Check the exact game’s official PC requirements against your computer’s operating system, processor, RAM, graphics card and video memory, graphics API, and installation-drive storage. Compare the minimum and recommended tiers separately: meeting minimum is not a promise of a particular frame rate or graphics quality, and a turn-based label alone tells you little about how demanding the game is.
The dependable answer is game-specific. A turn-based RPG can still require a modern GPU, substantial VRAM, a 64-bit Windows installation, or an SSD. Use Windows’ own information screens and DxDiag to collect your hardware details, then compare each line with the publisher’s current listing.
Start with the exact game and its official PC requirements
Before you compare hardware, confirm the game’s precise edition and PC version—the one you intend to buy from its particular store or platform. Look for the developer or publisher’s current system-requirements page, and note whether it gives separate minimum and recommended specifications. Requirements for another RPG, an older release, or a different platform are not a substitute.
Check the listing’s date or patch context when one is provided. A game’s requirements can change as updates arrive, and a store page can contain different information from a support page. Verify that the edition, store version, operating system, and intended installation drive all match your purchase.

Record each listed requirement, including any conditions in the notes. A game may specify a Windows version and bitness, processor, RAM, GPU model and VRAM, DirectX or another graphics API, and required free space or an SSD. Keep any minimum and recommended values distinct. If the game’s page does not state an item, don’t infer that there is no requirement; treat that detail as unspecified by that source.
For a real example, Larian Studios’ Baldur’s Gate 3 system requirements, accessed October 13, 2026, list the following Windows specifications:
| Requirement | Minimum | Recommended |
|---|---|---|
| Operating system | Windows 10 64-bit | Windows 10 64-bit |
| Processor | Intel i5-4690 / AMD FX 8350 | Intel i7 8700K / AMD Ryzen 5 3600 |
| Memory | 8 GB RAM | 16 GB RAM |
| Graphics | Nvidia GTX 970 / AMD RX 480, with 4 GB or more VRAM | Nvidia RTX 2060 Super / AMD RX 5700 XT, with 8 GB or more VRAM |
| Graphics API | DirectX 11 | DirectX 11 |
| Storage | 150 GB available on an SSD | 150 GB available on an SSD |
Larian says its minimum specifications can run Baldur’s Gate 3 on low to medium settings and its recommended specifications can run it on high or ultra settings. Those statements apply to that game’s published requirements, not to every turn-based RPG. The specifications are a comparison example, not a universal hardware checklist.

Find your PC’s specifications in Windows
Windows’ built-in tools reveal most of the details you need. Write down the results instead of relying on memory, especially if you are comparing several games or checking more than one PC. Microsoft’s Windows device-information instructions cover system details and storage, while its DirectX instructions explain how to use DxDiag.
- Check Windows, processor, and RAM. Open Settings > System > About. Record the Windows edition and version, whether it is 32-bit or 64-bit, the processor type, and installed RAM. Compare the Windows version and bitness literally with the game’s supported OS requirement; don’t assume that a similar-sounding edition or an older version qualifies.
- Check the drive where you plan to install the game. Open Settings > System > Storage. Note the free capacity on the intended installation drive; review other drives if you may install there instead. Compare the available space with the game’s stated storage amount, and check separately whether the requirement calls for an SSD. Free capacity on one drive does not tell you whether another drive has enough room.
- Check DirectX and save a report if useful. Search Windows for dxdiag and open the DirectX Diagnostic Tool. On the System tab, note the DirectX version. Use Save All Information… if you need a report for your own comparison or troubleshooting. DirectX version alone does not show whether the graphics hardware supports every feature a game needs.
- Identify the graphics device and video memory. Review the display information in DxDiag or Windows device/display settings. Record the exact GPU model and available VRAM, then compare both against the game’s official listing. If the PC has multiple graphics devices, identify which one the game will use rather than assuming the integrated or discrete GPU is active.
On a laptop, do not stop at the processor name shown in About. The display information may list integrated and discrete graphics separately. Record both, then determine which device is intended for games. A comparison using the weaker integrated device when the game will use a discrete GPU can be misleading; the reverse mistake can make an unsupported machine look suitable.
Compare every requirement, not just the processor name
Operating system and 64-bit support
Check the precise Windows version and bitness the game lists. A requirement for a 64-bit operating system is a compatibility condition, not a performance preference. Windows’ About page shows whether the installed system is 32-bit or 64-bit; compare that result with the wording on the game’s requirements page.
Do not silently substitute a different operating system, an older Windows release, or a 32-bit installation because the other hardware appears powerful enough. If the game lists only a particular Windows configuration, report a different configuration as unconfirmed unless the publisher explicitly supports it.

Processor
Compare the processor model or family with the game’s minimum and recommended CPU. A clock-speed number by itself is not a reliable way to decide whether one processor meets another model’s requirement: clock speeds do not provide an equivalent performance score across different CPU generations and families. If the model names do not match, don’t declare them equivalent based only on GHz.

Keep the minimum and recommended CPU comparisons separate. A processor that appears close to the minimum is not automatically close to the recommended tier, and a matching CPU cannot compensate for a graphics, memory, API, or storage shortfall.
RAM
Use installed RAM from Settings > System > About and check it against both tiers. Meeting a minimum memory figure does not mean the PC also meets the recommended tier. Keep the game’s published number and your PC’s installed amount separate when you make the comparison.
GPU model and VRAM
Compare the exact graphics-card model and its video memory with the named GPU models and VRAM threshold. A chip’s name alone may not settle compatibility for every game, and the game may distinguish between GPU models or require a specific amount of VRAM. Don’t substitute a processor comparison or a general label such as “gaming graphics” for the listed graphics requirement.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Write down the full model rather than a shortened family label. For example, a requirement that names one GTX or RX model and a VRAM threshold should be compared with your exact card and its available video memory, not merely with the fact that the card is from Nvidia or AMD. If the machine reports more than one adapter, make the active gaming adapter explicit in your worksheet.
DirectX or another graphics API
If the game specifies DirectX, compare its stated requirement with the DirectX version reported by DxDiag. Microsoft cautions: “If your PC doesn’t have the right version of DirectX installed (the product box should tell you which one you need), your game might not work properly.” Microsoft Support explains how to check DirectX. An installed DirectX version does not, by itself, establish that the GPU supports every feature required by the game.
Apply the same discipline if the listing names another graphics API: record the exact API requirement and verify what the game and your hardware support. Do not turn an API version into a blanket prediction about frame rate or visual settings.
Storage amount and drive type
Check both the required free space and any drive-type condition. If the game says it requires an SSD, having enough free space on a hard drive does not satisfy that stated SSD condition. Use the capacity shown for the drive you will actually use for installation, not the total storage capacity across the whole PC.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Leave room for the requirement itself on that drive. If you have several drives, record each candidate drive’s free capacity and type rather than adding their capacities together. A game’s storage figure and SSD condition are separate checks: enough gigabytes do not erase an SSD requirement.

What minimum and recommended requirements do—and do not—tell you
Minimum and recommended specifications are separate published targets. Minimum is the game maker’s lower listed baseline; it is not a universal guarantee that the game will launch, run smoothly, or meet a particular resolution, frame rate, or settings level on every PC that appears to match. Recommended is the maker’s higher listed tier; it is not a guarantee of flawless performance in every setup.
- One or more core specs fall below minimum: treat compatibility as uncertain or unsupported by the publisher’s published baseline. A successful launch is not guaranteed by the available requirement information.
- The PC meets minimum but not recommended: you meet the lower published tier, but not the higher one. Settings or performance may be the trade-off; without game-specific performance evidence, do not promise a particular result.
- The PC meets or exceeds recommended: it meets the game’s published recommended tier. That still does not guarantee flawless performance, since configuration, drivers, thermals, resolution, patches, and other conditions can matter.
Only attach a settings claim to a game when its own documentation makes that connection. For Baldur’s Gate 3, Larian describes low-to-medium settings for minimum specifications and high-or-ultra settings for recommended specifications. Do not carry those labels over to another title.
Think of the result as a confidence level, not a benchmark score. “Meets minimum” says your listed components reach the publisher’s lower comparison point. It does not tell you whether a particular resolution, frame rate, graphics preset, or late-game scene will feel smooth. “Meets recommended” is stronger evidence against a published shortfall, but it still leaves room for drivers, heat, configuration, patches, and the display resolution you choose.
Use a comparison worksheet before you buy
Copy the game’s minimum and recommended values into a short checklist, then fill in your PC’s values from Windows. Mark each row as meeting the minimum, meeting the recommended tier, below minimum, or not yet confirmed. “Not yet confirmed” is useful: it prevents a missing detail—often the precise GPU model, VRAM, or drive type—from being mistaken for a match.
| Item to check | What to record from the game | What to record from your PC |
|---|---|---|
| Windows | Supported version and required bitness | Edition/version and 32-bit or 64-bit status from About |
| Processor | Minimum and recommended model or family | Processor type from About |
| RAM | Minimum and recommended amount | Installed RAM from About |
| Graphics | Minimum and recommended GPU models and VRAM | Exact graphics device and available VRAM |
| Graphics API | Required DirectX version or other API | DirectX version from DxDiag, plus GPU feature support if stated by the game |
| Storage | Required free space and SSD/HDD condition | Free space and drive type on the planned installation drive |
Resolve unknowns before treating the comparison as complete. If the requirements name a particular GPU but you have only a generic or abbreviated display name, identify the exact model. If the game calls for an SSD and you have not confirmed which drive will hold the installation, check that first. Avoid buying an upgrade until you know which specific requirement is short and that the proposed change addresses it.
Save your notes with the game title, edition, store, and date you checked. That makes it easier to repeat the comparison after a patch or when considering a second PC. Keep the game’s values and your PC’s values in separate columns so a minimum figure is not accidentally read as your machine’s measured capability.
Common mistakes that produce a misleading answer
- Assuming turn-based means lightweight. Turn structure describes how play proceeds; it does not establish graphics demands or compatibility. Use that game’s PC requirements.
- Checking only one spec. A CPU that appears to match cannot make up for insufficient RAM, an unsupported GPU, a missing API requirement, or a storage shortfall. Compare every listed category.
- Comparing a family name instead of the exact hardware. Record the GPU and processor model shown on your machine. Do not treat unlike generations as equivalent based on clock speed or a broad device label.
- Counting total storage instead of install-drive space. Compare free space on the drive that will actually contain the game, and apply any SSD condition separately.
- Assuming DirectX version proves graphics compatibility. DxDiag helps verify the installed version, but that number alone does not establish that the GPU supports all required features.
- Using another game’s specifications or an old listing. Check the precise game edition, current patch-era requirements, store/platform version, and intended install drive. Requirements for one RPG cannot stand in for another.
- Treating an online checker as the authority. A checker can be convenient, but use the game maker’s published requirements as the controlling comparison. No third-party checker is endorsed here.
- Guessing when a field is missing. An unstated VRAM amount, API feature, or drive condition is not proof that your PC passes. Mark it unconfirmed and look for clarification from the game’s official documentation.
Example: deciding whether your PC meets Baldur’s Gate 3’s published tier
Suppose you want to know, “Can my computer run Baldur’s Gate 3?” Start with Larian’s current Windows requirements, not with the fact that it is an RPG. For this example, the page accessed October 13, 2026 lists Windows 10 64-bit, an Intel i5-4690 or AMD FX 8350, 8 GB RAM, an Nvidia GTX 970 or AMD RX 480 with at least 4 GB VRAM, DirectX 11, and 150 GB available on an SSD at minimum. Its recommended tier lists an Intel i7 8700K or AMD Ryzen 5 3600, 16 GB RAM, an Nvidia RTX 2060 Super or AMD RX 5700 XT with at least 8 GB VRAM, DirectX 11, and 150 GB on an SSD.

Is meeting the minimum requirement enough to buy the game confidently?
No. It means your recorded hardware reaches the publisher’s lower listed baseline, but it does not guarantee a successful launch, smooth play, a particular frame rate, resolution, or graphics preset. Treat a below-minimum result as uncertain or unsupported by that baseline.
What if my processor model is different but has a similar clock speed?
Do not decide from GHz alone. Compare the processor model or family with the game’s listed CPU. Clock speed is not an equivalent performance score across different generations and families.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsDo I need to meet the recommended tier?
Minimum and recommended are different targets. A PC can meet minimum while falling short of recommended; the likely tradeoff may involve settings or performance, but the game’s own documentation is needed for any specific settings claim.
How do I check the graphics card and VRAM?
Review display information in DxDiag or Windows device/display settings. Record the exact GPU model and available VRAM, then compare both with the game’s named models and threshold. If multiple GPUs appear, verify which one the game will use.
Does having the right DirectX version prove the game will work?
No. DxDiag reports the installed DirectX version, but that number alone does not establish that the GPU supports every feature the game requires. Compare the API requirement and any stated feature conditions with the hardware.
What if I have enough total storage but not on one drive?
Compare free space on the drive that will contain the installation. Do not add free space from separate drives, and check separately whether the game requires an SSD. Enough room on a hard drive does not satisfy an SSD condition.

Make the purchase decision with the limits in view
Once each line is confirmed, report the outcome precisely: below the published minimum on a named item, meets the minimum but not recommended tier, or meets the published recommended tier. If any necessary PC detail or game requirement is missing, call that item unconfirmed rather than guessing. This gives you a defensible compatibility check without turning system requirements into a promise of frame rate, resolution, or guaranteed performance.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is meeting the minimum requirement enough to buy the game confidently?
No. It reaches the publisher’s lower baseline but does not guarantee launch success, smooth play, a specific frame rate, resolution, or graphics preset.
What if my processor model is different but has a similar clock speed?
Compare the exact processor model or family. Clock speed alone is not an equivalent performance measure across different generations.
How do I check my GPU and VRAM?
Use DxDiag or Windows display information, record the exact GPU model and available VRAM, and compare both with the game’s requirements.
Does the correct DirectX version prove compatibility?
No. DirectX version alone does not show that the GPU supports every feature the game requires.
What if I have enough storage across multiple drives?
Check free space on the specific installation drive and verify any SSD requirement separately; capacities on different drives should not be combined.
Should I trust an online compatibility checker?
Treat it as a convenience only. The game’s current official requirements should control your decision.
The Bottom Line
Find the exact game’s current official requirements, then compare Windows version and bitness, CPU, RAM, GPU and VRAM, graphics API, and free space on the actual installation drive. Separate minimum from recommended, mark unknowns instead of guessing, and describe the result as a published-tier comparison—not a guarantee of performance.
