Do not judge a text by its logo, display name, spelling, or sales tone. A message can look as though it came from a familiar company and still be an impersonation. The safest test is whether you expected the contact, what the sender wants you to do, and whether you can confirm the claim through an app, website, or phone number you obtained independently.
Until you verify it, do not click its link, call its number, reply, pay, or provide account, identity, or payment information. If the message is unwanted or fraudulent, report it and block or filter it after you have preserved any details you may need.
The quickest safe decision
Use this sequence when an unexpected message arrives:
- Pause. Do not tap links, call numbers in the text, reply, or open an attachment.
- Check expectation. Did you recently place the order, open the account, request the job information, enter the promotion, or subscribe to messages?
- Identify the requested action. Urgency, payment demands, account details, one-time codes, or a request to “fix” a problem are warning signs.
- Verify out of band. Open the company’s known app, type a website address yourself, or use a trusted number from an existing statement, card, or prior record.
- Act only after confirmation. If the business confirms the notice or offer, use the independently opened channel. If it cannot confirm it, stop interacting with the text.
- Report and filter. In the United States, forward suspicious texts to
7726(SPAM), use your messaging app’s report-junk feature, and report suspected fraud to the Federal Trade Commission.
This process identifies a safe response; it does not prove who technically sent the message. Sender identity cannot be authenticated reliably from the text alone.

What separates spam, a promotion, and a legitimate message?
| Category | What it means | Evidence you can use | Safe response |
|---|---|---|---|
| Spam | An unwanted message, which may be advertising, a nuisance, or a scam. | You did not request it, or the sender and purpose are unclear. Unwanted does not automatically mean criminal fraud. | Do not engage through the message. Report, block, or filter it. |
| Promotion | A marketing offer such as a discount, sale, or prize-style invitation. | You may have knowingly subscribed, but the commercial tone and branding do not prove the sender is genuine. | Confirm the offer in the company’s known app or website. Use only an independently verified opt-out route. |
| Legitimate business message | A real notice connected to an account, transaction, delivery, or service you recognize. | Your recent activity and the company’s independent confirmation match the message. | Continue through the verified channel, not through a suspicious link or number in the text. |
| Impersonation or text scam | A fraudulent message pretending to be a business or institution. | Unexpected contact, pressure, unusual payment, sensitive-data requests, or failure to verify independently. | Stop interaction, report it, and block or filter it. |
These categories can overlap. A real promotional text can be unsolicited, and a scam can imitate a routine delivery or fraud alert. The practical question is not “Which label fits perfectly?” but “What action is safe before the sender is independently confirmed?”
Warning signs that deserve a pause
You were not expecting the contact
An unrequested delivery alert, toll notice, job offer, prize message, account warning, or transaction question deserves scrutiny. Scammers choose plausible events that many people recognize. Federal Trade Commission reporting for 2024 included fake delivery problems, phony job opportunities, fake fraud alerts, unpaid toll notices, and “wrong number” texts among the five leading reported text-scam types.
An unexpected message is a warning sign, not proof of fraud. You might receive a genuine notice after a transaction you forgot about, or a business may use a new messaging system. Verify before acting either way.
The text creates urgency or fear
“Act now,” “your account will close,” “payment is overdue,” or “fraud was detected” language is designed to compress your decision time. Pressure is especially concerning when the message tells you to click, call, reply, or pay immediately.
It asks for sensitive information
Do not provide passwords, one-time codes, account numbers, identity details, or payment information in response to an unexpected text. The Federal Trade Commission’s consumer guide states: “Legitimate companies won’t ask for information about your account by text.” That statement is practical guidance for handling an unexpected request; it is not a method for authenticating every message from every company.
It demands an unusual payment method
Requests for gift cards, cryptocurrency, wire transfers, or payment-app transfers are strong danger signals in an impersonation scenario, particularly when combined with urgency. A familiar company name does not make an unusual payment request safe.
It supplies a link or phone number you are expected to trust
A link can lead to a fake sign-in page, and a phone number can route you to an impostor. Do not use either path until you have checked the company independently. If the message might be real, open the official app yourself, type a known address, or use a number on an existing statement or payment card.

The wording looks awkward
Spelling, grammar, odd punctuation, and unnatural phrasing can be clues, but they are not a reliable test. Professional-looking writing can be fraudulent, and a genuine automated message can contain mistakes. Treat wording as one observation among several, never as proof.
Why a familiar sender name proves nothing
Messaging systems can display a business name, logo, or short code that looks familiar. Impersonators use those visual cues to exploit trust. The name shown on your screen is not independent evidence that the organization sent the message.
Look for corroboration instead: a matching event in the company’s app, an account notice you reached through a known website, or confirmation from a number you already trust. If the company says there is no issue or offer, stop interacting with the text even if its branding appears convincing.
A step-by-step method for deciding what to do
1. Record the context without interacting
Read the notification preview if necessary, but do not tap links or buttons. Note what the message claims: delivery, bank activity, toll payment, employment, prize, account security, or a promotion. Ask whether a real event in your life matches it.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
2. Examine the requested action
Classify the demand:
- Informational: a status update with no request. It may still be unwanted or spoofed, so verify if the subject matters.
- Low-risk marketing: a discount or new-product announcement. Confirm that you knowingly subscribed and reach the offer through the company’s established channel.
- Account or payment action: a login, code, refund, fee, payment, or identity request. Treat it as high risk until independently confirmed.
- Urgent contact: a command to call, reply, or click immediately. Pause and verify elsewhere.
3. Check the sender without trusting the display name
Look at the number or sender details for context, but do not treat a recognizable name, area code, or branding as authentication. A strange sender can be suspicious, yet a familiar-looking sender can also be forged.
4. Verify through a route you choose
- Open the company’s official app from your phone, not from the text.
- Type a website address you already know, rather than selecting the message’s link.
- Use a phone number from an existing statement, card, contract, or saved business record.
- Check whether the same alert, order, appointment, or offer appears in the verified account.
- Ask the company to confirm the message. Do not read back sensitive information to an unverified caller or texter.
If the verified channel shows no matching event, treat the text as unwanted or fraudulent and end the interaction.
5. Choose the response
| What independent verification shows | Recommended response |
|---|---|
| The company confirms the notice or offer. | Use the app, typed website, or trusted number to complete any needed action. Ignore the original link and number. |
| The company cannot find a matching notice. | Do not reply or call the text sender. Report, block, and filter it. |
| You cannot verify the sender or event. | Leave the message unanswered and report it if it appears suspicious or unwanted. |
| You knowingly subscribed to marketing. | Use the company’s independently verified unsubscribe or notification settings. Do not reply “STOP” to an unknown sender. |
How to recognize common message scenarios
Delivery and package alerts
A text may claim that an address is incomplete, a delivery fee is due, or a package is on hold. Check your order in the retailer’s or carrier’s app or by typing a known website address. Do not enter address, card, or login details on the text’s page.

Bank or fraud alerts
A fake fraud alert tries to make you panic and call a number controlled by the scammer. Open your bank’s app or use the number printed on your card. Never provide a verification code or move money because a text told you to.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteUnpaid toll notices
An unexpected toll demand can look official and time-sensitive. Verify through the toll authority’s known website or an existing account. A demand for immediate payment through an unfamiliar link is not independently established by the agency’s name in the text.
Job opportunities
Unexpected recruiting or task-work messages can ask for personal information, deposits, or unusual payments. Confirm the employer through contact information you find independently and do not send identity or financial details through the text.
“Wrong number” conversations
A message that starts as an apparent mistake may turn into an invitation, investment pitch, or request for money. You do not need to continue the conversation to determine its legitimacy. Do not reply to an unknown sender; report or block it.
Discounts, coupons, and prizes
A promotion can be genuine, unsolicited marketing, or an impersonation. Search for the offer in the business’s known app or website. A prize that requires a fee, unusual payment, or account information should be treated as a high-risk request until independently confirmed.

Promotional text: marketing or scam?
Commercial language alone cannot answer that question. Use three separate checks:
- Permission: Do you remember signing up for texts from this business? If not, it may simply be unsolicited marketing—or an impersonation.
- Identity: Can the business confirm the campaign through its known app, website, or trusted number?
- Collection: Does the message ask for credentials, payment, or personal information? Do not provide those details through the text.
If you did subscribe, manage messaging preferences through an account or website you opened independently. For an unknown sender, do not reply even to say “STOP”; a reply confirms that the number is active and is not a safe verification method. Follow opt-out instructions only after confirming the business and reaching its settings through a trusted route.

Reporting and filtering unwanted texts in the United States
Forward to 7726 (SPAM)
US mobile users can forward a suspicious text to 7726, which spells “SPAM.” This is a reporting route, not a verification service; do not wait for a reply before protecting your accounts.
Use your messaging app’s report function
Many messaging apps provide “report junk,” “report spam,” or a similar option. Labels and menus vary by device and operating-system version. Use the report function available in your app, then block the sender if appropriate.
Report suspected fraud to the FTC
Use the Federal Trade Commission’s fraud-reporting service, ReportFraud.ftc.gov, for suspected scams. The short code and FTC route described here are US-specific; other countries use different regulators, numbers, and rules.
Turn on filtering
Phone settings, wireless-provider tools, and call-blocking apps may reduce unwanted texts. Availability, privacy terms, compatibility, and controls vary by device and provider. Filtering reduces exposure; it cannot authenticate every message, and a legitimate alert can occasionally be filtered.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What the latest US data says—and what it does not say
The FTC’s April 2025 spotlight, based on 2024 reports, said consumers reported $470 million in losses to text scams in 2024. That is reported loss, not a complete estimate of all harm; the agency cautioned that reports likely represent only a fraction of actual losses. The FTC said the amount was more than five times the 2020 figure.
The same spotlight identified fake delivery problems, phony job opportunities, fake fraud alerts, unpaid toll notices, and “wrong number” texts as the five leading reported text-scam types. The FTC estimated that these categories represented about half of text frauds reported to its Consumer Sentinel Network in 2024. The agency hand-coded a random sample of 1,000 reports with narrative descriptions, so the categories add detail to the annual data rather than replacing the FTC’s standard subcategories. They are not a ranking for 2026.

If you already clicked or replied
Stop using the message’s link, number, and reply path. Close the page, do not enter additional information, and move to the company’s app, typed website, or trusted number to check whether the claimed issue is real. If you disclosed account or payment information, contact the affected company through that independently obtained route and explain what was shared. Report the message even if you are unsure whether a loss occurred.
Do not continue a conversation merely because the sender appears helpful or knows some information about you. Apparent familiarity is not independent confirmation.
A compact decision checklist
- Was the text unexpected?
- Does it create urgency, fear, or a deadline?
- Does it ask you to click, call, reply, pay, or share sensitive information?
- Is the payment method unusual, such as a gift card, cryptocurrency, wire transfer, or payment app?
- Are you relying only on a display name, logo, or familiar company branding?
- Can you confirm the claim in a known app, typed website, or previously trusted phone number?
- If it is marketing, did you knowingly subscribe?
- Have you avoided replying to an unknown sender?
- After verification, should you report, block, or filter the message?
A “yes” to the warning-sign questions does not prove fraud, but it raises the cost of acting before verification. A verified channel is the deciding evidence.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a legitimate company ever text me?
Yes. A business may send a genuine service or marketing message, especially after you initiated a transaction or subscribed. Confirm it through the company’s app, website, or a phone number you already trust rather than relying on the text’s branding.
Is an unsolicited promotional text automatically a scam?
No. It may be unwanted marketing, a legitimate offer sent without your expectation, or an impersonation. Do not click or provide information until the business independently confirms the offer.
Should I reply “STOP” to a suspicious text?
Do not reply to an unknown sender, even with “STOP.” If you knowingly subscribed, use the business’s independently verified notification or unsubscribe settings.
Are spelling mistakes proof that a text is fraudulent?
No. Awkward wording is only one possible clue. Professional writing can still be fraudulent, and genuine automated messages can contain errors.
