You can tell that a spacecraft is moving toward reentry when its orbit shows a sustained loss of altitude, particularly a falling perigee (the orbit’s lowest point), and an authoritative agency publishes a current, object-specific forecast. One altitude reading cannot tell you exactly when reentry will occur. Atmospheric density, solar activity, spacecraft orientation, exposed area, tracking quality and the object’s construction all affect the result.

This guide explains how to identify the object, verify a real decay trend, read an agency forecast and distinguish atmospheric entry from breakup and possible ground impact.

What “reenter” means

Reentry is not a single instant with one universally accepted altitude. It is a sequence: a spacecraft’s orbit descends, it encounters increasingly dense air, aerodynamic heating and loads rise, and the vehicle may break apart. Some material burns up; dense or heat-resistant components can continue downward.

Agencies use different reference points for different purposes. The European Space Agency (ESA) describes a rough atmospheric interface near 120 km for a spacecraft in a circular orbit. NASA’s Orbital Debris Program Office discusses a typical breakup range of about 84–72 km, where aerodynamic forces can exceed structural limits. Those figures describe different milestones, not a universal test that proves a particular spacecraft has already reentered.

Milestone What it describes How to use it
Orbit decay The spacecraft’s tracked orbit, especially its perigee, is getting lower over repeated observations. Best early evidence that natural reentry is approaching.
Atmospheric interface A rough boundary used in some analyses; ESA cites about 120 km for a circular orbit. A model-dependent reference, not a precise universal start time.
Breakup Structural failure as aerodynamic loads and heating increase; NASA cites roughly 84–72 km as a common range. A later phase than the atmospheric interface.
Ground footprint The possible area where surviving fragments could fall. Requires specialist survivability and trajectory modeling, not altitude alone.

The evidence that matters most

1. A sustained downward trend

Repeated orbit solutions should show the spacecraft losing altitude over time. A single low reading may reflect a different measurement, a revised orbit solution or a temporary modeling difference. Look for a sequence of observations with a downward trend, preferably over several updates.

2. A falling perigee

Perigee is the lowest point of an orbit. When perigee drops into denser portions of the upper atmosphere, drag becomes stronger and removes orbital energy more quickly. NASA explains that lowering perigee accelerates orbital decay because atmospheric drag then brings the spacecraft into the atmosphere.

Do not judge the situation from apogee (the highest point) alone. An orbit can have a high apogee while its perigee falls rapidly. The combination of perigee, apogee and their changes over time gives a much clearer picture.

3. An object-specific forecast

A forecast must identify the actual spacecraft by its official name or catalog identifier. Statements about a broad class such as “old satellites” cannot establish the fate of one vehicle. ESA’s Space Debris Office publishes upcoming and past reentry information and updates estimates as tracking and orbit-prediction inputs improve.

4. The update time and uncertainty window

Read when the forecast was issued or last updated, then note the entire predicted window rather than only its midpoint. Reentry times can move as new observations arrive. A forecast that is several days old may no longer represent the best estimate, particularly during periods of changing solar activity.

A step-by-step method for checking a spacecraft

  1. Identify the object. Record the official spacecraft name and catalog identifier. Resolve aliases before comparing any orbit or forecast; two objects can have similar names.
  2. Open a dated orbit history. Use a recognized tracking or agency record that provides observation dates. Confirm that you are looking at one object and not a reentry event, launch vehicle stage or another catalog entry.
  3. Record perigee at each update. Make a short table with the date, perigee, apogee if available, and the source’s orbit solution. The key question is whether perigee is consistently declining.
  4. Check for a genuine trend. Separate a sustained decline from one outlier. If later solutions rise again, the earlier value may have reflected measurement or modeling uncertainty rather than a physical jump in the orbit.
  5. Read the latest official reentry forecast. Check the predicted date or time window, issue time, confidence or uncertainty information and the agency’s notes about tracking. ESA states that “The quality of this process can be improved through tracking data and sophisticated orbit prediction tools.”
  6. Compare the forecast with the decay evidence. A falling perigee and a current object-specific forecast reinforce each other. If they conflict, favor neither automatically: check whether the orbit history and forecast were generated at different times or use different assumptions.
  7. Separate entry, breakup and impact questions. Determine which milestone the forecast addresses. An atmospheric-interface estimate does not specify where fragments land, and a breakup estimate does not prove that every component has burned up.
  8. Recheck near the predicted window. Forecasts are revised as tracking data arrive. Use the timestamp on the newest update and do not treat a historical prediction as the current status.

How to read an agency forecast

A useful forecast contains more than a date. Compare forecasts or successive updates using the same four fields:

Field What to look for Why it matters
Observation or update time The date and time of the orbit solution or forecast issue. Older information may be superseded by new tracking data.
Orbit/perigee trend Whether the lowest point is falling and how quickly the trend changes. Shows whether atmospheric drag is becoming more important.
Predicted time window The full interval, not just a central estimate. Communicates uncertainty honestly; the window can widen or shift.
Defined milestone Atmospheric interface, breakup or a fragment-impact footprint. Prevents a date for one phase being mistaken for another.

Some public pages list past reentries as well as upcoming events. A past event can explain how an agency reports its estimates, but it cannot establish the current state of a different spacecraft. Always match the forecast to the object identifier and its update time.

When will it reenter?

There is no reliable answer from altitude alone. To estimate timing, analysts propagate the object’s orbit forward while modeling atmospheric drag, solar-driven density changes and the spacecraft’s aerodynamic characteristics. The result is a time window, not a guaranteed moment. The window may shift substantially between updates, especially during the final phase when a small change in density can produce a large change in energy loss.

For a named spacecraft, use the newest agency forecast and quote the complete interval with its issue time. If the page gives only a date without a window or update timestamp, treat the precision cautiously. A central date is a summary of an uncertain calculation, not proof that entry will occur at that minute.

How do I know if a satellite is falling?

Compare the same orbital element across dated solutions. A consistently declining perigee is the clearest practical signal of natural decay. Apogee may remain high, and the orbit may become more eccentric, so a single “altitude” value can hide the important change. Plotting or tabulating perigee over time helps reveal whether the slope is real.

Also check the time spacing between observations. A small difference over one update may be within the uncertainty of the orbit solution; a repeated decline across several updates is stronger evidence. If a later solution reverses the apparent trend, do not assume the spacecraft gained energy. Revisions to tracking data or atmospheric modeling can change the reported elements.

Why the date is difficult to predict

Upper-atmosphere density changes

Even in low Earth orbit, the atmosphere is extremely thin, but its density varies. Solar activity heats and expands the upper atmosphere, increasing drag at a given altitude. During quieter conditions, drag can be lower. The atmospheric model used by an analyst also changes the estimated density.

Spacecraft orientation and exposed area

Drag depends on how the spacecraft presents itself to the flow. A stable, compact attitude and a broad, tumbling profile do not experience the same resistance. ESA’s information on the ERS-2 reentry explains that tracking altitude alone does not reveal all of these variables.

Aerodynamic and structural properties

Mass, shape, cross-sectional area and aerodynamic behavior affect how quickly orbital energy is lost. The same altitude trend can therefore produce different decay rates for two spacecraft. Construction also influences how an object behaves once it encounters denser air.

Tracking and orbit-prediction limits

Every orbit solution has measurement and modeling uncertainty. More observations generally improve the estimate, but they do not eliminate uncertainty. As the object descends and the atmosphere becomes more influential, the forecast can change rapidly. This is why an agency may update the predicted time repeatedly during the final phase.

What altitude means—and what it does not

Altitude is useful only in context. ESA’s rough 120 km interface estimate and NASA’s approximately 84–72 km breakup range refer to different stages and analytical conventions. Neither number is a universal threshold that can be applied to every spacecraft, orbit or sensor reading.

  • A reading above 120 km does not prove that reentry is impossible; a decaying orbit can cross that level later.
  • A reading near 120 km does not by itself prove that the spacecraft has completed reentry; it may refer to an interface used in a model.
  • A reading in the 84–72 km range is associated with typical breakup guidance, not a guarantee that every vehicle breaks up at the same altitude.
  • An altitude reading does not identify a ground-impact location. That requires a trajectory, breakup and survivability analysis.

Reentry does not always mean complete destruction

ESA says reentering objects usually burn up, but large, compact or dense components and parts made from high-melting-point materials can survive to the ground. The outcome depends on the object’s construction and the breakup process.

NASA’s ORSAT description explains that survivability models estimate which components may reach the ground and help assess associated risk. This is specialist engineering analysis. It cannot be inferred from a single altitude, a photograph or the fact that a spacecraft has entered the atmosphere.

For a specific object, a credible risk statement should identify the modeled object, the predicted trajectory, the uncertainty in the breakup process and the possible footprint. If those details are absent, treat claims about an exact impact point or total burn-up as unsupported.

How common are natural reentries?

ESA reports that about 75% of all larger objects ever launched have reentered. It also states that objects 1 m or larger reenter about once a week and that two small tracked debris objects reenter per day on average. These are agency-level statistics, not a prediction for any named spacecraft. They show why reentry is a routine part of the space environment while leaving the timing of an individual object uncertain.

What tools can a reader use?

Public orbit histories and agency reentry pages are the useful starting points because they combine tracking observations with an identified object. Consumer telescopes, binoculars and generic satellite-tracking displays may help locate or visualize an object, but they do not establish its reentry trajectory or survival risk. The necessary calculations account for changing atmospheric density, attitude, aerodynamic area and breakup behavior.

NASA’s ORSAT is an example of specialist software used to model survivability and ground risk. It is not a consumer test that turns one altitude reading into a prediction. No particular physical product is required to decide whether an identified spacecraft is decaying; the critical requirements are a reliable object identifier, dated tracking data and a current forecast from an authoritative source.

What you can and cannot conclude from available information

Information available Reasonable conclusion Conclusion you should not draw
Several orbit updates with declining perigee The object is undergoing orbital decay and moving toward reentry. An exact reentry time without a current forecast.
One low-altitude reading The object may be lower than a previous estimate. That reentry has definitely occurred.
Agency forecast with a timestamp and window The agency’s current estimate for the stated milestone. A guaranteed time or exact impact point.
Breakup altitude estimate A modeled range in which structural breakup commonly occurs. That every component will burn up.
General statistics about reentries Reentry is common across the tracked population. The fate or schedule of an unidentified spacecraft.

A practical checklist

  • Have you confirmed the official object name and catalog identifier?
  • Do you have more than one dated orbit or altitude observation?
  • Is perigee falling consistently rather than appearing low in one isolated solution?
  • What is the forecast’s issue or update time?
  • What is the complete uncertainty window?
  • Does the forecast refer to atmospheric interface, breakup or a possible fragment footprint?
  • Are solar activity, atmospheric-density assumptions and spacecraft orientation acknowledged as sources of uncertainty?
  • Are claims about surviving fragments supported by a survivability model rather than altitude alone?

When no object-specific answer is possible

No spacecraft name or catalog identifier is supplied in a general question, so its current orbit, probability of reentry, forecast date and ground-impact risk cannot be determined. The correct next step is to identify the object and consult the latest official reentry forecast, verifying its timestamp and uncertainty window.

The most defensible answer for an identified spacecraft combines two pieces of evidence: a sustained, especially perigee-centered, orbit decline and a current agency forecast that states what phase it predicts. Anything more precise requires the object’s live tracking record and, for fragment risk, specialist breakup and survivability analysis.

Frequently Asked Questions

What altitude does reentry start at?

There is no universal threshold. ESA uses a rough atmospheric-interface estimate near 120 km for a spacecraft in a circular orbit, while NASA discusses typical breakup around 84–72 km. These are different milestones, so neither altitude alone proves that a particular spacecraft has reentered.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How can I tell if a satellite is falling?

Check several dated orbit solutions and look for a sustained decline in perigee, the orbit’s lowest point. One low altitude can reflect tracking or modeling uncertainty; a repeated downward trend is stronger evidence of drag-driven decay.

When will a spacecraft reenter?

Use the latest object-specific agency forecast and read its full uncertainty window and update time. The date can shift as new tracking observations, solar activity and atmospheric-density estimates change.

Does reentry mean the spacecraft will completely burn up?

Usually much of a reentering object burns up, but large, dense or high-melting-point components can survive. Determining the surviving pieces and possible ground footprint requires specialist breakup and survivability modeling.

Can a consumer telescope or tracker predict reentry?

No. Such equipment may help observe or identify an object, but it does not establish a reentry trajectory or ground risk. Use dated tracking records and an authoritative forecast; specialist tools such as NASA’s ORSAT are used for survivability analysis.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why do reentry forecasts keep changing?

Upper-atmosphere density varies with solar activity, and drag also depends on orientation, exposed area, mass and shape. New tracking data and revised orbit models therefore move the predicted time and sometimes widen or narrow its uncertainty window.

The Bottom Line

The strongest practical evidence is a sustained fall in perigee combined with a current, object-specific forecast from an authoritative agency. Check the forecast’s timestamp, uncertainty window and stated milestone, and do not confuse atmospheric interface, breakup or possible ground impact. Without an identified spacecraft and current tracking data, an exact reentry time or fragment risk cannot be determined.
