There is no single visual trick that proves a loose Pokémon promo card is genuine. The reliable first-pass approach is to identify the exact promotion, compare the card with that release’s official imagery, use a bright-light check as a screening step, and then obtain an in-person evaluation when anything remains inconsistent. A PSA certification lookup can add evidence for a graded card, but a matching number does not prove that the physical holder or card is authentic.
What an authenticity check can—and cannot—prove
Authentication is different from identifying a card. Identification answers “Which card and release is this?” Authentication asks “Was this particular object legitimately printed and presented?” You need the first answer before the second one is possible.
Pokémon Support’s counterfeit guidance recommends becoming familiar with official product images, checking a questionable card under bright light, and asking a trading-card specialty shop to evaluate it. Those steps are useful because they combine a release-specific reference, a physical observation and an experienced second opinion. None is presented as an infallible home test.

| Seller or purchase context | Whether the transaction has warning signs that justify extra scrutiny | A card-level verdict |
Treat the result as a confidence assessment. If several independent details disagree with the claimed release, stop treating the card as genuine until a specialist examines it. If the details agree but the card is valuable, professional review is still the sensible final step.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Step 1: Establish exactly which promo the card claims to be
Write down the information on the card and from the listing or packaging before judging its quality. Record:
- Pokémon name and card name
- Language
- Promo identifier or collector number
- The event, product, campaign or box from which the card supposedly came
- Any claimed release date or region
Use those details to find an official image for that specific promotion. Do not compare a card casually with a similar-looking promo from another product, language or era. Promotions can reuse characters and artwork themes while changing the printed wording, numbering, logo treatment or finish.
Use the promo mark as an identification clue
An independent identification reference describes Pokémon promos as using a black star with the word “PROMO” in place of a normal set symbol. It also emphasizes reading the set, collector number and printing together. This is a useful way to recognize a claimed promo, not a universal authenticity rule. Languages, release periods and special products can differ, so a mark that looks unfamiliar is a reason to check the exact release—not an automatic counterfeit verdict.

Save or print the official product image and, where available, images of the front and back from a reputable card reference. Keep the reference for the same language and release. A generic checklist cannot tell you whether a particular anniversary, event or boxed-product promo has a different foil pattern or logo placement.
Step 2: Perform the bright-light screening check
Pokémon Support gives this specific guidance:
“Counterfeit cards are often easy to see through if you hold them up to a bright light, so this is a good way to identify a fake.”

Use a bright, steady light and observe the card without bending, creasing or pressing it. An inexpensive LED flashlight can make the observation easier, but it is only an illumination aid; it does not authenticate a card.
- Move to a clean, dry area with enough room to hold the card by its edges.
- Turn on a bright LED flashlight or use another bright light source.
- Hold the card between your fingers and look for unusually easy visibility through the stock.
- Repeat the observation from more than one angle, then compare it with a known genuine card of similar construction if you have one.
- Record the result and continue with the other checks rather than treating the light test as a pass/fail certification.
Pokémon Support does not provide a universal thickness, translucency threshold or exception list for every language, era and promo. Lighting, card construction and the comparison card can affect what you see. A card that looks too transparent deserves further scrutiny; a card that does not is not thereby proven genuine.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsNever rip, burn, bend sharply, wet or otherwise damage a collectible to test it. Destructive demonstrations can reduce the value of a genuine card and still do not provide a responsible authentication method.
Step 3: Compare the card with the exact official reference
Work through several features together. A single oddity can result from a photograph, lighting or a different printing; a cluster of mismatches is much more significant.
| Feature | How to compare it | Warning signs |
|---|---|---|
| Artwork and layout | Match the Pokémon’s position, background elements, attack area, borders and spacing with the same promo image. | Objects shifted, missing or added; borders that are visibly the wrong width; artwork from another release. |
| Typography | Read names, attacks, rules text, weakness, resistance and numbers at the same scale as the reference. | Spelling errors, different letter shapes, uneven baselines, incorrect punctuation or a noticeably different font. |
| Symbols and logos | Check the promo treatment, energy symbols, rarity or event marks and their placement. | A symbol copied from a regular set, a logo in the wrong location or a mark that does not belong to the claimed release. |
| Collector numbering | Compare the number, slash format and any “PROMO” wording with the release reference. | Number omitted, duplicated in an impossible format or inconsistent with the stated promotion. |
| Finish and printing | View the surface under consistent light and compare the pattern, gloss and foil areas with the official image. | Foil in areas that should be matte, a pattern that does not align, muddy color or print registration that visibly drifts. |
| Edges and surface | Inspect without scratching the card, preferably under magnification available at a shop. | Layers, cuts, texture or surface wear that do not make sense for the claimed printing. |
The available guidance does not establish one universal back design, finish, thickness or edge test that applies to every promo language and era. Do not reject a card solely because it differs from a different promo or a card printed years later.

Why several small mismatches matter
Counterfeiters can copy a photograph while missing production details. Look for consistency across the entire card: the text must belong to the claimed language, the symbols must match the promotion, the number must fit the release and the finish must agree with the product image. A card that fails in multiple independent areas should be set aside for specialist review.
What advanced examination involves
A 2025 PSA Fraud Report search-result excerpt lists advanced authentication approaches including ink-density comparison, microscopic-pattern alignment, edge analysis, surface fluorescence, print-registration alignment and tactile surface analysis. The excerpt is not a complete PSA procedure, and it should not be treated as a home-testing manual. These methods illustrate why a specialist with suitable equipment can resolve cases that a photograph, flashlight or internet checklist cannot.
Step 4: Check the purchase context without overreaching
Context helps you decide how urgently to escalate, but it is not proof about the card itself.
Pokémon Support says dramatically underpriced packs are a near-certain warning of counterfeit merchandise and reports the highest instances of counterfeit sales from flea markets. Those statements concern packs and reported sales context. They do not mean every inexpensive single card is fake or that every flea-market purchase is counterfeit.
- Preserve the listing, photographs, messages, receipt and packaging.
- Note whether the seller allowed inspection, provided a return policy and identified the exact promotion.
- Be cautious when a seller uses stock photographs, refuses close-ups or pressures you to decide immediately.
- Do not let a seller’s assurance replace card-level comparison and, for a valuable card, professional evaluation.
A low price is a reason to perform the workflow carefully, not a standalone verdict.

Step 5: If the card is in a PSA holder, verify both the record and the object
For a graded card, enter the certification number in PSA’s certification lookup and compare the returned information with the label: card name, grade, set or issue details and any other fields shown. This is a useful, free consistency check.
PSA warns that counterfeiters can copy legitimate certification numbers obtained from public sources. Its database does not inspect items listed online and does not guarantee that a particular physical item is genuine merely because its number appears in the database. A valid number can therefore be attached to a counterfeit insert, a different card or a tampered holder.
- Read the certification number directly from the holder, not only from the seller’s listing.
- Look up the number and compare every available database detail with the label.
- Compare the actual card inside the holder with the database description and the claimed release.
- Inspect the label, holder and seals for physical inconsistencies, alterations or signs that the object does not correspond to the record.
- Evaluate the seller and transaction terms; PSA recommends using trustworthy sellers.
Do not remove a card from a holder to resolve an ordinary doubt. If the number matches but the physical object still looks wrong, treat the mismatch as unresolved and seek qualified hands-on help.
Loose card or graded slab: choose the right verification route
| Situation | Best first checks | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Loose promo card | Identify the exact release, compare official imagery, perform the bright-light screen and inspect multiple printed details. | No database number or holder record exists; a home inspection cannot guarantee authenticity. |
| PSA-graded card | Perform all relevant visual checks, then use the certification lookup and compare the actual card, label and holder. | Public certification numbers can be copied, and the database does not authenticate a physical online item. |
| High-value or disputed card | Preserve transaction evidence and obtain an in-person evaluation from a trading-card specialist. | Seller assurances, a bright-light result or a matching number alone should not settle the dispute. |
Step 6: Escalate to a specialist when the stakes justify it
Pokémon Support recommends asking a local shop specializing in trading cards to evaluate a potentially counterfeit card. This is the clearest escalation route in its official guidance because a specialist can handle the card, compare it with reference material and use magnification or other equipment without requiring you to damage the collectible.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Escalate immediately when:
- The card is expensive, rare or being sold as a major event promo.
- The bright-light result is unusual.
- Several text, symbol, numbering or finish details conflict with the exact reference.
- A PSA number matches the database but the holder or card does not look consistent.
- The seller refuses a return while authenticity remains uncertain.
- You are considering grading, selling or trading the card and cannot document its identity confidently.
Take the card, its packaging and your saved reference images to the appointment. Keep the card in a protective sleeve and rigid holder, handle it by the edges and avoid cleaning or altering the surface before evaluation. Ask the shop to explain which observations support its opinion and whether a formal authentication or grading service is warranted.

Common mistakes that produce false confidence
Relying on one “magic” tell
Thickness, a back test, a light test or a promo symbol can be useful evidence, but none is established here as a universal pass/fail rule. Use multiple release-specific observations.
Comparing with the wrong promo
A similar Pokémon, event or product can have different text, numbering and foil treatment. Confirm the language and claimed source before declaring a mismatch.
Assuming a card is genuine because it is in a slab
A holder can be altered, and a copied certification number can point to a real database record. Check the physical object as well as the number.
Assuming a cheap card is automatically counterfeit
Price is a contextual warning, not a card-level test. The specific official warning concerns dramatically underpriced packs.
Damaging the card to prove a point
Ripping, burning or bending destroys evidence and value. Use non-destructive observation and professional help instead.
A printable Pokémon promo authenticity checklist
- Record the Pokémon, card name, language, promo identifier, collector number and claimed promotion.
- Find an official image for that exact release and retain it for comparison.
- Check whether the promo mark and numbering fit the claimed release; treat differences as identification questions, not instant verdicts.
- Compare artwork, layout, typography, spelling, symbols, numbering and finish.
- Hold the card to a bright light without bending it and note unusual transparency.
- Preserve the listing, receipt, messages, packaging and seller details.
- If graded, look up the certification number and compare the database record with the actual label, holder and card.
- Do not rely on a matching number, a low price or one visual feature alone.
- Ask a local trading-card specialty shop to examine the card when evidence conflicts or the value is significant.
What a sensible conclusion looks like
After the checks, describe your result precisely: “The card matches the official reference and showed no obvious warning signs, but it has not been professionally authenticated,” or “The card has multiple inconsistencies and is being held for specialist evaluation.” That wording preserves the difference between no obvious problem and proof of authenticity.
For a valuable Pokémon promo, the safest decision is to stop relying on seller claims or a single home test and obtain an experienced, hands-on opinion before selling, trading or paying a premium.
