You usually cannot prove who—or what—is running a job interview from conversational style alone. The strongest clues are a one-way recorded format, preset questions, chatbot language, consent screens, and notices saying that answers will be transcribed, scored, ranked, or analyzed. The dependable way to find out is to ask whether the process is human-led, AI-led, or a combination; what data are examined; who reviews the result; how long recordings are kept; and whether a human alternative or accommodation is available.
Start with the format, not the interviewer’s personality
A polished voice, quick response, awkward pause, or repetitive prompt does not establish that an interview is automated. A human recruiter may be reading a script, using a delay-prone video platform, or relying on software that transcribes the conversation. Conversely, an AI system can be designed to sound warm and conversational.
Look first at the mechanics of the process:
- Live conversation: You speak with a named recruiter or hiring manager at a scheduled time. This is evidence of human participation, but software may still record, transcribe, score, or summarize the call.
- One-way or asynchronous video: You receive preset questions, record answers on your own, and submit them for later review. The recordings may be assessed by automated technology, a human, or both.
- Chat interview: A text window asks questions and collects answers. It may be a chatbot, a scripted form, or a human recruiter using a shared interface.
- Hybrid process: An automated system asks questions or generates a score, while recruiters interpret the output and make the hiring decision.
A one-way recording is therefore a strong clue that software may be involved, but it does not prove that no person will see your answers. “AI-assisted” can cover transcription, feature extraction, scoring, ranking, or a recommendation even when a human makes the final decision.

Signs that AI may be involved
Language in the invitation or job posting
Read the invitation, application portal, job posting, consent screen, and privacy notice before you start. Watch for terms such as chatbot, virtual assistant, automated decision system, AI screening, asynchronous video interview, automated scoring, or algorithmic assessment. A notice may also say that the system analyzes your voice, facial expression, eye contact, tone, wording, or other communication features.

Some notices describe the technology without using the word “AI.” Phrases such as “natural-language processing,” “machine-learning assessment,” “automated ranking,” “behavioral signal analysis,” or “responses will be evaluated by a technology-assisted system” still indicate that software is doing more than simply storing your application.
Preset questions and strict recording rules
If every candidate receives the same questions, has a fixed preparation timer, and must record answers without a live interviewer, you are in an asynchronous video interview. The UK Department for Science, Innovation and Technology defines this format as an interview in which applicants submit a video answering predetermined questions and the answers are subsequently analyzed using automated technology, human oversight, or both.
Other clues include a countdown clock, a limited number of retakes, automatic reminders, a practice question that is not reviewed by a person, or an instruction to look at a particular point on the screen. These features can be ordinary platform controls, so treat them as indicators to verify rather than proof of a scoring model.

Before recording, a platform may request permission to access your camera, microphone, or screen. The important question is what happens after capture. Look for statements about transcription, voiceprints, facial landmarks, gaze or eye movement, sentiment, tone, retention, sharing with vendors, or transfer to an employer’s recruiting system.
A camera permission request alone does not show that your face is being scored. It only shows that the platform needs video access. A statement that facial expression, eye contact, or vocal characteristics will be analyzed is materially different and should prompt specific questions.
Chatbot behavior
A text interface that identifies itself as a bot, answers instantly at all hours, or follows a rigid menu is likely automated. It may still hand your application to a human later. Canadian Public Service Commission guidance states: “You must tell candidates when they are interacting with a chatbot or a virtual assistant.” If the interface never identifies itself, ask before providing information beyond what is necessary to schedule or understand the interview.

Three common interview workflows
The table below separates who interacts with you from what software may do in the background. These categories can overlap.
| Workflow | Who asks the questions | Live or recorded | Possible analysis | Human review | Questions to verify |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Human-led | A recruiter, hiring manager, or panel | Usually live; the call may also be recorded | Transcription, notes, search, or other platform functions may be enabled | Usually the interviewer, but confirm whether software produces scores or recommendations | Is the call recorded? Are transcripts or scores generated? Who can access them? |
| AI-led | A chatbot, virtual assistant, or automated interview agent | Usually chat or recorded responses | Potentially wording, voice, facial expression, eye movement, tone, timing, or other extracted features | A person may review the output later, or the system may filter candidates before review | What does the system evaluate? Does a person review raw answers? Can a person reconsider a result? |
| AI-assisted | A human, software agent, or both | Live or recorded | Transcription, summaries, feature extraction, scoring, ranking, or recommendations | Recruiters interpret the output; the division of responsibility varies | Which parts are automated? Is the raw answer available to the reviewer? What weight does the score carry? |
Do not infer the workflow from a single cue. A live interview can still be AI-assisted, and a recorded interview can still receive careful human review.
How to verify the process before you consent
- Save the original materials. Keep the invitation email, job posting, consent language, privacy notice, and the URL or name of the interview platform. Screenshots or downloaded copies preserve wording that may later change.
- Read every disclosure. Search for the terms listed above and note whether the notice identifies the data collected, purpose, recipients, retention period, and any opt-out or alternative process.
- Identify the interview format. Determine whether you will talk to a person in real time, submit a recording, answer in a chat window, or complete several stages with different tools.
- Ask four direct questions in writing. Use the wording in the next section, then save the response. Written confirmation is more useful than an informal assurance on a call.
- Check the answer against the consent screen. If a recruiter says “no AI” but the platform says answers are automatically scored or analyzed, ask which statement controls and request clarification before recording.
- Decide what to do with an incomplete answer. You can ask for a human alternative, an accommodation, more information about retention and sharing, or time to consider whether to proceed.
Questions that reveal who—or what—is evaluating you
Ask precise, neutral questions rather than “Is this a robot interview?” That phrasing can produce a narrow answer about who is speaking while leaving scoring or transcription unexplained.
- “Is this interview conducted by a person, an AI agent, or a combination of the two?”
- “Are my words, voice, face, facial expressions, eye movements, or other video signals scored or analyzed?”
- “Is the system transcribing or summarizing my answers, and does it generate a score, ranking, recommendation, or pass/fail result?”
- “Who reviews the result, and can a human review my raw answers and reconsider an automated outcome?”
- “How long are the recording and transcript retained, who receives them, and are they shared with a technology provider?”
- “What accommodation or human interview option is available if this format creates a disability-related barrier?”
Ask for the name of the technology only if it helps you understand the process; the key facts are the data used, the decision made, and the human oversight. If the employer cannot answer immediately, ask for a written explanation before you submit a recording.
What the major guidance says about disclosure
Canada
The Canadian Public Service Commission says: “You must tell candidates when they are interacting with a chatbot or a virtual assistant.” That statement concerns disclosure of the interaction itself; it does not mean every use of recruiting software is forbidden or that disclosure rules are identical for every Canadian employer.

Ontario guidance says covered publicly advertised job postings must disclose whether artificial intelligence is used to screen, assess, or select applicants beginning 1 January 2026. The rule is jurisdiction- and employer-specific, so check whether the posting and organization fall within its scope. A disclosure about AI use should still be read alongside the privacy notice to learn what the system actually analyzes.

United Kingdom
UK guidance treats an asynchronous video interview as a recording of answers to predetermined questions that are later analyzed using automated technology, human oversight, or a combination. That definition is useful because it does not assume that automation replaces people: a recorded answer can pass through both an algorithm and a recruiter.
United States
U.S. Department of Justice guidance explains that artificial intelligence generally means a computer completing a task usually done by a person, giving recognition of facial expressions during a video interview as an example. The example shows why “a human makes the final decision” does not answer whether AI is used earlier in the process.
What an interview system might analyze
Interview technology can operate at several layers. Ask which layer applies rather than accepting a general statement that the employer uses “some automation.”
Content and wording
Speech-to-text software can create a transcript, search for terms, summarize an answer, or compare your wording with a competency framework. This is different from analyzing how your face looks, but it may still influence ranking or recruiter attention.
Voice and delivery
A system may extract acoustic features such as pace, pauses, volume, or tone. Such measurements can be affected by microphones, connection quality, language background, speech differences, or health conditions. Ask whether these signals are scored, merely recorded, or ignored after transcription.
Face, gaze, and movement
Some tools claim to assess facial expression, eye contact, gaze direction, or other visible behavior. These signals are especially important to clarify because camera angle, lighting, cultural communication style, assistive technology, and disability can affect what a system detects.

Timing and interaction patterns
Preparation time, response length, retakes, pauses, and the sequence of clicks may be logged. A timing record is not necessarily a personality judgment, but it can become part of a score or recommendation. Ask what is retained and whether timing affects eligibility.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhy mannerisms are not reliable proof
People often try to diagnose automation from speed, tone, or awkwardness. That approach produces false positives and false negatives.
- A human may use scripted prompts, a teleprompter, translation software, or a call-center workflow.
- A technical delay can make a person pause or repeat a question.
- An AI agent can use natural-sounding speech and adapt its wording.
- A recruiter may appear conversational while an unseen system transcribes and scores the call.
- A one-way platform may use no conversational AI at all but still apply automated ranking to the recording.
Use behavior as a reason to ask questions, not as evidence to cite in a complaint or decision. Written disclosure, the consent language, and a direct answer from the employer are stronger sources of confirmation.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Accommodation and a human alternative
Request an alternative when the format creates a functional barrier. You do not need to diagnose the employer’s model or prove that it is inaccurate before asking for a workable assessment.
For example, explain that camera-based analysis, speech recording, eye-contact requirements, or a timed one-way format interferes with your ability to demonstrate job-related skills. Ask for a live human interview, a text or written response, additional preparation time, permission to use an assistive device, or another equivalent method.
U.S. ADA guidance says employers must examine hiring technologies for disability discrimination. UK guidance warns that facial, voice, and eye-detection systems can be less accurate or inaccessible for some protected or disabled groups. Those statements do not guarantee a particular alternative in every case; they support asking how the employer prevents the tool from excluding qualified candidates.

Keep the request focused on the barrier and the assessment you can complete. You can ask whom to contact, whether the request is confidential, and whether the accommodation changes how your answers are evaluated.
If the employer will not explain the system
An evasive or incomplete response is itself useful information. Do not guess at the technology, but preserve a clear record.
- Save the posting, invitation, consent screen, privacy notice, and all correspondence.
- Write down the date, person, and exact wording of any answer you received.
- Ask one concise follow-up that lists the unresolved points: automation, data analyzed, human review, retention, and alternative assessment.
- Decide whether to continue based on the role, the information available, and any barrier the process creates. If you continue, avoid assuming that a human will see every answer unless that has been confirmed.
- If the issue may involve privacy, labor, disability, or discrimination law, seek advice from the relevant authority in the jurisdiction governing the employer. Rules differ by country and by employer type.
Do not secretly record a conversation or disclose another person’s personal information without checking the law where you are. Your strongest evidence is usually the employer’s own written notice and your saved correspondence.
A practical decision checklist
| What you know | What it establishes | What remains to ask |
|---|---|---|
| A named recruiter schedules a live call | A person is participating in at least one stage | Whether the call is recorded, transcribed, scored, or summarized automatically |
| You receive preset questions and record answers alone | The process is asynchronous; later human or automated analysis is possible | Who reviews the recording, what signals are analyzed, and whether a human alternative exists |
| The notice says answers are transcribed | Speech-to-text processing is used | Whether the transcript feeds a score, ranking, recommendation, or eligibility decision |
| The notice mentions facial, voice, tone, or eye analysis | More than simple recording may occur | Which features are measured, how accuracy and accessibility are addressed, and who can challenge the result |
| The employer says “AI-assisted” | Some automated function is present | Whether it is transcription, feature extraction, scoring, ranking, or recommendation, and the role of human review |
| No disclosure is provided | Nothing reliable about the workflow | Ask for a written explanation before consenting and preserve the request |
What a trustworthy answer should contain
A useful employer response does more than say “a human is involved.” It identifies the stages in which automation appears, the categories of data collected, the people or vendors who receive them, the retention period, and the way a recruiter can review or overturn an automated result. It also explains how to request an accommodation or equivalent human assessment.
If you receive that level of detail, you can make an informed choice about participating. If you receive only a reassuring label—such as “AI-assisted” or “human-reviewed”—treat it as a starting point and ask what the label means in this particular interview.
The reliable way to tell
You cannot identify an automated interview with confidence from its voice, pauses, or friendliness. Confirm it through the format, the written notices, and direct questions about automation, analyzed signals, human review, retention, sharing, and alternatives. A recorded one-way interview is a practical warning to investigate, not proof that an algorithm alone decides your fate. The answer that matters is the employer’s documented process and whether you have a meaningful way to obtain human review or an accommodation.
