The fastest way to tell is to read the exact product name and verify the model number. A listing labeled PS5 Digital Edition is sold without a disc drive. A standard PS5 console or disc edition should specify Blu-ray playback and show the drive in the contents or product photos. A PS5 Pro is drive-optional: Sony documents disc playback when a compatible drive is installed, but the drive may be sold separately.
Before paying, confirm three things: the drive is physically included in the box, the CFI model is compatible with the intended setup, and the total cost still makes sense if a separate CFI-ZDD1 drive is required.
The three-minute answer
Use this order of checks when a retailer, marketplace seller or private seller does not make the configuration obvious:
Recommended Free Tools
- Read the full name. “PS5 Digital Edition” means no drive. “PS5 Pro” does not, by itself, prove that a drive is included.
- Read the specifications and box contents. Look for “disc drive,” “Blu-ray,” or a separate drive listed as an included component. A generic “PS5” headline is not enough.
- Inspect the CFI model number. Find it in the product photos, specifications or box label. Sony identifies CFI-2000 and CFI-7000 model groups for the detachable-drive setup; Sony’s accessory listing names CFI-2000/2100 Digital Edition and CFI-7000 Pro compatibility.
- Check the final bundle total. If the listing is digital-only or a Pro bundle without a drive, add the cost of a compatible CFI-ZDD1 drive before comparing it with a disc-equipped console.
Sony describes the standard PS5 console as able to “Play PS5 and PS4 games on Blu-ray discs.” Its comparison description for the Digital Edition calls it “An all-digital version of the PS5 console with no disc drive.” Those descriptions are more reliable than a shortened retailer title.

What each PS5 name normally means
Standard PS5 console or disc edition
A standard PS5 listing is the configuration intended to play physical PS5 and PS4 game discs. Sony’s product comparison identifies Blu-ray playback for this version. A trustworthy listing should reinforce that with wording such as “Blu-ray,” “disc drive included,” or a box-contents entry naming the drive.
Do not rely on a product photograph alone if the drive is difficult to see. Some images show a console beside accessories without stating what is in the retail box. Use the written specifications and contents section as the deciding evidence.
PS5 Digital Edition
The phrase Digital Edition is the strongest exclusion clue. It means the console is sold without a disc drive and is intended for games and other content obtained digitally. If a listing says “PS5 Digital Edition,” assume there is no drive unless the seller is explicitly describing a bundle that adds one separately.
Words such as “digital,” “all-digital,” or “download edition” should trigger the same check. A seller may use an abbreviated title such as “PS5 Digital,” while the detailed model name or specifications provide the decisive wording.
PS5 Pro
“PS5 Pro” identifies the console family, not a guaranteed drive bundle. Sony states that disc playback is available when a drive is installed and lists the compatible drive separately. A Pro listing therefore needs an explicit contents statement or a photograph that clearly shows the drive as part of the package.

If the listing only says “PS5 Pro console,” do not assume a drive is included. Ask the seller to confirm in writing whether the physical drive is in the box and identify its model if it is not Sony’s standard included hardware.
How to inspect a retailer or marketplace listing
1. Expand the complete product title
Retail sites often shorten titles in search results. Open the full product page and look for the exact configuration. “PS5 Digital Edition” is a no-drive configuration. “PS5 console” or “disc edition” should be supported by Blu-ray wording, not merely by a generic console photograph.

2. Read the specifications and contents
Search the page for these terms:
- Disc drive or Blu-ray drive: evidence that a physical drive is part of the package.
- Blu-ray playback: evidence associated with a disc-equipped standard PS5.
- Box contents: the clearest place to see whether the drive is physically supplied.
- Digital Edition: evidence that the console itself is sold without a drive.
A drive pictured in a lifestyle image but omitted from the contents list is an ambiguity, not proof. Treat the written contents list as controlling and contact the seller if the two conflict.
3. Locate the CFI model number
Look in the listing’s close-up photographs, technical specifications and packaging images. Sony tells users to check the model number when setting up a console, so a clear CFI identifier is more useful than a seller’s informal label.
Model numbers are commonly shown on the console or its box. If the number is blurred, cropped or absent, request a clear photograph before buying. Do not infer the CFI number from the console’s color or from an old stock image.

4. Confirm what is physically included
For a used or marketplace listing, ask for a current photograph of the exact box and all components. The question should be specific: “Is the disc drive physically included in this price, and is it listed in the box contents?” A reply such as “It supports discs” may describe a compatible console rather than the bundle being sold.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches5. Add the accessory cost before deciding
If the listing is a Digital Edition or a Pro without a drive, compare the console price plus a compatible CFI-ZDD1 drive against a standard disc-equipped PS5 bundle. This prevents a seemingly cheaper digital listing from becoming more expensive after the accessory is added.
Using the CFI model number correctly
CFI identifiers are configuration clues, not sales statistics. The official material identifies model groups associated with detachable-drive setups and names the compatible accessory models. They do not tell you how frequently a retailer omits a drive, nor do they replace a contents check.
| CFI information in the listing | What it helps establish | What you still must verify |
|---|---|---|
| CFI-2000 group | Associated with the detachable-drive setup identified by Sony support. | Whether the drive is included in this particular box or must be purchased separately. |
| CFI-2100 Digital Edition | Named in Sony’s accessory listing as compatible with the CFI-ZDD1 drive. | That the listing is actually a Digital Edition and whether the seller includes a drive. |
| CFI-7000 Pro | Named in Sony’s accessory listing as compatible with the CFI-ZDD1 drive. | Whether the Pro package includes the accessory; “Pro” alone does not guarantee it. |
A model group can establish compatibility with a detachable drive, but it cannot establish that the accessory is in the seller’s box. Keep those questions separate: Can this console use a drive? and Is the drive included?
PS5 Pro: the configuration that causes the most confusion
PS5 Pro listings deserve an extra check because the console and the drive are treated as separate products in Sony’s documentation. Sony says disc playback is available when a drive is installed and sells the compatible drive separately. As a result, two listings with nearly identical “PS5 Pro” titles can have different contents.

Evidence that a Pro drive is included
- The contents section explicitly names a disc drive.
- The bundle description states that the drive is included, not merely supported.
- A photograph of the exact sealed box or bundle shows the drive as a component.
- The seller confirms the inclusion in writing and identifies the drive model.
Evidence that a Pro drive is not included
- The title says “PS5 Pro Digital Edition” or otherwise describes an all-digital package.
- The contents list names only the console, controller, cables and documentation.
- The seller says the console is “disc-ready,” “drive compatible” or “supports an optional drive.” Those phrases describe capability, not inclusion.
When none of these statements is clear, treat the Pro listing as drive-optional and calculate the price with a separate CFI-ZDD1 drive.
Adding a disc drive later
Sony’s official add-on is the Disc Drive model CFI-ZDD1. Sony lists it as playing 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray and DVD discs. The accessory listing also states: “Internet connection required to pair Disc Drive and PS5 console upon setup.”
Compatibility check
Before ordering, compare the console’s CFI model with the accessory listing. Sony identifies CFI-2000/2100 Digital Edition and CFI-7000 Pro compatibility for CFI-ZDD1. If the listing does not show a CFI number, obtain it before purchasing the accessory.
Setup requirements
- Confirm that the console model is one of the CFI groups named as compatible with CFI-ZDD1.
- Install the drive according to the console and accessory instructions.
- Connect the console to the internet during initial setup so the drive can pair with the console.
- Test a supported 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray or DVD disc after pairing.
The internet requirement applies to pairing during setup. It is a concrete installation requirement, so a buyer planning to set up the console in an offline location should arrange temporary internet access before attempting the first pairing.

| Comparison field | Questions to answer | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Drive status | Is a physical drive built in or included in the box, or is the console digital-only? | Determines whether discs can be used immediately and whether an accessory purchase is required. |
| Exact CFI model | Which CFI-2000, CFI-2100 or CFI-7000 identifier is shown? | Helps verify detachable-drive compatibility and distinguish configurations. |
| Box contents | Does the contents list name the drive, console, controller, cables and documentation? | Separates included hardware from features the console merely supports. |
| Storage capacity | What capacity is stated for each listing? | Two listings can have different storage even when both are described as PS5 consoles. |
| Regional bundle | Does the offer include a region-specific game, promotion or package contents? | Bundle items can change the practical value and may not be present in another market. |
| Total cost | What is the price after adding a CFI-ZDD1 drive, if needed? | Reveals the real cost of turning a digital-only or drive-less Pro setup into a disc-capable system. |
No official market-wide statistic establishes how often listings omit drives. The useful published figures here are identifiers—CFI-2000, CFI-2100, CFI-7000 and CFI-ZDD1—not prevalence rates. Avoid claims such as “most Pro bundles exclude the drive” unless a seller’s specific contents list proves it.
Common listing traps and how to resolve them
“PS5” with no edition stated
A generic title is incomplete evidence. Open the specifications and contents, then find the CFI number. If the seller cannot show whether a drive is included, do not treat the listing as a disc edition.
“Disc-ready” or “disc compatible”
These phrases usually describe future capability. They do not answer whether the drive is in the current package. Require an explicit “drive included” statement or a box-contents entry.

Drive visible in a stock image
Retailers may reuse images across several configurations. A stock image can show a drive that is not part of the selected SKU. Match the selected variant, written contents and CFI model; ask for an exact-package photograph for used goods.
Seller uses “digital” to describe downloads
“Digital game bundle” does not necessarily mean “Digital Edition console.” Distinguish a console labeled Digital Edition from a disc-capable console that happens to include downloadable games. The console’s edition name and contents list decide the drive question.
Model number is missing or inconsistent
Do not guess. Request a photo of the box label or console identifier. If the title says Pro but the specification shows a different family, pause the purchase until the seller explains the discrepancy.

How to verify the configuration after delivery
- Compare the model number on the delivered box or console with the number shown in the listing.
- Open the package and match every component against the stated contents.
- Check that the physical drive is present if the listing promised one.
- For a detachable-drive setup, complete the required internet pairing during setup.
- Test a supported disc before the return window closes.
If the delivered package is digital-only despite a promised drive, photograph the box contents and contact the seller promptly. If the CFI number differs from the advertised configuration, document that discrepancy as well; compatibility and included hardware are separate issues.
Quick Recap
Bottom line for each listing type
