additional neural-code conversion procedure trained on corresponding fMRI responses. That conversion is itself learned from data. It does not remove the need for alignment or guarantee that a decoder trained on one volunteer will generalize to everyone.

Claims about a “universal” brain reader should therefore specify whose scans trained the model, how much data were collected per participant, whether the test person appeared during training, and what alignment method was used. If those details are missing, the headline may be describing a laboratory demonstration more broadly than the evidence permits.

Can an MRI read your thoughts?

Not in the ordinary meaning of “read your thoughts.” The visual experiments infer properties of an instructed visual stimulus under controlled conditions. They do not provide a general channel into memories, plans, beliefs, private speech or every image that happens to cross someone’s mind.

Even when a person imagines an object, the decoder is solving a defined category or feature task. It is not proving that the model can recover an unprompted stream of consciousness. Likewise, a caption that captures the gist of a viewed scene does not reveal why the person found it meaningful, what they felt, or which details they consciously noticed.

The safest wording is that AI can decode information related to visual content from fMRI in specific experimental settings. “Mind reading” suggests broader capability and certainty than these studies establish.

What an ordinary reader can and cannot do today

The cited systems require a research scanner, stimulus presentation, synchronized recordings, preprocessing software and a model trained for the participant and task. The evidence does not substantiate a validated consumer product, app or accessory that lets someone place a routine scan into a general-purpose image reader.

A clinical MRI appointment also does not automatically provide the data needed for decoding. Clinical scans are acquired for diagnosis, often with different sequences, timing and coverage from a visual-decoding experiment. Without responses recorded while known images were shown, a model lacks the calibration relationship that makes the inference possible.

There is consequently no responsible consumer accuracy percentage to quote. Laboratory results vary with the scanner, participant, stimulus set, training duration, evaluation metric and whether the output is a choice, label, caption or generated image.

How to evaluate a new “AI brain reading” claim

  1. Check the modality. Confirm that the claim concerns fMRI if it is being compared with the visual studies above. Ask whether the scanner and sequence are described.
  2. Identify the exact task. Is the system selecting from candidates, classifying categories, predicting features, generating an image or retrieving a caption?
  3. Look for the candidate set. A result obtained by choosing among supplied images is different from open-ended reconstruction.
  4. Ask who supplied training data. Determine whether the test participant was calibrated, how much data were collected and whether cross-person conversion was used.
  5. Read the metric. Find out whether the score measures exact identity, category accuracy, visual-feature similarity or semantic agreement. Do not compare unlike numbers.
  6. Separate decoded information from generated detail. A diffusion model or other generator can fill in plausible content. Inspect what was measured before treating visible details as recovered facts.
  7. Check the conditions. Note whether images were shown one at a time, whether attention was instructed, and whether the test used natural scenes, objects or imagined items.
  8. Limit the conclusion. State only what the experiment tested. A successful demonstration under calibration is not evidence of universal, passive or covert thought reading.

Privacy and interpretation questions

Visual decoding raises legitimate questions about consent, data retention and who controls neural recordings, even though the experiments described here are not consumer surveillance systems. The relevant safeguard is methodological as well as legal: participants should know what stimuli are presented, what outputs the model is designed to produce and how scans and derived representations will be stored.

Interpretation also matters. A model’s output is a statistical inference with uncertainty, not a direct statement from the participant. A wrong category, a semantically plausible caption or a generated object detail should not be treated as evidence of deception, intent or a private belief. The narrower the task and the clearer the evaluation, the less room there is for such misuse.

Bottom line

AI can infer aspects of what a person is looking at from specialized fMRI data in controlled experiments. The strongest demonstrations identify viewed images from candidates, decode categories or features, generate approximate scenes and retrieve captions that capture visual meaning. Every result depends on a trained model, a defined stimulus and an evaluation rule. It is evidence of constrained visual information decoding—not a general-purpose MRI mind reader and not an exact recording of someone’s perception.
