There is no single home test that proves a rare Pokémon card is genuine. Compare several features with a known authentic copy of the same card, language, and version; treat light, print, foil, and seller clues as screening checks. If the card is valuable or the clues do not agree, have a specialist examine it.
Start by identifying the exact card
Before comparing details, record the Pokémon, set, card number, language, rarity, and finish. Then find a reliable image or physical example of that same version. Small differences can reflect language or print variants rather than a counterfeit. PSA’s card-research guidance recommends identifying details such as year, manufacturer, set, character, and card number to research an item; that information helps you find a fair comparison, but does not authenticate the card by itself. Inspect several features together
Compare the suspect card with a known genuine copy of the same card and language whenever possible. A mismatch is a reason to investigate, not automatic proof: the specific card, version, and print matter.

TCGplayer’s guide discusses card backs, print, fonts, texture, and packaging clues. PSA’s 2025 fraud report describes more advanced checks, including ink-density comparison, microscopic pattern alignment, edge analysis, surface fluorescence, print-registration alignment, and tactile analysis. These methods help explain why a simple visual rule cannot reliably authenticate every card. A loupe may help you see detail, but it does not reproduce professional authentication. Use the bright-light check as a clue, not a verdict
Pokémon Support recommends holding a suspicious card up to a bright light, noting that counterfeit cards are often easy to see through. The page does not say that every genuine card blocks light or every counterfeit lets it through, so this check cannot settle the question on its own. Consider how the card was sold
Pokémon Support warns that booster packs offered dramatically below suggested retail prices are a near-certain counterfeit warning and says it receives the highest reported instances of counterfeit sales from flea markets. Those observations concern counterfeit merchandise and reported sales; they are not a general statistic about every card, seller, or marketplace. The same support page notes that fake booster packs can be difficult to discern. Treat a suspicious price or sales context as a reason for closer inspection, not as a conclusion about an individual card.

If the card is graded, check the item as well as the number
- Enter the certification number in PSA’s Cert Verification.
- Compare the record’s identifying details and images, where available, with the actual card, label, and holder.
- Look for inconsistencies between the physical item and the database record; do not treat a matching number as proof.
PSA warns that counterfeit inserts may reuse certification numbers found in public sources. Its database lookup alone does not establish that the physical holder and card match the record, or guarantee that an item pictured online is genuinely PSA-authenticated.
When to seek an expert
Pokémon Support recommends asking a local shop that specializes in trading cards to evaluate a suspicious card. If a rare card could carry substantial value and your checks remain uncertain—or if the clues conflict—seek an experienced specialist or professional authentication and grading service. Confirm its current submission process, fees, and guarantee terms directly before sending the card.

PSA’s standards describe “Questionable Authenticity” as applying when a card appears counterfeit. Its grading standards also exclude cards showing evidence of trimming, recoloring, restoration, or questionable authenticity from normal grading.
