Match the platform marking first: M18 batteries go with M18 tools and chargers, M12 batteries go with M12 tools and chargers, and MX FUEL batteries go with MX FUEL equipment and chargers. Then verify the charger model, because not every Milwaukee charger supports both M18 and M12.
For a dependable answer about one particular setup, read the model numbers on the tool, battery and charger and check the manuals for those exact products. The platform label establishes the normal system match; the individual documentation resolves exceptions, specialized equipment and questions about a battery’s condition or authenticity.
The compatibility rule to use first
Milwaukee organizes its cordless equipment into separate battery platforms. Its compatibility FAQ states:

- All M18 batteries are compatible with M18 tools and chargers.
- All M12 batteries are compatible with M12 tools and chargers.
- All MX FUEL batteries are compatible with MX FUEL equipment and chargers.
That means the name “Milwaukee” is not sufficient by itself. Treat M18, M12 and MX FUEL as different systems unless the documentation for a specific product explicitly says otherwise. An M18 battery should not be assumed to operate an M12 tool, and an M12 battery should not be assumed to operate an M18 tool. MX FUEL equipment belongs to its own platform as well.

The platform marking is the fastest reliable check because it answers the central question before you compare capacity, size or charging speed. If the markings do not match, stop and consult the exact product manual rather than forcing a connection.
How to check a battery, tool and charger step by step
1. Read the platform marking on the battery
Look for the system name printed on the battery housing or its product label. Record whether it says M18, M12 or MX FUEL. Do not use the pack’s CP, XC or HD designation as the platform name; those are M18 pack-format descriptions, discussed below.
2. Read the marking on the tool or equipment
Check the label on the tool itself, its packaging or its manual. The equipment should identify the platform it is designed for. An M18 marking establishes the normal M18 match; an M12 marking establishes the normal M12 match; MX FUEL equipment requires an MX FUEL pack.

Read the model number on the charger and its label showing supported battery systems. Do not infer compatibility merely because the charger is made by Milwaukee. The manufacturer’s guidance specifically distinguishes ordinary M18 chargers from chargers designed for more than one platform.
4. Confirm the three-way match
Write the results down in this order: tool platform, battery platform and charger platform. A normal setup has the same platform on the tool and battery, while the charger must list that battery platform among its supported systems. A charger that supports M18 does not automatically support M12.
5. Check the exact manual when anything is unclear
Use the model numbers, not just the product family name, when consulting documentation. This is especially important for specialized equipment, older products, vehicle chargers and any pack whose label is damaged or difficult to read. A general platform FAQ cannot verify whether a particular battery is genuine, damaged or healthy.

Which Milwaukee batteries and chargers are compatible?

The table expresses the platform-level rule, not a substitute for an individual product manual. Milwaukee’s M18 guidance says authentic M18 packs must be charged on Milwaukee M18 chargers. A dual-system charger is an exception because its product documentation expressly lists both platforms.

M18 & M12 Multi-Voltage Charger (48-59-1812)
Milwaukee identifies model 48-59-1812 as an M18 and M12 Multi-Voltage Charger. Its documentation says it accepts all M18 and M12 packs. This is a named dual-system product; it does not mean that every Milwaukee charger has the same capability.
The product page describes sequential charging: when packs are installed together, the charger charges one battery and then the other rather than charging both simultaneously. That page gives approximate figures of 30 minutes for compact packs and 60 minutes for extended-capacity packs. Treat those numbers as the figures for this charger and the conditions stated on its product page, not as a universal time for every M18 or M12 charger.
M18 / M12 Vehicle Charger (48-59-1810)
Model 48-59-1810 is another explicitly dual-system charger. Milwaukee describes it as an M18/M12 vehicle charger designed for a vehicle 12V or 24V DC outlet, and says it accepts all M18 and M12 packs. Verify that the available vehicle outlet matches the charger’s stated input before connecting it.
These two examples show how to handle a charger claim safely: find the exact model, confirm that the manual lists the platform you need, and follow the input and operating instructions. Never generalize a dual-system label to an unmarked or different charger.
Can you use an M18 battery on any Milwaukee tool?
At the platform level, Milwaukee’s answer is yes for M18 tools: “All M18™ batteries are compatible with M18™ tools & chargers.” The statement means an M18 pack is the correct battery family for an M18 tool. It does not turn M18 into a universal battery for every Milwaukee product, because M12 and MX FUEL are separate platforms.

For a real-world pairing, still inspect the tool’s model information and manual. That check can identify product-specific instructions, charger requirements, operating limitations or a warning about a damaged pack. It also protects you from misreading a worn label or assuming that a third-party or altered pack has the same status as an authentic Milwaukee battery.
What CP, XC and HD mean on M18 packs
Once you have established that both the tool and battery are M18, the CP, XC and HD labels help you choose among M18 pack formats. They describe design trade-offs rather than separate compatibility platforms.

These labels do not make an M18 pack compatible with an M12 or MX FUEL product. First match the platform; then use CP, XC or HD to weigh size, power and runtime for the M18 tool and job.
Pack format also affects charging behavior. A compact pack and an extended-capacity pack can require different times on the same charger, so capacity label and charger model should both be recorded when estimating downtime.
Published M18 Super Charger times
Milwaukee reports the following M18 Super Charger results from testing at room temperature. The figures are manufacturer claims accessed in 2026, and actual results can vary with the battery, charger and surrounding conditions.

Do not transfer one row’s result to another pack or charger. The test conditions, pack design and charger electronics all matter. If your charging time is different, compare the exact battery and charger models first, then consider ambient conditions and the battery’s age or condition.

Why a compatible setup may still charge or run differently
Compatibility answers whether the platform connection is correct; it does not promise identical runtime or charging speed in every situation. Milwaukee notes that charging performance varies with the battery, charger and surrounding environment.

- Battery format: CP, XC and HD packs differ in size, power and intended runtime, even within M18.
- Charger model: A standard M18 charger and an M18 Super Charger are different products with different published performance.
- Environment: The Super Charger figures above were measured at room temperature; conditions outside that test setting can change results.
- Battery condition: A general compatibility statement does not establish the health, damage status or authenticity of an individual pack.
- Charging sequence: The M18/M12 Multi-Voltage Charger charges installed packs sequentially, so total elapsed time depends on how many batteries are waiting.
Use the published time only as a model-specific reference. A longer or shorter result by itself does not prove that the battery is incompatible.

You have an M18 tool and an M18 battery
- Confirm the M18 marking on both products.
- Read the charger label and manual to verify M18 support.
- If the charger is a named dual-system model, confirm that its documentation lists M18.
- Inspect the pack and connector for damage and follow the manual’s charging instructions.
This is the standard platform match. CP, XC or HD can then guide your size, power and runtime choice.
You have an M18 battery and an M12 charger
Do not assume the charger works. Check whether the charger is specifically documented as supporting both systems. If it is not, use a Milwaukee M18 charger identified for the pack.
You have an M12 battery and an M18 charger
Apply the same check in reverse. A charger must explicitly list M12 support. The fact that it accepts an M18 pack is not evidence that it accepts M12.

Count the platforms named in the model documentation, not the number of bays. Two bays can still belong to one platform. The M18/M12 Multi-Voltage Charger is a documented example where both platforms are supported, and its charging operation is sequential.

You have MX FUEL equipment
Keep the setup within the MX FUEL system. Milwaukee states that MX FUEL batteries are compatible with MX FUEL equipment and chargers. Do not substitute an M18 or M12 pack based on the Milwaukee name alone.
Troubleshooting a battery or charger that does not work
The battery will not seat in the tool
- Recheck the platform marking on the tool and pack.
- Compare both model numbers with the manuals.
- Do not file, bend or modify the connector to force a fit.
- If the labels are unreadable, stop and obtain the exact product documentation before trying another charger.
The charger does not recognize the pack
- Confirm that the charger model explicitly supports the battery platform.
- Check whether the charger is intended for sequential operation and whether another pack is already being charged.
- Review the manual’s instructions for the charger and battery.
- Consider battery condition, damage and environmental temperature; compatibility information alone cannot diagnose a defective pack.
Charging takes longer than the published figure
- Make sure you are comparing the same battery and charger models as the published result.
- Remember that Super Charger results were measured at room temperature.
- For the dual-system charger, account for sequential charging when more than one pack is installed.
- If the difference persists, follow Milwaukee’s support or service instructions rather than repeatedly cycling a questionable battery.
The pack appears genuine but the label is inconsistent
Do not rely on appearance alone. The cited compatibility FAQs establish platform rules, not authenticity. Use the exact model documentation and Milwaukee support channels to resolve an uncertain or damaged identification label.
What the platform rule does not tell you
A platform match cannot answer every question about a battery. It does not confirm that a used pack still holds its rated charge, that a damaged housing is safe, or that a seller’s product is authentic. It also does not provide a universal model-by-model table for every specialized tool.
