Tap the Pokémon to enter the encounter, then look directly above its CP. If the shiny icon appears there, the encountered Pokémon is shiny. Color is only a supporting clue: regional forms can look dramatically different without being shiny, and some regional forms also have shiny versions.
The official way to identify a shiny Pokémon
Niantic’s Pokémon GO Help Center identifies one decisive test: the shiny icon displayed above the Pokémon’s CP during an encounter. When that icon is present, the Pokémon you are viewing is a Shiny Pokémon. This encounter-screen indicator is more dependable than judging the model’s colors or shape.
The check happens after you tap a Pokémon and the encounter screen loads. You do not need to infer shiny status from the map view, the species name, or a comparison with a picture found elsewhere. Inspect the area above CP on the encounter screen and use the icon as the confirmation signal.
Step-by-step: check a Pokémon before you catch it
- Tap the Pokémon. Open the normal encounter screen for the Pokémon you want to inspect.
- Locate its CP. The CP value is shown near the top of the encounter interface.
- Look immediately above CP. Check for the game’s shiny icon in that area.
- Make the decision from the icon. An icon means this encounter is shiny. If the Pokémon merely looks unusual but the icon is not present, do not label it shiny from color alone.
- Continue with the encounter. After confirming the status, catch the Pokémon or leave the encounter according to your usual play.
This process is the same whether the Pokémon’s colors are obviously different or so similar to the standard form that you cannot spot a visual change. The icon is the in-game confirmation Niantic describes.

Why color alone is not a reliable test
A Pokémon can look different for reasons unrelated to shininess. Pokémon GO includes regional forms, and a regional form can change a species’ colors, body shape, or posture while remaining a regular, non-shiny encounter.
Niantic uses Rattata to illustrate the problem. Kanto Rattata is purple and four-legged, while Alolan Rattata is black and upright. Those differences identify regional forms; they do not, by themselves, prove that either encounter is shiny. Regional forms can also have their own shiny variants, so even recognizing the correct region does not replace checking the icon.

Comparing a Pokémon with a screenshot, a remembered color chart, or another player’s example can help you recognize forms, but those comparisons are not the final test in the encounter. The icon is.

Not every Pokémon has an available shiny variant
Niantic states that not all Pokémon in Pokémon GO have shiny variants available. Therefore, the absence of a shiny encounter for a species is not automatically a display problem or a missed visual effect. The species may simply not have an available shiny form at that time.
Availability can also be restricted to particular events. Niantic specifically notes Smeargle, Unown, and Meltan as species whose shiny encounters have been limited to specific events according to its Help Center guidance. A species that was shiny-capable during an event may not be generally available afterward, and availability can change when new events are announced.
How to check whether a species is currently eligible
- Identify the exact species and form. Regional forms and special forms can have different availability, so do not assume that one form’s status applies to every form.
- Read current official Pokémon GO event announcements. Use Niantic’s announcements to determine whether a shiny release or event-limited encounter is active now.
- Check the encounter itself. If you meet the species during an active event, inspect above CP for the icon rather than deciding from its colors.
- Record the result in context. Note the event or period in which you encountered it, because event-limited availability is not a permanent promise that every future encounter will be shiny-capable.
There is no single permanent roster to apply blindly: shiny availability is a live game feature and can vary by species, form, and event.

Ditto: why a disguise can confuse shiny checks
Ditto has a special disguise rule. A shiny Ditto does not disguise itself as another shiny Pokémon, but it can disguise itself as a non-shiny Pokémon. That means the Pokémon you see before the encounter resolves is not a safe basis for deciding whether the eventual Ditto is shiny.

The relevant question is the status of the Pokémon in the actual encounter. Apply the same icon check above CP when the encounter is displayed. The apparent species’ color does not override Ditto’s disguise behavior.
Use the Shiny Pokédex to verify registration
Encounter identification and Pokédex registration answer different questions. The encounter icon tells you whether the Pokémon in front of you is shiny. The Shiny category in the Pokédex tells you whether that shiny form has been registered to your account.

A standard catch does not register the species as caught in the Shiny Pokédex. If you have only caught the ordinary form, the shiny entry can still appear as an outline until you obtain the shiny form.
Check your registration
- Open the in-game Pokédex.
- Switch to the Shiny category or Shiny view.
- Find the species and inspect its entry.
- Treat an outline as evidence that the shiny form has not yet been obtained, even if the ordinary species is already registered elsewhere in your Pokédex.
This view is useful after an encounter when you are unsure whether you already own that shiny form. It should not be used as a substitute for the encounter icon: an outline describes your collection record, while the icon describes the current encounter.

Troubleshooting mistaken shiny calls
It is a different color, but there is no icon
Start with the regional-form explanation. The Kanto and Alolan Rattata example shows how large a normal form difference can be. Reopen or recheck the encounter interface and inspect above CP. Do not let a color comparison overrule the icon test.

The shiny change is hard to see
Some encounters may not provide an obvious color contrast to your eyes. That is exactly when the interface indicator matters most. Zooming in on a screenshot or comparing artwork can introduce uncertainty; the icon remains the decisive in-game signal.
The species appears in the Shiny Pokédex only as an outline
An outline means the shiny form is not registered. Having the ordinary species recorded does not fill the shiny entry. Check whether the Pokémon you are currently viewing actually shows the encounter icon, then use the Shiny Pokédex to confirm your collection status after obtaining it.
You expected a shiny, but the species is not producing one
First verify the species and form, then consult current official event announcements. Not every species has an available shiny variant, and some shiny encounters are event-limited. Avoid treating an old event report as proof of current availability.

Do not infer Ditto’s shiny status from the disguise. Niantic’s rule allows a shiny Ditto to appear as a non-shiny Pokémon, while it will not disguise itself as another shiny Pokémon. Use the encounter’s shiny icon once the game presents the actual result.
What the icon test does—and does not—tell you
- It does tell you: whether the Pokémon currently shown in the encounter is shiny, according to Niantic’s stated interface guidance.
- It does not tell you: whether every member of that species can be shiny, whether a regional color difference is a shiny change, or whether you have already registered the shiny form.
- For availability: consult current official Pokémon GO event announcements because releases and event restrictions can change.
- For collection status: use the Shiny Pokédex, where a standard catch does not substitute for a shiny registration.
The practical rule is simple: enter the encounter, look above CP for the shiny icon, and treat color as context rather than proof. Regional forms, event-limited species, Ditto disguises, and separate Pokédex registration all create situations in which appearance alone can mislead you.
