A remaster preserves an original game’s design when the player is still making substantially the same decisions, in the same structures, under the same rules and pressures. Higher resolution or new models do not answer that question by themselves. Compare equivalent moments in both versions, document the platform, patch and settings, and judge six areas separately: mechanics, structure, pacing and challenge, controls and interface, audiovisual feedback, and text or narrative.
The result can be mixed rather than a simple yes or no. A game may retain every level, enemy and puzzle while adding camera-relative controls, health bars or optional boosts that change how it feels to play. Describe each change and whether it is mandatory, enabled by default or optional instead of relying on the marketing label “remaster.”
What “preserving the original design” means
There is no regulator or standards body that decides whether a remaster is faithful. Square Enix localization project manager Yusuke Haruguchi offered a useful working distinction in a 2023 Final Fantasy Portal interview: a remake may move from 2D to 3D, remodel characters or redesign a game, while a remaster generally aims to create the same experience through newer graphics, higher resolution or other improved development media. That is a publisher employee’s description, not a binding industry definition.
Assess the player-facing result rather than the label or a developer’s intention. A team can preserve source code or gameplay intent while changing what players see, hear, control or are required to do. Conversely, a project described as a remake can deliberately retain the original’s timing and decision-making. Bluepoint producer Randall Lowe said the PlayStation 4 version of Shadow of the Colossus was intended to preserve how the game felt while adopting a more contemporary control scheme; studio president Marco Thrush nevertheless called that release a remake and a ground-up rebuild.

- Updated and reconstructed visuals to be far more realistic and richly textured vs the original game
- Upgraded models for each character, graphical updates for a more immersive environment
- Estimated gameplay hours: 40 to 50 per title
- Sound: Players will be able to choose between original sound and the new, re-arranged sound
The six design dimensions to compare
1. Core rules and mechanics
Start with the rules that govern play. In matched situations, check movement acceleration, jumping distance, aiming, attack timing, damage, enemy behavior, resource use, inventory limits, puzzles and failure conditions. Ask whether a player must perform the same actions, with the same timing and information, to succeed.
- Movement: Is the character’s speed, turning, jump arc or collision behavior materially different?
- Combat: Do attacks, cooldowns, hit reactions, enemy tactics and damage thresholds work the same way?
- Resources: Are ammunition, healing, currency, magic or upgrade rules unchanged?
- Failure and recovery: Are checkpoints, lives, saves and penalties equivalent?
A developer statement that the original engine or rules were retained is useful evidence, but it is not a substitute for observing the player experience. Record an exact example, such as a jump that now has a wider margin or an enemy that reacts sooner.
2. Structure and content
Compare the shape of the campaign, not only its asset count. Follow the same route and note level boundaries, room connections, alternate paths, encounter order, secrets, puzzles, collectibles and progression gates. A remaster can redraw every texture yet preserve design if the player still solves the same problems in the same sequence. Adding a shortcut, moving a key item or removing a mandatory encounter can alter the structure even when the scenery looks familiar.
For Tomb Raider I–III Remastered, Aspyr and Crystal Dynamics said the original jumps, secrets, enemies and puzzles were retained as designed. That claim addresses structure and challenge content; it does not mean every control or presentation detail is unchanged.
3. Pacing, repetition and challenge
Measure what the game asks the player to repeat and how much risk or time each success requires. Compare travel time, encounter frequency, puzzle reset behavior, backtracking, save points and the consequences of failure. A faster frame rate or a cleaner interface may leave the rules intact, while an option that removes encounters can change the entire progression loop.
The 2024 academic analysis by Darshana Jayemanne and Cameron Kunzelman of Final Fantasy VIII Remastered highlights this issue. Its boosts can speed up or eliminate random encounters, make the party invincible, or remove repeated magic-drawing. The authors argue that these options remove grind that the original made central to advancement. The campaign, maps and narrative remain recognizable, but the effort and risk demanded by play can be fundamentally different.

4. Controls and interface
Separate the game’s underlying spaces and rules from the way the player reaches them. Test button mapping, camera behavior, aiming, menus, targeting, quick-select functions, tutorials, subtitles, maps, health displays and feedback. A modern control scheme can make an old layout easier to navigate without changing that layout; it can also make a formerly deliberate action automatic.
Tomb Raider I–III Remastered keeps the original tank-style controls while adding camera-relative modern controls and boss health bars. Those additions let a player choose a different relationship with the same levels. Record which scheme is active and whether the new interface supplies information the original withheld.
5. Audiovisual presentation and readability
Compare more than polygon counts. Check character and enemy silhouettes, composition, lighting, animation timing, sound cues, effects, contrast and the visual signals that tell you whether an attack connected or a puzzle changed state. An aesthetic update preserves design when it clarifies or re-expresses those signals without changing the decisions they support. It can undermine design if a new effect hides an attack, a darker scene conceals a route or altered audio changes timing.
Blizzard’s 2017 account of StarCraft: Remastered describes retaining recognizable unit silhouettes while replacing old effects with richer modern ones; many effects can be toggled off. Senior 3D artist Brian Sousa compared the approach to keeping chess rules while improving how the pieces look. That is evidence of deliberate mechanical preservation, while the effect of new visual noise on an individual player’s readability still deserves a direct check.
Electronic Arts’ 2021 technical account of Mass Effect Legendary Edition explains that improving original assets and systems can create unexpected consequences when a completed game is reopened. Treat that as a testing warning: verify that revised lighting, materials, animation or effects have not obscured feedback or affected timing. The account does not establish that every visual change in the edition caused such a problem.

Compare dialogue, item descriptions, menus, subtitles, fonts, terminology, censorship, voice timing and scene order. A plot can remain intact while a revised translation changes tone or character voice. Square Enix’s localization team said in its 2023 interview that the Final Fantasy Pixel Remasters retained familiar script where possible while updating text to current standards. That describes an editorial goal, not proof that every language version contains identical wording.

A practical, repeatable comparison method
This is a useful investigative method inferred from the project accounts above, not an industry-standard certification test.
- Identify the exact builds. Write down the original and remaster, platform, region, patch number, display mode, difficulty, control scheme and accessibility or assist settings. Do not compare a patched remaster with an unpatched original without noting the difference.
- Choose equivalent moments. Select an opening tutorial, a representative traversal section, a combat encounter, a puzzle, a secret or optional route, a resource-management segment and a failure-and-retry sequence. Use the same save point or progress state where possible.
- Observe before interpreting. Record what the player actually does: inputs, timing, route, enemy response, resources spent, information displayed and outcome. Avoid treating “looks different” as “plays differently” until you can identify the affected decision.
- Run the same task repeatedly. One successful jump or battle can hide a timing change. Repeat actions that depend on precision, enemy patterns or random encounters and note consistent differences.
- Test defaults first. Play the remaster as a new owner would encounter it. Then toggle graphics modes, control schemes, assists, encounter suppression, invincibility, speed settings and interface options one at a time.
- Compare optional content separately. A photo mode, gallery or cosmetic filter usually expands presentation without changing the campaign. A shortcut, auto-aim, altered save system or boost belongs in the design assessment even when it is optional.
- Classify every difference. Mark it as preserved, changed, added, removed or unclear. Also mark whether it is mandatory, default-on or optional, and whether it changes what the player must do or merely what the player can see.
- Write a dimension-by-dimension verdict. State, for example, “structure preserved; modern controls added; challenge reduced when boosts are enabled; visual identity reinterpreted.” This is more informative than calling the whole project faithful or unfaithful.
How the evidence works in real remasters
Tomb Raider I–III Remastered: preserved structure with expanded presentation
Aspyr and Crystal Dynamics describe using the original source code and engine. They say jumps, secrets, enemies and puzzles remain as originally designed. The release also adds camera-relative modern controls, boss health bars, photo mode, updated models and environments, revised enemies, new lighting and effects, while retaining tank controls and a selectable original-graphics mode.
The appropriate conclusion is not simply “unchanged.” The evidence supports preserved level and encounter design alongside expanded control, interface and presentation choices. Test the original-graphics mode and both control schemes separately because they give the player different ways to inhabit the same spaces.

Blizzard said the project modernized StarCraft without altering its classic gameplay and atmosphere. The team retained recognizable unit shapes so players could identify them immediately, then replaced legacy effects with richer ones and made many effects switchable.
This demonstrates why pixel identity is not the only preservation test. Compare unit readability, attack cues, terrain contrast and sound timing. If those remain functionally legible, a visual overhaul may preserve the design even though screenshots are not pixel-identical.
Final Fantasy VIII Remastered: optional boosts that change the loop
The academic chapter on the 2019 remaster describes a largely familiar narrative and gameplay framework but calls attention to boosts that remove random encounters, grant invincibility or eliminate repeated magic-drawing. Use this case as a reminder to inspect menus and defaults, not just maps and story scenes. A player who never enables the boosts may experience a closer version of the original loop; a player who does enable them is making progress under materially different pressures.

Mass Effect Legendary Edition: asset improvements require systemic checks
Electronic Arts’ technical discussion explains why remastering a finished game is not a simple texture swap: changing assets or systems can break relationships elsewhere. When comparing a release of this kind, look for altered silhouettes, lighting, animation, camera framing, sound and interface feedback at the same time as you inspect resolution. The source describes the risk and process, not a universal finding that the edition changed its gameplay.

Shadow of the Colossus on PlayStation 4: terminology can mislead
In a January 26, 2018 PlayStation.Blog interview, producer Randall Lowe said the team worked to preserve how the game felt while making controls more comparable to contemporary action games. He specifically cited retaining deliberate movement and having Wander stand still to fire a bow. Studio president Marco Thrush called the release a remake and a ground-up rebuild rather than a remaster.
The lesson is methodological: classify the observed changes yourself. A project’s name, production method and preservation goal can point in different directions.
A scorecard you can fill in
| Dimension | Questions to answer | Record the result |
|---|---|---|
| Mechanics and rules | Are movement, combat, resources, enemy behavior, puzzles and failure conditions equivalent? | Preserved, changed, added, removed or unclear; include an observed example. |
| Structure and content | Are routes, rooms, encounters, secrets, puzzles and progression gates in the same places? | List every moved, omitted or newly mandatory element. |
| Pacing and challenge | Is the same repetition, risk, time and effort required? | Note encounter frequency, retries, backtracking and any boosts. |
| Controls and interface | Does the player use the same inputs and receive the same information? | Identify default and optional schemes, displays and automation. |
| Audiovisual feedback | Do visuals and sound preserve readability, timing and atmosphere? | Describe silhouette, contrast, cues, effects and toggleable modes. |
| Text and narrative | Are plot, dialogue, localization, terminology and presentation equivalent? | Record language, scene, wording and voice or subtitle differences. |
How to interpret a mixed result
Do not average unlike changes into a single percentage. Mechanics and structure carry a different kind of design information from resolution or a photo mode. Explain which layers stayed stable and which moved. “Faithful” might mean the same campaign and rules with optional modern controls; “reinterpreted” might mean the same story and levels with altered challenge, pacing or feedback.
State the conditions of your verdict. A remaster can be close when original controls and graphics are selected, but substantially different with modern controls and boosts enabled. If a platform patch or language version changes the comparison, narrow the claim to the build you examined.

Common mistakes that produce a bad verdict
- Judging from screenshots: Matching compositions do not prove matching rules, timing or enemy behavior.
- Treating source-code claims as player evidence: Preserved code can coexist with new interfaces, assists or platform behavior.
- Ignoring optional modes: A toggle can preserve the original presentation, or it can remove a core source of difficulty.
- Calling every visual change cosmetic: Contrast, silhouettes, effects and sound can carry gameplay information.
- Comparing different settings: Difficulty, control scheme, language, patch and display mode must be recorded.
- Using the label as a definition: “Remaster” and “remake” are used inconsistently; concrete changes are more reliable than terminology.
- Generalizing from one project: Developer accounts and one academic case cannot establish how often remasters preserve design across the industry.
What a defensible final assessment looks like
End with a qualified statement tied to evidence: “The remaster preserves the original’s levels, enemies and puzzles. It adds camera-relative controls and health bars, while an optional boost removes random encounters and therefore changes the progression loop when enabled. Visuals and lighting are substantially reinterpreted, but original graphics remain selectable.” That sentence tells a reader what survived, what changed, and under which settings the judgment applies.

FAQ
Is a remaster faithful if it changes the controls?
It can be faithful in structure and mechanics while changing the control layer. Report whether the original scheme remains available, whether the new scheme is default, and whether it changes timing, precision or camera behavior.
Do optional cheats or boosts count as design changes?
Yes, when they alter what the player must endure or learn. They may leave the underlying campaign intact, but encounter suppression, invincibility or automated resource work can remove repetition and risk that formed part of the original loop.
Should a remaster use the original graphics to preserve design?
Not necessarily. Updated art can preserve design if silhouettes, composition, cues, timing and readability remain functional. An original-graphics toggle is useful evidence of preservation, but it does not by itself settle the question.
Is “remake” always less faithful than “remaster”?
No. The labels describe projects inconsistently. Compare the player-facing rules, structures, pacing, controls, presentation and text, then attribute any terminology to the developer or publisher who used it.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the quickest way to compare two versions?
Play equivalent moments with identical difficulty and settings, record what the player must do and what information the game provides, then test every optional control, graphics and assist mode separately.
How should I report uncertainty?
Limit the claim to the platform, patch, language and settings you observed, and mark untested behavior as unclear rather than assuming all editions work identically.
