The most reliable first check is the game’s Steam store-page AI disclosure. It is a developer-provided statement, not an independent forensic audit. Read whether the disclosure covers pre-generated or live-generated content, then corroborate it with credits, developer documentation, production notes, and rights or consent records. Screenshots, a detector score, an unusual voice, or a missing disclosure cannot prove AI use by themselves.

What Steam’s AI disclosure can—and cannot—tell you

Valve’s Steamworks Content Survey asks developers about “the use of AI in creating content that ships with your game, and is consumed by players.” Its examples include artwork, sound, narrative and localization. Valve also says that efficiency gains from AI tools are not the focus of this section. That distinction matters: a studio may use an assistant for brainstorming, coding autocomplete or internal drafts without shipping AI-generated player-facing content.

Valve’s current wording, described in a January 2026 report as a clearer separation between player-consumed output and behind-the-scenes efficiency, gives you a useful boundary. The question is not simply whether anyone at the studio opened an AI tool. It is what content reached players, where it appears, and whether it is generated before release or during play.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Valve separates two kinds of generation:

Valve category When generation happens What a player may encounter What to look for
Pre-generated During development, before release AI-assisted images, textures, models, dialogue, music, localization or other files included in the build The named asset class, scope and any tools or workflow described by the developer
Live-generated While the game is running Text, images, voices or other content produced interactively in response to play The disclosure’s description of guardrails, user inputs and the systems generating content

Live generation deserves extra attention because Valve expects developers to describe guardrails. Record what inputs are accepted, what the system can produce, and what moderation or filtering is described. A fixed line rendered during development is a different technical and editorial risk from dialogue created from a player’s prompt.

Valve says disclosed AI output is reviewed under the same standards as non-AI content, and Steam products must follow its content rules whether or not AI use is disclosed. A disclosure therefore tells you what the developer reported; it does not certify that every asset was independently examined. It also does not tell you that every part of the game was made with AI.

How to find and record a game’s Steam disclosure

  1. Open the game’s Steam store page in a desktop or mobile browser. Use the store listing rather than relying on a retailer description, a forum post or a screenshot.
  2. Search the page for “AI,” “generative” or “Generated.” Browser find (Ctrl+F on Windows or Linux, Command+F on macOS) is usually faster than scanning the entire listing.
  3. Copy the exact wording. Save the text and the date you checked it. Small wording changes can alter whether the statement concerns shipped assets, live generation or both.
  4. Identify the timing. Record whether the page says pre-generated, live-generated or uses both terms.
  5. Identify the asset class. Note every category named: art, sound or voice, narrative, localization, interface, marketing material or another type of content.
  6. Check the page’s update date against patch notes. A game can add, remove or replace content after launch, so compare the disclosure with the latest developer update.

Keep a simple evidence log: the store URL, the page date, the exact disclosure, the asset category, and links to matching statements. If the wording later changes, you can distinguish a new disclosure from a changed interpretation. This is especially important for early-access games whose art, dialogue and localization may be replaced repeatedly.

Look beyond the prominent description. Store pages can contain developer announcements, community items, screenshots, videos and marketing material. Valve’s framework treats player-consumed content broadly, so note whether the statement refers to material in the executable, the store page, community assets or all of them. Do not assume that a disclosure about promotional art covers in-game textures, or that a statement about localization covers the original voice performance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If no statement appears, the accurate conclusion is no confirmed public disclosure found. Do not convert that absence into “the game does not use AI.” A disclosure can be incomplete, newly added, removed during a page edit or absent because the developer considers its use outside the survey’s player-facing scope.

How to investigate AI-generated art

Artwork includes more than character illustrations. Depending on the disclosure, it can include textures, 3D models, icons, interface elements, loading screens, promotional images and community or store assets that players see. Treat each asset class separately; a statement about marketing art does not automatically cover in-game textures.

Use an evidence ladder

Confidence level Evidence Appropriate wording
Confirmed or strongly corroborated The developer names an AI tool or workflow, identifies shipped images, textures, models or UI, and the Steam disclosure agrees; project documentation also supplies provenance. “The developer disclosed AI assistance for [named assets].”
Moderate Credits or production notes mention AI-assisted asset creation, but the statement does not define which files or how much of the game is affected. “AI assistance is documented, but its scope is not specified.”
Weak lead Visual artifacts such as malformed text, inconsistent fingers, repeated details, abrupt style changes or a reverse-image-search match with no source statement. “The image raises a question; authorship is unconfirmed.”

Visual clues are useful for deciding what to ask the developer, not for assigning authorship. A human artist can make errors, reuse stock material or apply filters; an AI-assisted image can be heavily redrawn. A reverse-image result may identify a source image without showing how the final asset was made. Compression, scaling and post-processing can also erase or create apparent artifacts, so compare the highest-quality source you can obtain and preserve the original file.

Check provenance and human contribution

Look for a named artist, asset list, production diary, tool disclosure or explanation of what was generated and what was edited by people. Provenance should answer four questions: which asset was generated, which tool or model was used, who selected or modified the output, and what source or training-rights information the creator can provide.

Ask whether the disclosed use applies to the final shipped file or only to exploratory concepts. A concept image that never entered the game is a different claim from a texture, model or interface element installed in the release. Also separate a generated base from human lettering, compositing, paint-over, animation, rigging or layout. Those details do not erase AI involvement, but they affect how precisely it should be described.

The U.S. Copyright Office’s 2025 report announcement states: “The outputs of generative AI can be protected by copyright only where a human author has determined sufficient expressive elements.” It also explains that prompting alone is not enough. That is a copyright standard, not an AI detector, but it helps distinguish a raw output from a human-directed, arranged or modified work. Do not infer the legal status of an entire game from one image.

How to investigate AI-generated voices and sound

Voice evidence requires two separate questions: does a performance sound synthetic, and was a digital voice used with authorization? The first is difficult to judge by ear; the second requires documentation.

  1. Read the Steam disclosure for “sound,” “voice” or live-generation language. Copy any description of dialogue, narration, dynamic lines or player-triggered generation.
  2. Read the voice cast and localization credits. A named actor does not by itself prove that every line was performed by that person, but an unexplained absence of cast information is a reason to seek clarification rather than proof of synthesis.
  3. Search the developer’s public materials. Check its site, press kit, Kickstarter updates and patch notes for terms such as text-to-speech, synthetic performance, voice cloning, digital replica or a named voice vendor.
  4. Look for consent and licensing language. Ask whether the actor authorized digital simulation, which uses are covered, how compensation works and whether the permission is limited by character, language or platform.
  5. Separate shipped from live-generated speech. A fixed line rendered during development is different from a voice generated dynamically from player input.

Read the audio credits with the same care as art credits. A studio may credit a performer for reference recordings while using a synthesized voice for the final lines, or use different methods for different languages. Conversely, an actor may perform every line but receive heavy editing, ADR, pitch processing or noise reduction. A credit list is evidence to compare with the disclosure, not an automatic answer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

SAG-AFTRA says members should work under a union contract when a voice or likeness is digitally simulated and argues for consent and compensation. That position does not establish what a particular game did, but it identifies the records that matter: authorization, scope, payment and control of a digital replica.

A robotic timbre, unusually clean pronunciation or identical emotional phrasing is only a lead. Human performances may use ADR, noise reduction, pitch processing or deliberate stylization, while synthetic voices can be edited until they sound natural. The U.S. Copyright Office’s work on digital replicas covers realistic but false depictions in images, video and audio, which is why provenance and authorization are distinct from a listener’s impression.

How to investigate AI-assisted code

Code is the least observable category from a finished executable. Compiled binaries normally do not reveal whether a programmer used an assistant, and bugs, comments, architecture or coding style cannot prove that an AI tool was involved.

Valve’s survey emphasizes content shipped to and consumed by players; ordinary development-efficiency gains are not its focus. Record a coding claim only when the developer connects it to the product or documents the workflow. Avoid treating “AI-powered” marketing for a game feature as evidence that the studio’s own source code was generated by AI; those are separate claims.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Strongest sources for a code claim

  • An explicit developer statement naming the coding assistant and describing what reached the released build.
  • A technical postmortem that explains where generated code was accepted, reviewed, rewritten or removed.
  • Repository history, build documentation or engineering notes that show AI-assisted commits and human review.

If a studio says it used AI for brainstorming, autocomplete or test generation but shipped no generated content, preserve that distinction. “AI-assisted development” is not the same claim as “the game’s code was generated by AI,” and neither statement says anything about the game’s art or voices.

Do not infer code use from a familiar bug pattern or from a developer’s general statement that it experiments with AI. Ask what tool was used, during which stage, whether suggestions were reviewed, and whether any generated material remained in the build. If no direct documentation exists, the responsible label is unconfirmed, even when the executable behaves in a way that seems machine-produced.

Why AI detectors are not proof

Image, audio, video and text detectors can flag material for further checking. Their accuracy varies with the model, file format, editing history, language, compression and the detector’s training data. The field remains active, with unresolved challenges in detecting multimedia generated by large AI models.

Use detector output as one lead alongside metadata and provenance. Do not publish a percentage score as a verdict, and do not treat a detector’s “human” result as clearance. Running the same file through several detectors does not automatically create independent confirmation: many tools share similar training assumptions and can fail on the same edited or compressed material.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A practical standard is triangulation:

  1. First-party disclosure: the exact Steam wording and its date.
  2. Developer or publisher statement: a post, interview, technical note or support response that identifies the use.
  3. Credits or production documentation: named artists, actors, tools, asset lists or workflow records.
  4. Technical or rights evidence: repository history, metadata, provenance, consent or licensing documents.

When only a visual clue or detector score exists, label the result unconfirmed. When several independent sources agree but the asset scope is unclear, say strongly corroborated, scope unspecified. Explain which evidence supports the label and which questions remain unanswered.

How to compare two games fairly

A useful comparison does not collapse every form of AI use into one label. Put the same questions to both games:

Comparison axis What to record
Where AI appears Art, voices or other sound, narrative, localization, interface, marketing, code or live player-facing generation
When generation happens Pre-generated during development, live during play, or both
Player exposure Files shipped in the game, store or community assets, or content generated interactively
Transparency Exact Steam wording, named tools, named assets and the history of updates to the disclosure
Rights and provenance Credited humans, voice consent or licensing, source records and evidence of creative modification
Confidence Confirmed, strongly corroborated, plausible or unconfirmed, with the reason for the rating

For example, one game might disclose pre-generated background art while another discloses live-generated dialogue. Calling both simply “AI games” hides the difference in player exposure, technical risk and rights questions. A third game might disclose only localization assistance, which should not be presented as evidence that its original writing, art or code was generated.

Use identical date ranges when comparing update histories. A disclosure added after launch may explain a later patch rather than the original release. Note whether each developer names a tool, names specific assets, identifies human contributors and explains consent or licensing. Transparency itself is a comparison axis, but it is not proof that an undisclosed game used no AI.

What the published numbers mean

Ichiro Lambe’s 2025 analysis, reported by PC Gamer, counted 7,818 Steam games that disclosed generative-AI use—about 7% of just under 115,000 Steam games. The same analysis said a little under 20% of games released in 2025 had disclosed generative-AI use, and around 60% of disclosures concerned visual assets.

These are dated, disclosure-based counts, not a census of every AI-assisted project. They measure what developers reported under the applicable Steam framework. A game can fall outside the count if its use was behind the scenes, if the developer did not disclose it, or if the page had not yet been updated. The figures also do not mean that 60% of all game content was visual AI output; they describe the share of disclosures associated with visual assets.

A practical reporting checklist

  • Save the Steam page wording and the date checked.
  • Classify the use as pre-generated, live-generated or both.
  • Name the affected asset class instead of labeling the whole game.
  • Seek a developer statement, credits or production record.
  • For voices, verify actor consent, licensing and digital-replica scope.
  • For code, require documentation that connects assistance to the shipped product.
  • Use detectors and visual or audio anomalies only as leads.
  • State “no confirmed public disclosure” when the page is silent.
  • Use confidence labels that match the evidence.

When contacting a developer, ask narrow questions that can be answered precisely: Which shipped assets used AI? Was generation pre-generated or live? Which tool or vendor was involved? Were actors or artists credited? What consent or license covers a digital replica? Was AI coding assistance limited to internal work? Specific questions are more useful than asking whether the entire game is “AI-made.”

Preserve screenshots or archived text where possible, but identify them as records of a page at a particular date. Recheck after major updates, because replacing a portrait, adding a language or introducing a live-generation feature can change the relevant disclosure.

The defensible conclusion is usually specific: “The developer disclosed pre-generated AI-assisted interface art,” “live-generated dialogue is disclosed, but the voice provider is not named,” or “AI coding assistance was acknowledged for internal development; no shipped generated content was identified.” Those statements tell readers what is known without turning suspicion into proof.

Frequently asked questions

Can a Steam disclosure prove that a game uses AI?

It is the strongest routine first-party starting point, but it is still a developer disclosure rather than an independent audit. Confirm the category, timing and named assets with credits or documentation.

Does a missing AI notice prove that a game is AI-free?

No. Report only that you found no confirmed public disclosure. The page may be silent because the use was behind the scenes, the disclosure is incomplete or the listing has not been updated.

Can I prove AI art from hands, text or style inconsistencies?

No. Those details can justify a question, but they can result from human mistakes, stock material, filters, compression or later editing. Authorship requires stronger provenance or a direct statement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does a named voice actor rule out a synthetic voice?

No. The actor may have provided reference or some lines while a digital replica was used elsewhere. Check the disclosure, detailed credits and consent or licensing terms.

Can a detector identify AI-written code in a game?

Not reliably from the finished executable. A developer statement, repository history, postmortem or build documentation is stronger evidence. Gameplay feel and coding style are not proof.

What is the fairest label when evidence is incomplete?

Use a confidence label such as unconfirmed, plausible or strongly corroborated, scope unspecified, and state exactly which sources support it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where is the AI disclosure on a Steam page?

Open the store page and search for “AI,” “generative” or “Generated.” Copy the exact statement, note its date, and record whether it describes pre-generated or live-generated content and which asset class it names.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What is the difference between pre-generated and live-generated AI content?

Pre-generated content is made during development and shipped in the game. Live-generated content is produced while the game runs, often from player input; Valve expects developers to describe guardrails for that use.

Can a robotic voice prove that a game uses AI?

No. Processing, ADR and performance direction can make a human recording sound unusual, while synthetic voices can sound natural. Check disclosures, credits, vendor statements and consent records.

What evidence is strongest for AI-assisted code?

An explicit developer statement supported by a technical postmortem, repository history or build documentation that explains what AI-assisted code reached the released product.

How should I report a detector result?

Treat it as a lead, not a verdict. Explain the file, tool and limitations, then seek independent disclosure, developer statements, credits, provenance or rights evidence.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Start with the exact Steam disclosure, then verify the named asset class and timing through developer statements, credits, provenance and consent records. Distinguish pre-generated content from live generation and internal coding assistance, and call a claim unconfirmed when it rests only on visual clues, audio impressions, detector scores or a silent store page.
