A splash does not by itself prove that an AA battery has leaked or failed. But batteries are not designed for underwater use, and a visibly wet cell—especially one with white powdery residue—should be handled as little as possible. Keep it out of the device and follow safe removal and local disposal guidance.
Does a wet AA battery still work?
Wetness and leakage are different conditions. Water on the outside of a cell does not establish that its contents have escaped or that it has failed. Duracell says its batteries are not designed for underwater use, but that statement does not establish that every brief splash damages every AA battery or chemistry. Its guidance gives no universal safe exposure time or water-depth threshold.
If the battery is merely damp and has no visible residue, avoid putting it back into a device while wet. If it is visibly wet or has white powdery material on it, limit handling and remove it only as necessary for proper disposal. The powdery residue is a reason for extra caution; do not touch or brush it off with bare hands.

How to handle a wet or powder-covered cell
- Limit contact. Handle the cell only as needed to remove it safely. Avoid touching visible residue.
- Wash exposed skin and clothing. Use soap and water if they came into contact with the battery or residue.
- Respond promptly to eye exposure. Flush the eyes with running water for at least 15 minutes, then seek immediate medical assistance, as Duracell advises.
- Dispose of the cell according to local guidance. Check your municipal disposal information or a local battery collection program rather than assuming household trash rules are the same everywhere.

If the battery leaked inside a device
Leakage inside a battery compartment is a separate problem from clean water on an intact cell. Duracell recommends working in a well-ventilated area and wearing household gloves and eye protection when cleaning leaked battery material. Its guidance describes removing leakage from electrical contacts with a toothbrush or cotton swab, and says the device must be completely dry before trying a replacement battery.
Those instructions address leaked battery material; they are not a general water-damage repair method. Do not use a cleaning mixture intended for battery leakage on a cell that is simply wet. If the device remains damp, shows corrosion or still does not work after it is completely dry, consult the device maker’s instructions or support rather than assuming that a fresh battery will fix it.

Choosing a replacement battery
Use the size and battery type specified by the device manufacturer. AA size alone does not tell you whether the device requires alkaline or another chemistry, or whether it is designed for rechargeable cells. If the device uses multiple batteries, Duracell recommends replacing all used cells at the same time. A replacement cell will not repair moisture or corrosion damage to the device.

How to dispose of the battery
Disposal rules vary by location. Duracell points consumers to local government disposal information and collection options, including Call2Recycle; Energizer also notes that rules can vary by municipality or state and encourages recycling. Check your local government’s instructions or a local collection program for the right option where you live.
